Subject: IonoProbe erroneous download
la6vja
Send Email Send Email

When using IonoProbe from a hotel room, I connect via the hotel's WiFi
service. This first requires me to input a username/password which is
supplied by the hotel staff. Once the username/password is verified,
my portable PC has full access to the internet and no more annoying
screens asking me to log on show show up neither in MSIE, Opera or
Firefox.

It does, however, appear that IonoProbe runs into some problems. The
WKHF.txt download, when selected, displays nonsense (that is, the
hotel's login screen) even after I manually select Download > Latest
data. Example is shown below. Any suggestions to solve this problem?

I'm a new user of DX Atlas and Bandmaster. Is it possible to change
the default cluster used by Bandmaster? I would like to only show
spots where the spotter country is K or VE. Since I use AR-User
(Windows interface for AR-Cluster users written by VE7CC), the easiest
way would be to set the Bandmaster cluster to loopback (127.0.0.1). I
tried the "only spotted by neighbors" feature of Bandmaster but I'm
not sure how it functions.

For Morse Runner, would it be a good feature to have the exchange number
have an option to start incrementing at a higher value while in the 'Single
Call' or even the 'Pile Up' run modes?

The reason I ask, is very often I toss my notebook in the car as so I can
busy myself practicing for a few minutes between errands. Also at home I
sometimes play the practice game while filling in a bit of time. The problem
is I now know TT1 in my sleep, numbers over 100 seldom get heard during
these short runs and I sure could use some drill with them.

Is this a good feature to ask Alex for or am I missing something?

73 and thanks to Alex for his addictive Morse Runner programme.

Hi,

I recently downloaded Faros 1.1 and find it excellent. I'll be
purchasing, as, like all Alex's previous s/w, its definitely a keeper.

I'm having one very minor issue: Occasionally I get a Windows error
dialog box stating that Faros could not open error.log in the Faros
program directory. Data is being written to the file is always the same
error e.g.:

2007-02-17 10:53:04 Sound duration error: 7.53 ms
2007-02-17 10:53:14 Sound card OK

If I acknowledge the error, Faros continues to operate happily, but
unfortunately it very occasionally crashes the program if it happens
repeatedly and I'm not around to acknowledge the error message (i.e. the
error dialog boxes begin to stack up).

Running a virtually cleanWindows XP SP2 (installed a week ago) with all
available updates onboard - PC is an Intel P-III 1.7GHz with 256mB RAM

Hi Cormac,

It looks like another application opens the log file occasionally. Are you
by chance running an anti-virus program in the background? If you open the
log in a text editor when Faros is running, this also might cause a problem.

Alex,

Thanks for the prompt reply. Its probably my anti-virus program. I've
only opened the log once to get the information included in my last
mail. I've just added Faros as a trusted process to my AV program-
maybe that'll do the trick... I'll let you know either way...

Hi Eric,

Good suggestion, I am adding it to my to-do list.

Alex

Alex,

OK adding Faros to the trusted process list with Kaspersky AV seems to
have done the trick re access problems to the error log.

One final question; is the unregistered version time limited - i.e. does
it shut down after a certain time period? Faros is shutting down here
all on its own after a couple of hours (from the log, after about 90
minutes or so). No error messages appear. I'm mildly concerned as the
Help/web doesn't mention any such limitation...

Hi Cormac,

The trial version of Faros is not supposed to shut down on its own, the only
time limit it has is 30 days. Also, if something goes wrong in the Faros
code, the program shows the error box and then tries to continue operation.
A silent shut down can be caused only by the system code, such as audio or
network driver, so mu suggestion is to find and install the latest drivers.

Alex, after I had a HD crash last October I received an email from
RegSoft with the registration key from my original 2004 order so I
could get DX Atlas up and running again. Earlier this month I
upgraded my laptop from Win2000 to WinXP. After downloading DX Atlas
and Ionoprobe again, I used that same registration key to register the
programs on my laptop.

For some reason I cannot successfully register Ionoprobe on the
hamshack PC (still runs Win2000). I assume since I got the same DX
Atlas reg. key from RegSoft a couple of weeks ago when I asked for a
resend of the key for Ionoprobe (which I ordered at the same time as
DX Atlas, but not as part of a bundle) that it would work on both
PC's. What do I have to do to get Ionoprobe back up and running on
the Win2K machine?

I am not totally sure that this is correct. I am unable to register
Ionoprobe on my Win2000 PC with the original order registration key,
but it DID register DX Atlas as well as Ionoprobe on my laptop after
I upgraded it to WinXP.

Alex, you have seen this message before, but I have not solved the
problem. When I try to open IonoProbe on my laptop I am asked to
enter the registration code. When I enter the code from my original
purchase of IonoProbe v.1 (17 Jan 05), I get the "thank you" screen,
but when I again attempt to launch the program I am once more asked to
enter the registration code. This is extremely frustrating. What do
I need to do to get the use of the program I paid for?

I have tried checking the box to run it in compatibility mode with
Win2K, which was the OS when I originally purchased IonoProbe. My
laptop now runs WinXP Pro. Still no success.

Hi George,

This happens because an incorrect registration key was entered in the program.
In my last reply to you I suggested that you contact RegSoft and ask them to
re-send the key to you. If for some reason you cannot do this, I can find your
key and send it to you, but I am unable to post it to this forum. Please send me
a private email instead.

Barry,

The search function on the server does not work now, no matter what callsign is
used. This happened before, a few months ago, and the administrators of the
server said the problem was caused by insufficient disk space. They fixed the
problem in a few days.

Check the DX Summit search page, http://oh2w.kolumbus.com/dxs/qin.html . As soon
as it starts working, the Spot History function in Band Master will work too.

I just checked the DX Summit search page and it was working. The Spot

Barry,

No I do not have any PowerPoint presentations for DX Atlas. On a few occasions
when I did presentations of my software at the club meetings, I simply started
the program and showed the audience what can be done with it. IMHO, such live
demonstration is better than screenshots since the program speed, not just
graphics quality, can be seen.

   Alex,

I just checked the DX Summit search page and it was working. The Spot
History also worked a few times, including N8S. Then both stopped
working again. At least I know it's not my configuration. Thanks for
   the quick response.

By the way, I would still like to show DX Atlas to my contest club.
Do you have a Powerpoint or similar presentation that I could use?

Alex/Group,

I use DXAtlas with Bandmaster. In recent times I've noticed that
DXSummit appears to be having availability problems - result: no
cluster facilities in Bandmaster/DXAtlas. This weekend, DXSummit has
been offline for extended periods.

Is it possible to select an alternative cluster source for Bandmaster?

I just purchased the registration for DX Atlas and IonoProbe.
IonoProbe "takes" my registration code and shows that I have a
registered copy.

DX Atlas, takes my registration code, but when I restart the program,
it tells me I have an unregistered copy and my trial period has expired.

I uninstalled DX Atlas, ran Registry Mechanic, re-installed DX Atlas
and I still get the same result.

Can anyone help or tell me where I go for support?

Thanks,

Paul, W3GQ
