Alex,

I just purchased IonoProbe this past week and I wondered why it stopped
working a few days ago. I had installed IE7 final release and that was
about the time it stopped working. Thanks for the update! 73..

It just struck me when going into the map tab that it seemed kinda
plain just having the stations there.

Is there a way to integrate Ionoprobe data into the 'Map' section of
Faros? Or maybe incorporate the HamCap abilities into Faros? Or put
the Faros stations list in DX Atlas?

This is just a suggestion, Great work Alex on all your software!

There is a file called Beacon.lst in the Faros folder. This file is in the
DX Atlas compatible format, it can be loaded in place of the island list
using the File / Load / Island List menu command in the Atlas.

Forgive me if this has been covered elsewhere but I did a search and
really couldn't find an answer.

I have set my home location using both the grid square designation and
also the actual lon. and lat. numbers. The icon looks like it is in
the correct location. However when I make a contact the Path Line
originates from a different location, one that appears to be the first
base location for the grid square. For example my grid square is
EN37su and the path line seems to originate at EN37aa. Perhaps this
is normal but if I can set things for a more accurate portrayal I
would like to do that. Any suggestions or tips would be greatly
appreciated.

Hi Chuck,

DX Atlas knows nothing about your contacts and cannot show your paths. It
must be some other program that plots the path on the Atlas map, such as
your logger or cluster monitor. It is that program that defines the path
geometry. Which program are you using with DX Atlas?

-Greetings "Alex, VE3NEA"

Of course DXAtlas would not know the contact path. I should have
been smart enough to figure that out. I am using DXKeeper, the
logging program that is part of the DXLab suite of software. Thanks
much for steering me in a different direction.

Greetings "Alex, VE3NEA"

The situation has been resolved. I went into the logging program
and found two different spots where my home QTH was inaccurate or
only partially correct. When I corrected those the path line is
very accurate. Thanks again Alex for pointing me in the right
direction!

I also would be interested in how to do this. I have used the pins
in DX Atlas to keep a record of what grid squares i have worked and
would like to print out some sort of master list. Any info would be

Came to the same conclusion in the end myself - re-installed v1.33, and

Apologies for double posting btw, first time I posted I got an error

Subject: [dxatlas] Can't get Commander to work.

I have a IC 756PROIII and I am using the IC CT-17 interface for CI-V.
I also have a RigBlaster Plus and the IC PW1 amplifier. I have DXLab
Launcher installed and working and I also am using DXKeeper, DXView,
Pathfinder and Spot Collector. All are working just fine. Previous
to using DXLab suite I had installed Ham Radio Deluxe and it is still
installed and works just fine. I have downloaded Commander but I can
not get the radio and Commander to talk with each other. I don't have
HRD activiated when I am trying to set up the Commander and I have
read and re-read the instructions and attempted to follow them
carefully but no success. Clearly I am missing the boat someplace but
I am at a loss as to how to proceed or to what I should check out.
Maybe I should just forget it but I am so pleased with the DXLab
applications that I would really like to use Commander also. Any help
you could offer would be greatfully recieved!

Greetings Alex,

Very sorry for the post here. I belong to both groups and obviously
posted my question in the wrong group. BTW however problem is
resolved. For some reason, even though my transciever is set for
9600 baud, it is necessary to set Commander to 1200 baud and then
everything works great. Thanks for you reply and again I am sorry
for the posting here.

Hi Alex and gang,

In the IonoProbe program with the chart number I have notice that the graph
is capable of showing sunspot numbers up to 400. Yet on any historic chart I
have been looking at lately the SS number rarely goes above the number of
200 spots.

Two questions. Am I looking at the wrong charts on the web?

If not. Would it not be a good idea to allow the user an option change the
maximum number on the IonoProbe graph or at least limit it to two hundred
max?

My reasoning is that the numbers would be more prominent on the scale for
day to day use. It should be obvious I am not an expert in this area and am
only looking for feedback from Alex and others.

By the way, it has been quite interesting to watch the numbers and graphs
change on IonoProbe with this past weeks very active solar storm.

Thanks to all,

Eric - VE3GSI

Alex and others,

As everyone knows, with Ham Cap the numbers from IonoProbe get plugged in
automatically. With the solar storm this past week it seemed to me that
propagation shown with Ham Cap did not reflect all the predictions during
the storm.

So my question is this. Would Ham Cap better reflect propagation if it used
the 'Effective SSN' instead of the current SSN?

I only ask because I am not an expert in this area, I do find the Ham Cap
tool to be a valuable tool with my station when used with IonoProbe.

Thanks Alex for this interface,

Eric.

Well, no & no. Ham Cap uses VOACAP as its calculation engine. VOACAP
is intended for making _statistical_ HF propagation predictions on the
monthly level. To be orthodox in this issue, this means that you
cannot use either the current SSN or Effective SSN. Why? Because
VOACAP has not been designed with these Sunspot Numbers in mind. For
further discussion, see http://www.voacap.com/choosingssn.html

Well that leads to the question as to what to put in the field because it is
not picked up automatically....at least not on my copy. I have to enter the
SSN to be used in the calculation. It does pick up the Kp index. If VOACAP
is using monthly averaged info then HamCap and it's map overlays can hardly
be called "Near Realtime" except for the influence the Kp index changes
cause.

I have to enter the SSN to be used in the calculation. It does pick
up the Kp index.

On my copy (Ham CAP 1.5) it shows the correct SSN number (12 for
December). Otherwise, you can find the SSNs here:

If you are running either IonoProbe or DXAtlas you will have a choice of
picking either one on thew "Settings" tab of Ham Cap. I use IonoProbe
and the correct SSN and Kp are then displayed on the Params tab and the
program works correctly. You can also then change either of the numbers
to any value you want if you want to see the effect of either changing
or just want to use data from another source.

So far it seems to be pretty accurate here.

I use IonProbe and DXAtlas. The settings page in Ham Cap has a button to
select the use of both of those, which I depress. The confusion is that the
Kp box in Ham Cap turns green, I am assuming when it is using the data
picked up from IonProbe but the SSN box never changes color to indicate the
same. It does however show 12 upon startup which I assumed was a default
starting point...maybe not. I don't see anywhere in IonProbe where a SSN of
12 is displayed but I do see 12.1 indicated for the month of DEC 2006 in the
spread sheet that comes up when clicking on the sun icon next to the SSN
display box in Ham Cap.

Bottom line it's not been clear to me where the SSN number is actually
coming from and how often it is updated to attempt to be somewhat near
real-time in it's predictions...

Maybe Alex can clear it up.....

I will admit that as far as the peak time to work the VU7 from my location
it has been quite accurate. I still have not worked them but have not had
time to spend in the chase due to wrapping up work related duties. I'll be
able to spend more time in the next week or so but with a 100W and a wire it
will be a challenge. (not impossible)

Have only heard them briefly during the peak on 20m.

Hope for better conditions between now and 1/1 when the flares will probably
start again....

Cecil,

That is strange. When I click on the IonoProbe box both the SSN and the
Kp windows change to green and the numbers change to the current SSN and Kp.

Maybe a reinstall of the program would get things right.

Hi Cecil,

Click on the Download / Old Data command in the IonoProbe menu to ensure
that the program has enough daily SSN data and can compute the smoothed SSN
required for HamCap.

Hi Alex,

Did the download old data and it locked right in. Didn't think to try
that...thanks. The SSN block turned green and showed a SSN of 25...sounds a
little high compared to what others report but it must have picked that up
from IonProbe so I'll go with that!

Managed to work the VU7 this morning at 13:58 on 20M right about the time
HamCap said would be the window. 100 watts and a Carolina Windom at 45
feet. Radio is still amazing!

Loudest I have heard them here....about S-2 with a quiet band!

Thanks again & Merry Christmas...

I have a logging program question for the group...a little off topic but
related. I am using the full DX Atlas suite of software and like the way it
works but want to add a DX logging package to my station that will keep up
with all DX contacts as an electronic log book of sorts. I need it to track
worked and confirmed countries, states, zones, continents etc...for the
awards programs. I don't want to duplicate functionality that already
exists within the DX Atlas suite for fear of decreasing it's functionality.

What is recommended? I do much more DXing than contesting. I have picked
up WriteLog for any contesting endeavors but plan to run it on my Laptop
from where ever I may be working a contest. I can run two PC's networked if
necessary but would like to run just one with maybe two displays with DX
Atlas on one and the logging program on the other.

Just brainstorming right now before I make a purchase decision on another
software package.

I'm running two Yaesu transceivers with plans for one on SSB/CW and the
other dedicated to RTTY/PSK/Faros. I also have a rotor control box with a
computer interface to use once I get the tower up. I'm using MMTTY and
Digipan. I have one PC that's 1.2 Ghz AMD and another that is a 400 Mhz
Pentium. I have two flat panel displays and broadband connectivity to one
of the PC's.

Just need to figure out the best way to tie it all together.

Any suggestions please respond to me direct....

Thanks...

Cecil,

Take a look at Logger32. I have been running it for several years and it
is the easiest to use of all the logging programs I have tried. Also, it
is free.
