Subject: [dxatlas] Add On Program

Hi Group:

Dick Come (W3WVG)has written a (very small program called EZLog to work with
DxAtlas. If you are connected to the internet and put in a call sign,
program with look up info from QRZ and place a flag, and connecting line
between the stations ( and puts the callsign on the stations) in the DxAtlas
Map.. These are not Permanent and when the EZlog Program is closed they go
away.(flags stay but calls and connecting lines go) This small program is
great for calling Nets or when any groups gets together.. (We use it for
SSTV and Digital SSTV to keep track of who up next)EZLog can be changed to
nicknames, and when station has had there turn, click on call and it will
change color to show they have had there turn (clear to green and back when
it comes around again.) It will also place an antenna on the home ( or
control stations site).. Program sits in small box on the screen and shows
call, name (or nick name) and location. Click on Map and it brings up
DxAtlas.. This is a must
try for groups and DxAtlas can be downloaded for a 30 day free trial from
DxAtlas Site. The EZLog I will have to send to you direct, so email me if
you would like it.. If enough interest is shown I will post ( with Alex's
permition) to programs in the blog.

Alex,

You may recall I was in touch with you some time back about Faros
dying with no errors on a Windows XP SP2 machine.

Unfortunately, despite trying it now on 3 separate machines all
running Windows XP SP2, but different soundcards, the problem is
on-going.

I originally came across the problem with an evaluation version of
Faros. I've registered it in the meantime, but unfortunately the
problem remains.

Please contact me off list (ei4hq.mail@...), and I'll send you
error logs etc.

Best Regards
Cormac, EI4HQ

Hello all:

I have been running DXAtlas/Hamcap for a number of years, with an OS
Windows XP. Never had a problem.

Now I have a new machine running Vista.

I reloaded DXAtlas but when I shut it down I get the message
"Unable to write to C:ProgramFiles\Afreet\DXAtlas\DXAtlas.ini"

I also get this message when closing down Hamcap, but the message
refers to "Hamcap.ini"

When I try to open DXAtlas with Hamcap, I get either initialization
error, or it tells me I need a higher version of DXAtlas, but I have
the latest. Also, I have registered this copy.

Anybody know what is going on?

Looked on the website but could not find any info.

Larry,

The mistake you have made is to run Vista! ;-) Microshaft have totally
re-invented the wheel and then put double padlocks on it.

Try removing ALL the protective gizmos like UAC - OR - re-install dxatlas
in a directory other than program files...or on another drive.

Hi Larry,

For some reason, Vista does not allow the program to write to the
DxAtlas.ini file - perhaps you do not have sufficient privileges for that,
or the file has a read-only attribute - e.g., it was copied from a CD. The
solution is to ensure that DxAtlas is allowed to write to its own ini file.

Alex,

Windows Vista does not allow a program to write to Program Files directory.
If you look at the directory you will see Program Files and Program Data.
The data directory is what is used now. It is part of Vista Security. If
you force a program to write to a Program File directory, it will look like
it does, but actually behind the scene, it writes to User directory, the
logged on user, \AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\program name.
Have people tried running your program using the compatibility mode
selecting XP? I am running IonoProbe and I have a folder
Afreet\InonProbe\Data and also Text in the VirtualStore folders.
MorseRunner is also there. These programs run fine for me. I hope this may
help to shed some light on the problems people are having. My IonoProbe.ini
file is in the IonoProbe VirtualStore area. Google VirtualStore and you
will learn more.

Good Luck and 73,

John

Subject: [dxatlas] DXAtlas/Hamcap - Vista

Tnx

Larry W8LO

What an awesome set of tools! I love it!

Some newbie questions:

     * What do the different propagation types indicate? f2f2, 3f1, etc.
     * How can I import an ADIF log file, or integrate with a logging
program, so Band Master shows the spots I really need?
     * Should I use the same antennas (mine) for TX and RX under HAMCAP?
Or should I assume that RX is the other ham with a better antenna?

Mark,

You have some good questions here but all ( as far as I can see) are all to
do with programs other than Logger32

> * What do the different propagation types indicate? f2f2, 3f1, etc.

I think you are referring here to HamCap. I'm not 100% sure but I believe
it indicates how the signal "bounces" to the destination and off which
layers.

What is Band Master? Personally I have never heard of it. Why use it at all
as Logger32 has a reasonably sophisticated spot filtering system - even with
highlighted coloured backgrounds that tell you what you are missing from
your log. What more do you need? Have you tried clicking on the main icon
15 from the left (two to the right of the Morse key)

Once again a non Logger32 question. The antenna set up is for YOU ( both tx
and rx) . How can HamCap possibly know what the other person is using?

Sorry one and all - I had the original message to this come into my Logger32
email box and answered it as though it was a Logger32 set of questions.

My mistake...

Hi Mark,

HamCap is a front end to the VOACAP propagation prediction engine, all data
that it displays actually come from that engine. The path type codes in
VOACAP are a bit cryptic but fully documented. In particular, F2F2 means a
multi-hop path with reflections from the F2 layer.

The only logger known to integrate correctly with Band Master is AALog by
RZ4AG. When the two programs work together, the status of the spots in BM is
color-coded using information from the logger (new country, dupe, etc.). A
click on the spot not only tunes the radio at the spot frequency but also
populates the Callsign field in the logger, when you tune away from the
spot, the Callsign field is cleared, etc. The best thing about this combo is
that both programs have access to the CAT interface of the radio at the same
time.

Of course, in HamCap you have to specify the TX antenna at one end of the
path and the RX antenna at the other end - unless you are trying to work
yourself ;-)

Hi Jurgen,

Please describe your problem in more detail. It is not clear from your

England is shown.
