Although not a member of Opus Dei, I have the utmost regard for Bl
Josemaria who has helped me to find a new dimension to my faith and
the grace to pursue it. I have now adopted him as one of my patrons
as my soul has been set on fire with his vision, and fortified with
his help.
Have recently commissioned an icon of the father and await the
results. Will scan it and make it available in JPEG format if
anyone's interested.

Hi all
In three days, we celebrate the birth centennial of Bl. Escriva.
I think today the congress in Rome on the legacy of Bl. Escriva
starts. Anyone on this list who's participating there. Let's all pray
for the fruits of that congress.
Also, fresh news and articles, especially about the miracle, are
available at the site www.opusdei.org
Joma
Yes, with the approval of the miracle, the hope is
that the canonization would most likely happen June 26
or Otober 2 next year. Let's pray that this would
indeed happen, and between now and then let's increase
our efforts to spread the devotion to Blessed Escriva.

Salve,
Happy to hear from the Forum again. Too bad I cannot
go to the Congress, but I shall appreciate if someone
going can echo to us what has transpired.
Thanks.

Dear all,
Thanks to Joma for the exciting news. I have asked
my spiritual director and some friends of the Work in
different countries about the possible canonoization
of the Father. They say that since there is no
official notice, the only thing we can do is to pray,
pray and pray. Let's really pray hard that it will
come true.
By the way, how are you going to celebrate the
Centenary of the Father in your countries?

Vatican Sources: Founder of Opus Dei to be Canonized June 26, 2002
reported by David Murgia
The date for the canonization of Opus Dei's founder, Blessed
Josemaria
Escriva de Balaguer (1902-1975), has already been chosen: June 26,
2002
(feast of Blessed Josemaria Escriva), Vatican sources have
told "Inside the
Vatican."
Barring any last-minute change of plans, then, Pope John Paul II is
now
expected to canonize Escriva in June, 10 years after John Paul
beatified
Escriva (May 17, 1992).
Escriva, of Spain, was set for canonization during 2000, but the
celebration
was postponed (one reason given was to avoid further crowds in Rome
during
an already crowded Jubilee Year).
The canonization decision also must pass a final hurdle -- one our
sources
suggests is now a mere formality -- which is the formal approval of
the
validity of a miracle of healing of a Spanish doctor, Manuel Nevado
Rey (who
is still alive today), attributed to the intercession of Blessed
Escriva.
After the evidence for Nevado Rey's miracle has been formally
validated, the
decree making the canonization official will be promulgated, probably
sometime during November.
If all goes as planned, then, the canonization will come during the
100th
anniversary year of Escriva's birth, for which a conference in Rome
and a
series of celebrations are scheduled beginning in January.
***
The Miracle
November1992, Badajoz, Spain. Manuel Nevado Rey, was 60 years old and
without hope. He had been a noted doctor, serving at the Health
Services
Residence of Badajoz, but had been forced to leave the medical
profession.
A skin cancer, type III, had invaded his hands and he could no longer
operate. The cause of the cancer was more than 20 years of exposure
to X-ray
light without proper protective covering.
The first signs of damage came, according to Nevado Rey's testimony,
was
"the loss of hair of the skin of the hands, with subsequent redness
and
irritation, atrophy of the skin, and the appearance of ulcers on the
hands."
The condition worsened over several years until Nevado Rey lost
sensation in his fingers and was forced, in 1992, to abandon the
operating
table.
But worse than giving up medical practice, the condition was without
cure
and doctors said it would require the amputation of the hands.
Nevado Rey "used no specific curative therapy except for hydrating
the
skin."
At this point, his friend Luis Eugenio Bernardo Carrascal, an
official at
the Ministry of Agriculture and devotee of Blessed Escriva, gave
Nevado Rey
an image of the founder of Opus Dei and told him to pray.
"I prayed immediately," said Doctor Nevado, "and some days later went
to
Vienna for a medical conference. I was very struck by the fact that
in all
the churches that I visited, I found the image of the Founder of Opus
Dei.
It encouraged me to pray even more for his intercession. I prayed
informally," Nevado continued, "without following the written prayer
on the
back of the image."
"From the day when the image was given to me," continued Doctor
Nevado, "and
on which I entrusted myself to the Blessed Escriva, my hands began to
get
better. In 15 days, the lesions disappeared and my hands returned to
their
normal, perfectly healed appearance." He added, "Quite simply, the
cancer
healed and I can only attribute it to the intercession of the Blessed
Josemaria Escriva de Balaguer."
Testimony of the miracle was gathered during the canonical process in
Badajoz from May 12 to July 4, 1994, just two years after the
beatification.
Nine witnesses were examined: The healed man, his wife who was also
his nurse,
three doctors (one of whom is his son), two priests called "ex-
officio," who
testify for the honesty of the witnesses and the proceedings, a nun,
and
Nevado Rey's friend, Mr. Carrascal, at whose suggestion he prayed to
Blessed
Escriva.
The documents involved in the process are five non-technical
testimonies, a
clinical history written by Dr. Adolfo Llorente, two medical reports
and an
analysis by Dr. Llorente with photographs.
During the study phase of the process by "ex-officio" experts,
supplementary
exams and a second medical opinion were requested. The positive
testimony of
Professor A. Garcovich laid to rest any remaining doubts.
All seven theologians involved in the process are in agreement that
there
"exists a causal relationship" between Nevado Rey's invocation of
Blessed
Escriva and his subsequent healing. "Therefore," the documents
state, "the
healing of Dr. Nevado, verified as described, has the character of a
supernatural event quoad modum, that is, of a miracle, and as such
must be
attributed to the intercession of the Blessed Escriva de Balaguer."
"Scientifically inexplicable," is the phrase used by the medical
consultant
to define the miracle of Manuel Nevado Rey. The healing was described
as "very quick, complete and lasting; scientifically inexplicable."
All five
consultants were in agreement on the affirmative judgement. No
consultant
is, or was ever, a member of Opus Dei.
At the time, neither Dr. Nevado nor his wife were members of Opus
Dei. His
wife admits, "I asked my husband if he had prayed to the Blessed
Escriva and
he said 'Yes, I prayed.' I, on the other hand, never did."

Vatican for

on the
expected canonization of Blessed Escriva in its November issue.)

Favours Received from the Father
A Real Father
I am a religious and so strictly speaking I cannot become
even a corporator. However, I do not hesitate to acknowledge him as
my spiritual father for I have tangibly experienced his paternal care
since he came into my life about 5 years ago. His favours to me are
not something very spectacular in nature, but they responds to the
needs in the important moments of my life and they even answer my
intimate child-like whims. In short, Blessed Josemaria is a "real"
father to me.
I first came to know the Father through a book that attacks
him and the Work. It was obvious to me the criticisms were made
either out of malice or ignorance. This happened also during the time
when I was seeking ways to live a more intense spiritual life. The
few objective facts portrayed by this book evoke in me an affinity
with the Father, in whom I recognized a person of great sanctity. On
the evening of 26 June1997, while I was praying after having attended
the celebration of his feast day, I had a strong experience of his
paternal presence which gave me the conviction that he would be the
good angel that the Lord gave me in my struggle for Christian
perfection. Since then He has really "transformed" my life with his
edifying love of God and neighbours. From him I learn what it means
to be a consecrated person.
Father, if you really love me...
Sometimes, I wondered if the Father would really take me as his
spiritual daughter since Opus Dei is for lay people. So I did ask for
signs from him as confirmation and he would never spurn my request.
In 1999, I happened to go to Rome to prepare a video in preparation
for the Holy Year. It had been my great desire to go to visit him at
the Prelatic Church. Yet, as the schedule was tight, the director of
the video had given an order that no one could leave the group.
During the last few days of our stay in Rome, I began to be
frustrated for it was quite impossible for me to realize my
aspiration. In my great agitation, I prayed, "Father, if you really
love me, please give me the chance to visit you, as a son or daughter
of yours will do." However, I regretted a bit for making such a
challenge, so I added, "but even if you do not help me this time, I
know that you still love me". Then one afternoon, the shooting was
really good to the great satisfaction of the director, so he suddenly
let us free for the afternoon. Immediately, I got two of my friends
to bring me to the Prelatic Church. There, I thanked the Father for
having listened to my childish plea.
A Roman Soul
After finishing my first cycle in theology studies, I was
given the permission to continue with my licentiate in another
country. I myself would like to go to Rome, the heart of the Church.
After all, I was going to specialize in dogmatic theology and what
better place for that if not Rome? However, my superiors had some
misgivings since we had no religious houses in Italy. They preferred
that I study in Canada. So I prayed the Father to intercede for me,
knowing that He is a great Roman Soul. One day, to my great surprise,
I received the "go" signal to Rome from my General Superior. I am
sure it was a favour from the Father.
During my stay in Rome I had great difficulties in mastering
the Italian. But with the help of the Father and the encouragement of
my spiritual director who is the priest of the Prelature, I have
managed to pass my examinations with flying colours. Of course, the
Father has interceded for me, but it is really his edifying examples
of perseverance and his teachings of sanctifying our daily works that
gave me the motivation to dream the impossible dreams.
May God be praised and thanked for the gift of Blessed
Josemaria to the Church and to the world!!

Dear all,
One project we can start as part of the centenary of Blessed Escriva
is perhaps to share or relate favors received from him.
This can be first-hand or something we have heard from a friend.
This is a good way to spread devotion to Blessed Escriva. Anyone care
to start?

PS Let's continue to recruit members to this list.
Hello everyone,
There's a new biography of Blessed Escriva by Andres Vazquez de
Prada, entitled "The Founder of Opus Dei:The Life of Josemaria
Escriva, Volume 1: The Early Years".
It's the best biography written, full of details (especially since it
bases itself on the personal notes of the Father himself) and very
historical as well. Recommended reading for everyone.
Joma
Dear Friends,
I am happy to discover that the well-known
Archbishop Oscar Romero loved the Father and had
received spiritual direction from Opus Dei priest. The
following is an excerpt of an article about the
Spiritual Journey of the late Archbishop
(www.spiritualitytoday.org/spir2day/904242/brock.html)
One can see how much he has assimilated the teachings
of the Father.
**********************
"Romero remained an auxiliary bishop of San Salvador
until October of 1974, when he was named bishop of
Santiago de Maria, a rural diocese. He remained in
Santiago until named archbishop of San Salvador in
February of 1977, at the age of fifty-nine. During
these five years, his retreat notes show him
continuing to work on the problems of getting along
with others and trying to organize his life better, as
he had in earlier retreats. At least two of the
retreats he made were preached by priests of the
secular institute Opus Dei, and during these years and
perhaps earlier his ordinary confessor and spiritual
director was one or another priest of Opus Dei. While
he was bishop of r Santiago de Maria, he wrote to Pope
Paul VI to appeal for the beatification of the founder
of Opus Dei, who had recently died, saying:
"Personally, I owe deep gratitude to the priests of
[Opus Dei], to whom I have entrusted with great
satisfaction the spiritual direction of my life and
that of other priests."

Hi folks,
Here's a news article from Zenit.org, basically saying

will sign the decree of the miracle this December,
with the canonization happening 2002.
Hmmm, interesting...

====================
Canonization in Sight for Opus Dei Founder?
VATICAN CITY, SEPT. 30, 2001 (Zenit.org).- Blessed
Josemaría Escrivá de Balaguer, founder of Opus Dei,
might be canonized next year, according to unofficial
Vatican sources.
According to the sources, the Congregation for the
Causes of Saints acknowledged the miraculous healing
of a Spanish doctor, 69, who was suffering from an
acute case of dermatological decomposition.
The cure was declared scientifically inexplicable on
May 17, 1992, a few years after the beatification of
Monsignor Escrivá. The examination of the theological
commission appointed by the Vatican congregation
concluded with an approval in 1998, the Roman daily Il
Messagero reported today.
The newspaper also reported that the miracle was
approved Sept. 21 by the commission of cardinals and
bishops entrusted with examining the case.
Should the above information be confirmed, John Paul
II might sign the decree recognizing the miracle this
December. Thus the canonization could take place in
2002, the centenary of Escrivá's birth.
Neither official Vatican sources nor anyone of the
Opus Dei Prelature in Rome confirmed the possibility
that Escrivá's process of canonization was nearing its
end.

Hi yuen pauline,
Unfortunately, it's true that there are a lot of web
sites saying negative things about the Father and Opus
Dei.
But then the Father has taught us to "drown evil with
an abundance of good". That's exactly my idea for
coming up with this yahoogroup: to show that there are
a lot of us people who are grateful to the Father,
for the great good that he has done to our lives, and
continues to do from heaven.
So, sign up people for this yahoogroup! And write
testimonials about Blessed Escriva in this list. This
is something very concrete that we can do to defend
the Father, as you were asking.
By the way, thanks for the email. At least, there's
some action in this list. And thanks to everyone who
have signed up.
Right now there are 11 of us in the list. If each of
us invites 10 people, there'll be 100 of us in no
time. Then, if we repeat that process, we can be
1,000! I'm hoping we reach this number by January 9,
2002, the birth centenary of Blessed Escriva. This
will be our gift to him, right?

There are many people who do not understand Opus Dei (what it is
and sometimes more importantly, what it is not). Unfortunately there are
some people that spread, well, lies about the Work. All we can do, as far
as I can see, is to tell the truth, to combat lies with truth.

things about him and Opus Dei? Is there anything we

Do You Yahoo!?
Make international calls for as low as $.04/minute with Yahoo! Messenger

Hello folks,
Here is a picture of a Polish stamp featuring Blessed
Escriva with a worker at the background. I think there
are other countries as well which have issued Blessed
Escriva stamps. Do you know which?
Several other countries will be issuing similar stamps
as well for the centennial celebration.
I'll be uploading the photo at the Files section of
this yahoogroup.

Hi all
A good project that we can start is to collect accounts of favors
received from Blessed Escriva. I've managed to find two such stories
on the Internet, which I have placed in the Bookmarks section of this
yahoogroup. Perhaps you could share experiences of someone you know
or heard about.
Regards
Joma
Hi folks
Welcome to the list. This is a list I started with the desire of
spreading devotion to Blessed Escriva. Be sure to check the the
egroups site at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/escrivanet. There are
lots of links there to various resources. You can send me your links
as well.
Please help me spread the word about this site. Ask your friends to
join this egroup by sending mail to:
escrivanet-subscribe@yahoogroups.com
I hope to reach 1,000 list members by the end of the year.
Regards,
Joma
