Someone has pointed out that in the case of the families I mentioned, in the
church registers the abode of the one family is given as Sandriggs, and the
other as Dufton, so that sorts them out.

Hi Jo,
I have just seen the picture you posted of T William Ellwood. This has given a
link to our tree. Over the past few weeks I have been trolling through the
Mundia program looking at who has been working on Ellwoods and trying to make
contact. The photo that you have just put up appears on three separate trees
posted by : Tantalus2002 / JanetEllwood / and JeanEllwood. The line is
something like this
William Ellwood 1870-1918 m Isabella Lambert 1872-1951
John Ellwood 1835-1906 m Mary Wilcoock 1837-1903
Mark Ellwood 1796-1868 m Mary Ellwood 1797
m Mary Jackson 1793-1867
William Ellwood 1772-1838 m Ann Simpson 1771(1776)-1842
Mark Ellwood 1734- m Ann Loadman 1736-
Mark Ellwood 1700 - 1739
or more probably 1685-1739 m Mary Maria Smith 1700-1772
Mark Ellwood1640-1739 (1725) m Isabella Greenwood 1640-1706
Christopher Ellwood 1598-1664m Bridget Dobson 1602-1662
Edmund Ellwood 1572-1657 m Elizabeth Howe 1575-
Edward Ellwood 1545-1591 m Ellyn 1545-1597
as you can see there is some difference of opinion as to some of the dates and
will need to have a bit more investigation and comparing of source documents,
but it is fairly consistent across the different trees posted (including others
which do not show that photo). Needless to say on the three trees mentioned
there are descendants of William, so it may be of great interest to you.

Val
Here's an answer, for now, to the question I posed a while back.

Hello again Steve,
I concur with Gillian re children of Thomas and Mary Loy. Three died in
infancy and don't know of any marriage/children for Robert or Sarah. For the
record Thomas married twice more after the death of Mary Loy; Mary Ellwood on
13/04/1783 (no issue) and of course, Elizabeth Willon 23/11/1784.
You are correct that I am descended from Ann Ellwood & Thomas Parker (they
were my grt, grt, grandparents) and, as I like to boast when I get a chance,
another stem (via their son Thomas) connects to the royal family.
With respect there is no evidence of a link to Thomas Ellwood & Elizabeth
Dobson, though the debate seems unending. I have a Thomas on my tree born
'about' 1670, but who his parents were and baptism date are not known,
because
there is a gap in the parish records for this period.
Regards
Stan

Hi Stan,
Thanks very much, that all makes perfect sense. We've only recently
discovered our connection to those families, and so are still trying to sort
out the links between them, and which kids belong to which families, so your
comments are very helpful.
Do you happen to know if any of Thomas and Mary Loy's kids went on to marry
and have children of their own?

Is there any kind soul out there who would be willing to send me a GEDCOM
file of the descendants of Thomas Ellwood, eldest son of Robert Ellwood and
Martha Saxon.
I know it is possible to find many of his descendants in various web sites,
but a Gedcom file would save an awful lot of typing!
Thomas Ellwood (181`7-1878) married
1. Elizabeth Benn
2. Elizabeth Wooldridge
and had children by both wives.

It worked on the second try, it's all hooked up now, and it lets us know that
you are my wife Val's fourth cousin once removed, the common ancestors being
Robert Ellwood and Martha Saxon.

Another Ellwood family research problem.
We've been looking at various people's online family trees, and we find that
there was a John Ellwood, born in Alston, Cumberland, in 1748, the son of
Thomas and Mary Ellwood (see family group sheets below for details).
Some people show him as married to Mary Gibson with seven children, including
a Gibson Ellwood, whose descendants settled in the USA.
Others show him as married to an Elizabeth Hogg in Great Salkeld, Cumberland.
with an entirely different set of children.
They can't both be right, so I wonder which it is.
Here are the family group sheets showing what we have:

With a whole lot more Ellwood ancestors, there also a lot more descendants
that we may be related to, and one of the things that we have discovered is
that a large number of online family trees have links to the wrong families,
with children who died in infancy being shown as having long lines of
descendants and so on.
John Ellwood (1748-?)
John Ellwood was born in Alston, Cumberland, in about 1748, the son of Thomas
and Mary Ellwood.
Some researchers show him as married to Mary Gibson born in 1748 in Moresby,
Cumberland, and having seven children, born in Whitehaven. At some point in
the late 18th century the family moved to Scotland, where some of the
children married, and some of them emigrated with their spouses to the USA.
Other researchers show this same John Ellwood as married to Elizabeth Hogg,
and having a completely different set of children. They can't both be right.
Eleanor Ellwood and Thomas Jaques (or Jacques)
In 1850 a Thomas Jaques (or Jacques) married an Eleanor Ellwood in
Whitehaven, Cumberland.
Quite a number of online trees show Eleanor (born 1829) as the daughter of
Robert Ellwood and Martha Saxton (or Saxon).
Now Robert Ellwood and Martha Saxon did indeed have a daughter Eleanor, but
she was born in 1822, not 1829, and she probably died young. The Eleanor
Ellwood who married Thomas Jaques in 1850 was probably born in 1829, but the
one who was born in 1829 was the daughter of William and Ann Ellwood, and not
the daughter of Robert and Martha.
We've looked at lots of online trees with Eleanor in them, in the hope that
some researcher has found the antecedents of William and Ann Ellwood, to see
if they link into the same Ellwood family somewhere, but so far we haven't
found any. Most of them have opted for the bogus link to Robert and Martha.
Incidentally, there was another Eleanor Ellwood, born in 1821, the daughter
of Thomas and Sarah Ellwood, who married Richard Herring in 1846 and had
descendants, but nobody seems to be interested in her, and she doesn't seem
to feature in anyone's online tree.

I've uploaded a file to the GEDCOM files section on the descendants of John
Ellwood, son of Robert Ellwood and Martha Saxon.
A while ago I asked if someone could send us a GEDCOM of the descendants of
John's elder brother Tom, and Genie Zappanti very kindly did so.
I tried to send the GEDCOM file of John's descendants to her, but it seems
that her mail reader insists on treating it as part of the message and
displaying it, rather than as an attached file. I'm not sure why that should
be, but since a Gedcom file is an Ascii file, it should be possible to save
such a message as a text file, trim off the extraneous materuial at the
beginning and the end, and import it from there. But I've uploaded it as
well, just in case.
We''ve just been getting it up to daye. We recently found that John Ellwood's
daughter Margaret married a Thomas Litster, and emigrated to Australia. We
have tried to make contact with the Australian descendants, but without
success, so we've added what we've been able to find from online sources.
Our brick wall at the moment is John Ellwood's wife, Bridget Anderson (also
born in Whitehaven in 1819). We know her father was John Anderson, but that's
it. We don't even know her mother's name.
We're also trting to follow up Robert Ellwood and Martha Saxon's other
children and their descendants. I believe that some of them also went to the
USA - does anyone else know more?

This is what I found out when I wrote my Aunt who has done much research into

Ellwood)
Andrew Thomas Ellwood, born January 28, 1898 in Newcombe, Elliott Co.,
Kentucky; died December 27, 1925 in Red Ash, Whitley Co., Kentucky. He was
the son of Samuel Wooldridge Ellwood and Rebecca B. Coburn. He married Hazel
Ellen Green March 13, 1918 in Campbell Co., Tennessee.
Hazel Ellen Green, born July 11, 1902 in Whitley Co., Kentucky; died June 13,
1972 in Louisville, Jefferson Co., Kentucky. She was the daughter of Homer
Gilmore Green and Lucy Abner.
Thomas Ellwood was killed at the age of 27. He was shot by his Father-in-
Law, Homer Green. According to news reports, Homer had been drinking ( home
brew ) and was trying to shoot his wife, Mae with a pistol. Tom and another
man disarmed Homer, but he got a shotgun, and shot Thomas through the heart.
Homer spent two years in the state penitentiary sentenced to hard labor. Tom
was originally buried in Proctor Hollow (property of Hugh Finley), KY. When
Hazel died in 1972, the remains of Thomas were moved to Jellico Cemetery .
Hazel is buried next to him.
Their children are:
i. Gladys Evelyne Ellwood, born February 11, 1919 in Red Ash, Whitley Co.,
Kentucky; married Hunter LePhiew Pinney December 03, 1943; born February 12,
1907.
ii. Howard Wellington Ellwood, born August 26, 1921 in Red Ash, Whitley Co.,
Kentucky; died October 25, 1944 in San Francisco, California; married Maureen
June Clemence April 01, 1944; born January 08, 1926; died May 21, 1989 in
Auckland, New Zealand.Howard Ellwood died in San Francisco while still

Jefferson Co., Kentucky.
iv. Dorothy Mae Ellwood, born November 26, 1925 in Red Ash, Whitley Co.,
Kentucky; died November 02, 1996 in Louisville, Jefferson Co., Kentucky;
married Frederick Taber June 05, 1949 in Louisville, Jefferson

"mercy killing" due to her advanced stage of Alzheimer's. Was tried for
murder but convicted of reckless homicide in September 1997. Was sentenced to

daughters support.
When Thomas Ellwood was killed his daughters were apparently sent to live
in an orphanage for a while.

A couple of days ago I discovered a connection between the Ellwood and
Rushton families.
Gillian McKenna left a message for me telling what she knew of the children
of Michael Ellwood (1770-1853) and his wife Mary Atkinson (1771-1872).
Most of their children died young, except for two - Mark Ellwood (1807-1849)
who married Jane Powley and lived in London. Their son Mark Ellwood went to
Canada.
The other surviving child of Michael and Mary was Anne Ellwood (b. 1801 in
Appleby, Westmorland) who married Thomas Rushton (1805-1850) in Appleby in
1826. Thomas was the son of Mark Rushton (1772-1851) and Mary Yarker (1772-
1836).
That reminded me that I had been at school with a Mark Rushton, though we had
lost contact since leaving school. One of the interesting things about this,
however, is that seems that this Mark Rushton and Mary Yarker may well have
been his ancestors, but more about that later.
Thomas Rushton and Anne Ellwood had at least seven children, most of whom
died young. But two survived: Ellwood Rushton and Yarker Rushton.
You'd think that with names like that they would be easy to find in the
various online indexes, but not a bit of it. The trouble is, I think, that
the transcribers and compilers of online indexes could not believe that
anyone could have a name like Yarker, so they wrote Yorker, Garker, Yasser,
Yanker and various other things.
Then I thought of my old schoolfellow and thought "what if I search for his
full name?" Perhaps he's become interested in family history and has it all
sorted. So I typed "Mark Morland Rushton" as a search argument, and, Lo and
Behold, there was a fairly full family tree. It wasn't his, but it did have
someone who could well have been his grandfather. It's at:
http://jo.warby.markingtime.bigpondhosting.com/p230.htm
I followed up some of those, and managed to find a few more children and
grandchildren, some full names and the names of some spouses, so if anyone is
interested in this part of the family, please let me know.
This branch are among the descendants of Mark Ellwood (born in Dufton in
1734) and married Ann Loadman of Brough under Stainmore. Is anyone else
interested in/researching that branch of the Ellwoods?

Hi Everyone,
I am new to the Ellwood group. I live in Montpellier, France.
I am researching Ellwoods from Westmorland. I can trace them back to Edward
Elwald from Dufton (see Bruce Morrison's site).
My ggg grandfather is John Ellwood b1807 Bongate, son of William Ellwood & Anne
Simpson.
John married in Kirkby Stephen to Margaret Parker in 1840. According to their
marriage cert, they were both previously married. I have found Margaret's 1st
marriage but have never been able to find John's 1st marriage.
On John's marriage cert of 1840 he was living Smaredale, a farmer.
Here is John's family:
John Ellwood- He was born 1807 in Bongate.
Baptism on 15 Feb 1807. He died on 02 Jan 1884 in Crosby Ravensworth.
Margaret Parker is the daughter of William Parker and Mary Nelson. She was born
1817 in
Warcop [7]. Baptism on 02 Dec 1817 in Warcop. She died on 03 Jul 1901.
John Ellwood and Margaret Parker. They were married on 16 Dec 1840 in Kirkby
Stephen. They had 8 children.
i. Mary Anne Ellwood. She was born 1842 in Smardale. Baptism on 14 Aug
1842 in Kirkby Stephen. She died on 24 Jul 1885 in Appleby.
ii. Isabella Ellwood. She was born 1844 in Crosby Ravensworth. Baptism on 19
Apr 1844 in Crosby Ravensworth. She died on 06 Jul 1912 in Crosby

Welcome! I hope we can help one another with our research, and the more the

I don't think i can help there, though I have been looking at that branch of
the family (descendants of Mark Ellwood and Anne Loadman) mainly because it
was interested in what had happened to the Michael's.

I have him with a daughter Margaret. He seems to have disappeared after she
was born in 1890 though.
My wife Val's ggg grandfather was Robert Ellwood who married Martha Saxon.
For a long time they were as far back as we could go, until we discovered the
link on Bruce Morrison's site.

Here is one of the families we are researching.
Thomas Ellwood and Hannah Lowery lived in the Whitehaven area. They had 13
children, but 12 of them have vanished without a trace. Only one, Robert,
seems to have married and left descendants (lots of them!)
We have found records of the baptism of the other 12, but nothing further --
no record of marriage or death.
Does anyone else know what happened to any of them?
Here they are?

Hello All,
I came accross this story about Ellwoods of Dufton from the archives of the
Cumberland & Westmorland Herald.
Enjoy!
Gillian
Cumberland & Westmorland Herald
Saturday, 21 August 2004
Recent contributions include a fascinating batch of typed manuscripts, dated
1953, all concerning the village of Dufton and, in particular, the Ellwood
family who once resided at Dufton Hall.
The Ellwoods were an old land-owning family who, as far back as 1653, bought a
property near the hall, known as Hall Gate, formerly owned by John Langhorn,
until he "went beyond the seas".
One of the articles is based on a diary kept by John Ellwood, who resided at
Dufton Hall during the mid-1800s.
John clearly relished good food in ample quantity, for he recorded having hosted
the Rev. John Richardson, headmaster of Appleby Grammar School, and treating him
to a most wonderful dinner.
According to the Ellwood diary for 25th November, 1860, "We had a roast goose
and a boiled round of beef and plum pudding and all sorts of fruit for desert.
We had bitter bottled beer and draught beer and sherry and port wine to drink at
dinner."
And that was not all, for "after dinner we had sherry, port and sweet wines and
brandy, whiskey, rum and gin".
It is not surprising that Mr. Richardson returned a week later, accompanied by
his son and, also, one of the Appleby Grammar School boarders. This time the
menu consisted of "roast sirloin of beef, boiled leg of mutton, plum pudding,
desert, beer and wines, as before".
Dinner-time details dominated the diary entries, for on Christmas day John
Ellwood and his guests sat down to a roast goose, roast sirloin of beef, plum
pudding and "all other requisites".
The articles, kindly sent by David Foster, Leyburn, North Yorkshire, are clearly
the work of the distinguished historian and journalist, C. Roy Hudleston, who
was editor of the Penrith Observer in the 1950s and enriched its pages with many
articles of local history. He later co-wrote the fine book, Cumberland Families
and Heraldry.

I did -- thanks very much.
He seems to have anticipated the concern with food that one sees in so many
blogs and TV programmes nowadays!

Thomas certainly seems to have been popular among the Ellwoods!
And I'm looking for the parents of another one.
He was born about 1803, some sources say in Brampton (which I understand is
near Appleby) and others say in Skelsmergh (which I understand is near
Kendal).
He married Isabella Dent in Morland in 1827, and they had four children.
Isabella died in about 1840.
Thomas then married Elizabeth Graham, the widow of Joseph Graham (maiden name
Burton), and they had three more children.
One online tree gives Thomas's parents as William Ellwood and Ann Simpson.
But Gillian has said that their Thomas (who was a year or two older) married
An Fawsett. I see a lot of other people have him married to Anne Townsend.
Looking at what's available on family search I think the most likely parents
for this Thomas are Edward and Abigail of the Kendal area.
Is anyone researching this family?
I got into it because I was looking for a Robert Ellwood, son of Robert
Ellwood and Martha Saxon, born about 1827. According to some people he
emigrated to the US, but if he did there doesn't seem to be much record of
it. But FamilySeach kept throwing up another Robert -- Robert Dent Ellwood,
son of Thomas and Isabella, born in 1831. So I got side-tracked into
following him up. His younger brother Richard emigrated to Canada in 1887,
but seems not to have liked it much, since he returned to Westmorland in
1891.
So I hope my sidetrack information is useful to someone!

Hi All
Have been reading all the posts and came across this one. I've now purchased the
marriage record of Thomas Jacques and Eleanor Ellwood in the hopes of clearing
up the mystery of my GGGG Grandparents ... I'm now waiting on it's delivery and
will post a copy of the certificate when it arrives.
I'm not looking forward to having to change all the Ellwoods in my tree .. but
for the sake of accuracy .. must be done.
Cheers
Greta
