Protecting our Youth from military
recruitment!
Only a small victory in a long and
continuing battle, but the Spirit of activism is alive! last
night Eureka joined Arcata in supporting appeal of lower court
denials of our rights to protect our youth locally from military
recruiters. Arcata and Eureka are Humbold's largest
cities.
Both cities approved identical ballot initiatives
known as Measure F in Arcata and Measure J in Eureka on the November
4, 2008 ballot. The cases now go before the 9th Circuit Court of
Appeals.
Many thanks to all those who have
worked for the past 20 months to give our communities this chance;
organizing and campaigning, collecting thousands of signatures to get
these measures on the ballot. Both cities approved identical ballot

Eureka voters approved the initiatives. Thanks, also, to the
great number of people who called, emailed and spoke to the City
Councils urging them to recognize our deep concerns about the
practices used in recruiting our youth and the legitimacy of our right
to follow through with an appeal of our democratically won
election.

** We encourage other parts of the country to
consider their own processes toward similar objectives. This has been
our local way for coming to grips with endless dependence on the
ultimatums of militarism, the resulting tragedies rather than
determined effort to follow through with legitimate diplomacy based on
great good will.
