Subject: Great Job Alex - Faros 1.0 !!!

Hi Alex,

I've just downloaded and registered your latest program Faros 1.0.
What a great program you have written! The waterfall display, gifs,
and text logging is a great idea. It's something I've been thinking
about for some time, but I'm no where near the programmer you are so
I haven't gotten too far. Your style and intuitive programming fits
me well. The clean layouts and intuitive flow are very welcome. There
are plenty of bad programs out there, which are awful to use. Some
have good ideas, but have been poorly implemented. If we could lay
your programming style and ideas on top of parts of DXLab, we'd be
getting some where! Oh well I'm dreaming big time now.

OmniRig and Rocky are two other programs I'm currently using and like
very well. Rocky is my preferred tool for the SoftRock 40.

I've only been using Faros for a few days and would like to add these
ideas into the pool for the next release or so. You probably are
already thinking of some of these suggestions:
- The ability to add beacons from the 10m band between 28150 and
28300. I'd like to be able to enter around 10-20 beacons, add the
call sign and frequency, and possibly a variable scan rate.
- Support for the SoftRock 40, multiple sound cards, and multiple
serial ports. I'm thinking about dedicating SR40's to several bands
dedicated to monitoring.
- With multiple SR40's I'd like to have the ability to switch and
select multiple antennas by band as well. Say have a vertical for 10
meters and dipoles for the other bands. Being able to select antennas
via the parallel port is something I'm doing today using the Ham
Radio Deluxe program. The 8 parallel port bits select 8 relays using
the 74v2 Kit at www.electronics123.com. The setup works great via my
Ameritron RC10-12v antenna switch box.
- Being able to specify the file folder where the auto-save gifs are
stored other than the default. I want to integrate near real-time
beacon maps from my QTH into my website, which is listed below.
- Now for my extreme wish. Being able to tie beacon monitoring data
to my DXLab spot database in a way which `automatically' lets me know
if a known path is open to one of the 71 countries I have left to
work! Then have it email me, page me, etc… So I can use my remote
control station to work them… I love this stuff and am currently
having a wonderful time thinking about it and rejuvenating the ham
hobby for me Alex!

Again, thank you for a very well written program, Faros! If you need
a software alpha/beta test user I'll volunteer.

Hi

I am having a continual problem of a 'division by zero' error that is making
Faros unusable at present. All the icons are greyed out (soundcard,
transceiver and time servers) so i assume everything is okay there.

I understand a new version is due very soon but i wonder if others are
having a similar problem and whether there is a work-around please?

Hi Andrew,

I have seen this error as well when using VAC - Virtual Audio Control
to route audio amongst several applications I'm concurrently running.
Once I had VAC configured properly, the errors went away. Are you
running any other applications which may conflict with Faros? For
example: IPSound, HRD, etc...

Hi

Thanks for the info. I'm not running any other software at all and I can't
see anything such as you describe under processes in Task Manager.

Any other thoughts please?

Many thanks

HI : try Alex direct: alshovk@...
it seem to me that we had this problem when we were first beta testing this
and as it turned out there was a minor file missing from the program.. I would (
if you haven't already) try redownloading program, and deleting old one, ( save
your registration file) reinstalling and put in yur registration file.. just a
thought..

The new DX Atlas prefix list, available at

entity, as well as Montenegro and the new prefix of Cook Is. City and
Island lists have also been updated as a result of the changes in the
DXCC list. The Prefix.lst and Call.lst files are used in DX Atlas,
Band Master, and HamCap, City.lst and Island.lst are used only in DX

Grady WE4S remarked on the 'divide by zero' problem, (which I'm sure
you're well on the way to troubleshooting), and mentioned software
called Virtual Audio Control. I don't know that one and it sounds
mighty useful. (is it Virtual Audio Cable instead?).
I like to run my radio for digital modes on the laptop, wireless
to the 'rig computer' and would love to find a way to listen as well.
The ears are still better than a display sometimes.
I used to use AudioLink Client from G4ILO but it quit working for me (
maybe run it as a '98 application?)
This is a bit off topic, unless you want to listen to the beacons and
see how well Faros is doing, hihi.
Actually - I've done that and Faros does a great job detecting weak
signals, FWIW.

Good day,

I use nautical twilight, solar elevation -12 degrees. The dark side
of which is a reasonable approximation to when "F" layer illumination
is lost. Or so I am advised.

Good day,

Ref the recent query about twilight settings. The following is what I was
using in the Geoclock GECONFIG.DAT file:

RemSUNLIGHT-0.833 = normal sunset
RemTWILIGHT-6 = end of civil twilight

Added the following lines to the config file and could toggle from one
setting to the other by moving the REM to the appropriate lines:

SUNLIGHT-6.596 = end of "D" layer illumination
TWILIGHT-14.165 = end of "F" layer illumination

The numbers are sun elevation angles and are clearly false precision
given the seasonal and solar cycle variation in the layer heights,
however, it's a start. I guess it wouldn't be too big a deal to add
the option to select something similar in DX-Atlas.

Regards,

   Hi Dave,

It looks like your download is broken. Please see if you can get the
complete file using a download manager.

I just downloaded DX Atlas, and wanted to also get the high resolution
file, but everytime I download it and attempt to unzip it, I get
a "invalid or corrupt file" message. Is the problem on my end or the
   other?

Faros 1.1 and HamCap 1.5 have been released. Both programs have minor
improvements in the user interface and small bug fixes.

I'm in the same boat. I just downloaded it, set it up with omnirig
and it was working fine. I quit it, stared again and now I'm having
problems.

I'm getting two error boxes:

1)Faros 1.1 Division by zero

2)Faros 1.1 An outgoing call cannot be made since the application is
dispatching an input-synchronous call.

I uninstalled and reinstalled both omnirig and faros with no luck.
Running Verify and Client and things are looking OK to me.

Hmmm, may have solved it. I started up MixW and found that my audio
was running much too hot. I backed it down low, quit MixW and started
Faros... no errors so far.

I'll keep testing. Very strange that too much audio causes a divide
by zero error. I had thought that the two errors mentioned might be
related to CAT errors.

I forgot to mention, my CAT light flashes on the FT1K MP MkV Field
even when the error boxes come up.

Hello all

After reading Kevins reply I tried adjusting my audio level down and I
received the two error messages mentioned in previous posts. but only when
the input volume is set to zero, anything above that it runs and decodes for
aprox. 30sec then freezes with no visible error msg.
