I have written to him accordingly.
Anyone wishing to send an administrative message should send
it to either
Kevin Brook: kbrook@...
or
Bryan Dobbs: bgdobbs@...
or
eejh-owner@onelist.com
Please DO NOT send such messages to eejh@onelist.com or they
will be received by all 450 subscribers.
Kevin and I have dealt with all administrivia raised during
the past few days and I now hope that postings to the list
will solely be on topic.
In case you missed them in the flurry of incidentals, there
have been interesting postings on Poland, standards of
transliterated Yiddish and a
Yiddish concert.
Let us hope that with regard to the unnecessary messages,
the Yiddish saying applies: "'Ibergekumeneh' tsores iz gut

BPS acted in a most unfriendly way to the whole list in repeating all the
messages he claims to be complaining about, and thus purposely made much
more of nuisance of himself than all those poor people who made mistakes.
We can do without such petulance.

For some reason I am getting mysterious e-mail messages from other
subscribers which appear to be intended for the moderator/host of this
group. Could you please check what's happening, and sort out?
Thanks,
Charlie
If you cannot fix your flooding of my connection with every trivial

The .EXE file was in the body of the message, not as an attachment, which is
why is did not get stripped out. The way I received it, I probably could not
have run it even if I had tried.

Regarding Jonathan Rigbi's message, which contained an .EXE attachment.
ONELIST had a question when I set up EEJH. It read:
"Attachments are images, programs or other files that are sent through
email. ONElist provides the ability to automatically strip attachments
from emails. Do you want to allow attachments on your list"
I specifically saved the setting as "No". So it is strange that the
filter did NOT work in the manner described. I will forward this email to
the ONElist staff.

HOW TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM EEJH
To unsubscribe from this list, go to the ONElist web site, at
www.onelist.com, and select the User Center link from the menu bar
on the left. This menu will also let you change your subscription
between digest and normal mode. If you have difficulty in
unsubscribing, write to kbrook@...

For everyone having trouble getting used to using the
new eejh list processor (onelist), that's
understandable. Suddenly the system changed. What
worked before will not work now. But don't get
frustrated and grumpy. This system is a bit better, a
bit easier to use, and I think you'll enjoy it once
you get used to it.
If you do not have web access (something like Netscape
or Internet Exlorer), or if you do have web access but
you're a bit clueless about web browsing, skip to
Section B.
===============================
Section A - Web Interface
===============================
If you have web access, you can use a simple web
interface to subscribe, unsubscribe, view archives,
join other mailing lists, etc. (You can, for example,
choose to subscribe to a list but receive no mail from
it. To read the list messages, you would instead
browse them through the web page listed below, and
your mailbox would never fill up with list messages.)
1. Go to http://www.onelist.com/
2. Bookmark the site so you can easily find it
tomorrow.
3. Type or paste your full e-mail address (something
like you@...) into the "Email address" box.
4. If you know your password, type it into the
"Password" box. If you don't know your password, just
type any old crap into the "Password" box.
5. Click the "Log-in" button.
6. If you know your password and you entered it
correctly, you will now be able to click "eejh" and
manage your account.
If you do not know you password and you typed some
garbage in the password box, the computer will offer
to e-mail you the correct password. Agree to that. In
a minute or two, check your e-mail inbox for a message
from onelist that will tell you what your password is,
and then go back to step 1 armed with the right
password. Simple.
===============================
Section B - Email Commands
===============================
If none of the above makes sense to you, or if you
don't have web access, don't just send your requests
to the list address. That forces the system to send
out about 450 copies of your message, one to each
subscriber--"Oh, look! Another guy wants to
unsubscribe and doesn't know how!"--and gets nothing
done because that's not how to send a command to the
list processor.
Instead, to change your eejh account without web
access, send e-mail to one of these addresses:
To remove your address from a list, send any garbage
mail to:
eejh-unsubscribe@onelist.com
It is the TO address (eejh-unsubscribe) and the FROM
address (your address) that determine what happens;
the subject and contents of your message mean nothing
to the program receiving your mail, so you can just
leave them blank or fill them with dirty words or
whatever crosses your unsubscribing mind.
Other mailable commands:
Send empty mail to:
eejh-digest@onelist.com
to switch your subscription to digest mode.
Send empty mail to:
eejh-normal@onelist.com
to switch your subscription back to normal mode.
Send empty mail to:
eejh-subscribe@onelist.com
to subscribe again after you come came from Bermuda.
===============================
Section C - Real People
===============================
And if none of that makes sense either--and, frankly,
if that's the case, I'm surprised you got this
far--but as I was saying, if none of that makes sense
to you, just send your requests in plain English
(because a real person will be reading your mail) to
the list owner:
eejh-owner@onelist.com
In this case, you could unsubscribe by writing (to
eejh-owner@onelist.com) something like "Dear Kevin and
Brian, I hope your families are well... by the way, I
hate to be a bother, but could you remove me from the
eejh list? It's not that I don't like your nice list,
but we're going away for the summer and..."
===============================
Section D - Hundreds of People
===============================
And of course there's one more address:
eejh@onelist.com
Use it when you've got something interesting to say
about Jewish history and culture in the lands of
eastern Europe. According to the web site, there are
about 450 subscribers, so every time you send mail to
that address, a computer program intercepts your
message, makes about 450 copies of it, and sends one
copy to each person on the list.
===============================
===============================
How to remember all this?
If you are using the web interface, just bookmark the
page I told you about in section A. The page has its
own help system, so you can always get help there.
If you are using email, copy all of the above email
addresses into your email address book so you won't
have to remember them. Don't write them down; this is
the computer age, kid!

Steps are being taken to correct the problems Ed Smits
identified.
The EEJH list at onelist.com is the same list as EEJH at
ort.org.
When ORT put an end to list activity, the list owner of EEJH
[and many other list owners as well] simply changed the
email server. This meant in effect creating a "new" list
and so existing members of the ort.org list were sent a
notification that they had been added to the onelist.com
list.
Because EEJH has been quiet for a few months, the change
notices sparked a flurry of "subscribe", "unsubscribe" and
"subscribe to additional lists" activity.
The owner of the list informs me that this kind of activity
occurs in spurts and has not been uncommon since the start
of the list in 1994 though the bursts of such activity are
infrequent. It is caused by a general unfamiliarity with
email list etiquette and protocols.
PLEASE take a moment to review the message you were sent
entitled :[eejh} Welcome to eejh@onelist.com. All of the
procedures are clearly outlined.
If you have questions, do not send them to the list but
instead to either Kevin Brooks or myself.
He is an extremely experienced list moderator. I'm new at
this and learning.
A long time ago I signed up to a low volume mailing list about Eastern
European Jewry. Off and on the list was informative, lately I had received
so little traffic from the list that I thought it had died and forgot about
it. I went away for a few days recently and came back to a flood of email
from something called eejh that I don't recognize. The messages are
requests to sign-off and other users telling them not to sign off through
the list, virus's and multiple virus warning messages etc. No information
about European Jews that I can see.
I didn't ask to join this new list. I assume that the recipient list from
the old list was folded in to the new one (an automatic subscription if you
will), and since I wasn't around to agree to the new subscription it "took"
without any input from me. Most responsible mailing list administrators ask
for a confirmation message to be relayed back to them, usually within 24
hours, before confirming the subscription. Had this happened in this case I
would have been spared this mess, and I assume that a lot of other users
who are trying to signoff would also have been spared. A competent list
administrator is the most important part of any list.
Cheers
Ed Smits
I have reported the spam message containing only the
Happy99.exe virus sent to all members of this list to the
abuse section of the internet service provider of the
possibly unwitting perpetrator.
Do NOT open this file.
If you have done so and are running an up to the minute
update of either Norton Antivirus or McAfee Virus Scan
[monthly updates not system upgrades] the virus program will
be located for you with a dialogue box for appropriate
action.
Otherwise, www.download.com should have a file named Happy
99 Cleaner.
Until the virus is removed do NOT send an email out as the
virus will automatically attach itself to the email and will
at the same time send itself to everyone in your address
book.
Thanks to Malcolm Davidson for his alertness.
See:
http://dir.yahoo.com/Computers_and_Internet/Security_and_Encryption/Viruses/Spec\
ific_Viruses/Happy99/
for a list of web sites describing that damned virus
and how to get rid of it.
One thing to remember: if you didn't run it, you are
safe and you don't have to do anything. Just delete
it, dlete the message that delivered it, and forget
it.
But Jonathan Rigbi has some PC detective work to do...

and it's no good sending an unsubscribe message to the list - it
doesn't work that way - send it to the list manager as detailed
in previous messages fromm eejh very recently.

Dear Ruth:
I have asked Kevin to configure the list so that messages
will be forwarded to one of us and then posted only by one
of us. This may take a few days. It's easier than
expecting some of the list members to be able to walk a
straight line from A to B.
Best wishes.
Bryan.

THANKS, Stefan!!! I tried to achieve the same thing but obviously didn't
succeed!
To subscribe and unsubscribe, PLEASE DO NOT SEND MESSAGES TO THE LIST!!!!!
I'm sending this to the list so everyone gets the message. PLEASE learn basic
listserv etiquette.

Hi,
I was just wondering if there were any conventions on
transliterating Hebrew. I am an Ashkenazi, but was taught Sephardic
pronounciation (i.e. "bat" instead of "bas" for daughter of).
Is either one preferred on this list?
