Subject: Key to EU6TV IOTA-ISL.ZIP... I'm begging
lou_sica
Send Email Send Email

Fellow DXAtlas Users

I'm sure someone on this group can help me. I'm begging that they do.

I need the password to EU6TV's IOTA-ISL.zip file (all IOTA Islands). I
assure you that I am ***NOT*** trying to steal this file and trying to con
anyone. I DID originally have this password, but I lost it on a system
rebuild. I had sent Nikolay a list and coordinates of New Jersey islands
for his "all IOTA islands" file, and for that he sent me the key. I would
rather be able to contact him and get the password, but, regreattably, he
became a SK earlier this year. Even "zip password cracker" programs don't do
me much good here (even though I'd rather not use them) because they would
take several days to "crack" a six character password, several months to
crack a seven character password, and up goes it exponentially from there.

If anyone has either a password to this file, or a contact person for me
that has Nikolay's old registration information, I would appreciate it.

Thank you all for your time.

Please forgive me, but I have alot of questions. Don't think I'm
stupid, I just need to ask so I know. Ok so I have DX Atlas
(registered), Ionoprobe and HamCAP installed and all configured for
my QTH. My question is how do I understand what it all telling me?
There is nothing in the help file about what your actually viewing.
The help file explains alot of the terms and what you can see/view
with the applications, but there is nothing that actually tells you
what you are seeing. Sorry for the stupid question but I am a total
newbie. Ionoprobe is grabbing the latest data just fine, DXAtlas has
updated my map with info that I put into HamCAP. The questions are:

1) What do the light and dark areas mean on the map? Does dark mean
that that area on the map is a dead zone? Or does it mean ionization
is highest there and thus the best chance of contacting a station?

2) What does SNR mean? What is SNR? Why do I need to know this?
How does it affect QSO's?

3) When I move my cursor around the map in DXAtlas, I see the MUF
change in HamCAP. Is that the MUF for me trying to reach that
location (the location where my cursor is)? Or would I put the
cursor over my QTH and go off what it is telling me the MUF is?

4) The MUF is the maximum (ie. highest) frequency that, based on the
SSN, etc, is best to reach the station?

5) The critical frequency is the highest frequency you can use before
the radio waves start going through the ionosphere?

6) How do critical frequency and MUF differ then?

7) From what I understand, you would find a place you would like to
work, then find out the MUF and stay below that and the Crit Freq?

8) When I have the 3 apps open at once, there is a little yellow sun-
like icon down on the bottom of DXAtlas that displays a number like
8:33-21:15. What does this mean?

Again, please forgive the stupid questions and please refrain from
telling me to go read a ham book. I am reading but I don't really
understand all of this and would just like someone to explain some of
this to me. I have a feeling that once someone explains this, a big
lightbulb will go on in my head and it will all 'click'. Thanks in
advance!

KC0RDG

Hello,

If you are talking about the HamCap SNR map, then brighter areas correspond
to higher SNR.

> 2) What does SNR mean? What is SNR? Why do I need to know this?
> How does it affect QSO's?

SNR is Signal-to-Noise Ratio.

Three factors affect the availability of the path: 1) MUF. If the MUF is
below the operating frequency, the path is closed, no matter how much power
you put in the antenna; 2) path losses. Signal absorption along the path can
result in a closed path even if the MUF is high enough; 3) noise level. Even
if the MUF is right and the signal is strong, the path still may be closed
if the noise in the recipient's area is stronger than your strong signal.
You can estimate these 3 parameters separately to see if the path is open or
not, but it is more convenient to just check the predicted SNR, as this
parameter takes into account all three factors. If the SNR is 3 dB or
higher, your chances are good.

> 3) When I move my cursor around the map in DXAtlas, I see the MUF

> cursor over my QTH and go off what it is telling me the MUF is?

The MUF and other parameters displayed on the status bar in HamCap are for
the path that starts at your home QTH and ends at the point under the
cursor.

> 4) The MUF is the maximum (ie. highest) frequency that, based on the
> SSN, etc, is best to reach the station?

Usually the best frequency is about 80% below MUF, but there are exceptions.
See my answer to question 2.

> 5) The critical frequency is the highest frequency you can use before
> the radio waves start going through the ionosphere?

Yes

> 6) How do critical frequency and MUF differ then?

Critical frequency is just the MUF of a vertical path.

> 7) From what I understand, you would find a place you would like to
> work, then find out the MUF and stay below that and the Crit Freq?

No. You would select the frequency with highest SNR.

> 8) When I have the 3 apps open at once, there is a little yellow sun-
> like icon down on the bottom of DXAtlas that displays a number like
> 8:33-21:15. What does this mean?

This is the sunrise and sunset time for the point under the mouse cursor.

Thanks to Alex to telling me about this link. The ULTIMATE IOTA list for

For some reason, Ionoprobe stopped pulling data a few days ago.
Anyone else experience this? It's been working well for some time.
IE is working without a problem. Could some MS patch have
interrupted this? Is the NOAA site not feeding data?

Mine's still pulling data. Are you running a firewall? Did that somehow get
reconfigured to deny Ionoprobe access to the Internet?

Hi Pat,

Please generate a download log and send it to me. To do so, please
add the following to IonoProbe.ini file:

[Debugging]
AlwaysLog=1

- then start IonoProbe, download the latest data, and close the program.
The IonoProbe.log file will be created in the IonoProbe directory upon exit.

Thanks for the response(s) guys!

This is on my laptop which goes everywhere with me. Last week I was
on a business trip and using a wireless internet system at the
hotel. I thought that I'd better enable XP's built-in firewall for
safety. I'm guessing that is when Ionoprobe stopped functioning.

Over the weekend, Ionoprobe did not download while I had dialed in
to my ISP. This morning (at the office on the WAN) Ionoprobe DID
retrieve data!

So, I'm guessing there is some magic combination to getting
Ionoprobe to work with the XP firewall, right?

I can still send a log if needed, but I think this must be the issue.

Is there a way for DX Atlas to "remember" a preferred start up, i.e.
rectagular,azimuthal,globe ? I have Hamcap, Ionoprobe, Spotcollector,
DxView & MixW all running, but in the end the map renders circular,( I
always use rectangular) BUT it does 'remember' size and placement on
the screen. Can I help teach it to wind up rectangular ?
Just a relatively trivial tweak. With or without, overall, you have a
fabulous system. Great work. 73's Steve KE8PA

Hi Steve,

DX Atlas restores its last used screen dimensions, projection, home
location, layers, etc. if started in the stand alone mode. When another
program starts the Atlas in the automation mode, it is that program's
responsibility to either call the Atlas.LoadSettings method or to force its
own settings - e.g., the program can adjust the position of DX Atlas on the
screen to align with its own window, or it can set the projection that the
author thinks is most appropriate. If you are using one of such programs,
your only option is to ask the program's author to remove the code that
forces the projection.

Note that neither IonoProbe nor HamCap changes the projection in DX Atlas,
you have to figure out which of your programs does that.

My new program, Band Master, will be officially announced in a few days.
It is a DX Cluster client that, in particular, integrates with DX Atlas
and shows the spots on the map. While I am working on the Band Master
web site, you are welcome to take a sneak peek at the program:

This is possible but requires a few extra lines of code in Log-Eqf
and MixW. Please talk to their authors.

well got your Bandmaster,, like I said in last email, will not run
on my lap top.. But have installed it on 7 of my other 9 computers
and it works great ( can not use rig control, as I have ft990 and
ft847,, ) tryed all settings and will not work properly on
either...Some ideas ( I'm not finding fault.. works great!!) but
some ideas..
1. will not let me use com1 on unite with ft847,, 847 is direct
connect db9 pin to back of 847 and it uses com1.. but none of the
settings would work anyway,, I think...I would be glad to fax you
the directions for code for this radio if it would help..
2. Gets way to cluttered (DxAtlas) way to fast,, I set time to keep
spots to 13 min and still gets very busy (cluttered) very
fast..Possible to set "number of spots to display at one time"???
3. How about a "clear all spots" button???
4. a place to configure to different cluster beside the one you have
in it???
Boy other than those, works great!!! I went to the sight to
register after playing with it for just a few min.. ( I see I can't
register yet) but will as soon as you have it setup... Oh yea, one
other thing,, how about adding 2 meters and 440 ( i know not much
happening their but I keep trying!! and they do show up on the
cluster every once in a while...

Good news! I tested the program only on two computers :)

I do not have a command description for FT-990 and FT-947. The FT-947 manual
is available on the Yaesu web site, but the CAT pages are blank. I searched
the Internet again today but did not find anything. If you can, please scan
the CAT sections in these two manuals and email me the images, I will try to
create the INI files for OmniRig to support these transceivers.

This is because of the IOTA contset. When the cluster is so overloaded, it
makes sense to use filters to control the amount of displayed data. E.g.,
you can configure the filter (Tools -> Edit Filters) to display only one or
two bands, or only a specific mode. This is better than limiting the number
of spots.

What would it be useful for?

This is in my plans for the next version.

It looks like I have to start the to-do list even before the program is
released ;-)

Hi Alex & group. Bandmaster is running very well with a Kenwood TS-440 and a
desktop being remote accessed with a WiFi'd Thinkpad. I also am running
Mix2DxAtlas but I don't see 'Atlas' and 'MixW' 'talking' together through
Bandmaster. One conflict is sharing the COM port. Audio to the rig is. of
course uninterrupted, but working digital modes needs some sort of sharing
between the two programs' CATs. I HAD been running SpotCollector with DxView
, HamCap, and Ionoprobe, together with Mix2DxLabs, and results would
transfer by double clicking the desired callsign. Am I missing something?
Bandmaster certainly seems more efficient with system resources than the
DxLabs combos, and I look forward to using your approach.
It seems there was a piece of software out there that would create a
"virtual jumper" to enable sharing a COM port . Even if so, I suspect it may
be a cumbersome way to go.
Anyway, running fine here on Windows XP at 2.4 Ghz all the way down to
Windows 98se at 233 Mhz. Looking forward to learning more about using it.

Thank you for trying Band Master. I tested it only with my TS-570, it is
nice to know that it works with other rigs as well.

I developed a rig control engine called OmniRig that solves exactly that
problem, and released it as freeware available to all programmers. The
programs that use OmniRig have concurrent access to the transceiver and do
not interfere with each other. Another advantage of OmniRig is its
extensibility: to add support of a new rig, one just creates an ini file.

Band Master is my first program that is based on OmniRig, more will come in
the future. Another program that uses this engine is HamPort by Alex RZ4AG.
All other developers are welcome to join the club.

OmniRig is available at http://www.dxatlas.com/OmniRig

Hi Alex:
I'm still trying to get you the CAT command pages for the ft990 and ft847...
Problem is I scaned them and they are really big ( 25 megs per page) and yahoo
will not send... I'm going to have to find a way to shrink them. (even zipping
them will not make them that small.. I'll look tonight to see if I can find a
URL on the web with them.. I would FAX them to you uf yoou like, let me know.. (
if you do not want to give FAX number in open you can email me at

Hello,

I created the INI files for FT-990, IC-7800 and IC-706 MKIIG and uploaded
them to the OmniRig web site (http://www.dxatlas.com/omnirig). These files
require testing and possibly debugging.

I am looking for volunteers who can do a full test of the new ini files. The
complete list of rigs/files to test, the Beta Tester's Guide and testing
tools are available at the OmniRig site.

(OmniRig is a freeware transceiver control engine that is used, in
particular, in Band Master).
