kunsendajxojn, tio sxajne neniel gxenos cxi tiun liston.

Amike salutas vin

I haven't seen this information published anywhere, even to the Estraro
(did I miss a message somehow?), so here's the information I was given:

Treasurer - Bill Harris (no surprise, I think)

Board - Joel Amis
          Anna Bennett
          Lucy Harmon

(in alphabetical order)

Based on his election showing, Tim Westover was tapped to fill in the
remaining time in David Wolff's term (two years).

One other point that may be of interest to some here (and is not related in
any way to the electons or to the LK). Mike Gamble in Oregon has encouraged
a number of Portland-area Esperanto speakers to found a new "Esperanto
Society of Oregon". Their contact information is now on ELNA's local group
& contact page (http://www.esperanto-usa.org/local.html).

Hi all,

Updated versions of ELNA's Poster Series are now available! Most
posters now also include the address for the Canadian Esperanto
Association. Thanks to Jay Fishman for putting them up on our website.
Check out:

          http://www.esperanto-usa.org/posters/posters.html

We also have some new items, especially the "Disclaimer" poster.

Each poster comes with a suggestion for using it. You can also get some
handouts and brochures, such as the One-Page Handy-Dandy Esperanto
Startup Kit. In general, a "poster" is something you'd stick on a
bulletin board, and a "handout" or "brochure" is something you'd give to
people to take home and read, but there is some overlap. (Some of the
handouts should be printed double-sided, or "back to back" in
printer-speak.)

Known problems:

(1) Some of these are rather large. It may take up to a couple of
minutes to download them over a phone line, and several seconds more
before they display with the correct fonts. Just be patient.

(2) Some posters use unusual fonts that look crummy in Acrobat Reader
(especially "Communications Revolution"). Don't panic; they print fine.

(3) The "Peace Weapon" poster is definitely broken; there should be a
dove there. Some day I'll fix it.

Also, I've found the "French endings" poster very useful at exhibits.
When you tell people that they can learn Esperanto much faster than
other languages, and they ask why, this poster is a great answer.

Thanks --

David Wolff

Primarily for those who are members of the Esperanto League for North
America and would like to write for the magazine "Esperanto USA":

ELNA sometimes receives sample copies of new books for review. In fact, we
have more books than we have reviewers. This is not a comfortable
situation, and we are always on the lookout for new writers of reviews. The
system works as follows:

(a) Someone agrees to write a review of a book for "Esperanto USA".

(b) ELNA sends that person a copy of the book in question. The book is
free, and the reviewer, once he or she has completed the review, can keep
the book (or sell it on eBay, or whatever).

(c) The reviewer agrees on a date by which the review will be returned.
This is usually about four months, but may be extended. By that date, a
review is submitted to the editor -- preferably, in electronic format.

(d) Reviews can be written in Esperanto or English, whichever the reviewer
feels is more appropriate for the book in question. Reviews may be
favorable or unfavorable -- the editor always prefers more favorable
reviews, but has himself written at least one severely cautionary review of
a book that would better have been sunk in the sea (the then-editor of "The
ELNA Newsletter" did not print it, however ...). Reviews should at least
touch on two aspects of the work being reviewed: content and language. The
reviewer will himself decide where to put his emphasis.

We have three stacks of books that have built up over the past decade and
for which reviewers have been lacking. Here are a few of the more recent
ones. If anybody would like to review _one_ of these, please e-mail me

* Suggestions

The following changes should be made, at least as experiments, to see if
they will reduce some of the unresolved issues in By-Laws. If they do
not help, ELNA can always reverse them after a trial period of a few
years.

1a. Add (at least) these standing committees to the By-Laws:
Resources/Fundraising, Local Groups, Publicity, Membership. To make
sure that these are filled, the President of ELNA will automatically
chair any standing committee that does not have a chairperson for 90
days. A brief charter for each committee is needed in the By-Laws.

1b. Instead of (1a), reduce the size of the Board to seven or nine
members. Each Director will have a specific responsibility (Resources,
Publicity, Local Groups etc) to go along with the current President, VP,
Secretary, and Treasurer. This will help the Board be more responsive
to events and proposals, and will reduce the space for non-active
Directors.

2. Add to the By-Laws, as Board member responsibilities, quarterly
reports and contacting new members, to make absolutely clear to Board
members that these are not optional. (Both of these, as in the current
Board Regulations, could be waived for specific Board members by the
President). Missing two consecutive reports means that the Director has
resigned unless the President decides otherwise within 45 days of the
second missed report. All quarterly reports will be publicly available
to ELNA members at least on our web site.

3. Add Board member responsibilities to the By-Laws. (Below is a list
of responsibilities for the National Space Society. These could be used
as a starting point.)

4. Board discussions in English. That happens to be the native language
of most people in ELNA. We are demanding that current Board members
volunteer twice, first to be a Board member, then to become fluent in a
foreign language. Undoubtedly some "eternaj komencantoj" who have
useful skills but not a command of Esperanto are being scared off. I
realize this puts one or two current Board members, whose native
language is not English, at a disadvantage. And I am familiar with the
arguments for using Esperanto. I strongly believed them and supported
them for years. After twenty years, we have obviously not proven to the
world that Esperanto works. I am forced to suspect that this is hurting
us more than it helps us. The point of any group's Board is to further
the goals of the organization, not to prove a PR point. Using the local
national language can open up the Board to dozens of people who could
contribute.

5. Enlarge the powers of the President, to more rapidly deal with
matters and to make it possible to push projects forward more easily.

6. Nominating Committee: This currently must be all non-Board members,
no doubt to avoid the possibility that the Board would nominate only its
own members and others would not be able to become candidates. But
non-Board members often do not know other members well. I suggest that
members of the Nominating Committee may be Board members, or perhaps a
maximum of three out of the five.

I also recommend these non-By-Laws actions:

1. ELNA should begin a formal process of training candidates and Board
members in normal organizational skills. These are available at low or
no cost from non-profit groups that assist other non-profits, from
books, and on the web. Every LK should have training sessions. ELNA
should make sure that the By-Laws, Board regulations, and the
Introduction for Board Members (or a similar document) are in the hands
of every potential candidate well before they decide whether to actually
run.

2. Every Board member should consider it a moral obligation to improve
his or her organizational skills, and to teach those skills to other
Board members and to potential candidates.

3. Every Board member should consider it a moral obligation to follow
the By-Laws and Board regulations, or else resign from the Board.

Expectations for NSS Board Members (_Ad Astra_, Nov/Dec 2001)

Each board member should:

1. Participate in the determination of the organization's mission and
    purpose.

2. Participate in the selection and review of the executive director.

3. Participate in raising funds for the organization.

4. Participate in financial oversight of the organization.

5. Understand the budgeting process and be prepared to participate in
    it.

6. Determine and monitor the organization's programs and services.

7. Enhance the organization's public image.

8. Assess and try to improve the board's performance.

9. Suggest possible nominees to the board who are people of achievement
and distinction who can make significant contributions to the work of
the board and the Society's progress.

10. Serve in leadership positions or undertake special assignments
willingly and enthusiastically when asked. Actively serve on at least
one committee.

11. Attend all board meetings.

12. Prepare for and participate in board meetings, mail votes, and
committee hearings, including appropriate organizational activities.
Ask timely and substantive questions at board and committee meetings
consistent with their conscience and convictions, while supporting the
majority decision on issues decided by the board. Maintain
confidentiality of the board's executive sessions. Suggest agenda items
periodically for board and committee meetings to ensure that significant
policy-related matters are addressed.

13. Avoid asking for special favors from the staff, including special
requests for extensive information, without at least prior consultation
with the chair of the Executive Committee or appropriate committee
chairperson.

14. Treat each other in a civil and professional manner at all times.

Adopted by the NSS Executive Committee, 5 December 1998.

Hi all,

Here are some notes on ELNA as an organization and its problems.

* ELNA's needs

About fifteen years ago, having watched ELNA from the inside for some
years, I concluded that our lack of progress was due to neglect of three
key areas: resources (in particular fundraising), local groups, and
publicity. Certainly, people can disagree as to whether these
particular three areas are the most urgent or only keys to success. For
example, Kent Jones recently sent a message to the Board urging us to
treat our members better by establishing a committee to advocate for
them. Kent has made this suggestion every year or two for many years.
But in any case, it was clear that ELNA was not dealing with crucial
needs.

For a long time, I urged ELNA to work on these problems. It is
impossible for "everyone" to be responsible for (for example) publicity;
it is a management truism that if everyone is responsible for something,
then in fact no one is responsible for it. ELNA would not set up
committees or commissioners to be responsible, and no one volunteered.
As President, I struggled to find volunteers for these areas, with very
little success.

It has been many years without progress -- years without even being able
to set up committees or commissioners for these areas. Just this year,
the Board has had a long discussion of where to cut costs because of our
ongoing deficit. Find more money? Hardly mentioned. Become more
effective? Only in the most insignificant areas. Instead the reaction
is to slash the organization and deliver fewer services.

I acknowledge that some small advances have been made, although usually
by individual volunteers instead of the Board or the organization. We
have the perfect toll-free telephone number (if only we were getting it
out to the public, and if only it didn't drive away informpetintoj by
refusing to take their names). We have a very good website (if only we
told more people about it). NASK is still going strong (again, it could
use more publicity to gain more students). Yet it is obvious that the
general public knows almost nothing about Esperanto and less about ELNA.
Our membership count has at best hit one thousand, in a country of 280
million people. I refuse to believe that only one person in 280,000
wants to join ELNA. I believe instead that ELNA has failed.

* Failure of ELNA to meet its needs

After all these years and all this effort, I am now convinced that our
difficulty is structural: that something about our organization
prevents us from solving our problems. Meta-problems, if you will.
ELNA is seriously dysfunctional. It has made no progress on its key
needs, nor even understood why it has made no progress. Some of this is
due to our Board members; some is due to our By-Laws; no doubt some is
due to other causes. A brief description of these follows, although I
admit that I have less confidence in this analysis than in my earlier
description of our key needs.

First, we have nominated and elected too many people to the Board who do
not work to improve our organization. It is common for Board members to
*not* participate in discussions, to *not* take on the tasks that ELNA
needs to accomplish, to *not* contribute anything except words. (And
since we have never lacked for words, this is not necessarily helpful.)
Too many Board members have no experience with nonprofit organizations.
No expertise in fundraising or publicity. And I do not recall ever
seeing someone make an effort to learn these things. I was disappointed
to see how often some Directors of a national organization would promise
to do a task and then fail to do it. I expected broken promises at the
local level, but when someone agrees to be a Director of a national
group, they really should try to keep their promises.

Second, I think our By-Laws are inadequate. They create offices but do
not define the responsibilities or the authority of these offices, so it
is too easy for everyone to wait for someone else, or to simply do
nothing. A flexible set of By-Laws is a good thing, of course, but ours
is beyond flexible: it's limp. This is probably a reaction to the
Connor / EANA problems, but it is likely that the solution has gone too
far and created a different set of problems.

* Possible remedies

In the next message I have listed some changes to our By-Laws and Board
Regulations that may help. Some of them would significantly change the
By-Laws. I do not see this as a difficulty. Our organization is
currently so badly broken that any change could hardly make things
worse.

It is possible that ELNA could significantly improve its effectiveness
without any of these changes. If several Board members worked to learn
how to run an organization, and were willing to spend the time and
energy to work together, even the current By-Laws might work. I have
not seen this happen in the past twenty years. Indeed, I have seen just
the opposite. One long-term and apparently respected Board member feels
that elected officials of ELNA have no obligation to do anything for
ELNA besides discussion, and has repeatedly opposed any efforts to
change this. Therefore I see no likelihood that this will happen.

* Personal feelings

I am resigning as a member of the Board of Directors of ELNA. I have
been on the Board since 1983 (except for one year), including six years
as President of ELNA. In those twenty years of working for this
organization, I have seen so little progress that I can no longer stand
to spend time and energy on it. I am tired, I see no hope for ELNA as
it currently stands, and I believe my efforts on the Board are for
naught.

Let me be clear that I have considerable hope for Esperanto as a
language and as a movement. I am not resigning as an ordinary member of
ELNA. I intend to occasionally do small projects (but only ones I feel
like doing). I continue to work as a volunteer in my local area. It is
the structure of ELNA as an organization, as a tool to bring individuals
together for a common purpose, that seems hopelessly dysfunctional to
me.

So with great reluctance I am following wise words from another sphere
of activity: "Change your organization, or change your organization."

I am handing over ownership of the elna-estraro mailing list to Alex and
removing my address from the list. If you wish to contact me, feel free
to do so at my e-mail address, paper-mail address, or by phone (all in
the latest Adresaro).

Respectfully submitted,

David Wolff

TWO BOOK SPECIALS AT ELNA

(1) In late 2000, Mrs. Doris Connor kindly donated the remaining contents
of the book service of the old Esperanto Association of North America
(EANA) to ELNA. For the most part, there was only one copy each per title.
However, EANA had large stocks of several books, primarily prewar classics
from Literatura Mondo which are no longer generally available.

Three of these books are:

"Tri homoj en boato" by Jerome K. Jerome, translated from English by G.
Badash. The original of this translation was a humorous novel, about three
men boating down the Thames River in England, very popular during the first
half of the twentieth century in the English-speaking world;
science-fiction readers may remember Robert Heinlein's reference to it in
"Have Space Suit, Will Travel", and more recently award-winning authoress
Connie Willis has written an enjoyable pastiche (which, unlike the
original, involves time travel). 256p. Available at ELNA for $6.00.

"Maria kaj la grupo" by Imre Baranyai (Emba) is an early novel of life in
the Central European Esperanto world between the wars. It tells of Maria,
the almost faceless and ignored driving force behind a local Esperanto
group, and of the conflict between the two branches of the Esperanto
movement, the "neutral" movement and the "workers'" movement. Emba is
better known for his poetry ("Ekzilo kaj azilo"), but this story shows his
strengths as a novelist. It was reprinted in 1990 by Pro Esperanto in
Vienna, but this is the first edition from Literatura Mondo. 172p.
Available from ELNA for $5.00.

"Johano la brava" is an epic poem by Hungarian epic poet Sandor Petofi,
translated by Kalman Kalocsay. Tells how poor boy Janchi Kukoricha sets out
to conquer Fairyland for the love of his Ilnjo. This is considered one of
Kalocsay's finest translated works. 65p. Available from ELNA for $3.00.

For a limited time ELNA is offering all three books, ordered as a single
unit, for $11.20 plus $1.80 shipping and handling (California residents add
appropriate sales tax). Go to the ELNA storefront
(http://www.esperanto-usa.org/retbutiko.html), fill in the form, and
instead of ordering any single book, in the comments box simply type:
"Special Order 1".

Note: If you'd also like a copy of Keiji Nakazawa's famous
comic-book-format novel (284p., $10.00) about life in Hiroshima during that
city's last months before the fall of the atomic bomb (the climax of the
tale, which despite the word "comic" is in no way comic), you can add it to
your special order by typing in the comments box "Special Order 1 + N". The
total price will be $19.20 plus $1.92 shipping and handling (California
residents again add appropriate sales tax).

---

(2) One of the better known poets writing in Esperanto during the 20th
century was Edwin de Kock, from South Africa. De Kock left his homeland in
the early nineties and came to America, where he now lives (in Texas). Over
the course of various moves, de Kock had to get rid of much valuable
material, and among the things he passed on to ELNA were his personal
remaining stocks of five of his poetic works. These are: "Poemaro kaj
prozeroj" ($3.00, 106p), "Plukonstrue" ($1.80, 40p), "Saluton al la suno"
($3.00, 90p), "Japaneskoj" ($3.00, 114p) and "Kvin elementoj" ($2.10, 55p).
While not a complete collection of de Kock's work (missing are, among
others, "Ombroj de la kvara dimensio" and "Fajro sur mia lango", two of his
earliest collections), they will give you a good idea of de Kock's work.

These five books are, for a limited time, available as a set for $10.32
plus $1.80 shipping and handling (California residents add appropriate
sales tax) and can be ordered in the same way as the three books mentioned
above, except in the comments block write "Special Order 2".

You can also add "Nudpieda Gen" to this order if you'd like ("Special Order
2 + N"); the price will be $18.32 plus $1.83 shipping and handling (and, as
required, sales tax).

Note: because these offers involve an automatic 20% discount, the usual
ELNA membership discount of 10% is not applicable. N.B.: HONORARY MEMBERS
OF ELNA GET A 25% DISCOUNT ON ALL BOOK PURCHASES, AND SO SHOULD ORDER THESE
BOOKS SEPARATELY!

Several "new" used books available at ELNA. These books are available in
only one copy each; first come, first served. To order, go to
http://www.esperanto-usa.org/retbutiko.html. Fill in the form with address
and credit-card information. Don't look in the catalog for these books;
they aren't there. (Though an asterisk before the name indicates that the
book, in this edition, _is_ available through ELNA.) Simply type the
title(s) into the special block left free for comments. Credit-card payment
only accepted for these (we can't hold books while waiting for a check to
arrive; unfortunately, in a previous sale we tried that and the check never
arrived). There will be an additional ten percent charge for shipping;
books will be shipped only by US Postal Service media mail.

There are about three of these that I want for my collection, so if nobody
orders them within the next couple of days, I'll buy them myself.

---

Barthelmess, N.: "Ne plu ludo..." Paris: SAT, 1973. 127 p. Paper. $2.54.
Five short stories in relatively simple language. Good shape.

"Direktivoj de la XXIII Kongreso de KPSU por la kvinjara plano de disvolvo
de la popola ekonomio de USSR dum la jaroj 1966 1970". Moscow: Komisiono
pri internaciaj ligoj de sovetaj esperantistoj, 1966. 74 p. Paper. $1.48.
Economic document in inimitable Soviet style. Of historical interest only.
Some light-paling on cover; also moderately water-stained, which does not
affect readability.

S^varc, Teodoro S.: "Maskerado c^irkau^ la morto". La Laguna: Stafeto,
1965. 247 p. Paper. $7.50. The original edition of "Schwartz"s (Soros's)
book about a Jewish family surviving the Holocaust's penetration into
Hungary in 1944. Recently reprinted by UEA, and translated into English,
this is the original edition, and in very good shape for its age.

*Mattos, Geraldo (ed.): "100-jara Esperanto". Chapeco: Fonto, 1987. 240 p.
Paper. $4.80. A compendium of 16 articles about Esperanto and related
topics, put together for the hundred-year anniversary of Esperanto.
Interesting material; book is in good shape.

Lapenna, Ivo: "Elektitaj paroladoj kaj prelegoj". Rotterdam: UEA, 1966. 152
p. Paper. $3.04. A collection of Ivo Lapenna's speeches and lectures on
various topics relating to Esperanto and the Esperanto movement. While this
was undoubtedly published under the influence of the Lapenna Cult of
Personality that dominated the Esperanto movement at the time (Lapenna was
President of UEA, and, speaking charitably, a very hands-on kind of guy),
I've always found him to be eminently readable. Good condition except for
some water-staining around the bottom.

Raeva, Lidija (ed.): "Septembro estig^os majo". Sofia: Sofia-Pres, 1983.
197 p. Paper. $3.94. An anthology of 20th century Bulgarian prose and
poetry, some 28 authors being represented. Good shape except for
water-staining around the bottom.

Bormann, Werner: "Bona s^anco". La Laguna: Stafeto, 1970. 246 p. Paper.
$4.92. A collection of talks on Esperanto and its relationship (and how to
promote it to) the international community, particularly in Europe. Bormann
was a recognized authority on the subject during the Lapenna period. Good
shape; there's water-staining here, too, but for some reason (special
paper?) it appears only on the edges of the pages, and not on the pages
themselves.

*Maupassant, Guy de: "Sinjoro Jokasto kaj aliaj noveloj". Chapeco: Fonto,
1987. 111 p. Paper. $2.22. 18 short stories by the French master,
translated by Daniel Luez. Book is in excellent shape.

Bartelmess, N.: "Mia vivo". Laroque Timbaut: La Juna Penso, no date. 72 p.
Paper. $1.44. Autobiography plus several poems by the author. Bad glue (one
has the feeling that if one is not careful the pages will pull loose and
fall out) and some bending of the first few pages at the corners, but
otherwise in good shape.

*Piron, Claude: "Lasu min paroli plu". Chapeco: Fonto, 1984. 128 p. Paper.
$2.56. Companion text for "Gerda Malaperis"; the intention was to provide
supplementary reading material, lesson by lesson. Good shape.

*Szathmari, Sandor: "Perfekta civitano". Budapest: Hungara
Esperanto-Asocio, 1988. 456 p. Paper. $9.12. 26 short stories written by
the author of "Vojag^o al Kazohinio" during the fifties and sixties, if I
remember correctly; most of them were previously published in "Mas^inmondo"
and "Kain kaj Abel". Worth reading. (Many of them are on-line at Jurij
Finkel's site, but Jurij may be taking his site down soon.) Good shape.

Szilagyi, Ferenc (ed.): "Sveda novelaro". 1985 edition from
SAT-bros^urservo. 235 p. Paper. $4.70. 20 short stories written by authors
with roots in the Swedish workers' movement of the earlier part of the 20th
century. Soiled cover, some crumpling at the corners of pages, otherwise in
good shape.

Caraca, Bento de Jesus: "Galileo Galilei". Porto: Portugala Eldona Rondo,
1948. 62 p. Paper. $1.24. A life of Galileo. Includes fold-out diagram of
the evolution of Western science. Fairly good shape for a 54-year-old book.

Rosbach, Johan Hammond: "La mirinda eliksiro". Aabyhoj: Dansk
Esperanto-Forlag, 1968. 99 p. Paper. $1.98. 14 short stories by the
Norwegian Esperantist author Rosbach, one of the more respected names in
Esperanto prose for the past half-century. Excellent shape.

Last week's mailing was quite successful; apparently a lot of people were
happy to be able to add used books to their libraries. So far, we've sold
all but three of those advertised, and received quite a bit of money, which
will certainly help ELNA in its current financial situation, and -- more
importantly -- will clear up some space in the Central Office. So now I'm
mostly finishing up this collection of books sent to us by Helen Burke.
Here, too, there are a few that I consider valuable. While prices of most
of these books are calculated by number of pages at 3 cents per page, I've
"eyeballed" the prices on a few of the items that I consider more valuable.

If you want to purchase any of these -- note: on a "first come, first
served" basis -- we are offering them here over the internet. Because of
some problems some people had (don't carry credit cards; and there seems to
be some problem with Netscape 6 and the comments block at our purchase page
on the internet), here's the procedure for purchasing

Go to our web page http//www.esperanto-usa.org/retbutiko.html .

Go immediately to "View Cart"

Click on the "Checkout Stand" button.

Fill out the necessary information on the form, preferably everything, but
specifically your street address, your e-mail address, and your credit card
information.

Fill in the "Comments" block with information about the books you want to buy.

Click on "submit your secure order".

_Everybody_ should at least send us a form; since this is
first-come-first-served, these forms at the very least determine who gets
what, since they arrive in chronological order.

If you don't have a credit card, advise us of this in the comments block
and ask us to calculate your cost and inform you. We will put the requested
books aside and hold them for you for five working days (one week), while
you send us a check. After that, they go to the next person in line.

If you can't fill in the comments block (there seems to be some trouble
with Netscape 6), fill in the rest of the form; then send us an e-mail
advising us of the fact that you sent us a form and including the
information that you would otherwise have put in the comments block. By
preference, _don't_ send us any financial information (credit card number,
etc.) by e-mail; use the secure form for that. We still need the on-line
form for your financial information and to determine your precedence in
case more than one person asked for the same book (which happened on a
regular basis last week).

When indicating which book you want, if there's a number in parentheses
next to the title, include it as well; that indicates which copy you want.
In several cases, there are significant differences between the state of
identical books. Note: if you want book (2) specifically, but are willing
to accept another copy if (2) is already gone, please make sure that you
indicate that.

I hope that this is all moderately clear. The list is at the bottom.

---

ELNA has also stocked a lot of new titles; when you get the next issue of
"Esperanto USA" you'll note that the "New Books" section takes up almost
half the magazine. I don't know whether these are on-line yet or not. If
you're interested in these, you can download the list (in Microsoft Word
.doc-format) using your browser by going to
http://donh.best.vwh.net/Esperanto/NB/ . Download the list by
right-clicking on the indicated link and selecting "Save link as ..."
(Netscape) or "Save target as ..." (Internet Explorer). If these aren't yet
in the on-line catalog, you can order any that you want in the same way as
the used books shown below, at the prices indicated in the new-books document.

---

Cresswell, John and Hartley, John "Teach Yourself Esperanto" (1). The 1973
paperback printing of this book. Battered, taped, and heavily annotated
throughout. 205p. $6.15.

Cresswell, John and Hartley, John "Teach Yourself Esperanto" (2). The 1973
paperback printing of this book. Cover is somewhat damaged, but whole. Some
annotation in the book. Edges of vocabulary pages at end have been cut up a
bit to allow alphabetic tabbing, which I think is actually a valuable extra
feature. 205p. $6.15.

Auld, William: "Pasxoj al plena posedo" (1). First edition (1968). Cover
discolored, some annotations. 240p. $7.20.

Auld, William: "Pasxoj al plena posedo" (2). Third edition (1973). Some
lessons heavily annotated. 240p. $7.20.

Auld, William: "Pasxoj al plena posedo" (3). Third edition (1973). Some
lessons heavily annotated. 240p. $7.20.

Auld, William: "Pasxoj al plena posedo" (4). Third edition (1973). Some
lessons heavily annotated; two collections of pages bound with paperclips,
which have left rust stains. 240p. $7.20.

Pettyn, Andrzej "Cxu vi parolas Esperante?" 1970 textbook of Esperanto for
Polish speakers (but it was quite popular internationally in its day).
Cover is battered, contents in good shape but paper is turning brown,
particularly at the edges. 318p. $9.54.

Rossetti, Cezaro "Kredu min, Sinjorino!" The original edition from Heroldo,
undated. Cover is in poor condition (front is hanging from spine by a
thread), but contents appear to be OK. Bound. 257p. $7.71.

Woolf, Felix "English phrases and expressions in Esperanto" (1). Fairly
good condition, though original spine taping is in process of
disintegration. Plenty of new copies at ELNA ($4.50). 119p. $3.57.

Woolf, Felix "English phrases and expressions in Esperanto" (2). Pretty
good condition, previous owner's name scrawled on cover. Plenty of new
copies at ELNA ($4.50). 119p. $3.57.

Noll, Margarethe "Cxu vi deziras korespondi?" Little booklet in good shape;
useful for paper correspondence, probably less so for the e-mail age. 16p.
$0.48.

Bulter, Montagu C. "Step by Step in Esperanto" (1). The classic text /
reference. Original dustcover has been replaced by butcher-paper cover,
otherwise in good shape. The eighth (1965) edition. ELNA also has plenty of
this book in a later edition ($13.00). Bound. 281p. $8.43.

Bulter, Montagu C. "Step by Step in Esperanto" (2). The classic text /
reference. Original dust cover, which is torn at front edge, otherwise in
good shape. The eighth (1965) edition. ELNA also has plenty of this book in
a later edition ($13.00). Bound. 281p. $8.43.

"Posx-Kantaro de KLEG". 21 songs in small-format mimeo booklet, apparently
put together for the 1965 postkongreso in Kyoto. Fairly good shape, name of
former owner (apparently Cecelia Peterson) on the cover. 24p. $0.72.

Zamenhof, L. "Fundamento de Esperanto". Romanian edition of 1908, in fairly
good condition for its age. 92p. $2.76.

Mann, W. W. "Marlborough's Esperanto Self-Taught". No date on this third
edition, though the book was originally published in 1908. Not the best of
textbooks, mainly consists of word-lists alphabetized in English with
Esperanto equivalents and pronunciation. Fairly good shape. 127p. $3.81.

Zamenhof, L. L. "Proverbaro Esperanta". The Stafeto edition of 1961. Poor
shape (front cover is loose, spine is split) but contents are clean and
usable. New copies available from ELNA ($9.20). 167p. $5.01.

Lewis, Gabriel Dawson "Notes on English Grammar for Students of Esperanto"
(1). 2nd (1957) edition. Good shape, though some internal spotting, mainly
on final pages. Old copy of the Esperanto key will be included with this
(too small to sell separately; new copies are available from ELNA and cost
only $0.50). 48p. $1.44.

Lewis, Gabriel Dawson "Notes on English Grammar for Students of Esperanto"
(2). 2nd (1957) edition. In shape as good as new. 48p. $1.44.

Butler, Montagu C. "Esperanto for beginners". Booklet, fairly good shape,
indeterminate age (stamp on cover from Esperanto Book Service in Brooklyn,
NY -- anybody remember that?). ELNA sells this new for $1.50. 24p. $0.72.

Benczik, Vilmos "Baza literatura krestomatio". Third edition, 1986. Cover
is somewhat frayed, but complete; otherwise, good shape. A few new copies
of the same edition are available from ELNA for $9.50 each. 282p. $8.46.

Butler, Montagu C. "Esperanto-English Dictionary". Probably the hardback
edition, but that really doesn't matter since the cover is gone. Contents
are in pretty good shape. New copies (paperback) are available from ELNA
for $15.00. 450p. $13.50.

Stuttard, Mason "The Esperanto Teacher". A standard textbook, good shape,
2nd edition; ELNA currently carries this book for $2.90, so I don't think
I'll ask for the usual 3 cents a page ... 107p. $2.00.

Herczek, Ferenc "Hungaraj Rakontoj". Also in good shape. Right now, you can
get this "new" (unused) from ELNA for $1.40. 48p. $1.00.

Hibbert, Gerald K. "La esenco de la Kvakerismo". Good shape, 1962. 37p. $1.11.

"Konsiloj kaj demandoj" for the Society of Friends (Quakers). Good shape.
29p. $0.87.

Private, Edmond "Vivo de Zamenhof". The Esperanto Publishing Company's
bound version (1967), excellent shape, original dust cover. I don't think
this is currently available (though ELNA sells a cardboard-cover version of
the English translation). 133p. $10.00.

Schwartz, Raymong "Ne kiel Meier!" Schwartz's contribution to the
occasional -ata/-ita controversy. Good shape. ElNA has lots of unused
copies for $1.50 apiece. 48p. $1.00.

Fulcher & Long "English-Esperanto Dictionary". Hardback, good shape (dust
cover is somewhat rubbed). Third edition, 1963. ELNA sells this new
(without dustcover) for $13.00. 336p. $10.08.

"Tri satiroj". Paper, good shape, published in Ljubljana in 1957; three
satires by mid-century Jugoslavian authors. 38p. $1.14.

Rustaveli, Shota "Aforismoj". Contains a series of aphorisms in both
Esperanto and Georgian (facing pages) by medieval Georgian author. Good
shape. My short review of the book is available at
http//donh.best.vwh.net/Esperanto/Literaturo/Recenzoj/aforismoj.html. 79p.
$2.37.

Oyen, Hendrik van "Leo Tolstoj kaj la Montprediko". Quaker booklet. Cover
is somewhat spotted, but solid, contents in good shape. 13p. $0.39.

"Esperanto the International Language". A "special educational issue" of
the "Esperanto Review" (now Esperanto USA) from the mid-sixties, under the
editorship of Donald Broadribb. Various articles about Esperanto, plus
short course and small vocabulary. Good shape. 40p. $1.20.

"Sub la signo de la verda stelo". Anecdotes from Esperantist life by
various individuals. Some grease-marking on cover, otherwise in good shape
except for a couple of pages with paper-clip rust marks (paper clip is
still there). 71p. $2.13.

Mickiewicz, Adam "Sinjoro Tadeo". Famous polish epic poem, translated by
Antoni Grabowski. Good shape, no dust-cover; the 1955 Polonia edition,
bound, unavailable elsewhere. (If all you want is the content, UEA has a
1986 paperback edition, in the series Oriento-Okcidento, for ten or eleven
euros.) Contains written donation greeting to the Chomettes (famous L.A.
Esperanto family). 334p. $20.00.

Gibran, Kahlil "La profeto". Roan Orloff Stone's translation. Stafeto
Beletraj Kajeroj 13, 1962. Cover is loose, contents are in good shape.
Handwritten gift dedication inside front cover "Kun la plej elkoraj
bondeziroj al Gesamideanoj Peterson" (presumably Charles and Cecelia in
southern California) "de Katinjo 'S^ulc'". 126p. $5.00.

Orzeszko, Eliza "Marta". Zamenhof's translation. Second edition (1924) from
the Esperantista Centra Librejo in Paris. Readable, but brown and
disintegrating. Some annotation. 237p. $7.11.

Privat, Edmond: "Vivo de Gandhi". Stafeto Beletraj Kajeroj 32, 1967. Good
condition, but like other books in this series will require careful
handling when you read it (dried glue). 159p. $4.77.

Beaucaire, Louis: "Fabeloj de la verda pigo". Humorous short stories about
Esperanto, many illustrations. Good condition, some annotation. 110p. $3.30.

Prus, B.: "La faraono". Translated by Kabe. The original 1913 Hachette
edition, in three volumes. Paper is browned with age, some minor
annotations; third volume is split down the spine. Otherwise, in fairly
good shape after almost 90 years. 630p. $25.00.

Szilagyi, Ferenc (ed) et al: "Norda Prismo". 30 issues of the famous
literary magazine of the fifties and sixties. You can order one issue (our
choice) for $2.00; but if anybody orders the entire set ($30.00) by Monday
morning, it goes to them.

Helen Burke, a long-time ELNA member, recently sent ELNA a number of books
that, for various reasons, she has to dispose of. We'll be selling these as
used books; several (Andersen, Schwartz, Lusin) might be more valuable as
auction items next year, but right now we don't have the space to keep them
at the Central Office.

This is a list of somewhat less than half the books we received; I'll be
adding to it later. If you would like to purchase any of these -- note: on
a "first come, first served" basis -- we are first offering them here over
the internet. You can purchase them by credit card (not check or cash). To
do so, go to our book service (http://www.esperanto-usa.org/retbutiko.html
), go to our catalog, go immediately to check out (without purchasing
anything), fill in the form with name, address, and credit-card number, and
in the comments block put the titles of the books you want to buy. We will
total the price, charge your card, and send the books to you. Note that
ELNA members get their usual discount, and there will be a charge for
shipping and handling and (California only) sales tax. Don't forget to
include your e-mail address in case we need to contact you.

Prices are generally calculated by number of pages at 3 cents per page. The
Andersen book is an exception, as (a) I didn't feel like counting the
(unnumbered) pages and (b) in any case I considered it more valuable than
the number of (large format) pages would indicate. Unless otherwise
indicated, books have paper covers and are available in only one copy.

---

"Esperantaj Prozajxoj". An early entry in the "Kolekto Esperanta aprobita
de Do Zamenhof", published by Hachette exactly 100 years ago. A real
rarity, unfortunately disintegrating, though still easily readable. Some
annotations, primarily on blank pages at the end. 246p. $7.38.

Szilagyi, Ferenc: "Koko krias jam!" 13 pieces in this Hungarian Esperanto
Association reprint of a classic collection from Stafeto. Good shape.
Someone left a color photo of Alberta Casey's painting of Zamenhof inside.
197p. $5.91.

Cresswell, John and Hartley, John: "Teach Yourself Esperanto". The 1973
paperback printing of this book. Battered, taped, and heavily annotated
throughout. 205p. $6.15.

Szilagyi, Dr. Ferenc: "A Practical Course in Esperanto". Fred Wadham's
adaptation for the English-speaking countries, the 1955 ninth edition from
the Esperanto Publishing Co. This copy apparently came from the Esperanto
Library in Middleton, WI, originally. Fairly good shape, no annotations.
99p. $2.97.

MacGill, Stefan: "La lauxta vekhorlogxo". The 1988 edition (which ELNA
still carries in stock at $10.30), good condition. 200p. $6.00

"Turista kantaro". A rather interesting collection of 50 or 60 songs in
Esperanto, lyrics and music, including (among other things) Kalocsay's
translation of "The International". No date is given, but I think it was
published (by Monda Turismo) in 1983. Good shape. 84p. $2.52.

Faulhaber, F.: "Ne tiel, sed tiel cxi!" Classic commentary about Esperanto
grammar, still stocked by ELNA ($2.80). Good shape. 63p. $1.89.

"Makedona antologio". A short collection of prose and poetry from
Macedonia, back when it was still a province of Yugoslavia. Some
annotations on back cover, front cover, inside front; also contains a flier
about "Tito on Esperanto" that somebody left inside the book. Generally
good shape. 154p. $4.62.

Hill, Margaret, and Auld, William: "Floroj sen kompar'". Book of
British folk songs translated by the two authors, not IMHO as good as its
companion volume ("Kantanta mia bird'") but still nice for those who like
this sort of thing (in Esperanto, of course). Lyrics and melody, with a
page of guitar chords in the back. Good condition. 87p. $2.68.

Pusxkin, A.: "Tri Noveloj". An old book, very good shape for its age; from
the series "Internacia Mondliteraturo", 1923. 67p. $2.01.

Turgenev, I.S.: "Elektitaj noveloj". Same series as the Pushkin book,
equally good shape. 81p. $2.43.

Andersen, H. C.: "La Marvirineto". A large-format, bound children's edition
of "The Little Mermaid", translated by Ib Schleicher and published in 1962.
Many color illustrations. Upper two inches and lower one inch of spine are
somewhat battered, taped, tape dry and falling off; contents are in good
shape. Pages are not numbered. This is valuable enough for me to ask $10.00
for it for ELNA.

Pettyn, Andrzej: "Cxu vi parolas Esperante?" 1970 textbook of Esperanto for
Polish speakers (but it was quite popular internationally in its day).
Cover is battered, contents in good shape but paper is turning brown,
particularly at the edges. 318p. $9.54.

Sirbu, I.: "Miksajxo - Facila Lego-materialo en Esperanto". Relatively
recent but antique-looking (mimeoed) publication, printed by the author in
Romania. 22p. $0.66.

Francis, John I.: "Vitralo". #4 in the "Beletraj kajeroj de Stafeto", John
Francis's most famous collection of short stories. Published in 1960. As
with all the books in this series, the glue has dried by now and the
contents have become separated from the cover, which is however still
present. Some spotting along the page edges. 135p. $4.05.

Bogh-Hogsted, Agnes: "Misteroj de l' vivo". Collection of five short
stories from Denmark, book is in very good shape, dates from 1950 (Dansk
Esperanto-Forlag). 100p. $3.00.

Schwartz, Raymond: "Vole.. ...Novele". A collection of Schwartz's short
stories and articles, primarily from the fifties. This is the original
bound Torben Kehlet (TK) edition from 1971. The dust cover is somewhat
battered, particularly at the front top, but -- aside from the name
"CADMUS" block-printed along the top and bottom -- everything else is in
quite good shape. 192p. $5.76.

Lusin: "Noveloj de Lusin". Short stories by China's most famous
20th-century author. Dustcover is battered but contents are in good
shape.Bound. 488p. $14.64.

Balzac, Honore de: "La firmao de la kato kiu pilkludas". Also from the
series "Internacia Mondliteraturo", 1924. Pages are a bit dark, but
otherwise in quite good shape. 75p. $2.25.

Evans, Marta: "Kantfesto I". Spiral bound, red paper cover. 83 songs,
translated into Esperanto, lyrics and melodies. Includes Piron's article
"Pri kantotradukado". 102p. $3.06.

Same book, but with blue plasticized covers. 102p. $3.06.

The ELNA Central Office today received about a hundred copies each of the
aligxilo for the 88th World Esperanto Congress in Gothenburg (Goteborg),
Sweden, in 2003. We also received about a hundred copies of the "Unua
Bulteno" for the congress.

The Aligxilo is much as it has been for other congresses, except blue
instead of yellow (Fortaleza). The "Unua Bulteno" is a
professionally-designed six-fold flier, completely in Esperanto, on slick
paper. Besides the usual pictures intended to attract tourists, it contains
a comprehensive two-fold map of the city, including indications of walking
distances to the congress center, and a two-fold colorful design of the
congress center itself.

If you're interested in next year's UK, you might want to get copies of
these as early as possible (note that the most favorable prices are for
those who sign up before the end of this year). Obviously, with only a
hundred copies we're not going to be adding them to a mailing to our
members. If you want one, please send ELNA (PO Box 1129, El Cerrito CA
94530) a stamped (37 cents), self-addressed envelope; if you want to
receive the flier unfolded, make sure that the envelope is a long (legal)
envelope rather than a short (personal stationery) envelope.

---

We've received our first batch of UEA's new edition of Boris Kolker's
attractive text / reader for advanced students of the language "Vojagxo tra
Esperanto-Lando"; price, $22 plus the usual 10% for shipping/handling. It's
not yet up on our web site, but you can order it by filling in the form at
the site (http://www.esperanto-usa.org/retbutiko.html), leaving the order
part empty, and requesting the book in the "comments" block. Right now we
only have four copies available, and it may be a while before we receive
our next order (this one came unconscionably quickly). Note: The book is in
a medium format and is 278 pages long. Lots of pictures, fair number of
notes, a total of 26 lessons, each of which concludes with a set of
exercises about the reading material called "Lingva Praktiko". The book is
printed on heavy-stock slick paper, which makes it heavier (and probably
more durable) than it looks like it ought to be. For some inexplicable
reason the final (left-hand) page is numbered 279 rather than 278.

Correction ... five copies. We also received a review copy of the book. If
there is anyone in any of the groups I'm sending this to who (a) is a
member of ELNA, (b) feels competent to review this book for "Esperanto
USA", and (c) would like to commit to the task, please write to
donh@..., subject line "Kolker-Recenzo". You'll receive the
review copy of the book for free and, once the review is written and
submitted, it will be yours to keep. First come, first served.

Note: we have a stack of other books waiting for reviewers. I will try to
put a list on-line before long, but if anybody would like to take pot-luck,
please let me know at the address given in the previous paragraph.

^Ciu membro
rajtas legi ilin senpage. La plej rapida kaj senkosta maniero estas
per la reto. La raportoj troveblas ^ce la ttt-ejo

June 21-24. You can register via http://www.esperanto.org/ELNA2002/ .
(Note: The esperanto.org site will be down over the June 8-9 weekend, since
the contents will be undergoing transfer to a new server.)

(3) ELNA is trying to ensure that its information for local groups is
up-to-date (some would seem to be years out of date). If you belong to a
local group and can let us know its current contact information, please
send it to donh@.... We'd like to have

    (a) a snail-mail contact address

Estimataj --

http://www.esperanto.org/ELNA2002/ ...).

La auxgusta numero aperos je la kutima dato.

---

This is to announce the one-month delay of the April and June issues of
Esperanto USA.

The April issue is late because I, as new editor, have had to get used to
the system. I apologize for this. The newsletter went to the printer ten
days ago, and has, one may hope, already been sent (or will soon be sent)
to you.

The June issue will be late on purpose, because I want to hold it back
until, at the end of June, I can include a report about the ELNA Congress
in Sacramento. (Have you already signed up??? If not, go to
http://www.esperanto.org/ELNA2002/ ...).

The August number will be out at the usual time.
