Peter,

I searched for some additional info on the equipment required. Attached is the FAA link which has good info, but what are you hearing relative to what this equipment will cost and how it will integrate with what we already have?

The kind of questions we'll have to answer is (1) should I keep my satellite

Which version do I get the US only version or the International version? The
US only gets you the weather and satisfies FAA needs but won't meet be good
enough if you fly outside the US to say Canada, Mexico, Bahamas. For it
looks like I'll get the International version. (3) What cockpit display
should I get? My guess is that this is where glass panels will really shine
and I'm probably looking at upgrading my panel to the Garmin 500 or Aspen.
So far I prefer the Garmin solution but I expect all them to evolve and
improve a lot over the next few years driven in part by delivering ADSB
benefits to the pilot.

Mike,

I can't directly answer your question, since I have not flown with ADSB as
of yet. But it is inherently much more accurate than the system we employ
today. Aircraft position is updated once per second, verses the radar up
date rate of once per 6 seconds. The bearing error gets to be significant
the further you are from the radar site whereas with ADSB, all positions are
latitude - longitude based and with the accuracy of GPS, so distance from
the GBT or radar site does not affect positional accuracy. Altitude is the
same, based on pressure altitude to the nearest 100 feet. When your
equipment receives ADSB reports from nearby aircraft, it can develop and
maintain its own track vector of the target aircraft. If heading is
provided as an input to the display system, the azimuth can be more
accurately determined as to where to look for the traffic. The range of the
equipment is also greater than that for transponder based systems in terms
of how far one can expect to track other aircraft. This allows one to see
faster airline or military moving targets sooner and has great potential for
new applications of the equipment, such as in trail spacing, assisted VFR
separation, free flight, ... . On the ground, runway and taxiway positional
awareness can be enhanced and pilots will be able to see other aircraft on
approach to the runway and if the runway has conflicting traffic on it.
Hopefully, the FAA will listen to its user advisory group and install ADSB
GBT's at each airport that has an instrument approach to it, even though
that is not their current plan. That way you will be able to receive weather
when you are on the ground and at un-towered airports the one in one out
rule could be relaxed and other participating ADSB traffic would be
available in the pattern not including transponder only traffic as in most
cases the pattern is below radar coverage.

Friends,

I recently learned that a fellow EAA member of chapter 863 (Lebanon) has a nice set of aircraft scales and also a DynoVibe prop balancer.  Services for both are available to owners/builders for a modest fee.

Please contact Randy by phone at (615)584-8540 or by email at krhooper (at) gmail (dot) com

Next Saturday is coming together very smoothly.

Children:

So far I have confirmation of two Boy Scout troops. One has 10 so far and the other has 16 for a total of ~26 scouts. We also have a few children not associated with the Boy Scouts which are interested which is great.

Pilots:

So far I have the following confirmed to fly (YE Capacity):

Brian Sutherl and (3)
Steve Kravitz (3)
Peter Cassidy (3)
Andy (3)
Dan (3) - not confirmed
Rick Spencer (3) - Old Hickory Flyers
Shelby?

Pilots - if you have flown YE before (and most of you have) bring your YE# along so I can credit the flights properly in the on-line logbook. If you wish to fly let me know and I will add you to the list.

Ground Crew I have:

Brian D.
Rick H. +1
Marty E.
John B. - Classroom Instructor

Bill has been so kind to take on the challenge of the Chili cook off for lunch. Sounds so good I want some right now!

Schedule:

7:45- 8:00 Volunteer arrival (event to take place at the terminal on the west side of the airport  MQY -between the two FBO's).

8:00 - 8:30 Registration for the scouts/YE's

8:15 - Pilot Briefing

8:30 - Flights take place

10:00 -11:00 (tentative based on flights being finished) classroom instruction.

My cell is 931-220-1600 if you need to reach me. Lets hope for good weather.

One last point is that this event is not limited to the Boy Scouts. If you know of someone that would like to fly bring them on!

Have I missed anything? Sounds like this is going to be very fun!

See you Saturday!!!

I think we usually feed the kids, in fact, from personal experience, I'd recommend they don't eat a big breakfast at McDonalds before coming out for a ride.

6:30 pm for Godfather’s pizza and a great movie

"Fly Away Home"

http://www.eaa162.org/cmsmadesimple/uploads/images/Fly_away_home_poster.jpg

This heartwarming movie filmed in 1996 was nominated for four Academy Awards, and has been called one of the best "Dad flicks" of all time.  Loosely based on the real-life experiences of Bill Lishman, who recently visited Nashville, it tells the story of a Canadian father and daughter who attempt to lead a flock of orphaned Canada geese to a bird sanctuary in the US.

The movie is 107 minutes long so we will start the showing promptly at 6:30 and end by 8:30 pm.  The hangar will be heated but bring a jacket and gloves just in case (forecasted temperature is high 40’s)

Bill,

We've got a supply of stuff in my hanger. Seems like we have bowls, spoons, quite a few cups/napkins - we can take an inventory Wed evening and decide what we will need on Saturday. I need to see what the supply of drinks is, we have some left over from last months meeting but not sure if we'll have enough for Wed and Saturday.

If I'm in town, I'll bring a bowl of chile and help out.

Shelby

to make a large pot of Chili (and some cornbread muffins) for the event and
hope we have more 162ers to do the same. Brian, with your permission I will
coordinate the cook-off. Does anyone have knowledge if the chapter owns any
bowls, spoons, cups, napkins or soft drinks? If not, I will need to buy
these items. Any volunteers for the cook-off please sound off as I will
need some help. My wife will be there to help too.

Isn't the conference room on the second floor? I think I read the G1000
class was taking place on the third floor.

I have two, repeat two wing stands (not wing jigs, and each stand holds a
pair of wings) that will hold completed wings for just about any project.
One was used for painting a set of RV-6A wings. I need to clear these out so
if anyone knows of a builder that could use them, please have them get in
touch with me. They are free to anyone who wants them. One is missing the
casters for rolling around, but $10 at harbour freight will fix that issue.
