OBJECTIVES:
The program is intended to strengthen the environmental research
capacity of institutions of higher education that receive limited
funding to build such capacity, including in particular institutions
with substantial minority enrollment. The program supports quality
environmental education for undergraduate students, thereby
encouraging them to pursue careers in environmentally related fields
and to continue their education beyond the baccalaureate level. This
goal is consistent with the sponsor's mission, which is to provide
leadership in the nation's environmental science, research, education,
assessment, restoration, and preservation efforts. This program will
benefit both the public and private sectors which will need a steady
stream of well-trained and diverse environmental specialists if our
society is to meet the environmental challenges of the future.

ELIGIBILITY
Applicants must be citizens of the United States or its territories
or possessions, or be lawfully admitted to the United States for
permanent residence. Students at schools that have substantial
minority enrollment are particularly encouraged to apply. Students
must be pursuing a bachelor's degree in an environmentally related
field of specialization. Students must have two academic years
remaining from the start of the Fall semester (Fall 2006), before
receiving a bachelor's degree. Students must have at least a "B"
average overall.

FUNDING
The fellowship provides up to $17,000 per year of academic support
and $7,500 for internship support for a combined total of up to
$41,500 over the life of the fellowship. During the nine-month
academic year, a $500 stipend will be paid to the fellow each month,
for a total annual stipend of $4,500. Stipends are paid directly to
the fellow. Each fellowship institution may choose to supplement a
Fellow's stipend from institutional funds in accordance with the
supplementation policy of the institution. Up to $10,000 per year
will be paid directly to the institution for allowable tuition and
fees. For the purposes of this fellowship, health insurance is not
considered to be an academic fee even if it is required by the
institution. Health insurance costs may, however, be paid from the
expense allowance. Up to $2,500 will be provided to pay for items and
activities for the direct benefit of the student's education, such as
for health insurance, books, supplies, equipment, and travel to
technical and scientific meetings. Specific instructions regarding
the disbursement and management of the expense allowance will be
provided during the award process. During the summer internship, the
fellow will receive a total of $7,500 for the three-month period.
This amount includes $1,000 for travel to and from the summer
internship site, $500 for travel while at the site, and a stipend of
$6,000 for living expenses. The term of undergraduate fellowship is
negotiated with the student and covers a period of nine months for
each fellowship year. Students seeking a bachelors degree may be
supported for a maximum of two years. Source: Grants.gov (08/03/05).

Hi Everyone,

This is an interesting short term outdoor volunteer opportunity at the Grand
Canyon National Park. Share it with anyone you think might be interested.

Thanks,

Dorothy Boone
Volunteer Coordinator
The Nature Conservancy in Arizona
1510 E Ft Lowell, Tucson, AZ 85719
(520) 547-3437

The Mission of The Nature Conservancy is to preserve the plants, animals,
and natural communities that represent the diversity of life on Earth by
protecting the lands and waters they need to survive.

Forest Vegetation Sampling
on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon

Dates: August 25 - September 3,
September 3 - September 12, or
August 25 - September 12

Volunteers needed to assist with a study of high-elevation forests on the
North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona!

The beautiful North Rim region of Grand Canyon National Park has some of the
best examples of old-growth coniferous forests in Arizona as well as the
entire Southwest. The core area of the North Rim is the Thompson Canyon
watershed, which has high-elevation spruce-fir and mixed conifer forests.
Forty study plots were sampled in this watershed in 1984, and some sites are
thought to have dramatically changed since then, even without fire. The
objective of the current project is to resample these plots in order to
better understand current forest communities of the North Rim.

Volunteers are needed to assist a small team of two National Park Service
staff members, including the person heading the research effort. Volunteers
will assist with measuring trees and recording data. Field days will be
Sunday through Friday, with Saturdays available for relaxing, hiking, and
other personal activities.

Transportation will be provided from Flagstaff, Arizona, or volunteers may
drive to the North Rim in their personal vehicles. A typical field day is
10 hours. Each day, the crew will drive as close as possible to the study
plots and then hike to the plots. Two to four plots will be sampled each
day. Total hiking distance generally will be 4 miles in a day; however, the
terrain is somewhat rugged, so volunteers must be in good health and good
physical condition.

Volunteers should plan to prepare their own meals, with stops for grocery
shopping arranged. Volunteers will be reimbursed for out of pocket expenses
at the rate of $15 per field day (no reimbursement on personal days).
Travel expenses for personal vehicles (to Flagstaff or the North Rim) cannot
be reimbursed. Cooking, showers, and laundry will be in a historic ranger
cabin; however, sleeping space is limited so volunteers must be prepared for
sleeping outside the cabin.

Volunteers must be able to:

. Enjoy working in old-growth forests (and a couple burnt-over forests as
well).
. Enjoy learning about the ecology of spruce-fir and mixed conifer forests.
. Follow simple directions in measuring and recording data on trees.
. Hike several miles off-trail in somewhat rugged terrain at 7000 to 9000
feet elevation - and repeat for six consecutive days.
. Provide all cooking, camping, and hiking gear, including appropriate
clothing and a sleeping bag suitable for night temperatures possibly dipping
into the 20's.
. Appreciate the beauty of the North Rim region.

Please help spread the word!
Hello,

NM has been honored with the first NAAEE Teacher Award.  This honor will travel with the conference to whatever state is the host, so this is a one time shot.  Since NM is the first to implement the Teacher Award, we have a very short timeline.  That said, we know that you have direct contact with teachers, do you know of one that should be nominated?

They Awards Committee at NAAEE has informed us that they have not yet received any nominations.  The deadline is Sept 5.  The nomination process is fairly simple, a list of the teacher's environmental education accomplishments and why you think they deserve the award, see attachment.  They do ask that the teacher know they are being nominated.

Please consider nominating someone, and definitely pass the word around.  If you know of someone that should be nominated but cannot get to the paperwork, please let Susan, Kevin Holladay or myself know and we will try to help.

Call for Nominations: NAAEE’s K-12 Teacher Award

The Awards Committee of the North American Association for Environmental Education announces the Call for Nominations for its newest award: K-12 Teacher of the Year Award. This award will be presented annually to an individual in the conference region who is recognized for their efforts in promoting environmental education and utilizing the environment as a context for learning in their teaching. You are hereby encouraged to consider nominating an outstanding New Mexico teacher before the September 5th deadline.

The person you nominate must have made a significant contribution to EE in one or more of the following ways:

* Has received clear recognition of her/his overall contributions among EE colleagues, and within their state EE Association.
* Has made visible contributions to the field EE (e.g. research, legislation, publications, etc.)
* More than 10 years of dedicated Service in the Field of EE
* Demonstrated innovation in incorporating EE into lesson plans.
* Demonstrated leadership in mentoring colleagues to use the environment as a context for learning.

To nominate someone, please provide order the following information using up to two pages:

Name of person being nominated (as you would like to see it on the award).
Title and address of nominee.
Award Category:

Accomplishments of nominee (see the above criteria)
When were accomplishments made?
Why, specifically, do you believe the accomplishments represent distinguished service?

Other relevant information.: Your name, mailing address, phone number, fax number, and e-mail address.

Please note: To ensure fairness, a particular teacher can only be nominated once. Contact the person you wish to nominate to ask if they have already been nominated.

The NAAEE’s Awards Committee will review nominations and make recommendations to the NAAEE Board of Directors. The K-12 Teacher of the Year Award will be presented on Friday, October 28th during the annual conference in Albuquerque.

Please submit applications for this award by Monday, September 5th, 2005 to:

Jennifer Visitacion, "jenv@...", (801) 328-1549

The NAAEE uses an electronic nomination process to radically reduce the environmental cost of the awards process. It also equalizes the competition by reducing the likelihood of judges being overly-impressed by glossy or weighty submissions.

Please send your nomination in an attachment, and indicate “K-12 teacher nomination” in the subject header. Do not send more than one attachment per nomination.

If you have any questions, contact either of the NAAEE Awards Committee co-chairs: Tim Grant at tim@... or (416) 960-1244, or Jennifer Tucker Visitacion, jenv@... or (801) 328-1549.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITY

What:
Advanced Project WILD Natural History Workshop

Rocky Mountain Elk, Trout & Forest Ecosystems

Treat yourself to a weekend of experiential learning in the beautiful Valle Vidal. This section of the Carson National Forest is known as the ‘Yellowstone of New Mexico’. All activities will demonstrate practical methods of integrating New Mexico Content Standards and Benchmarks in science, math and language arts into the classroom. Instructors from the Dept of Game and Fish will lead you through engaging and inquiry-based learning adventures centered on Rocky Mountain Elk, the Rio Grande cutthroat trout and their habitat!

This is an opportunity to camp out in crisp fall weather, network with other educators, enjoy the presence of one of the largest elk herds in the state and practice fly fishing. Timed to coincide with the peak of the rutting season, we will very likely see elk and hear bulls bugle, and try to learn to call bull elk. We will also learn about the successful reintroduction of our State Fish, the Rio Grande cutthroat.
When: Sept 23-25, 2005. Sept 23, start time 6:00 pm, Sept 24-all day field sessions, Sept 25, morning sessions end at noon. Where: Shuree Ponds,Valle Vidal Unit, Carson National Forest, east of Costilla, NM
ACCOMODATIONS:
Primitive camping. There will be potable water on site and use of a meeting space and bathroom. Small camper trailers/pop-ups OK.

GROUP SIZE
: Limited to 15! Workshop is open to educators and interested adults as space is available.

PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED
: Kevin W. Holladay, Project WILD Coordinator, New Mexico Department of Game and Fish, 505-476-8095 or kevin.holladay@...

COST:
Free! We will have a potluck dinner on Saturday night to get better acquainted. A $15 refundable deposit is required to hold your spot for the training.
Advanced Project WILD Natural History Workshops are a wonderful opportunity for K-12 educators and the general public to interact and learn from wildlife management professionals. Camping out in the field over a couple of nights and seeing how research is conducted allows for real inquiry-based learning to occur. Establishing a dialogue between teachers and biologists and land managers is a two-way street. Department staff learn a great deal about the challenges classroom teachers face every day. If you would like to be part of this dialogue and attend this workshop we would love to have you! Please contact Kevin Holladay at (505) 476-8095, kevin.holladay@...

scientific foundation for decision making at EPA since the program's
inception in 1995. EPA has awarded more than 1,000 fellowships to
students in almost every state and the District of Columbia.

Examples of project areas undertaken by previous fellows include
environmental engineering, environmental health sciences, toxicology,
and the ecology of aquatic and terrestrial systems. Fellows will receive
up to $37,000 per year, with masters degree candidates eligible for up
to two years of support and doctoral candidates for a total of three
years. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or be lawfully admitted to the
United States for permanent residence. Information on STAR fellowships
is available at: http://www.epa.gov/ncer/fellow Detailed application

Folks:

Announcing a class at the spectacular Mountain Studies Institute in Silverton, Colorado!

EXPLORE 21ST CENTURY MOUNTAIN ENVIRONMENTS, PEOPLE,
AND ISSUES USING GEOTECHNOLOGIES

INSTRUCTOR:          Joseph Kerski, PhD, Geographer, USGS

                       http://rockyweb.cr.usgs.gov/public/outreach/

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 22 (9 AM) TO SUNDAY, OCTOBER 23 (3:30 PM)

Geotechnologies have been named by the US Department of Labor as one of the three top fields for the 21st Century.  Complex issues such as population growth, tourism, wildfires, mining reclamation, water quality, water availability, and landslides require Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Global Positioning Systems (GPS) technologies and methods to help understand how these issues are distributed spatially across the landscape.  With these tools, students can investigate how climate, people, watersheds, climate, vegetation, soils, landforms, geology, and ecosystems interact by using computerized maps, satellite images, and three-dimensional models of the landscape.  Field data and latitude-longitude locations will be collected and investigated as part of this hands-on immersion in geotechnologies.

Students will use GPS receivers and laptops equipped with GIS computer software.

All,

Please send your feedback on the materials posted at the website below.

Background and details below available.

Thanks

Hello everyone --
I wanted to ask for your feedback on a draft poster we have developed
for the Federal Air Rules for Reservations (General Outdoor Burning
Rule). We are "heavily influenced" by Ecology's wonderful poster at (
http://www.ecy.wa.gov/pubs/0202004.pdf ) because the words can be easily
substituted for Spanish or native words and we wanted a visually
compelling image that would convey the basic meaning of both the rule
and also refer to the health effects of this kind of burning. (Please
let me know if we should formally seek permission to use the same
concept.) Also, we'd like to use the " You burn it, You breathe it" tag
line and I am not sure whose that is... and we probably should seek
permission there too.

Here is some background:
(1) The FARR
In June this year, Region 10's new Federal Air Rules for Indian
Reservation became effective on 39 Indian Reservations in ID, OR and WA.
One of these rules (General Outdoor Burning Rule) prohibits the outdoor
burning of a list of prohibited materials. These rules apply within the
"exterior boundary of Indian Reservations" and apply to both tribal and
non-tribal members and all land, regardless of legal status (fee or
trust land).

(2) Outreach Challenge
The outdoor burning rule represents an enormous outreach challenge for
Region 10 and the Tribes, many of whom are interested in helping us with
outreach on the reservations. There are over 200,000 people affected
by the rule, many of them have garbage pick up but a number have
significant solid waste challenges and little infrastructure. We have
formed an advisory group of tribal air staff, nontribal members who live
on Indian reservations, tribal outreach specialists, a toxicologist who
works closely with Tribes, engineers and others to help design
materials.
Our advisory group decided to reach out to two audiences at once: (1)
adults and teens and (2) middle school aged children.

We have some of the school age materials up on our worksite, but they
are very early drafts and are going to change significantly in look and
feel, so please keep that in mind.

We would like your input on the poster found at:

www.noopnoop.com/outdoorburning

We are seeking feedback on the image -- particularly ideas how to better
represent more difficult to indicate items like "asphalt / tar paper."

Questions:
* Is this a compelling image that would attract your attention?
* Do you have a sense immediately of what it means?
* Would you have a good sense of what materials should not be burned?
* Do you think this would reach a broad audience at the 6-8th grade
level?
* How can we improve our icons?
* How can we improve the poster overall?

We are also working on a companion brochure that will explain the rule
in more detail, including fires exempted from the rule (like
traditional/cultural burning).

Thanks for feedback on this! If we could get feedback by Sept 14th --
that would be great! Please feel free to circulate to others for
additional feedback!

Thanks!

Please circulate this submission information on the Young Naturalist
Awards at the American Museum of Natural History (see below and web site
at http://www.amnh.org/nationalcenter/youngnaturalistawards/).

Fall, 2005

Dear Educator,

The American Museum of Natural History invites you and your students to
participate in the 2006 Young Naturalist Awards. The Young Naturalist
Awards is a research-based essay contest for students in grades 7 - 12
to promote participation and communication in science.

Students who enter will conduct their own investigations on a topic in
the field of biology, Earth science or astronomy. They will plan their
own scientific expeditions during which they will identify questions,
collect data, make observations, and draw conclusions Students will
present their findings in narrative essays that combine the story of
their expeditions with sound facts, detailed observations and insightful
questions.

The essays will be judged by a panel of Museum scientists, docents,
environmentalists, and science teachers. All students who enter will
receive a personalized letter from the judges providing constructive
feedback that highlights the strong points of their research. Winners of
the contest (two from each grade) win cash scholarship awards, and an
expense-paid trip to New York City to meet Museum scientists and attend
an award ceremony. Their essays will published on the Museum Web site
and excerpted in /Natural History/ magazine.

New updates to our Web site provide strategies and tips that can be used
by teachers who want to integrate the Young Naturalist Awards into their
science curriculum or by teachers who run science clubs. Student
guidelines take them step-by-step through the research process. Complete
contest guidelines, entry information, and prize categories can be found
at: www.amnh.org/youngnaturalistawards
<http://www.amnh.org/youngnaturalistawards>.

We hope you and your students will take advantage of this opportunity to
explore the natural world around you. If you have any questions, please
contact Christine Economos, the YNA administrator at yna@...

>===== Original Message From cstl@... =====
Fall is a very busy time for educators. Everyone is back in school and
focusing on providing the best possible classroom experiences for students.
As a result, many classroom teachers and administrators are reluctant to
spend time away from their students. However, if you are considering making
any middle or high school curriculum materials decisions, the Middle
School/High School Science Curriculum Showcase will offer a valuable
learning opportunity for those educators involved in the selection process.

By participating in this showcase, you will have multiple opportunities to
experience inquiry-based, comprehensive science program materials as well as
participate in general sessions addressing an overall standards-based
science materials selection process. In the curriculum materials sessions,
facilitators are either classroom teachers actually using the materials or
the developers themselves. As a participant, you will engage in hands-on
learning about components of standards-based science curriculum materials,
explore instructional strategies that are designed into the programs to
enhance science learning for all students, and investigate how inquiry is
embedded into science content in these programs. The general sessions will
assist participants in determining for themselves where these materials
address the AZ Science Standard and introduce processes that school
districts can use to critically assess science curriculum materials to
select standards-based programs.

Please consider joining us for the Middle School/High School Science
Curriculum Showcase.

The Environmental Leadership Program seeks to transform public understanding
of
environmental issues by training and supporting a diverse network of
visionary, action-
oriented emerging leaders.

WHAT WE DO

The Environmental Leadership Program (ELP) nurtures a new generation of
environmental leadership characterized by diversity, innovation,
collaboration, and
effective communications. ELP addresses the needs of relatively new
environmental
activists and professionals by:

* Connecting them with peers through local and national networks;
* Providing training and other learning opportunities to develop their
leadership
capacity;
* Linking them with experienced environmental leaders through substantive
interactions and mentoring opportunities;
* Offering activity grants and technical support to help them implement
innovative
projects; and
* Focusing attention on the need for the environmental community to nurture
the next
generation of leaders.

THE ELP FELLOWSHIP

The centerpiece of ELP's work is the ELP Fellowship Program, which annually
selects
approximately twenty individuals with demonstrated talent and potential to
participate
in a two-year leadership development fellowship. The ELP Fellowship combines a
strong peer network and intensive skills training with opportunities for
mentoring,
project seed money, time for personal and professional reflection, and
technical
support. ELP Fellows have access to an internal Activity Fund that allows them
to
pursue capacity building projects to develop leadership skills and accomplish
tangible
results. Application materials for the ELP fellowship are available each year
beginning
in June with an application deadline of October 1st.

Native American Political Leadership Program (NAPLP)

Thanks to the generosity of the SBC Foundation, The George Washington
University’s Semester In Washington is proud to announce the creation of
its Native American Political Leadership Program (NAPLP). The purpose of
the NAPLP is to attract bright, energetic Native American college
students to Washington’s most respected political leadership semester
program.

The scholarship program gives qualified Native American undergraduates
the opportunity to spend a semester in the nation’s capital while taking
classes at GW, participating in hands-on internships and interacting
with political leaders and policy makers. The NAPLP includes a series of
seminars on Capitol Hill devoted to public policy issues affecting
Native American communities, and will play a key role in preparing the
next generation of Native American political leaders.

Beginning in January 2006, six qualified Native American students will
receive individual scholarships to cover tuition, fees, housing, books
and other expenses. As a participant in Semester In Washington, you will
be immersed in the American political process and will learn how public
policy decisions are made, how legislation is created, how our
government operates and how democratic policies function in a free
society.

You will learn key elements of political campaigns and governance such
as:
      Message development
      Media production
      Voter targeting
      Direct mail
      Fundraising
      Lobbying

Interested students who are enrolled members of a Native American tribe
may apply on-line or by downloading and mailing the application to SIW
Admissions, The George Washington University, 1922 F Street, NW, Room
404-A, Washington, DC 20052. For further information, call (202)994-8908
