You have to think that CD drives most of the time are used to read data
instead of musical CDs.
Cache is very useful to avoid continuous access to same sectors, that is
very common during data reading.
Drives that cache data are more and more lifelonger compared to ones who
don't.
This is because I STRONGLY recommend NOT to buy drives without data
caching. The only case should be a burner NEVER used for reading.
Ase you already now, caching is a problem when EAC reads in secure mode,
because of false matching response from cache instead of disk surface.
Simply disabling cache IN EAC following Zoltan correct advice solves any
problem.

Zoltan,

Many thanks. I was told to disable disk caching before but didn't even

Hi Conrad,

it's correct: disable caching.

EAC->Drive settings->Read mode->Drive uses caching: check it.

We are not talking about data caching. We’re talking about audio caching,
which is something that you do not want a drive to do. (Do you know of any
drives which lack data caching?)

There is no way to “disable caching” in EAC. All that you can do is inform
EAC that the drive caches audio data, in which case EAC will attempt to read
a large enough amount of data that the drive’s cache no longer contains the
data when EAC goes back to do a re-read. That can result in far slower
ripping times for audio CDs and more wear and tear on the drive. If you can
find a drive that does not cache audio data, buy it.

Given the plummeting cost of RAM, it’s not inconceivable that a company
could produce a high-end drive which cached the entire audio CD in RAM, in
which case, EAC would be unable to function properly.

  Regards,

   Fred Maxwell

I bought a new PC with Vista French version pre-installed this week &
had the same problem for writing.
Your tip on unchecking "use CDRDAO..." is fine for me.
However the problem as far as I can see is that Vista installs EAC in
a folder called "C:\Programmes\Exact Audio Copy" and EAC looks for the
cdrdao function in "C:\program files\Exact Audio
Copy\cdrdao\cdrdao.toc"

cdrdao.toc is a temporary file that EAC creates on-the-fly and passes to
cdrdao. It's a sort of cdrdao's own cue file format.

What's likely happening, is Vista's UAC is not allowing this file to be
written in a subdirectory of "Program Files," because EAC doesn't have
sufficient privileges.

OK, I think I understand that. But how do you tell if a drive has
audio caching? Here's a typical spec from Newegg:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827106228

All it says is that it has 2MB of cache. I don't remember ever
seeing any spec specify that the cache was anything other
than "cache".

I figure that the drives I've bought recently do have audio caching
since EAC said they did. Only the two oldest drives I have don't get
EAC to say thay - they are in W98 boxes I've had for over 10 years.
Newegg won't answer any questions at all. I've tried asking about
this from some other online retailer and the guy had no idea of what
I was talking about.

Thanks,

Conrad

Forgive me if this is not appropriate for this list, but I have been trying to
find a suitable ini file for MAREO to work with EAC. I just want to rip tracks,
not create cue sheets. Here's what I want to do when I extract:

compress using --preset extreme to \mp3\[album]
compress using flac at highest compression (-6 I think) to \flac\[album]
delete wav

I would like filenames to be %N %A - %T

It would be nice if basic tags were written to the flac, especially artist names
on various artist CDs.

Any help greatly appreciated. I have searched all afternoon, and what I have
found is outside my ken <g>.

Hi,

Firstly I apologize if this has already been covered in the forum. I did a
search & couldn't find it or phrased my search incorrectly.

On some CD's (very few but enough to be annoying), with the Native Win32
interface for Win NT/2000/XP selected I get the an Unhandled Exception at Native
SCSI.504 -> INDEX RANGE. My DVD burner is not a SCSI device but is a SATA
device. To cure this problem (to some extent) I installed the ASPI interface in
the EAC directory.

Any help would be appreciated.

Also, on some CD's the reported length of some songs is way out. This usually
only affects 1 song title but can turn a 3 or 4 minute song into a 27 to 30
minute song (estimate only). Doing a gap detection does not help this.

Any help on this would also be appreciated.

I am using EAC v0.99 pb4 with Lame 3.90.3. My DVD burner is an LG GSA-H62N.

Thanks in anticipation.

Are you sure that EAC supports your burner? Do you get similar errors
when using other burner software like NERO etc?
Have you already tried to update the drive's firmware?

Do you have the drive's gap detection mode set to A, accurate? If not it
may be worth to test this configuration. Gives the best results here
on various LG DVD writers.

The highest compression level for FLAC is 8 I believe.
Have you tried creating your own mareo.ini file?
I did, and could not get it to work at all until I downloaded a newer
version (6b2) of Mareo.
You'll find a link to the download in this conversation:

http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/lofiversion/index.php/t59569.html

Download that version.
If you still can't get it to work, repost here and I'll reply with Mareo.ini
contents that should work for you with that version.

Hello Juergen,

Thanks for the reply.

I have been using EAC with this burner for about 15 months now. The Unhandled
Exception error occurs infrequently but enough to be annoying. I don't have
problems with any other ripping or burning programs such as CDex or Nero. I
think my firmware is up to date.

I have changed the gap detection to Method A, accurate but this made no
difference to the length of songs problem.

Thank you anyway for your suggestions.

Regards
Mick

I have two guesses...

- I believe Windows Vista doesn't allow user data to be written to the
Program Files directory. Perhaps cdrdao.toc can't be written there, and
therefore can't be read. The solution to this kind of problem can be to
install the program somewhere else besides "Program Files", or to set
the program up to write it's data elsewhere, if possible.

- I notice there's a space in your file name, "cdrdao<space>.toc".
Maybe you have a typo in one of EAC's setup options?

I had a similar problem which seems to be solved by opening EAC as
administrator.

Hope this will help.

Long time EAC user, i'd like to say I'm an advanced user. However, I
recently installed v099pb4 and none of my two drives are listed in the
drop down window. I rolled back to my previous version of EAC (which
worked fine) and still no drive listed. I would list my specs here
but i don't believe thats the prob as none have changed from prev
version. Please advise.

HI,

Would be grateful for some help please.

I've recently ripped about 500 discs to flac, following the instructions given
on
jiGGafellz' Step-by-Step Guide to Secure CD Ripping. I made a cue file for
each disc following the steps outlined in the tutorial, however, when I try to
open a cue sheet using Burrrn I encounter the following error.

Error

---------------------------

Referenced file "D:\Flac files\Over The Hills\Lucy Kaplansky\Over The Hills\10.
The Gift Lucy Kaplansky.wav" not found!

---------------------------

OK

This error occurs for all of the cue files, and always appears to be associated
with the last track.

I shall include a sample cue sheet below, and would appreciate some help as I'm
not familiar enough with the syntax to identify the problem.
Btw, Foobar 2k is also unable to open these cue files.

Many thanks,

Tim.

Hmmm, I'm not too familiar with this, but it seems to me you have something
weird starting with track 5. The FILE command for track 5 should be before
the TRACK 05 AUDIO line, whereas in your example it appears between the
INDEX 0 and INDEX 1 instructions... Same goes with tracks 6 through 10. In
addition to that, the INDEX 1 commands point to locations before the related
INDEX 0's...

For more details on cuesheet syntax, check out

Pyt.

Could it be because Burrrn is looking for wave files but they're in
FLAC format? I thought Burrrn would convert FLAC>WAVE, but maybe
not?...a plugin/addon maybe?

Edit the cue files to remove the absolute references.

FILE "Lucy Kaplansky\Over The Hills\01. Manhattan Moon Lucy"
would become
FILE "01. Manhattan Moon Lucy"

This is normal for EAC's default non-compliant Cue sheets, because the
pre-track gap for any given track is appended to the file of the track
before it.

I have installed EAC and set it up to make FLAC files. All is well on
the first CD, then when I put the next CD in the drive speed is down
to a 10th. It takes 30-50 mins to rip a CD, with speed down to 0.6 -
1.1 x

If I re-start EAC between CDs it works fine with a more acceptable
speed. CD drive is ASUS Silenttrac and PC is a HP laptop with Vista
Home. DMA is aktivated.

EAC version is Exact Audio Copy V0.99 prebeta 4 (including CDRDAO and
Flac packages)

What to do ?

Dear All, I am still quite new to EAC although use it regularly on
secure mode. My copies are good but I don't think better than the
original. I am not sophisticated in my knowledge of it or technical
terms. I recently tried for the first time to extract a CD using
paranoid mode (yes I'm willing to wreck my cheap drive for it) and I
noticed it said as it was extracting it was going at some 5X speed.
And it seemed to take less time than secure mode. Is there a setting
I am missing where one sets the speed of paranoid mode or is it a set
operation? I usually run secure mode at 2X. (I have never done a
listening test to see what speed on secure mode is best with my drive,
computer, etc., but am assuming I am somewhat safe at 2X speed for
secure mode. Speed is of absolutely no concern to me in and I don't
care how long it takes to burn a track from a CD or the full CD.
Thank you all in advance. Jonathan

Conrad,

Did you ever get an answer to your question about how to know if a
drive does not audio cache? That would be useful.

No, I never got any kind of answer and asked the question at least twice.
I'm baffled as it seems that without getting this straight, EAC seems
somewhat useless. The last 3 drives I've gotten have audio caching and I
need to use a very old drive in a W98 box to use EAC. And now my Philips
SP2413 DVDR-W drive has died again (apparently the Philips drives are good
for a couple months. They will fix them for you but it is a bit
inconvenient to have to keep sending them in). So I have to buy another
drive and I'm stymied. The only thing I can think of is the go on the
search for a knowledgable sales person. Yikes, that doesn't seem promising.

Conrad,

Did you ever get an answer to your question about how to know if a
drive does not audio cache? That would be useful.

It doesn't render EAC useless in normal circumstances, it just means
slower rips. Unless your planning on doing a massive amount of ripping
it shouldn't be a worry.

Audio caching is not something manufacturers advertise or list in
specifications. If you want to know you'll have to trust online user
submitted databases.

It should not be a big problem.
EAC itself offer a useful utility that can test if a drives caches data
or not. You can find it on drive properties.
If the test result is "no cache" and you trust it OK;
If the result is "yes cache" or you don't trust a "no cache" result, set
it to "yes cache" position and go on.
If you set "yes cache" and the drive doesn't cache data, the only
consequence you'll have is slower rip (about twice the time).
