I am including here my column for this week as its very exciting in
many areas.
FOLLOW THROUGH TO THE ABOVE LINK FOR FULL DETAILS and THE KEYNOTE
ADDRESS.
FAMILY TREE COLUMN 85– JANET REAKES

If you have European ancestors then this may interest you. The Church
of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has released yet another great
CD-ROM in a series of `Vital Record Indexes’ as per it’s announcement
this week:
”Twelve and a half million vital records from Western Europe are now
available on CD-ROM from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day
Saints.
The Vital Records Index for Western Europe includes information
extracted
from birth, christening and marriage records from the Alpine, Benelux,
French, German, Italian, and Spanish regions.”
You will need to wait about a month until it’s available through their
Carlingford Office (PO Box 2723, Carlingford, NSW 2118).. The cost
will be $48 inc post.

Speaking to the annual conference of the Federation of Genealogical
Societies in Salt Lake City, Elder Richard E. Turley Jr., managing
director of the Family and Church History Department, announced a
number of innovations in the tools and services offered by the Church:
Vital Records Indexes as mentioned above for Western Europe, as well
as Mexico and Scandinavia, the 1880 United States Census, Personal
Ancestral File in additional languages, and
a face lift for the FamilySearch Internet web site.
I loved his comment as quoted here: In looking forward to the future
of genealogical research and new technology, Turley said, "Buckle your
seatbelts, and hang on tight."
Other important things he announced include:
The Vital Records Indexes for Western Europe, Mexico and Scandinavia
include birth, christening and marriage records. The index for Western
Europe is being released today and includes 12.5 million records.
• The 1880 United States Census is a complete extraction and digital
publication of the census. It has been in production for many years
and represents the work of thousands of volunteers.
• Personal Ancestral File (PAF) 4.0 is currently available on disk in
English, Spanish, French, German and Portuguese or as a free download
from The new 5.0 version of PAF will be available in Japanese,
Chinese, Korean, and Swedish. PAF 5 also allows users to type
information from essentially any language including Russian, Arabic,
Hebrew and Korean.
• FamilySearch Internet Genealogy Service 2.0 represents a new look
and new capabilities for the website. The interface has been updated
to allow for future growth to better accommodate translation into
other languages, and to make features more visible to users.
That’s so exciting. Genealogy is just getting stronger and
stronger!!!!!!

JANET REAKES GENEALOGY CONSULTANT, AUTHOR & ADOPTION SPECIALIST

Would like to ask you a question re adoption in the UK 1880's
please...

Are there or would there be any records of the adopted child anywhere?
And where would you go to find them?

I have 2 adopted children in the family..one we were able to trace
back to his mother and he was a family child. His history we found by
accident and proved out ...the other child I believe was a family
child also but cannot prove...both these children were taken to the US
with their adopted parents ....papers were needed to emigrate so some
sort of birth certificate or adoption papers would be needed wouldn't
they?

I mean people just did not get on a ship bound for a life in another
country without the proper paperwork in the 1890's ..

Wouldn't they have to have gone to court to get the papers to adopt
the child legally ,especially as late as the late 1880's & 1890's...

I just cannot seem to understand how one could adopt a child that late
in the 1800's and not have any papers on the child...

Since its says you are a adoption specialist maby you could tell me
about this...if you would please

Thank you

St Mary de Lode Church is in the city of Gloucester, near the ancient
crossing point (or lode) of the River Severn. It is very close to
Gloucester Cathedral.

Hi Heather
Coton is just a small hamlet , and does not have a church od its own.
I t is in either the parish of Guilsborough or the parish of Ravensthorpe.
Being about midway between the two people from Coton might have gone to
either of those churches for christenings, though marriages had to take
place in the parish of the bride or groom. (Where they were living at the
time, though, not where they were born)
If looking for a birth in the national indexes, then the registration
district is probably Brixworth.
Probably only about 70% of births were registerred in the early days, and
just as today, many people did not go to church or baptise their children.

Hi Anne,

Firstly let me tell you that PITTARD is a Swiss name. The RED CROSS was
started by Jean Pittard, a surgeon in Geneva in the 1600s. I have a print of
him, an etching no doubt, which I can send if you are interested.

Some years ago, I contacted several Swiss Pittards, who sent lots of
information to me. The general history is that in the 1500 and 1600s there
was some kind of religious persecution, and the Pittards/Pitards were mainly
Protestant/Lutheran and a lot had migrated to France. At this period in
time, France was Catholic and to be Protestant was life threatening, so a
lot went to England or back to Switzerland or became Catholic. My lot were
always Swiss, until gr-grandfather went to London and married Mary Ann Lewis
in London in 1852, then brought my grandfather, brothers and sisters to
Australia in 1877.

The Pittards in Somerset and other parts of Britain are all descendd from
the French and originally Swiss Pittards. The name means, "Keepers at the
gates of the Castle" and it was a very "honerable "name in Geneva. We have a
Pittard Street in Geneva, and there have been scientists, lawyers, engineers
within the the Pittard clan, amongst other illustrious professions!

It is most unlikely that you will ever make the connection back to
Switzerland, because the French records may have been lost during the 2
World Wars. I am fortunate that my family stayed in Geneva and the records
have been safe over the centuries. These are just a few facts that were
passed on to me by the various Swiss and French Pittards, I hope that you
find them interesting.

BlankWell, well well, with all the trouble I've been having since May trying to
get Family Tree Maker, I received this information today about Version 8 that
was released this week in the USA and will be available end of Oct in Australia(
So they claim!!) so lets say beginning of Nov.

There are 3 versions but I am only going to deal in the smaller one, ie the one
with 24 CD ROMs and not the 35 pack. I am not sure of the price but would think
it would still be around $120 plus post. (DON'T HOLD ME TO PRICE UNTIL I KNOW
OFFICIALLY AS THE DOLLAR IS BAD) Anyway. I have put in an order for 25 so if you
want to be the first people in Australia to get version 8 then email me directly
and I will compile a list of first comes.

The distributers expect a busy time for Christmas with all their software, so
told me to order now. I am listing below the major upgrades for 8 which also
include the brilliant upgrade in 7.5 of the abilitiy to move boxes in charts.

Now to you people already with Upgrades, I am trying this new firm to see if
they can get me a better deal, otherwise you need to order directly from FAMILY
TREE MAKER through the credit card. Visit their web page and read it all
http://familytreemaker.com/newftw.html#pubcenter

NOW BE CAREFUL! ON TOP OF THAT PRICE COMES POSTAGE. SO AN AMERICAN PRODUCT AT
$50 WOULD COST ABOUT $90 AND THE POSTAGE WOULD BE ANOTHER $50 OR MORE AS THEY
ARE HEAVY BOXES. I GOT CAUGHT LAST TIME. FOUND IT WAS CHEAPER TO BUY IT HERE IN
AUSSIE THAN IN USA.
Anyway, if you have recently got a FAMILY TREE MAKER, Especially those people
who have waited so long just to get the 7 and 7.5 you should be able to get this
for FREE (ie the Upgrade) Phone USA or Fax or email and give your details.
Bye
Janet

Hi Janet,

I am relatively new (green would be the word) to computers and I do not have
a Family Tree program - have been entering my data (10 generations) in
Microsoft Word. Is this Family Tree Maker the best program to get? A friend
of mine has the Golden Genealogy or Genealogy Gold (something like that). As
a qualified historian myself (not genealogy) I would value your expert
opinion as to the best (not necessarily the most expensive) Family Tree
program. More importantly, is it easy to understand? Further, if I order one
through you, would I be able to pay with a money order as I do not have a
credit account?

Hoping this finds you well and thank you for your time.

Kindest regards
Carol Thom
Melbourne, Australia.

ANSWER: CAROL IF IT WASN'T THE BEST I'D HAVE GIVEN UP SELLING IT MONTHS AGO, THE
PRODUCT IS THE BEST BUT THE DISTRIBUTORS AND COURIERS HAVE A LOT TO LEARN. I'VE
BEEN REALLY FRUSTRATED.
YES ITS THE BEST, ITS EASIEST, AND EVERYONE TRIES TO BEAT IT (LIKE IAN THORPE)
YES YOU CAN ORDER BY CHEQUE OR MONEY ORDER IF YOU DONT HAVE A CREDIT CARD
BUT PLEASE REGISTER DIRECTLY WITH ME AND NOT THE PUBLIC LIST.
THANKS MY DIRECT EMAIL IS jreakes@...

Subject: CORNISH 1891 CENSUS
jreakes@...

BlankPOSTING THIS FROM ANOTHER LIST INCASE ANY OF YOU CORNISH FOLK ARE
INTERESTED

Hi All,

Over the past few months I have been in consultation with Michael McCormack
in Cornwall who is planning a project to be called "Cornish 1891 Online
Census Project".

It will involve transcribing the 1891 Census for Cornwall (some 200+
parishes) and having it accessible online. The microfiche have just
arrived in Cornwall from the LDS. Those of you who are subbed to the
Cornish List may have seen the posting from Michael regarding this.

In the meantime I am looking for volunteers here in Oz who may be
interested in transcribing. I am the Australian-Cornish representative so
Michael will send the microfiche to me and I shall distribute within Oz.

Volunteers will need a computer and access to a microfiche reader.

The actual programme to be used will be the one currently being used by the
Devon group who are 9 months into their project.
If you say yes - you can point your browser at
http://www.cs.ncl.ac.uk/genuki/DEV/censusproject.html
to view the programme IN_CENS which will be adapted for Cornwall I believe
by the writer of the programme (John Lerwill).

We therefore invite volunteers to join us in this exciting project. We
will supply the microfiche and the software. There is a web site, an
online tutorial and a mailing list.

If you think you may be interested please email me
<mailto:kayhin@...>

Let me know your choices of parishes so that Michael can send them to me.

For those of you not on the Cornish list, this is the post from Michael:

"Hello List members

I don't know how many of you are also subscribed to our sister list
for Devon. But if you are, you will know that they are transcribing
the 1891 census returns for Devon to create an online,
"free-to-view", database to be hosted by Rootsweb. Details can be
seen on the Devon/Genuki pages.

We have decided we would like to do the same for Cornwall.

We therefore invite volunteers to join us in this exciting project.
Volunteers will need a computer and access to a microfiche reader.
We will supply the microfiche and the software. There is a web site,
an online tutorial and a mailing list.

Why the 1891? The concept should be OK for any census. Well, it is
available on microfiche and NOT available on disc or online. It also
seemed important to stay in step with the Devon Project, who are
going to give us help and guidance. We can learn from their
experiences. They are currently about 9 months into their project.

Who are we? We are Dave Stick & Michael McCormick. We have an
advisory group of Rick Elliot, Paul Brewer and Kay Hinnrichsen to
keep us from feeling lonely.

This project is designed to produce an enduring asset for present and
future Cornish family historians. It will appeal, we hope, to the
people on this list, the members of the World-wide Cornish Online
Community.

There are no deadlines, so you can work at your own pace and
convenience. So, please join us, and transcribe the parish of your

I noticed in the heading the interest in HANCHARD & FREEBODY. I have a

1796 Windsor NSW. Daniel died 14 Janu 1848 in Menangle Ann died 11 Jan 1882

Yes Gunnedah has changed quite a lot even in the time I've been here (since
1987). A very good friend of mine has a list of burials for Gunnedah. Some
time ago we started up a family history group in town however it folded when
I had me first child. Shirley kept going with our main project of the time
and that was transcriging the cemetery records. I'm not sure how current
they are but knowing Shirley they would be fairly up to date. So, who are
you looking for?? In regards to the photos, not a problem I'll get stuck
into that ASAP.

You briefly mentioned Michael Cheeseman, where does he tie in with the
Hanchard and Freebody families? I seem to recall being in contact with a
Michael Cheeseman a very long time ago ( before I had my family some 10
years) and can't remember the connection. I also obtained a great deal of
info however I no longer have an address for him. If you know Michael I'd
appreciate a contact address so that I can thank him properly and perhaps
now I can do a little more in the research dept.... many hands make light
work.

Regards

Alayne

WESTMINSTER [U.K.] pollbook 1818

Don't make the mistake of ignoring electoral records in your research.
Pollbooks record the names and residences of everyone who voted in
Parliamentary elections; if you search them for the occurrence of the
surname you are researching, you may well come across valuable clues
to help you in your quest. This particular volume lists some 11,000
individuals who voted in the Parliamentary election of June/July
1818; it is arranged alphabetically by parish,
giving addresses and occupations, and stating who electors voted for.
This volume is only to be found in a handful libraries, inaccessible
to
many researchers. I have therefore published it in a facsimile
edition, which is available from me, price £23.50 (including
U.K.postage).
Overseas (airmail): £26.00; $A71.50. If interested, please let me
have your postal
address. Payment is due on the invoice, which will be sent with the
book, and
may be paid by your personal cheque in one of these currencies.

G'day Brenda,

I am trying to find out more information about my g-g-g-grandfather James
BALDWIN, who lived in Kent. I don't know if he was born in Kent.

His son, William James BALDWIN, migrated to New Zealand arriving in New
Plymouth in 1851. William James BALDWIN was born in 1818 in Grinnage?
(Greenwich), married Lousia INCH, in New Plymouth, New Zealand, on 14th or
20th July 1853 and died on 11th May 1903.

As you can see I haven't got much on James BALDWIN, not even his wife's
name, or any of his other children's names.

If there is any tie in with your research I would be "over the moon". I
would reciprocate by providing full details of the BALDWIN clan in New
Zealand and Australia.
