This is the discussion and announcement list for the public meeting on 22nd November 2007, in Oxford Town Hall, to promote public debate of the effects of human inequality a.) on human health and b.) on the environment.
For example, it is now clear that people who live in less-equal societies have shorter and lower-quality lives than people in more-equal societies.
Also, in less-equal societies consumption tends to be driven more by social pressures than by actual needs or wants. This is a major (probably the main) cause of the overconsumption that is now causing climate change.
So the question is no longer "is equality a realistic goal?" but "when must be achieve it by?"
The meeting is addressed by two of Britain's foremost experts on the effects of inequality - Richard Wilkinson (Professor of Social Epidemiology, Nottingham University, UK) and Danny Dorling (Professor of Social Geography at Sheffield University).
