Description
Poverty is no longer inevitable and should thus no longer be tolerated.
Poverty reduction is a key focus of the MDGs and is at the heart of international, national and NGO development objectives and activities. Recent achievements in poverty reduction have varied widely across and within countries, regions, and social groups. The current impoverishment of more than 1.4 billion people presents the world with its single greatest moral challenge. Although progress towards meeting the MDGs has been impressive in some parts of the world, they are unlikely to be met by 2015 across large swathes of sub-Saharan Africa - and even if they were, large numbers of people would remain trapped in chronic poverty, not least by the unequal sets of power relations that operate from local to global levels.
This group aims to promote and facilitate the generation, dissemination and sharing of information, knowledge, experiences, and ideas about the challenges of ending poverty in the world; and how to advance the needs and the rights to development of marginalized social groups, and a fair distribution of world's resources. We welcome discussions about ways of fighting against any form of poverty and exclusion by highlighting the causes and processes that generate poverty and injustice.
This group:
-examines the global perspective on poverty reduction issues and complex nature of poverty, its causes, and processes of poverty reduction.
-address wider strategic issues and options in policy intervention for poverty reduction.
-explores trends in poverty across and within continents, along with debates about the causes of these trends, and introduces the national and international policy architecture for poverty reduction.
