Hi All,

I've installed Faros on a Windows 7 PC...

Faros isn't seeing any audio devices - I understand the audio side of things is
handled quite differently in Win 7 than how it was done in XP. Presumably this
is the problem...

Can anyone advise if there is anything I can do to make it work, besides
'upgrading' to XP ;-)

Subject: Windows 7 64-bit work-arounds for Band Master, IonoProbe, HamCap & ITSHFBC
ae9k_dan
Send Email Send Email

I didn't see a previous post about Windows 7 64-bit integration so I
thought I'd pass on what worked for me.

Band Master, IonoProbe and HamCap all required compatibility mode (XP
SP3 worked for all three). Without this, each generated a similar
error:

Exception EOleSysError in module IonoProbe.exe at 0007556D.
Error accessing the OLE registry.

Compatibility mode is set by right-clicking the program icon, select
Properties, Compatibility tab, and check 'Run this program in
compatibility mode for:' and select 'Windows XP (Service Pack 3)'. DX
Atlas did not require compatibility mode to run.

With compatibility mode, HamCap would start but it complained it
couldn't find ITSHFBC. This turned out to be a problem specifically
with the ITSHFBC installer on 64-bit Windows 7.

HamCap tries to find the ITSHFBC executables by looking in the registry
for their installation directory. On 64-bit Windows, the registry value
HamCap looks for is:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{1B\
328085-F1A5-4AB8-8986-0103C5800216}\InstallLocation. Unfortunately, the
installer for ITSHFB doesn't create this registry key and value so
HamCap quits and displays an error about not finding ITSHFBC. The
ITSHFBC installer does, however, write to the registry value
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{1B328085-F1A5-\
4AB8-8986-0103C5800216}\InstallLocation.

So, all that was needed was to create the missing
'{1B328085-F1A5-4AB8-8986-0103C5800216}' key and associated
'InstallLocation' as shown highlighted above (InstallLocation is of type
REG_SZ and its value is the path where you installed ITSHFBC).

Even though the
keyHKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{1B328085-F1\
A5-4AB8-8986-0103C5800216} also contains various other values, don't
recreate them under the new key. Doing so will cause Windows to show
two instances of ITSHFBC within Control Panel, Programs and Features.
If all you create is the key and InstallLocation value, Programs and
Features will show one installed instance.

If you haven't installed 32-bit apps like these on 64-bit Windows, be
aware that Windows will in most cases notice it's 32-bit on install and
suggest a base path like C:\Program Files (x86)\ - that's normal. With
ITSHFBC, Windows doesn't know what's being installed and I think that's
why the registry values written are not backward compatible.

I should mention that the above work-arounds are in addition to the use
of a custom install path. I saw a thread on this forum about installing
to a path of your choosing as opposed to accepting the C:\Program Files\
base path due to the restrictions Windows imposes there. I installed
everything to the base path D:\Program Files (x86)\Radio\ to keep C:
just for Windows.

For those that don't want ITSHFBC in its default c:\itshfb base
directory and think that the warning about using paths with spaces means
trouble, just use the 8.3 character equivalent of any path you want to
use. For example, the path D:\Program Files (x86)\Radio\ is in 8.3
format just D:\Progra~1\Radio\. The number after the tilde may be
different if you have multiple paths for which the first 8 characters
are the same. If so, just open a CMD.EXE prompt and at the root of your
desired drive do a 'dir /x' and that will show the short and long
versions of all the directory names. When installing ITSHFBC, just use
the tilde style version of the path and it's happy.

If you're moving to 64-bit Windows 7 I hope this will save you some
time.

True but DX Atlas would not retrieve live indices from IonoProbe unless DX Atlas
was either run in compatibility mode (XP SP3) or was run as administrator.

Hello to the Group !
I just downloaded the free version of the truly great dxatlas.
However, there crops up for me - beginner ! the following problem :
Although I managed to fix my location and mark it with a red pin I
miserably fail to find out - measure - the straight - as the crow flies -
distance - in miles or km - between my fixed location and the
"target" aircraft plot.
Is there a way to do so - if so may I please have your respective
advice ?
Thanks in advance.
I look forward to your advice.

Would the same workaround be required for Windows 7 32bit OS? I specfically
chose the 32bit OS so as to minimize these kinds of problems.

have you looked at the RBN telnet feed at telnet.reversebeacon.net port
7000? You use it just like a DX cluster, with filtering and all, and
the calls are transferred directly to your bandmap for use as always in
your logging program.

You do not fix your location with the pin.
Go to Tool Bar:
MAP >>> Change Home Location >>> Move Mouse to your grid Square and click mouse.
Now, your home location will show a small antenna.
Now, your distances and directions will be correct to DX Points.

Dear Band Master users,

If you have the GB7DJK cluster selected in the cluster list of Band Master,
please consider selecting another cluster. GB7DJK is a default selection in
Band Master and, since many users do not bother to optimize their selection,
this cluster is now overloaded.

Anybody using CW Skimmer and DX4Win can tell me where can I configure DX4 to
receiver spotted call from Skimmer and how to do this?

On Pete N4ZR article - Introduction to CW Skimmer he says Enable Telnet Server
on Skimmer - I did it.

On Dx4win I put on Preferences - Packet1, Cluster Interface:

Type: Regular
COM Port: TCP/IP
Message Handshake: Skimmer>Skimmer, Localhost:7300
BaudRate: 9600
Flow Control: None
Data/Parity: 8 bits/no parity

Using ALt+A or another key combination can I transfer the current station
callsig from Skimmer to DX4Win Loggin entry?

Be sure you don't have any extra spaces in the Skimmer entry in your
dx4win.tcp file.

Hi group- IS there a way to superimpose a timing mark (say, once every two
hours) at a selected time? I'd like to know when GMT 1800hrs is on my Faros
graph. Is there a way? Thanks,

Dave Mynatt

Is there a way to move all your bulletins to a new computer?

Someone once said that it's all in the 'archive' folder. But I'm not seeing
anything on the old computer in that folder but the examples.

Hi,

I use Rocky 3.6 with my own build Lima SDR tranceiver.

In Rocky, I can push the TX button in CW and BPSK31. But not in LSB or USB.

How can I switch my tranceiver from Rx to Tx in LSB and USB mode, with help of
Rocky?

Is it possible to connect the PTT switch of my microphone to the serial or
parallel port, so Rocky will control this signal and send the correct code to
the USB connection of my tranceiver?

Thanks for any comments!

Kind regards,

Roel

Hello,

David Robbins who maintains the K1TTT cluster has notified me that his node
requires the input of the user name on the first login. He writes,

"if they really want to use my node, or another ar-cluster node, they should
login with a normal telnet program and answer the login questions to get their
name into the system, after that it should login normally with bandmaster."

My home location displays a red antenna, and that is explained in the help file.
But I cannot find an explanation for the blue antenna that is displayed half way
around the world on the map. Can someone give me a heads up on that.

Thanks...

I got that part, john. What happens is that when a call is not selected the blue
antenna defaults to a what appears to be a "home" position, whatever that is,
and I couldn't figure out what it was doing there. I just ignore it now hi. I
am using DX Atlas with MixW, and haven't tried to use it with DXKeeper, which I
also have installed.

I have to re-size the map window every time I start the program. Actually, when
I start the program the former window dimension shows up for a split second
before falling back to some default dimension. Is there any way that I can have
the window start with the same dimensions every time I start the program?
