How Our Ancestors Lived : a history of life 100 years ago / David Hey
Theoretically, the 1901 census is now publicly available on the internet -
whether you can access it or not seems to be another question! There is,
however, no question about this book, which was published to accomany the census
launch. David Hey was granted special permission to view the 1901 census before
it was released; his book aims to interpret the unique information revealed, and
weaves it into an absorbing exploration of late Victorian and Edwardian social
history. It offers fascnating insight into:

   a.. family life
   b.. housing and health
   c.. education and religion
   d.. work and leisure
   e.. wealth and poverty
and includes case studies of ordinary families. This is essential reading for
everyone interested in this period of history, as well as being a useful
companion to those researching their Victorian and Edwardian ancestors

Published Public Record Office, 2001. Price £22.00 (inc UK p&p). Overseas
(airmail) £27.00; $US43.00; $A72.90. Email orders welcome. Books will be sent
with an invoice for payment on receipt. Payment by personal cheque preferred.

Hi Looking for any Hyders in Victoria and from Chiddingstone in Kent until the
1850's and then Croydon in Surrey.
I have a Thomas Hyder who married an Abigail Hodge in 1811 in Chiddingstone.
They had 10 children all born there.
Second eldest son Thomas migrated to Australia in 1851. I believe the rest
stayed in an around Croydon. There names were James who married Elizabeth
Lancaster, Jesse who married Caroline. John whom married Charlotte Carrett,
George, Emma, Isaac (died young), Mary Ann, Amos, William (died young I think).
Does anyone have any links to these names thanks in advance

My maternal grandfather is Thomas Smith, born 1885, father Charles Smith, coal
miner.

Charles Smith has the following known children:
Harry, Jack, Joseph, Sarah, Susan, Pat, Thomas, Charles - the order is unknown
and Harry could be Henry and Jack could be John.

At the time of my mother's birth all the family(ies) are living in Yorkshire (my
mother and her 8 siblings were all born around Thurnscoe, Stainforth, Doncaster,
Rotherham), it is assumed that they were all born there.

A search of the birth records shows many many Thomas Smith's with father Charles
born in 1885 so without the name of the mother or place of birth it is
impossible to know which is the correct one.

I have received the 1891 census for Yorkshire and have been trawelling through
the discs page by page and have come across the following entry.

Greasbrough - Rotherham - Address - Birmingham Road(?)
Charles Smith, head, 42, coal miner, born Yorkshire Little Hawswood (this is
what the last word looks like)
Susan Smith, wife, 40, born Shropshire
Joseph, son, 19, coal miner, born Staffordshire
Henry, 16, coal miner pony driver, born Yorkshire Denby(?)
Sarah, 13, scholar, born Yorkshire ???gate
Martha, 11, scholar, born Yorkshire Darfield
Thomas, 6, born Yorkshire Darfield
Susannah, 4, born Yorkshire Darfield
Rose, 1, born Yorkshire Darfield

I can't find a little Hawswood in Yorkshire although I have found a Little
Harwood near Blackburn in Lancashire.

All the information about this family leads me to believe that it is my family
but how can I prove this? There are no members of the family alive to give me
further information.

Any and all suggestions no matter how small would be welcome.

Thank you.

June (Queensland Australia)

I am looking for information on my husbands grandparents who
originated in the Congleton area.

Grandfather was William Cooper, born 01 June 1868, in the above area
we believe. According to what we've been told his father was a
Wheelwright. William was a carpenter and possibly a wheelwright as
well. He and 3 brothers emmigrated to Canada in about 1911. He was
married twice, 2 daughters from first marriage - Gwen and Alice.
Gwen came to canada with William to keep house. Alice stayed in the
Congleton area.

Grandmother Florence Hannah Baker was William's second wife. We have
little to no information on her. Their children born in England
include Elsie, Albert, Herbert and Florrie.

Any information on the above couple would be very much appreciated.

DR. MRS MARIAM ABACHA FSP MON.
NASSARAWA G. R. A. ANNEX, HOUSE 15,
VICTORIA ISLAND LAGOS

DEAR SIR
I AM DR (MRS) MARIAM ABACHA, WIDOW OF LATE GEN.SANNI
ABACHA , THE HEAD-OF-STATE AND PRESIDENT OF THE
FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA WHO DIED ON JUNE 8TH 1998
IN ABUJA. MY LATE HUSBAND OPERATED SECRET ACCOUNTS
WITH NUMEROUS BANKS IN MANY COUNTRIES ARROUND THE
WHOLE WORLD, INTO WHICH VAST SUMS OF MONEYS WERE
DEPOSITED AND CREDITED IN HIS FAVOUR. DURING HIS
TENURE AND LIFE TIME.

THE NEW GOVERNMENT, WHICH IS A DEMOCRACY,SINCE THEIR
COMING INTO POWER, HAVE WAGED A CONTINUING WAR AGAINST
MY FAMILY IN A BID TO LOCATE AND CONSEQUENTLY SIEZE
THESE FUNDS.

SO FAR, THEY HAVE BEEN SUCCESSFUL TO AN ALARMING
EXTENT DUE TO THE CO-OPERATION OF SOME FOREIGN
GOVERNMENTS LIKE USA, ENGLAND AND MORE RECENTLY
SWITZERLAND. HOWEVER, IN ANTICIPATION OF THIS ACTIONS
AGAINST MY FAMILY, THE FAMILY ATTORNEY: DR. JOHN TAFFIDA

AND MY SELF WITH THE HELP OF SOME
SYMPATHETIC PEOPLE, HAVE SUCCEEDED IN FURTHER
TRANSFERRING SOME OF THIS FUNDS TO MORE FAVOURABLE
COUNTRIES, ALSO WE HAVE BEEN ABLE TO SUCCESSFULLY
WITHDRAW A CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT FROM SOME OF THE
ACCOUNTS IN AFRICA,EUROPE, AMERICA AND ASIA.

IT IS FOR THIS MONEY WHICH WE HAVE BEEN ABLE TO
WITHDRAW THAT I AM WRITING YOU TO SOLICIT YOUR
ASSISTANCE.

MY ATTORNEY ADVISED ME TO SEEK IN CONFIDENCE, A
FOREIGN INDIVIDUAL WHO WILL TAKE POSSESSION OF THIS
FUNDS FROM THIS LOCATIONS AND DEPOSIT THE FUNDS
SECRETELY INTO THEIR ACCOUNTS, ANYWHERE.

ON THE CONCLUSION OF THIS FIRST STAGE, YOU WILL BE
REQUIRED TO ADMINISTER THIS FUNDS IN PROFITABLE
INVESTMENTS FOR AN AGREED PERIOD, SUCH THAT IT WILL
BE SAFE FOR ME TO REPOSSESS THE FUNDS IN MY NAME.

ON THE ACCEPTANCE TO ASSIST MY FAMILY, I WILL THEN
GIVE YOU SPECIFIC DETAILS ABOUT THE TRANSACTION.
BUT,KNOW AT THIS POINT THAT I HAVE RESOLVED TO CONCEED
TO YOU, A PERCENTAGE OF THE TOTAL AMOUNT (WHICH SHALL
NEGOTIATE AND AGREE UPON) WHICH YOU SHALL BE REQUIRED
TO MOVE ON THE FIRST HAND, AND A SUBSEQUENT NEGOTIATED
PERCENTAGE OF THE PROFITS THAT WILL ACCRUE TO ME FROM
THE INVESTMENTS MADE BY YOU ON MY BEHALF. I HAVE ALSO
RESOLVED THAT 5% OF THE FIRST FUNDS WILL BE USED TO
OFFSET THE EXPENSES YOU WILL INCURE IN THE PROCESS OF
TAKING POSSESSION OF THE FUNDS AND ALSO ANY LOCAL OR
INTERNATIONAL TAXES THAT MAY BE REQUIRED.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THESE FUNDS ARE ALL READY FOR
COLLECTION AS THEY HAVE ALL BEEN SUCCESSFULLY
WITHDRAWN FROM THE RESPECTIVE ACCOUNTS IN WHICH
THEY WERE INITIALLY LODGED.

HOWEVER, MY ATTORNEY WILL ALWAYS BE ON HAND TO
GIVE YOU THE NECESSARY GUIDANCE AT EACH LOCATION.

MAY I, AT THIS POINT, EMPHASISE THE HIGH LEVEL OF
CONFIDENTIALITY WHICH IS REQUIRED FROM YOU, I HOPE
THAT YOU WILL NOT BETRAY THE TRUST AND CONFIDENCE
WHICH I, ON BEHALF OF>MY FAMILY, HAVE ,DUE TO THE
CIRCUMSTANCES IN WHICH WE FIND OURSELVES, NEED TO
REPOSE IN YOU. YOU WILL, HOWEVER, BE REQUIRED TO
ASSURE ME LEGALLY THAT OUR FUNDS, AFTER COLLECTION,
WILL BE SAFE IN YOUR CARE.

PLEASE TREAT THIS MATTER WITH UTMOST URGENCY, AS
THE NEW DEMOCRATIC GOVERNMENT IS INTENT ON PERSECUTING
MY FAMILY AND THEREFORE THEY ARE DOING EVERYTHING THEY
CAN TO RECOVER THIS SO CALLED "LOOTED FUNDS",
INCLUDING CONSTANT HARRASSMENT OF MY FAMILY, SIEZURE
OF OUR PASSPORTS, CONSTANT SURVEILANCE AND EVEN THE
PROSECUTION OF MY SON FOR SOME PERCEIVED CRIMES.

PLEASE COMMUNICATE WITH ME THROUGH MY ATTORNEY: DR
JOHN TAFFIDA BY E-MAIL
drjohntaffida@... or drjohntaffida@...
AND LIASE WITH HIM TOWARDS EFFECTING THIS ARRANGEMENT.

THANK YOU AND GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY.

British Genealogical Microfiche / Stuart Raymond

Thousands of microfiche are currently available available from numerous
different publishers - societies, libraries, record offices, etc., as well
as commercial publishers. This volume reveals an extraordinarily wide range
of microfiche available to the genealogist. It aims to list everything
relating to England, Scotland and Wales that has been microfiched, but
includes offerings from publishers in Australasia and North America as well
as Britain. If you want to identify 19th century
trade directories that may be relevant to your research - or parish
registers, or monumental inscriptions, or wills, or any other original
source - just check this listing; you may be surprised by the amount of
information that you find (I certainly was when I compiled this listing!)
This volume has 124pp.; there are probably over 2,000 fiche listed.
Incidentally, if you want to see a listing of family history society
publications on microfiche, these have been listed
separately in 'Current Publications on Microfiche' by John Perkins - ask for
details.

British Genealogical Microfiche is published by the Federation of Family
History Societies, 1999. Price (Inc.UK p&P) £9.20. Overseas (airmail):
£11.50; $US18.40; $A33.50. Books will be sent with an invoice for payment on
receipt. Payment accepted in any of the currencies mentioned, by personal
cheque.

PLease enlighten me regarding these two areas of research

I am sorry for my ignorance but would really love to figure out how

I'm new to this list, and have only just started to try and trace my
family history. I'm originally from England but have lived in the US
for the last two years and am finding it very difficult to try and
trace my family from here.

The names I am interested in are Atkinson, Robinson, Beauchamp and in
particular Fyfe as Fyfe is my maiden name. All I have to go on at
the moment are the marriage certificate of my paternal grandparents,
and my paternal grandmothers death certificate (both are original).

My main stumbling block is that on the marriage certificate, my
grandfathers name appears as William Beauchamp and his father is
listed as William Hansell Beauchamp. However some months after the
marriage the certificate was ammended by the registrar, to say that
William Beauchamp should read William Fyfe, and the father should be
listed as Alexander Fyfe.

I have asked my own father about this and he has confirmed that his
father was adopted at a very young age, and never knew his real
parents, and obviously didn't find out about them until quite a late
age, but that was all my father knew. Nobody else in the family
seems to have anymore information or records about him.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that at around the early 1900's
there was no official system for adoption in the UK so I doubt there
will be any papers for me to trace. Another thing that concerns me
is that maybe the first name William isn't correct either. It seems
a bit of a coincidence that both William Beauchamp/Fyfe and his
adoptive father William Hansell Beauchamp share the same first name.

I would be very grateful for any help or direction to help me further
my investigations.

Linda

George Wright PALMER's marriage certificate 1848 (Gillingham, Kent)
lists his occupation as 'Gunner R.N.'.
I would like to apply for his naval records but need to know exactly
how to go about it and what information I'd get from them.
Has anyone in this group got any ideas/tips?

If it makes a difference, I'm pretty sure he was born in Portsea,
Hampshire. I have a scrap of information (no source) that says he was
a naval officer in Gosport.

The Dictionary of Genealogy / Terrick Fitzhugh

Fitzhugh's dictionary of genealogy is one of the most authoritative works in
English genealogy, and should be on the desk of every serious researcher.
All of the information that the beginner requires can be found in this book,
and there is much too for the experienced genealogist. There are articles on
obvious topics such as parish registers and monumental inscriptions, but
also entries for much less well-known subjects such as hatchments, friendly
societies, and excommunication. 5th ed., revised by Susan Lumas. Published
A.& C.Black, 1998. Price £28.25 (inc UK p&p). Overseas (airmail) £33.00;
$US52.80;
$A95.70. Books will be sent with an invoice for payment on receipt.

I finally accessed the 1901 census the other night, its only open
after about 7pm our time while its being tested. The first two entries
I found had translation errors in the name of the birthplaces, ie
smaresborough was put for Knaresborough.
In the FAQ section they give an area where you can supply correct
info. I tried to do that but need folio and page numbers etc. Off
other lists here are some tips:

Those of you who have been collecting the Page IDs of your 1901 people
may now convert them to PRO Piece Number and (approximate) Folio
Numbers at
part of my website.
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/jeffery.knaggs/PageIDs.html
Then, if you have access to fiche or film, you may find the page
images for free.
There are still a few "funnies" associated with a few piece numbers
(notably ships) - research is progressing.

QUOTE 2
You can find the page images for free by opening a session but not
downloading the image. The page immediately before downloading
displays the piece, folio and page number

QUOTE 3
Any ideas how to get the Folio numbers?
> Would I have to look at the consecutive pages to find it?

When you request a print of the image a dialogue box pops up with a
check box which gives you the option to print the details (Piece,
Folio, page)

with the image. This check box defaults to 'unchecked' so you have to
remember to 'check' it every time.

If you are unsure if people you locate on the census are from the same
household.....
place your cursor over the image icon next to name and a number will appear
at bottom right of your page.
Check numbers against other possibly family members
