Fire attack on West Bank mosque

A mosque in a village in the north of the Israeli-occupied West Bank has been damaged in an arson attack.

Attackers set fire to bookshelves and a large area of carpet in the mosque, and sprayed graffiti in Hebrew on a wall.

Palestinian residents of the village of Yasuf clashed with Israeli soldiers investigating the attack. Eyewitnesses say settlers were responsible.

Iran faces 'significant new sanctions', US warns

Iran faces "significant" new sanctions over its nuclear programme, according to US Defense Secretary Robert Gates.

And he reiterated that all options � including possible military action � should stay on the table.

Blackwater guards joined CIA raids: report

Guards from the Blackwater private security company took part in secret CIA raids in Iraq and Afghanistan, the New York Times reported Friday, citing former employees and intelligence officials.

Blackwater guards � notorious for abuses in Iraq, especially the killing of 17 civilians in Baghdad in September 2007 � participated in Central Intelligence Agency "snatch and grab" missions to capture or kill insurgents in Iraq and Afghanistan, according to the Times.

"It became a very brotherly relationship," an unnamed former top CIA officer told the newspaper. "There was a feeling that Blackwater eventually became an extension of the agency."

A spokesman for the North Carolina-based security firm, now renamed Xe Services, told the newspaper that it was never under contract to participate in clandestine raids.

Iran protesters stage new demonstrations

Iranian protesters defied police firing tear gas on Monday as they used an annual commemoration to stage fresh anti-government demonstrations despite a crackdown by security forces, witnesses said.

Clashes were reported between protesters, mainly university students seen as a backbone of the opposition movement, and police at several universities and prominent districts in the capital, which was flooded with security forces who arrested several demonstrators, they said.

Among those detained was student leader Majid Tavakoli from the prominent Amir Kabir university, the official IRNA news agency said, adding that he was "disguised as a woman" and was held for leading "riots" in the university.

New Iraqi election law approved

Iraq's parliament has unanimously approved a new electoral law, paving the way for elections early next year.

Parliamentarians were called to vote in a special late-night session to try to end a political crisis, and they voted minutes before the midnight deadline.

Dubai shares fall on fears over the emirate's debt load

U.S. wants allies' new troops in Afghanistan by mid-2010

The United States aims to get all new troops pledged by allies into Afghanistan in the first half of 2010 and wants the Netherlands and Canada to "stay with us" despite withdrawal plans, a Pentagon official said on Monday.

U.S. allies are pledging as many as 7,000 additional forces for the eight-year-old Afghan mission and deploying them quickly would accentuate the impact of U.S. President Barack Obama's surge of 30,000 U.S. troops.

Ex-UN nuclear chief critiques Egypt's democracy

The former chief of the U.N.'s nuclear agency critiqued Egypt's lack of democracy after reform-minded Egyptian youths urged him to come home and run for president.

In an open letter published in newspapers over the weekend, Mohamed ElBaradei said he would only consider the prospect if the country made sweeping democratic strides. The remarks by the Nobel Peace Prize winner triggered a wave of backlash in government media that sought to discredit him by calling him an American stooge.

The prospect that either President Hosni Mubarak � who has ruled for 28 years � or his son will run and win the 2011 election led Egypt's opposition parties and other activists to seek out and support anyone who might put up a fighting chance against the ruling party.

Damascus bus explosion kills three people

Three people, including a 13-year-old boy, have died in an explosion at a petrol station in the Syrian capital Damascus, officials say.

Syrian Interior Minister Said Sammour said the tyre of a bus had exploded as it was being pumped.

The bus is believed to have been carrying Iranian pilgrims visiting the Sayyida Zeinab shrine for Shia Muslims.

Iran to review ties with countries over IAEA vote

Iran's parliament said on Thursday it would review relations with countries that voted against Iran's nuclear activities at the International Atomic Energy Agency last week.

The IAEA board angered Iran last week by censuring it for covertly building a second uranium enrichment plant near the holy city of Qom, in addition to its main IAEA-monitored one at Natanz. It called for a halt to construction.

US commander eyes success in Afghan surge

The US commander in Afghanistan said Thursday a troop surge should start turning the tide of war by mid-2010 as Barack Obama's new strategy won reinforcements from Italy and backing from Russia.

As senior US officials said a time-line for troops to start leaving was not set in stone, General Stanley McChrystal said Obama's new war strategy would enable more troops to target Taliban strongholds.

Following Obama's announcement on Tuesday that he would send 30,000 more troops into combat, NATO foreign ministers gathered in Brussels to consider the US president's appeal for them to beef up the mission further.

West Bank settlers reject Netanyahu plea for support

Jewish settlers have rejected an attempt by the Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu to defuse tensions over a pause in building in the West Bank.

They vowed to continue a civil disobedience campaign stopping inspectors from entering settlements, now in its third day.

Speaking on Israeli radio, settlers described the meeting with PM as "difficult and emotionally charged".

The settlers have scheduled a mass demonstration next week in Jerusalem.

Skipper of UK-crewed yacht admits Iran waters `mistake'

The skipper of a British-crewed yacht detained by Iran has said they strayed into Iranian waters by "mistake".

Oliver Smith added the crew were blindfolded while at sea, apart from him as he was at the helm.

The crew were sailing from Bahrain to Dubai to take part in a race when they drifted into Iran's territorial waters.

Torture is systematic in Egypt `police state': rights groups

Egypt has become a police state where citizens receive no protection from torture, human rights groups said in a report published on Thursday.

"The basic feature of human rights in Egypt today is the prevalence of a policy of exception in which those responsible for violations usually escape punishment amid a climate of impunity intentionally created and fostered for several decades," said the report by 16 Egyptian human rights groups.

Netherlands reports mutant swine flu death

Dutch authorities said on Thursday a patient infected by a mutant strain of the swine flu virus had died.

Harald Wychgel, spokesman for the Dutch Institute for Health and the Environment, told AFP that there had been a "minor change in the virus to make it resistant to Tamiflu," a key treatment for influenza.

"The patient was already seriously ill and being treated for that. He was infected by the Mexican flu and developed a resistance to Tamiflu," Wychgel told AFP.

The Dutch ANP news agency said the man had died in hospital in the northern city of Groningen, adding that two more patients in the Netherlands had shown resistance to Tamiflu.

It is the fifth fatal case of mutated A(H1N1) flu in Europe, after two in France and two in Norway.

Ahmadinejad says UN sanctions on Iran will not work

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has said international sanctions against his country will not work.

In a TV interview, Mr Ahmadinejad also said that Russia had "made a mistake" in voting last week to condemn Tehran for building a second enrichment plant.

He added that Iran was not obliged to inform UN nuclear watchdog the IAEA of plans to build more nuclear sites.

Iran vows to deal `firmly' if yacht Britons found guilty

Iran said on Tuesday that five British sailors detained in southern Gulf waters by the elite Revolutionary Guards would be dealt with firmly if found guilty of what it called "ill intentions."

Egypt kills migrant trying to slip across Israel border

An African migrant has been shot and killed by Egyptian police as he tried to illegally cross into Israel, an Egyptian security official has said.

Border police said the man, described as in his twenties and of unknown sub-Saharan origin, ignored orders to stop.

At least 17 migrants have been killed at the Egypt-Israel border in 2009.

Human rights activists have previously criticized Egypt for the practice, but Egyptian police claim they are trying to control people trafficking.

Iraq shoe thrower Zaidi faces Paris shoe-ing

The Iraqi journalist who threw his shoes at former US President George W Bush has found himself on the receiving end of a shoe-throwing attack.

Muntadar al-Zaidi was speaking about Iraqi war victims at a news conference in Paris, but managed to duck in time.

Media reports said the attacker was an exiled Iraqi journalist who defended US policy and accused Zaidi of "working for dictatorship in Iraq".

After a brief scuffle in the audience, Zaidi quipped: "He stole my technique."

A U.S. warplane summoned by German troops fired on hijacked fuel trucks in Afghanistan before dawn Friday, killing as many as 90 people in an incident that could trigger a backlash against NATO.

NATO initially said it believed the casualties were all Taliban fighters, but later acknowledged that large numbers of wounded civilians were being treated in hospitals in the area.

Villagers said their relatives were siphoning fuel from the hijacked trucks and were burned alive in a giant fireball. Patients arrived in hospitals completely covered with burns.

Israel to approve hundreds of new settler homes

Israel will approve construction of West Bank settlement homes before it considers a freeze sought by Washington, a top government official said on Friday, sparking Palestinian outrage.

The plan is also certain to anger the US administration, which has pushed for a freeze of Jewish settlements in an effort to restart the stalled Middle East peace process.

"In the next days the prime minister will approve construction starts and then he might consider a freeze for a limited time under certain conditions," the official told AFP, asking not to be identified.
