If you want to see Santa early, we've got a great picture that Irene
digitized as the intro picture on the group web site. I love the
textures she was able to get with Embroidery Magic 2. Check it out,
and I added a few links to the site as well.
If anyone has any pictures of things they digitized in EM2, feel free
to add them to the photo section.
Ah yes, if I ever buy a new machine, it will definitely be a Bernina.
My local shop's after sale support is stellar for the Bernina.

Melanie, thanks for the intro. You know, there are some gentlemen on
the group, but they haven't done their intros yet. I'm glad you are
working with Embroidery Magic 2. I hope you let us know when you are
putting some Embroidery Magic 2 designs on your site so we can see
what is being done.
I don't know if I could take your job, I'd be walking around all day
long planning on how I'd spend my next paycheck. I've shopped at
JoAnns for a long time, and will continue to, and nothing is better
than when I get the sale ad. Oh the planning, the rounding up of
friends to go when there's a great sale on patterns! Ok, I guess
you've seen people like me in the store, you know.
About answering questions: I anticipate that we'll be getting people
in here who have not yet made the decision as to what digitizing
software to use. Since you've tried so many, you'll be very much so
able to help them with comparisons and your opinions. That's helping!
Sounds like you have a lovely collection of sewing machines too.

I have been doing some type of crafting as long as I can remember. I think I started out with hand embroidery and crochet when I was around 12. (Taught to me by my Grandmother).
I started sewing around 15 years ago. And turned my love of all crafts and sewing into part of my everyday life when I became the manager of a Joann Fabrics over 13 years ago. I am still a manager and still enjoy learning new crafts every day. I guess you could say, I have "tried" almost everything that has come through my store atleast once! LOL..... My motto's been, I can't tell others how to use it, if I haven't educated myself.
My first sewing machine was a New Home (bought from my Mother-in-Law) and I still have that machine. But I also have added a Simplicity machine, Babylock Serger, Bernina Deco 500, and my newest addition, an Babylock Esante 2. I had seriously considered a Viking Designer 1 (I have a Viking Dealership set up inside my store), and I watched that machine work every day for months and then decided to go with the ESE2. My main thinking on that (other than price), was that I already had the Amazing Box to load designs on (because of my Deco 500), and didn't see the need to spend an extra 2-3 thousand dollars just to be able to put designs on a floppy instead.
As far as Software, I have EmbirdPlus for conversions, ect. I have BuzzTools (which I don't use), I have FastFills, Monogram Magic, Click N Stitch (an auto-digitizing program) and Embroidery Magic 2 (plus Aunty M's tutorial).
I have used Click N Stitch for the past 2 years and had generally good success out of it. I have a website that I try to add new designs to as regularly as possible. But I started searching for a Good Program to learn how to digitize without the use of an auto program. I wanted more control, better designs, outlining capabilities, shading, ect. I have looked at alot of programs before I decided on this one.
I look forward to meeting some wonderful ladies (and maybe gentlemen) on this group and someday I hope to be able to answer questions instead of being the one to ask so many! LOL
When I thought that all the designs were already out there (because of
so many available) I started doing local stuff. Images that are only
associated with our small area here.
Then, of course, I wanted to do things like my kitty face for the
dolls, nothing like a bunch of kids for motivation. Or my friend's
conure? What better get well perk up than having a custom digitized
portrait of your pet?
I'll probably stick to local images for a while, as it gives me
something that hasn't been done before, and an opportunity to.

Bonnie-
Well, I think a couple of things. First of all, I had always wanted a
Bernina-bought the Rose at the Bernina dealers when they were also selling
Vikings. Thought at the time the Berninas were more than I could afford
(even with the casino winnings-LOL).
Then by the time I got more into embroidery and wanted a larger field
machine, my Bernina dealer wasn't selling the Viking line anymore. The
Joann's here had a Viking area-and I did check out the Designer, but the
dealer support wasn't half of what I could get at Bernina. Also I realized
that the sales person at the Viking place knew less than I did about
embroidery and machines.
The Bernina dealer had 5 years ABSOLUTELY free maintenance on all new
machines sold and it was done in house. The Vikings had to be sent 200 miles
away for maintenance and it wasn't free......................so I opted for
the more knowledgeable Bernina dealer with all the wonderful support, clubs
etc, and I've never been sorry.

Thank you so much for the kind words - but actually the whole
set was done in EM2 - so much fun and so much control.

I bought my first embroidery machine last year, a Brother PE-400.
Nice machine, easy to use, no problems, just limited 4x4 embroidery
area. This year I sold that one and bought a Brother ULT 2002D. Nice
machine, harder to use, problems learning it. I haven't had it a
month yet, so I'm still learning.
I've used several embroidery software programs, including Embird.
I've looked at the Embroidery Magic 2 site and watched the videos
that are available at Aunty M's Designs. It looks promising. There's
just soooo many designs and free designs out there already finished I
just haven't felt the need yet.
I've tried lots of crafts including woodcrafts. I never stick to
anything long enough to become an expert/professional. I do however
return to any of the crafts when I feel the need. I like to combine
my crafts too. Like my woodcrafting skills I am putting to use to
build a thread stand for my new embroidery machine.
I ran my own Pony Party business for 10 years. I used my sewing
skills to make the costumes. It was great fun. I retired my pony
early last year. He died on July 4th of the same year. I still have
his buddy though but don't have the heart to do more parties.
I was a sysop also, back in the BBS days. I had the BBS up for 7
years. The internet took off and I finally took it down.
I'm hoping to learn a lot from your site. I might even get interested
enough to try something on my own.
Jean,
I am lusting after a new machine. I have a Rose and would really like
the larger embroidery field. What made you choose the Artista over the
Viking Designer 1?

Viva, you're welcome!
It's amazing what a PE150 can do, isn't it?
Okay, you mentioned sewing machine collection, you must divulge if you
feel like it. I just added a Necchi Supernova to my collection this
week, well, I'm awaiting its arrival.
I also use the Embird Plus program for conversions and the like, but I
never really liked their lettering system. I REALLY love the cool
things you can do with Embroidery Magic 2's lettering system, and
don't think it can be beat. Same thing with the Digitizing software.
Embird's Studio software just didn't do it for me, while Embroidery
Magic 2 definitely does!
I've recently digitized the face of my favorite cat. (If you want to
see my cat, all you need to do is click on my yahoo profile, he's got
my portrait space all to himself! Anyway, I did just his face, because
I wanted to make soft dolls for the little kids in the neighborhood,
so I did sweet kitty faces based on Beau's beautiful face.
Pets are fun to digitize. I've also done a portrait of a friend's Sun
Conure (well, actually a little conure series is brewing). I'm
thinking that as soon as I get my wacom tablet set up, it's going to
make a big difference in my control and digitizing. (It just arrived,
I'm excited, can't you tell??)

My name is Joanne, I live in New Jersey. I think I've always done
some kind of crafting. Taught myself and then other people to
crochet when I was a kid, and both my sisters and myself sewed our
clothes on Mom's good old forwards/backwards Singer machine. It even
made my wedding dress. When my children were little, I was in
creative heaven. Even the boys had (when they were little) shorts
with embroidered pockets!
I own a Babylock Ellageo. My sister got the bug first with a
Designer 1, and when my Mom's $gift, and a quilt show coincided, I
went with my husband's blessing to buy something if I liked it.
Well, I got that Ellageo and Origins in a not-to-be-passed-up deal.
I was getting quite comfortable with the machine, and was about to
plunge into the digitizing, but in April, my husband died suddenly
and I didn't touch a thing for months.
Talk about blues! The Origins boggles my mind, and I just wanted
to add lettering to designs. I was checking out Ebay, and ran across
EM 1 & 2. Did some more searching and questioning, and bought
EM2.And Aunty M's fantastic tutorial. Which I am trying to watch
over and over until I absorb it. Haven't sewn anything yet. But
that's just time thing. I'm going to a career counsellor to help
support myself, my oldest son moved home to help deal with my mother-
in-law who is 80 and has Alzeimer's, and I decided I need to be
creative again. And I'll take all the help anyone wants to give.
Hopefully I will be able to give back.
Donna-
I joined the list last nite-and I apologize for not getting around to
introducing myself yet.
I have had EM2 and Aunty M's tutorial right from the beginning............I
practiced with it quite a bit at first, and use it alot for lettering. I
fully intend to get more into the digitizing part -just never enough time to
do it all.
I really don't think I could have learned it very well without the
tutorial-all kinds of great tips and lessons.
Now for me-I am a part time RN, and pretty much self taught sewer, quilter,
crafter. I got my first embroidery machine (a Viking Rose) about 5 1/2 yrs
ago after winning a slot machine jackpot at a riverboat casino. LOL
I now have a Bernina Artista as well, and love to stitch out designs and try
to come up with projects -mostly for gifts.
Thanks for the new list.

I see 28 members on the list this morning. Only a few intros (thanks
Bette for yours) and I'm wondering if the rest of you might want to
pen (or keyboard) an intro.
Today may be the day my wacom tablet arrives, so I might well be
penning intros after that, or at least using the pen in my
digitizing.
But I digress-- intros, anyone?
Donna, I have a picture that you might like - I did it in EM2 - tried

New Angel Alphabet and Redwork Bears
Good morning, Bette!
We all get that bogged down blues at times. My local artist's guild
newsletter says that it's actually very common for artists and
creative people to have depression. Something about the way our minds
are wired--creativity being somehow associated with those tendencies
toward chemical imbalances.
So, you haven't started using Embroidery Magic 2 yet, but you have
it? That's a big step in itself, really. I've got the tutorial too,
and I haven't gotten as far in it as I'd like (am amazed at the
people who have gone all the way through it already.) But that's
cool, we do at our own pace.
So what prompted you to get the software as opposed to some other
software? Did you try any others?
===
About downsizing, that always hurts. I lost a job one time to a
company reorganization. New boss came in, canned all the people who
were tight with the old boss. The old boss' kid and mine were in the
same girl scout troop, so I was pitched out on my ear! (Since then
the company went belly up, I shouldn't be smiling about it.) Right
now, in the area I'm living in, there's a real downturn in the
economy, mostly because so much of it was driven by the lumber
industry, but also because of the governmental decisions on the
federal level that have negatively impacted so many. You're not at
all alone in that downsizing thing. It's happening to a lot of people
right now.
When I lost that job I'm talking about up there, I thought, that'll
be the last time. Of course, I don't know if it will be or not, but
what I did was work at creating a niche where I could have a bossless
income. In a way it's no fun, because I lost weekends and even
evenings sometimes, plus benefits, plus withholding, and all of that.
But on the other hand, I don't have to wish I could play Johnny
Paycheck's song, Take this Job and Shove it, over the office PA
anymore. (Rigging that up to broadcast to every office and cubicle in
that last job was a task, but I did it as my parting gift to the
place, with the help of some of the folks in the tech dept.)

Don't be surprised if there's a lag between posting and seeing your
post, because the list is set so all new users are moderated till I
change it. And since I sleep, and do other things, I'm not always
around to approve posts. But post anyway! I'll get posts approved as
soon as I'm able.
And I'd like to know a little about you. (But I'll tell a bit about
myself for starters.)
I have been a fiber artist for many years, ever since the days way
back when I used to make tie dyed banners back in the sixties.
Something about fiber resonated with me.
So, after a while, this year, in fact, I got my first embroidery
machine. After the first flush of excitement trying other people's
designs, I discovered that I couldn't find just what I wanted. What I
wanted, simply, was a butterfly body that I could embroider over
several quilted butterflies for a quilt. I didn't want to do
applique, so thought embroidering it would be perfect. But where do
you find a butterfly body that is the right length and width?
That's where my interest in digitizing began. This was about the same
time as Embroidery Magic 2 was being released. I'd looked over a lot
of programs, tried a few, and it just seemed .. right. You know the
feeling? I looked at it, and the screens made sense to me, the
technique started making sense to me, and I thought "Hey, I can do
this."
So I bought the program, got started, and made so many mistakes.
Still, I was happy and enchanted, and then Aunty M came out with her
tutorial, and I sprang on it with the first money that didn't have to
go to bills. I love it! (Although I'm such a work fiend that I hardly
ever have time to work through the lessons or practice these days--
trying to earn enough money to renovate the garage into an art studio
for my daughter.)
Anyhow, so here I am, I'm not good yet, but I've done a few freebies
and got positive feedback, I see some of my stuff being used, and
worn, and now I'm incorporating this embroidery with my quilting and
treadplay, may throw a little free form crochet into the mix before
I'm done.
I figured, I'm an experienced moderator, having been a sysop for many
years before the internet was big, and having been a content provider
during the infancy of the internet as a public space, and having run
a successful yahoo group for shade tree sewing machine mechanics. I
also figured I like this software and want it to stick around for a
while, and the best way to see that is to ensure that it has a robust
user base. So, what could I do to help?
Start this group, that's what!
Okay, ball's in YOUR court. Now, before it gets hectic, the 23 of you
who haven't done it, time for your introduction, what's your fiber
art background, what got you into embroidery, and finally,
digitizing, have you got Embroidery Magic 2, or want to get it, or
are you cruising around trying to find a digitizing program that'll
do what you want it to do? I'm listening.
Brenda, newbies serve an important purpose, in that they are the ones
who start conversations, and that's what elicits the best information.
I'll give you an idea from the other list I'm list-mom to, Wefixit.
Wefixit is a list for people who like to repair sewing machines. It's
a hobby of mine, sometimes I think it's a passion. Before I started
the list, getting information on sewing machine repair was difficult.
Now, someone will join, and post a question, like a recent one about
a sluggish motor. This elicited all kinds of help from the
experienced mechanics in the group, including some excellent posts
about the electronic aspects of sewing machines. None of that great
stuff would have happened if a newcomer hadn't asked a question. So,
while everyone's thanking the experienced techs for their wonderful
posts, I'm thinking "Thank you" to the inexperienced person who posed
a question.
This group is no different. There is useful information to be
learned, but people aren't going to just spout it out without a
little encouragement. And that is where you come in. Believe me, the
questions of a novice are like the prospector's pick axe, without
them, that gold lies down beneath the surface, never to be seen.

I think the hardest part is knowing where to start with a design and how to get from one section to another with out a lot of jump stitches. Knowing when to use what type of fill or stitch is also confusing.
Melanie, You have the same dilemmas that the rest of us do! Before I start with a design, I spend some time just looking at the artwork. I try to figure out what needs to stitch first. Some things are easy. I am working on a baby design right now. And the hands cover the baby's chin. That means the face has to stitch first. And the sleeves on his shirt have to stitch after the hands. Think of it as layers. How would it be layered in real life? When I first got started, I made a copy of the artwork and then I wrote on it. I used colored pencils to "paint" the picture and I wrote down the order that I used. It is also important to consider where to start and stop each section so that one flows smoothly into the other. That takes planning. The time you put it into it before you actually start digitizing will help you tremendously. Digitizers who work for the "big boys" like Dakota and Great Notions use a very large graphic of the artwork and they plan everything on paper before they actually start the digitizing. The plan the slope of the stitches, the start and stop points for each section, the type of digitizing tools--everything is planned out before they sit down at the computer.
Knowing what type of fill or stitch is really an artistic interpretation. If you give the same graphic to six digitizers, it will be digitized six different ways. The best advice I can give you is to start simple. Don't start with something that has a lot detail. Get to the point where you understand what will happen at the machine after you finish creating the design at your computer. Once you understand how the design file will be interpreted by the machine, then you can move on to adding detail. For example, you can create a column fill line that zigs over a half inch section. But would you really want to do that? Your machine sure won't be happy with it! But changing that column fill line to a pattern fill with a longer stitch would work great in a large section. Try it different ways and see what happens. The more you understand about how your creation is translated by the machine, the better able you will be to "see" the right kind of digitizing lines when you get started. That is one reason why I created samples of the special running stitches and special fills for complex fills. Those files are included on the tutorial CD and I would highly recommend that someone stitch out those files and keep them handy to see what the fills look like on fabric.
Well, Viva, you don't have to wait till then.
I've just ordered a Wacom tablet to use with my Embroidery Magic 2,
and although it was shipped yesterday, and won't be here till next
week, I'm already asking questions so that I can hit the ground
running, as it were. Have you ordered Margaret's Tutorial for the
program? Everything that I do RIGHT comes from her excellent advice.
Here's a link: Check out these videos to learn a little bit about the
program before you get your hands on it. It's going to make learning
it easier if you know a bit about it. (Besides which, these videos
are cool.)

Glad to see you here, and I've got you on unmoderated status now, so
don't be a stranger. Start asking questions NOW!

Oh I know that jump stitch blues. Sometimes I get carried away and
stop thinking ahead on a piece, and then suddenly jump stitches start
happening. But on one piece where I planned it all out ahead of time,
I was able to eliminate jump stitches almost entirely, or keep the
ones that occurred running UNDER a part that was later stitched out.
When I have finished something and see that I like it but that it has
a jump stitch problem, sometimes changing the order of colors
stitching will help.
I'm glad you're here, and since you've started working with the
program already, you're recruited to help people who haven't gotten
that far. Think of it as mountain climbing, and you're helping the
folks who are climbing behind you while the ones that are way up
there with Margaret are helping us!
I really believe each of us can teach something, each of us can learn
something.

I have only had my Ellure embroidery machine since May. I recently purchased the tutorial for the Embroidery Magic 2 and am still learning how to use it as well as my first embroidery machine. I am in several groups mainly for the information I can get from all the experienced and very helpful people who assist all us newbies. I just ordered this software and was happy to see someone had started
a list. I will be back when it arrives, hoping to get advice.
Thanks for the list. Viva
Hello Donna,
Thanks for the invitation and here I am! LOL
I have just purchased EM2 and have had some success with the program
but I truly have a long way to go. I think the hardest part is
knowing where to start with a design and how to get from one section
to another with out a lot of jump stitches. Knowing when to use what
type of fill or stitch is also confusing. So, I am ready to learn and
ask questions.
I look forward to meeting some new friends along the way.
Melanie
Welcome to Emagic2, a group about Embroidery Magic 2. I'm the list
mom, and I'll tell you why I started this list. In about April of
2003 I purchased a digitizing program, Embroidery Magic 2. It was the
first digitizing program that I ever set out to learn. In truth, I'm
still learning about it, but what I know so far I like. I understand
enough to know I haven't even scratched the surface.
I wanted to offer a group where you could find out about Embroidery
Magic 2, see if it is the right digitizing program for you, see if
you're even interested in digitizing, for that matter. I also wanted
to provide a place where people who have learned something about this
program could share. You teach me, I'll help you. Together we'll grow.
Now, at first, everybody is moderated when they sign on. That's so
that I can ensure that WE don't get those stupid porn posts. There
will be a lag time from when you post till when you see your post,
but don't worry, if it's not spam or porn it will get approved.
We have a full array of web goodies here to use, including a file
area, photo area, links, a database, a place for polls, all of which
can make this a vibrant place.
I'm counting on some of you Embroidery Magic 2 users to help out with
the novices and folk who are interested in learning about the program
or considering the program.
Oh, and everyone, I DO NOT sell the program. I'm just a user like
you, and am not interested in driving sales this way or that. So you
know, my opinions are my own.
Please, digitizers, don't advertise your designs unless they are made
with Embroidery Magic 2, OK? We want people to see what they can do
with the program, so you're more than welcome to showcase designs
made with Embroidery Magic 2 if you want.
