The 2009 Montgomery & Associates Summer Writing Internship at the WRRC

The University of Arizona’s Water Resources Research Center is offering a summer internship to a student interested in gaining experience writing about environmental and water issues.  The internship is supported by Montgomery & Associates, an Arizona-based consulting firm specializing in hydrology and water resource issues. The selected intern will contribute to research and writing of an issue of Arroyo, the annual WRRC publication that focuses on a critical Arizona water issue.

Enrolled students in good standing at the University of Arizona, Arizona State University, and Northern Arizona University are eligible. The intern will work 20-25 hours per week during June and July, at a rate of $10.00 to $14.00 per hour depending on experience.

The intern will work at the WRRC offices in Tucson.  The successful applicant will be responsible for his/her own accommodations.

To Apply:

Complete an application form available at our website: http://cals.arizona.edu/azwater under the WRRC News heading and send the completed form, along with a writing sample and a letter of recommendation, to Susanna Eden at seden@... .

The 500-1,000 word writing sample may be on any topic; however, it should not be a technical report.  The writing sample should avoid jargon and be understandable by general readers.

The letter of recommendation should come from a faculty member familiar with applicant’s writing.

More information can be found in the FAQ Answers on the WRRC website http://cals.arizona.edu/azwater . Follow the WRRC News link.

Applications are due no later than 5:00 p.m., Friday, April 17.   The selected candidate will be notified by April 30.

Please direct any questions to seden@...

man

Just wanted to let teachers and students interested in environmental research know about a relatively new program designed to get students involved in riparian studies throughout the state of Arizona this summer.

DIVE INTO ARIZONA RIVERS: THE HS RIPARIAN RESEARCH EXPERIENCE

For the second summer, Arizona Rivers will be conducting a two-week High School Summer Riparian Research Experience (RRE) for a select group of incoming sophomore, junior and senior high school students along with a 3-day Arizona Rivers Workshop for teachers beginning June 5th.  This year we will be headquartering at the Southwestern Academy in Rimrock, AZ, along the banks of Wet Beaver Creek.  This unique program combines a 3-day training for students and teachers on the techniques and methods involved in riparian monitoring, restoration and research followed by a 12-day field experience for the students traveling to more than a dozen riparian areas throughout the state of Arizona – from the headwaters of the Verde River to the Upper San Pedro.  Additional sites include Oak Creek Canyon, Montezuma’s Well, Tonto & Fossil Creeks, the San Francisco/Gila River system and Aravaipa Creek.  While we’ll be staying in student dorms while at Southwestern Academy, most of the time in the field with the students during the RRE will be spent camping!  As a wrap-up to the field experience, students will return to Southwest Academy to develop (along with a research mentor) a year-long research project dealing with the ecology and/or hydrology of a riparian area in their own community.  Application materials and additional information can be found at www.azrivers.org.

cheers,

John Madden

Here is a proposal and cost estimate for Summer Scholars 2009. We are
still working on updating costs and planning, so consider this a DRAFT.

We will try to keep the costs to less than $300 per student for the
school or tribe cost share.

If you are interested, let us know.

Vacancy

There are two vacancies that have just been posted yesterday afternoon for
two GS-9/11 Interpretive Specialists on USA JOBS. One announcement is open
to all sources (the general public) and the other is open to all government
employees as merit promotion. The two announcements are for two positions,
but one is open to all sources and the other is merit promotion.

I wanted to ask you to spread the word with any of your contacts about
these two interpretive specialist positions in the Intermountain region.
One is in salt lake city and the other in Santa Fe. Both are GS-9/11s and
will be working in the long distance national historic trails offices.

The work involves interpretive media planning and production. In SLC there
are four long distance trails covering 13 states from Missouri and Illinois
to the Pacific Ocean. The Santa Fe position includes five long distance
trails from southern California to Georgia.

Both the announcements (government-wide and all sources) can be found on
USAJOBS:

Vacancy Ann.#: OZ246952 ml
Who May Apply: Public
Pay Plan: GS-0025-09/11
Appointment Term: Permanent
Job Status: Full-Time
Opening Date: 3/23/2009

Vacancy Ann.#: OZ247517 ml
Who May Apply: Status Candidates
Pay Plan: GS-0025-09/11
Appointment Term: Permanent
Job Status: Full-Time
Opening Date: 3/23/2009

The work is challenging and often intense due to the heavy demand from
partner organizations for interpretive media and site development - other
federal agencies, state agencies, county, city, and local organizations as
well as private tail associations and partner organizations.

Let me know if any of your contacts might be interested. they can talk with
either myself in SLC or Sharon Brown in Santa Fe.

thanks,

Opportunity for summer work near Santa Fe, NM:

The watershed job will consist mainly of bird counts, nest monitoring, and veg
surveys. The main thing I'm concerned about is hiking ability. I want someone
who can move quickly in the mountains without any trails. All the bird counts
have to be done by 10 AM, so the faster we can move, the later we get to sleep.
The only other thing that's really important is the ability to learn a bunch of
bird calls - about a hundred. It's a little daunting at first for everyone, but
sharp ES students should be able to manage fairly quickly. I'll send out a CD
to listen to before the season starts. Experience with birds would be great,
but is certainly not necessary. Also, there will only be three people for the
summer, so someone that is easy to hang out with is kind of a must. We'll be
spending lots of time together. The job should start sometime around the 11th
of May, but that could be changed if school is still going.

That should be about it for the work. The job is great. The Santa Fe watershed
is beautiful and closed to the public, so we will just be walking around alone
in the woods listening to birds all summer. Plus, Santa Fe isn't such a bad
place to hang out. The whole area is really nice and it has a great brewery.
We will probably be camping for the duration, but renting a place isn't out of
the question. We would be paying for it though - a campsite is the best housing
that could be arranged through the forest service. I'm still not sure what the
pay would be, but around $10/ hr is my best guess for undergrads.

Anyone who's interested or who has any questions can drop me an email
(jcploss@...<mailto:jcploss@...>) or, since time is so pressing,
give me a call at 575-312-3359. The official deadline for this is this Monday,
but we might be able to push it back a little bit. The sooner the better
though.

Thanks,
Jason Ploss
