** JUDGE STOPS ACCESS LAWSUITS (UPDATE)
In early November, we took a look at the dilemma faced by
those of us who seek access, and who must file lawsuits to
gain entry. Our story focused on the outrage directed
against one man, Jarek Molski, a wheelchair user who has
sued, according to news accounts, nearly 400 businesses
along California's central coast. Although the businesses
are clearly violating both federal and state access laws --
which is why Molski wins his suits -- a federal judge last
week ruled that Molski would not be allowed to file any
further suits, without prior permission by a judge. Read our
update, with links to news coverage, at

There is a new email list group for anyone who has any kind of
illness where they have pain just about everyday.

The email list group is for support. Deaf people who live in daily
pain often suffer in silence because others do not understand. It's
not that people do not understand, its simply because they are not
educated about your daily struggle with pain.
With this list, you will meet others who have FMS, CFIDS, and an
array of other illness, dis-eases.
Also on this list, you will learn from one another what they do to
overcome their pain.
Some people do reiki, full body massages, go away to to a retreat
with others who also have pain. It's a lot of fun.

If you are interested in this list, you can subscribe by clicking:

Don't worry, I will go try out for modeling for Men's

Our SHHH Atlanta Hears Vice President, Jeff Bonnell, just sent me
this important announcement about an upcoming TV show featuring a
family home makeover for 2 deaf parents and a blind & autistic
child. I understand many of you are not interested in reality TV
shows and certainly not home remodeling TV shows, but I think you
should make an effort to watch this one Why? The article below
specifically states that in the show, they're building "a dream home
outfitted with the latest communications and safety
devices for people with hearing loss." To me, this sounds like a
MARVELOUS way to learn about what products are available to help us
hard of hearing & deaf people in our home environments. We'll get to
see firsthand how these home products are installed and work for the
family home environment. The show will be aired on ABC on Sunday,
January 2, 2005 from 7:00-9:00pm
Eastern Standard Time. Enjoy watching the show!

ABC re-airing William Austin on
Extreme Makeover: Home Edition
In November, ABC aired a story about making an Oak Park, Michigan
home safe and communication-friendly for the deaf parents of a blind
and autistic son on back-to-back episodes of Extreme Makeover: Home
Edition.

If you missed that show, ABC plans to re-air it on January 2, 2005
at 6 p.m.
(CST). The episode features Starkey Hearing Foundation founder
William F. Austin and Academy Award-winning actress Marlee Matlin
welcoming the Vardon family home and presenting a scholarship check.

Here is a recap of the story:

When Stefan Vardon, 14, wrote a heartwarming school essay about his
deaf parents and his blind and autistic 12-year-old brother, he had
no idea that it would lead to the team from Extreme Makeover: Home
Edition showing up at his family's home. The design team transformed
the Vardons' ordinary, 980-square-foot house into a dream home
outfitted with the latest communications and safety devices for
people with hearing loss.

In the second hour, the family returns from a week-long vacation to a
completely remodeled home equipped with the latest in assisted-living
technology. During this segment, Austin and Matlin present Stefan
with a $50,000 college scholarship check from the Starkey Hearing
Foundation.

Matlin also sat with Stefan's mother, Judy, while she had her
hearing tested for the first time in 20 years. Amazingly, Judy
discovered she has residual hearing and is a candidate for hearing
instruments. Austin and his Foundation team will fit Judy and
Stefan's father, Larry on January 4, 2005.
ABC plans on airing a follow-up episode in February, 2005.

Remember, the re-airing of these back-to-back episodes takes place
on Sunday January 2, 2005 from 6:00-7:00 and 7:00-8:00 p.m. (CST)
on ABC. To learn more about the Starkey Hearing Foundation, visit
