At the national PTI, young adults 15-25 years old learn, challenge,
and teach each other about the philosophy and strategy of Nonviolent
social change. Living in community for a week to 10 days, 15-25
participants ground themselves in the history of social change,
theory, practice, and spiritual roots of Nonviolence, learn about the
connections between racism, militarism, poverty, sexism and hetero-
sexism, among other issues, build cross movement relationships with
both young and experienced activists and artists, and develop anti-
racist organizing skills within a personalized campaign for social
change. Basic PTIs are held on campus' and in communities around the
country and attract participants from many states and occasionally
various nations choosing to be empowered rather than just
disillusioned. They are coordinated and facilitated by FOR staff,
local organizers, artists, and collaborative partner facilitators.
All basic PTI participants are invited to attend the advanced PTI
training for trainers and work with the FOR to organize and
facilitate youth nonviolence trainings in their own community.

6. ABA Research Initiative on Women of Color

The American Bar Association is sponsoring a research initiative on
female lawyers of color. THIS IS THE FIRST RESEARCH OF ITS KIND!!!!
Although there have been numerous surveys on women in the legal
profession, none of these studies have done any more than footnote
information on women of color. In order for the research to be
statistically "valid," they need 7,000 participants. While this may
not seem like a large number, the Commission has not been able to get
lists from schools or minority bar associations due to privacy
concerns. Therefore, it is very much a grassroots effort to contact
as many women of color as possible to achieve this goal. To this end,
I am asking two things. One, please register to participate in the
survey. Your information will not be sold or traded to any other
organization, nor will any identifying information be used in the
survey. This is the link:
http://www.abanet.org/women/women_color_registration.html which you
can also use to get more information about the survey. Two, please
pass this on to all of the female attorneys of color that you know.
At the very least, this is the opportunity for us to express publicly
all of the issues with the legal community that we discuss privately.
Thank you for your help! Director of Development World Affairs

In one page or less tell me what you would do with $250 to benefit your

All,

I have tried answering that question for everyone a few times in the past
weeks. Today I was out in the sunshine (a little cold) working with
students on the GPS - having a great time (me and the students both).

The purpose of this message is to at least let you know what I WAS doing,
at least in picture form.

Last week was Alaska - doing an air quality training course. Pictures
from the course are located at

http://jan.ucc.nau.edu/~man5/pictures/120803%20AQ-AK/

The first two pictures might be of interest to ITEP staff - I caught
Virgil working!

Enjoy!

>>Dear Concerned Indian Educator,
>>
>>The NASA SHARP program is seeking academically talented rising juniors
>>and seniors for its Summer High School Apprenticeship Research Program
>>for 2004. I am asking your assistance to see that American Indian
>>students get equal access to this outstanding program.
>>
>>NASA SHARP is specifically designed to attract and increase
>>underrepresented students' participation and success rates in mathematics
>>and science courses as well as to encourage career paths that help build
>>a pool of underrepresented science and engineering professionals in the
>>workplace. NASA seeks diversity in all student support programs and all
>>eligible students are encouraged to apply. The NASA SHARP experience
>>provides high school students with an opportunity to develop and
>>strengthen their research techniques as well as their written and oral
>>communication skills, particularly in Science, Technology, Engineering,
>>Mathematics and Geography (STEM+G) fields. Top NASA, university, and
>>research professionals mentor qualified students selected to participate
>>in SHARP. NASA SHARP is comprised of two components; the Commuter and
>>the Residential. Students are paid an hourly stipend for the eight hours
>>a day, eight-week program.
>>
>>To become a participant in NASA SHARP, applicants must meet all of the
>>following requirements by the start of the Program in June:
>>
>>* Be a U.S. citizen or national* who will be at least 16 years old by
>>the time the program starts in June.
>>
>> * A "national of the United States" is a citizen of the United
>> States or a native resident of a possession of the United States. It
>> does NOT refer to a citizen of another country who is a U.S. permanent
>> resident. U.S. permanent residents are not eligible for the program,
>> unless they comply with the Child Citizen Act of 2000, Public Law 106-395.
>>
>>* Demonstrate a strong interest in and aptitude for a career in
>>science, mathematics, technology, engineering, or geography.
>>
>>* Complete at least two mathematics courses and two science courses
>>with an average grade of "B" or better in each course and an overall
>>average of "B" or better in all other coursework.
>>
>>* Speak and write English at a level that does not require significant
>>assistance.
>>
>>* Be willing to participate in a formal interview, if chosen as a
>>finalist, as part of the placement process.
>>
>>* Be available on a full-time basis (Monday through Friday, 40 hours
>>per week) for the entire duration of the Program.
>>
>>In addition, those who wish to participate in the Commuter Component of
>>NASA SHARP must permanently reside and attend a school within a
>>fifty-mile radius of a participating NASA Field Installation.
>>
>>Those who wish to participate in the Residential Component must be
>>willing to live on campus at the university selected by MTSI for the
>>entire duration of the Program. Transportation to and from the university

PHOENIX - Team registration is now underway for the second annual
Native American Basketball Invitational, a high school basketball
tournament sponsored by the Phoenix Suns comprised of Native

Canada.

In response to the overwhelming number of teams that have expressed
interested in participating in this year's tournament, event
organizers (POD Productions) have expanded the field to include 28
teams. To accommodate more teams, the first rounds of play July 21-
23 will be held on the Salt River Indian Reservation with the

came in the form of four college scholarships being awarded. This
was one of NABI's future goals, and to have it happen in our first
year tells us we need to keep the tournament growing."

12. 7th Annual New England Tribal Environmental Training
Conference, 02.16-19.04, Uncasville, CN

Dear Environmental Protection and Natural Resource Management
Partners:

On behalf of the federally recognized Indian Tribes in New England,
we would like to invite you to the 7th Annual New England Tribal
Environmental
Training Conference. The conference will be held at the Mohegan Sun
Casino and Conference Center in Uncasville Connecticut February 16-
19, 2003.
The Mohegan Tribe and the Wampanoag (Aquinnah) Tribe will be co
hosting this year's conference.

The theme for this year's conference is "A Respect for the Earth,
Sun and Sky through Pollution Prevention".

This year we have included the following topics for the Training
session;
- A New England Tribal Environmental Legal Affairs Summit
- A "Green" Technology Products Exposition/Demonstration
- Tribal Pollution Prevention Strategic Planning Session
- Mohegan Tribe Hydrogen Generator Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

The goal of conducting these activities will be to provide an
opportunity for Tribal decision makers, environmental program
directors and Tribal legal staff to become knowledgeable with regard
to pollution prevention opportunities at each reservation and to
formulate a comprehensive yet unified intertribal approach for the
purpose of improving the quality of our Tribal environments.

Ultimately, the goal of the discussions will be to encourage Tribal
governments to partner with fellow tribes and take advantage of
sustainable innovations to further support Tribal self-governance in
environmental protection, regulation and enforcement. These concepts
will assist the Tribe's of New England to sustain Tribal resources,
Tribal health and
culture for the next seven generations.

In keeping with the "green nature" of our conference and to reduce
the environmental impact of our conference, we will be following the
principles
of "green conferencing." Accordingly, we will be utilizing the
Internet and e-mail to the greatest extent possible for distribution
of conference
notices, conference registration, and links to electronic
information associated with conference discussion topics. All of
this information
is available at:
www.netetc.vineyard.net

In light of the current budget constraints facing many
organizations, we have decided to eliminate conference registration
fees for all tribal
participants.

The Mohegan Tribe will also provide a free Traditional Feast on the
evening of February 18 with cultural presentations to entertain us.
Breaks with coffee/ snacks will be provided twice each day during
the conference sessions. Lunches will not be provided, however there
are over 29 restaurants conveniently located within the conference
center. For your further convenience, at the attached website is a

Brown Bag Presentation Series

From Americanization to Self-Determination: the Federal Relocation
Program and American Indian Experience in Los Angeles, 1954-1972

Nicolas G. Rosenthal
Ph.D. Candidate, Department of History, UCLA
Pre-Doctoral Fellow, Institute of American Cultures and American
Indian Studies Center, UCLA

UCLA
12 o'clock Noon to 2:00 p.m.
Monday, February 23, 2004
3232 Campbell Hall

Between 1948 and 1978, the Bureau of Indian Affairs moved about
155,000 American Indians from Indian reservations to U.S. cities.
From its inception, this relocation program attempted to break
ties to reservations, promote nuclear families, and integrate
American Indians into the low-wage work force. In response, Indian
people adopted a variety of strategies, culminating with their
eventual participation in the planning and implementation of
relocation policy. This talk will chart the relocation program's
shift from Americanization to self-determination in Los Angeles,
arguing that this was representative of wider changes in federal
Indian policy. Furthermore, it will suggest that the history of
relocation in Los Angeles can contribute to current critical
conversations about the relationships between Indian people and the
federal government.

Dear folks at the Arizona Association for Environmental Education,

Could you please share information about our Center's Teacher Fellowships for
the Andes and the Amazon Field School in Ecuador for Summer 2004 with your
members? Our program which includes rainforest education and an analysis of how
indigenous peoples interact with their environment versus nonindigenous
peoples may be of interest to your memebership.

Your assistance in getting the word out about this opportunity would be
greatly appreciated. Thank you!

-Stefanie

Dear Mansel -

I got your name from Jacob Fillion, Environmental Education Branch Chief at
Grand Canyon National Park. I wanted to ask your help in circulating a
position announcement for a new internship program at the park, sponsored by
the Grand Canyon National Park Foundation. It's called the "Native American
Boatmen Internship Program" and was recently established to offer
opportunities for Native Americans (men and women) to explore careers as
boatmen within the National Park Service and/or for private river running
companies.

While I know you handle Environmental Education Outreach at NAU, we thought
perhaps you and your colleagues might know students or other individuals who
would be suitable candidates for the internship. The deadline to apply is
February 25. Attached is the full position announcement with details on how
to apply. We also have the information posted on our website at
www.gcnpf.org/nabi.html.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to email or give us a call.

Thanks for your help!
