Since you have it scanned as a PDF your best bet is to convert via OCR
to a Word document, fix the issues that arise (i.e. paragraph returns
at the end of each line, letters not being interpreted properly, for
instance "la" might end up as "h" and so on). If the text is in a
serif vs. san-serif it will come across a lot better. Also, if the
resolution of the scan is at least 300 dpi that helps too. One thing
to try is to copy the pages at about 150% then scan that in and it
should give you about a 98% positive hit rate.

Once you have cleaned up the text the rest is fairly easy and not much
more than a formatting exercise to get it to look the way you want.
I've done this for a couple dozen clients when we don't have the
original manuscript. It's time intensive but not difficult.

If you haven't yet merged your Fictionwise and Barnes & Noble bookshelves,
you may not want to, at least not if you own a nook "1st edition" (the
first nook model).

Apparently, if you have too many books on your BN shelf, whether or not the
books have been archived, you can no longer sync your nook 1e with your BN
shelf. The sync process times out after a certain number of titles. At
least, that's the reason identified by other nook 1e owners who can no
longer sync. To solve the problem, you have to delete titles until the sync
starts working again.

Newer nooks don't have the same problem, I've heard.

I am working on my first e-book--which is a book of quotations--and I was
wondering if it is acceptable to leave widows in fixed layout e-books. I would
not do it in a print book, but I've seen several e-books that have left widows.
Is that standard e-book industry practice?

It depends on your comfort level. In most formats, it won't matter anyway,
because reflow will change what you do. In PDF, it does matter, which is why
I often have one base file for PDF and a second for other formats. I'd say
there is about a 40/60 split between publishers who don't leave them vs.
those who do, based on personal experience. Personally, I will leave widows
in paragraphs of text, but with quotes, I don't leave widows, if the widow
will be the attribution to a quote on the page before. In fact, I hand set
to avoid a PDF break of quote with attribution on purpose when pages of a
book I'm working on are quotes (blurb quotes or whatever). But as I said,
PDF is your only concern for that. Nothing else is a stable format anyway,
so let it ride, IMO.

Ebook readers come in many different formats; from as small as a smartphone
screen to as large as an ipad. Unlike dead tree publishing ebooks have to
deal with different screen sizes and different font sizes. It would be
impossible to format an ebook which would take this into consideration. You
would have to sell ebooks specifically formatted for every different kind of
device and every different kind of reader software. It is much simpler to
allow such things as widows and orphans and then you only have to worry
about reader software for every different operating system.

Widows and orphans in ebooks are often more a matter of the
reflowing of text and where the lines fall, especially in
systems that allow the person reading the book to change
the default font size. Most ebook software, regardless of
the hardware that it's running on, doesn't try to suppress
widows or orhans by default (if it can do so at all).

If your target is ePub or some other HTML-based format that
supports CSS, you might try adding

   page-break-inside: avoid;

to the CSS for the relevant elements (paragraphs or whatever
you're using to enclose each quotation).

One "hack" that I have used for a series of short sections
of text (let's say, quotations) is to put each quotation
into a one-row table, one table per quotation. Many ebook
programs will try to display the entire table on the same
page, thus avoiding, or at least reducing the number of,
widows and orphans.

If you were using <p> elements, change <p> to

   <table border='0'><tr><td>

and change </p> to

   </td></tr></table>

You might be able to "get away" with one quotation per
table row, since many rendering programs will also try to
keep all of the contents of a table row on the same page.
Again, it depends on the ebook programs. If you take this
approach, be sure to not have any super-long tables since
many rendering programs will get "sluggish" with very long
tables.

Or not. Since I base the TOC in my ePubs to correspond to page and section
breaks, this would be counterproductive to my aims. But as I said, I usually
ignore widows and orphans in this type of ebook and only address it in PDF.
It's never steered me wrong before.

ePubEditor (https://sourceforge.net/projects/epubeditor/).

I like it because:

1. ePub is the linqua franca of e-books, and I feel no need to cater to
any other format.

2. It wraps all the tools I use to edit the component parts of an ePub:
Microsoft's Visual Web Developer (free edition) for HTML, TextPad for
CSS, IrfranView for images. Plus, it allows me to change the tools to
anything else I want, whenever I want.

3. It allows me to alter HTML elements and their attributes without
affecting the child elements of those elements. It also allows me to
delete an element without deleting the child elements.

4. It allows me to run XSLT transformations on HTML files based on the
publisher attribute, which I use to clean up the truly clueless and
abominable markup used by most major publishers.

5. I wrote it, so if it doesn't do something I want it to I just
re-write it so it does.

6. It can interface to the IDPF's epubchecker, although IDPF keeps
changing the epubchecker interface, so that functionality is currently
broken. Maybe someday I'll fix it when it becomes important enough to
rise above other requested features and bug fixes.

I'm new to this group but not to writing. Started late but have been writing
for five years. If I live long enough I hope to become the Grandpa Moses of
