KAFFE MATTHEWS
(from the United Kingdom)

    plus

BRENDAN MURRAY
(from Boston)

Tuesday, April 29th at 8:00 PM
Oni Gallery
684 Washington St.
Chinatown, Boston, MA
(617) 542-6983
http://www.onigallery.org/

Tickets are $8, available in advance at
Twisted Village (12b Eliot St. in Harvard Sq.)

KAFFE MATTHEWS is one of the most active artists on the new electronic music
scene, whose surprising approach to exploiting digital gadgets and live
performance has resulted in some unique works which transgress any boundary
between sound and image. Since 1996 she has been regularly performing all
over the world in clubs, galleries, concert halls, tea rooms, boats,
warehouses, amd the outback.

Playing the in the dark through multiple speakers, she samples, improvises
with, and processes the sounds of the performance venue via microphones,
computer and a small theremin, making beautifully clear, minimal works,
playing architecturally with lines, bending them, breaking them and
patterning them.

Recently, she has collaborated and performed with Keith Rowe, Sachiko M,
Christian Fennesz, Oren Ambarchi, Ikue Mori, Pita, Andy Moor (of the Ex),
and Weightless Animals, a trio with visual artist Mandy McIntosh and harpist
Zeena Parkins.

For her concert at Oni Gallery, Kaffe Matthews will be playing through a
quadraphonic, surround-sound speaker set-up.

BRENDAN MURRAY has been active as an electronic musician since 1998.
Murray’s solo performances integrate tape recorders, phrase samplers and
transistor keyboards into compositions comprised of repetitive structures
and reverberant drones. He is especially interested in how these disparate
elements can form a complete sound-event removed from any perceivable notion
of process.

In addition to his solo work, Brendan has ventured into electro-acoustic
improvisation, primarily working with Howie Stelzer and Jason Talbot in TWIN
and Mike Bullock and Linda Aubry in The Please.
He lives in Boston.

Hello everyone,

This is important,
please sign the petition if you haven't already!!
It's good to see more than 760 people already have!

...

"...As most of you know, I went to Mass Art and love Mass Art and
want to help Mass Art.
The school is in a dire situation. it is facing impending
privatization which would destroy the foundation of what makes it
such a unique and important institution. Mass Art is the only state
funded art school in the country. were it not, I, along with
thousands of other artists, would not have been able to afford to
attend art school. i know that i don't need to convince you of the
importance of art in our society. but the importance of an art
education should be equally obvious. please help me save my school by
signing the petition below. because without artists like me, all the
stuff you have would be really boring.
Thanks everyone.
take care.
love,

amy mae

"Henry, a trio that calls itself aggressive, quirky, and visceral.
Besides having a good vocabulary, they also have clear sense of
what they want to do it and how to do it: "Music today is
fashionable and disposable," says Tom Rasku (bass). "There's
too much emphasis on riding waves, and not enough concern
for songs themselves. We started this band hoping we could
make music that is creative and meaningful. Henry is about
music that will appeal to listeners emotionally and intellectually
and won't go out of fashion next year." That said, they've used
influences like Morrissey and Velvet Underground ..."

Modern Expressions: A Club Passim Gallery Opening Monday 4/14/03 6-8pm

Hello Art Devotees

The latest Club Passim Gallery show is entitled "Modern Expressions"
and showcases two skilled artists, Kate Sheridan and Edua Wilde.

The Opening Reception will be held on this coming Monday April 14th
from 6:00pm-8:00pm. The show runs through June 7th. The reception is
free and open to the public.

Kate's digital images are beautiful and hauntingly ethereal. Edua's
prints are moving and powerfully surreal.
Both artists delve into a modern take on the photographic image,
using completely different techniques to coax new visual forms and
meanings.

The famous Veggie Planet is located within the same space, and a
sampling of their food has been generously donated for your enjoyment.

Club Passim is located at 47 Palmer Street in the heart of Harvard
Square.

For more information please visit:

http://www.clubpassim.org

Thank you for your continued support of the local art community and
of Club Passim.

- Sarah

Kate Sheridan is currently a UMASS Boston student, studying English
literature. Kate tries to spend much of her precious free time taking
pictures, manipulating them on her computer, and making T-shirts. As
this is only Kate's second featured show of her work ever, she is
still getting used to writing bios and still feels rather strange
summing up her life and artwork in 3 lines.

Edua Wilde is a professional photographer living in Somerville, MA.
Born, in Budapest, Hungary, she came to the United States in 1995 and
has studied photography at the Ohio State University and at the New
England School of Photography where she graduated in May, 2002.
Edua's work concentrates on architectural, event, and fine art
photography and she is a teaching assistant at the New England School
of Photography.

Since 1996 she has been regularly performing all
over the world in clubs, galleries, concert halls, tea rooms, boats,
warehouses, and the outback.

For her concert at Oni Gallery, Kaffe Matthews will be playing through a
quadraphonic, surround-sound speaker set-up.

http://www.annetteworks.com

The Art Interactive's Spring show, Origins, brings to the Boston area
a significant glimpse of the video artists and visual instruments
that inspire today's interactive artists.

Curated by Mary Ann Kearns, Origins highlights several early
interactive video technologies. Early video tools, unlike today's
generic computers, were unique analog instruments. The Art
Interactive is privileged to display the most well known of these
devices, the Paik-Abe video synthesizer, which was first constructed
at WGBH in Boston. In addition, two other hand-built early
synthesizers will be on view.

Augmented by the display of early analog video tools and the
screening of videotapes by a number of well-known electronic video
pioneers, Origins examines the often-overlooked connections between
today's interactive art and it's origins in early electronic video
experiments.

Steina Vasulka and Walter Wright, who each have installations in
Origins, are well known early video pioneers, and helped to create
and shape video tools and the medium. Video installations by artists
Ben Piper and Benton-C Bainbridge show the influence of the older
tools on younger video artists.

Before the convenience of personal computers and desktop video,
artists relied on the resources of publicly funded centers, like the
Experimental Television Workshop at WGBH in Boston, and the
Experimental Television Center in New York, for access to the tools
of production. The Experimental Television Center in Owego has
graciously donated several of the synthesizers on view in Origins, as
well as their digital database of early video tools and other
materials for the exhibition.

i have recently started research on a documentary project about
the history of black america and am currently trying to figure out
where to get the stock footage for this project.

my preliminary research has led me to the national archives, the
library of congress, and the smithsonian in washington dc.

i would like to know if anyone has any experience conducting
research through these institutions.

how do i go about, first, getting in to start my research. next,
getting copies of both still and motion pictures.

do i need to make appointments before i go? what are the fees
involved in perusing and making copies?

do you know of any other methods of getting stock footage that is
either in the public domain, royalty free, or buyout?

thank you so much.

========== About BEYOND PRODUCTIVITY ==========

_Beyond Productivity_ examines the dynamic intersection of information
technology with the world of the arts and design. This intersection has
already yielded results of significant cultural and economic value,
including innovative architectural and product designs, computer animated
films, computer music, computer games, interactive art installations,
cross-cultural experimentation, and Web-based texts. However, many
opportunities for new
collaborative ventures remain to be explored.

Further information about the study may be found at
<http://www.cstb.org/project_creativity.html>.

The study that produced _Beyond Productivity_ and this symposium are
sponsored by the Rockefeller Foundation.

everyone,

the graduate design school where i am now studying, interaction
design institute ivrea, is holding a second round of admissions
for next year's masters programme. there are a few places open; i
understand that people from technology fields (i.e. computer
science, engineering) and the social sciences (i.e. cognitive
psychology) would be regarded as attractive candidates.

below is some helpful information for those who are interested.

best,
david
http://people.interaction-ivrea.it/d.lu/

----- Original Message -----

Interaction-Ivrea is looking to assemble a diverse group of
students each year from many different backgrounds, cultures and
professional experiences.

Because of that desire, we foresee a small number of openings
still available for the class entering our programme in the autumn
of 2003.

In order to fill those positions, we have extended the deadline
for the submission of application materials from new applicants
until 30 May 2003.

Decisions on applications received by this date will be announced
by 11 July 2003. (We have also extended the deadline for the
financial aid applications). All admission requirements and
procedures remain the same.

An updated schedule of important dates for the process is
available on our website at
<www.interaction-ivrea.it/en/academicprogramme/admissions/>.

FINAL DEADLINE: June 1, 2003

What is Imagining Ourselves?
Imagining Ourselves is an anthology of visual and written work from young
adult women all over the world-- affirming the creative strength of this new
generation, and defining the experiences and themes relevant to women in
this age group.

Submit Your Work!
The Authors of Imagining Ourselves are looking for a diverse, international
cross section of young adult women leaders-- from mothers to artists, from
scientists to farmers. Your work, whether visual or written, should respond
to the following questions:

-- Most importantly: What defines your generation? What is different about
the experiences of women in your age group, as opposed to those older or
younger than you?

-- Other questions: How do you see your world? How do you see yourself as
a woman in your world? What is the world you wish to create?

We are seeking unusual perspectives which portray the environment, ideas,
and aspirations of young women from around the world and which help us draw
connections between the diverse experiences of these women. Send us your
striking photographs, bold poems, fascinating drawings, funny essays… be
inventive!

SAMPLE THEMES TO CONSIDER INCLUDE:

What is a Young Adult?
We are principally looking for work that speaks to experiences of
contemporary young adult women-- that is, a group of in their early stages
of making their mark on the world, in the beginnings of careers and families
and other adult responsibilities. We have defined this as ages 35 and below,
but are well aware that women who fall above 35 may well have work relevant
to the project. To determine if you are eligible, simply ask yourself, "Am I
a young adult?" or "Am I a young woman?" If you think the answer is yes, by
all means, please contribute. If you think the answer is no, then we would
encourage you to to submit work reflecting on the contemporary experiences
of those who are now young adults, perhaps fleshing out what may be
different or similar in the world for young adult women today.

MIT Media Lab Colloquium Series
Peter Lunenfeld - Media Design Program, Art Center College of Design
Tuesday, May 13, 2003 4:00pm
Bartos Theater, MIT Media Lab
20 Ames Street, Cambridge, MA

Title:
"Visual Intellectuals and Networked Ideals"

Abstract:
We are witnessing the wide-scale emergence of visual intellectuals-
people simultaneously making, pondering, and commenting on culture,
but in a way that doesn't always begin with words. We all understand
that digital tools and information technology networks contribute to
this trend, but the big question is how to develop media design
strategies to make the dissemination of critical thinking and
informed opinion both more seductive and more rigorous. A test case
will be the "Mediawork Pamphlets" from the MIT Press, which can be
described as being somewhere in-between 'zines for grownups and
transmedia theoretical fetish objects.

Bio:
A preeminent critic/theorist at the intersection of art, design and
technology, Dr. Peter Lunenfeld teaches in the graduate Media Design
Program at Art Center College of Design. He is the author of Snap to
Grid: A User's Guide to Digital Arts, Media, and Culture (MIT, 2000),
editor of The Digital Dialectic: New Essays on New Media (MIT, 1999),
and editorial director of the Mediawork Pamphlet Series (MIT, 2001-).
A collection of his "User" columns from the international journal
artext is forthcoming.
