MyGOSSCON 2009 – WOW

Putrajaya 9 November 2009. The recent Malaysian Government OSS Conference
(MyGOSSCON) 2009 was described by most as a roaring success. MAMPU wowed the 805
participants with the most comprehensive and interactive events and activities
yet in this third successive MyGOSSCON held on 4-6 November at Putrajaya
International Convention Centre (PICC), Putrajaya, Malaysia.

MyGOSSCON 2009, the full-fledged conference was officiated on 5 November by Y.B.
Senator Tan Sri Dr. Koh Tsu Koon, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department.
The conference featured 8 sessions covering 45 papers from a large repertoire of
local and international speakers; 41 OSS showcase exhibition booths from public
and private sector organisations; and several new activities such as the 24-hour
OSS Web Development Contest, OpenOffice.org Competition, and Birds-of-a-Feather
(BoF) and Lightning Talks sessions.

MyGOSSCON 2009 was attended by high profile officials from private and public
sectors, including MAMPU's Director General, Multimedia Development Corporation
(MDeC), PIKOM, Business Chambers and a delegation from Nile Center for
Technology Research (NCTR), Sudan accompanied by His Excellency, Ambassador of
Sudan in Malaysia.

So your new laptop computer died in inside of a year. "I'll never buy a computer from [insert manufacturer name here] again!" I've heard the protests time and time again.

Yeah, maybe you got a lemon, but no matter which brand you bought, you truly are not alone in this situation: An analysis of 30,000 new laptops from SquareTrade, which provides aftermarket warranty coverage for electronics products, has found that in the first three years of ownership, nearly a third of laptops (31 percent) will fail.

That's actually better than I would have expected based on my experience and observations on how people treat their equipment.

SquareTrade has more detailed information (the full PDF of the company's study is available here) on the research on its website. But here are some highlights about how, why, and which laptops fail:

> 20.4 percent of failures are due to hardware malfunctions. 10.6 percent are due to drops, spills, or other accidental damage.

> Netbooks have a roughly 20 percent higher failure rate due to hardware malfunctions than standard laptops. The more you pay for your laptop, the less likely it is to fail in general (maybe because you're more careful with it?).

> The most reliable companies? A shocker: Toshiba and Asus, both with below a 16 percent failure rate due to hardware malfunction.

> The least reliable brands? Acer, Gateway, and HP. HP's hardware malfunction rate, the worst in SquareTrade's analysis, is a whopping 25.6 percent.

None of the numbers are overly surprising. As SquareTrade notes, "the typical laptop endures more use and abuse than nearly any other consumer electronic device (with the possible exception of cell phones)," so failures are really inevitable.

Want to keep your notebook running for longer than a few years? Ensure your laptop is as drop-proofed as possible (use a padded bag or case, route cords so they won't be tripped on, lock children in another room), and protect it as best you can from heat and dust.

2. PC saya tak boleh on. Kalau on, 2 saat dia akan mati semula. Maklumat komputer :-

sebelum blame TM, cuba check dulu wireless tu blh pakai atau tak....
 
caranya, gi tmpat2 yg ada ramai org pakai Wifi (cafe ke stesyen minyak ke fast food ke)
pastu tanya org lain tu, 'internet ok tak?' kalau ok, bukak laptop pastu try...
 
kalau orang lain ok awk sorang tak, then prob kat laptop... godek2 dulu laptop tu
kalau orang lain ok awk pun ok, then prob blh jadi kat modem atau kabel atau TM sendiri...
 
kalau dari clue call 100 pun putus, mcm line tu tak stabil je...

Ni mesti Streamyx Combo Wifi.. Belum proper configure.. ni bukan plug and play. must configure dulu. mungkin apa yang saya catit dibawah boleh membantu... DIY.. kalau minta kontraktor TM buat sah kena RM80. tapi.. do it at ur own risk! Some user have reported problem when changing the setting. Make sure u know how to undo the settings just in case it causes problem.

Connect the modem.
a. Power Cable
b. LAN cable from your PC, NB to Modem
c. Telephone cable - pastikan guna ADSL Splitter yang dibekalkan
    1. The ADSL splitter has 3 connection - LINE, PHONE & ADSL.
    2. Phone line form wal connect to LINE connection
    3. Connect your phone from the PHONE connection
    4. Connection from ADSL connection to the LINE on wireless modem
 
Bila semua telah dipasang, on kan modem.
 
Pastikan DSL light is ON (stable, not blinking), you r ready to active ur account.
 
Open ur Internet Explorer, FireFox or any browse u r using type 192.168.1.1 for address... ikut step bawah lak..
 
1. Log-in to router using admin account (http://192.168.1.1)
Username: tmadmin
Password: tmadmin

2. Goto Wireless > Basic (SMART CONFIG)
a. Change the SSID to any prefered ID. (ikut contoh yang diberi)
b. Save/Apply.
Itu saja... siap....
 
Additional info for Advance User...
 
Using the default SSID by TM will let the whole world know that you are using a TM supplied wireless modem (eg. Riger DB108-WL) and hence easier for hackers to identify what modem you are using and try to exploit any known vulnerabilities.
 
3. Goto Wireless > Security
a. Change "Network Authentication" to WPA2-PSK.

b. Key in the "WPA Pre-Shared Key".
Use combination of alphabet, number and symbols for a good key as u would use for any password. (i.e 10wy@tdotn3t^_^ )
Remember this key as you will need to key-in on every wireless devices (laptop, handphone, etc.) trying to connect to this network.

Note: Older devices might not support WPA2. If this is the case, use WPA-PSK instead.

c. Select "AES" for the "WPA Encryption"

So why not use the default WEP encryption? WEP is the earliest encryption used for wireless router. This is the weakest encryption and is known to be easily exploited with easily available hacking tool. I won't be explaining in detail about this as it has been discuss countless of time on the internet. Go to http://helpdeskgeek.com/networking/compari...cryption-types/ for a brief write-up on the comparison of currently available encryption for wireless routers.

d. Save/Apply.

4. Change the router login password for tmadmin and tmuser

a. Management > Access Control > Password
Change the password for tmadmin and tmuser.

Remember the password. You will need it when logging into the router page in future.

b. Save/Apply.

5. Finally "Save/Reboot"


In my opinion, the above wireless security setting provides the most basic security which should have been the default setting in the first place. There are many more methods to secure your wireless which you can easily find out from the internet. No protection method is 100% safe. However using multiple combination methods makes it more difficult/time consuming for hacking.

btw, remember to disconnect ur phone line to the modem if it is not in use or during lightning...

Dah intall modem tu, tp takleh on wireless. macam mana nak buat lg? sy memang tak pandai. try call 100 byk kali dan byk kali putus di pertengahan, entah samada diputuskan atau mmg terputus, tak dan nak setting habis.  modem ok ja. tolong la bantu saya.. Sekian, terima kasih.

memang masih tak cukup clue nak tolong..
masalah wireless boleh timbul daripada wireless router device atau laptop itu sendiri.

wireless network adapter pada laptop tu enable ke disable?
kadang2 wireless network adapter tu ilang.. kena install driver balik

Dah intall modem tu, tp takleh on wireless. macam mana nak buat lg? sy memang tak pandai. try call 100 byk kali dan byk kali putus di pertengahan, entah samada diputuskan atau mmg terputus, tak dan nak setting habis.  modem ok ja. tolong la bantu saya.. Pernah mengalami keadaan yang sama. Rupa2nya CPU panas. Puncanya heatsink tak rapat ngan CPU kerana plastik yang memegangnya patah. Cuba anda tengok kat situ. Sebab lain mungkin power supply atau mainboard.

nih kena tukar windows baru sbb windows tu patch up site (MS Office official site) dah ditutup kalu tak silap bulan april  thn lepas.
Sy pernah kena, tiba tiba je tak bleh brows internet sbb driver internet dah hilang,
bila buat patch up support site dah tutup
 
satu cara lain re install windows tu semula, tp lama kelamaan ia akan jadi semula, melainkan tidak connected dgn internet.

What do French gendarmes, Andalucian school children, Wikipedia and San
Francisco International airport have in common?

It is not the set up for a tortuous pun. Instead all of them are big users of
the free Ubuntu operating system.

The French national police force runs its operations on the open source OS;
computer systems supporting Spanish schools have their own version; the online
encyclopaedia runs its hundreds of servers on Ubuntu and SFIA's internal
computer system is based around it.

Ubuntu is based on Linux - the open source operating system that is maintained,
expanded and extended by legions of fans and professional programmers around the
world. Thanks to their efforts Ubuntu has become the most popular of all the
Linux distributions.

On 29 October, version 9.10 of Ubuntu is released. All versions of the operating
system have an alternative alliterative appellation. Ubuntu 9.10 is known as
Karmic Koala.

The launch comes in the wake of Microsoft's fanfare around Windows 7 - the
latest incarnation of its flagship operating system.

Factory mode

While Ubuntu's developer Canonical can not quite match the hoopla surrounding
Windows 7 for its launch, the software competes where it matters, said Chris
Kenyon, one of Canonical's OS evangelists.

"For the first time in 20 years you can buy Ubuntu pre-installed from more than
one manufacturer," he said. "That's an extraordinary story."

Computer makes HP, Dell, Toshiba and Acer now all offer the OS as a choice on
machines people buy via their websites. The number of models varies by territory
with the software proving more popular in some places than others.

Dell China, said Mr Kenyon, has more than 40 models with Ubuntu available.

Before now, he said, many people installed the software themselves on laptops
and desktops that formerly ran Windows. Their experiences varied because the
development effort that helps to keep Ubuntu updated sometimes lags behind what
people are using.

But, he said, with the software increasingly likely to be installed at the
factory those days of frustration may be on the wane.

"Hardware problems are only really solved through installation," he said.
"That's going to become increasingly the case over the next 12 months."

Competition time

The steady march of technology was also removing many of those stumbling blocks
that stopped people plumping for Ubuntu and kept them with Windows or Apple's OS
X, said Mr Kenyon.

Some have been reluctant to move to Ubuntu and open source software because it
would mean learning their way around programs that were the equivalent of what
they used on older machines.

But, said Mr Kenyon, the growing use of web applications - such as Google Docs -
was eroding those differences quickly.

"The web is making the compatibility part far easier," he said.

To help with that ease of use Ubuntu 9.10 has Firefox 3.5 onboard that works
with the many web-based programs, such as the BBC iPlayer, that are becoming
increasingly popular.

With the web levelling the playing field between the different OS makers, Mr
Kenyon said the fact that Ubuntu runs faster and is more secure than rivals on
the same hardware will convince many to try it.

He admitted that some of the security of Ubuntu was down to the fact that cyber
criminals do not target it in the same way as they do Windows.

"Some of the security is through obscurity but it's also better by design," he
said. "Fundamentally it requires you to run a safer system. It's there from the
ground up."

Canonical is also making it easier to road test Ubuntu with a "live mode" that
lets potential users run it off a USB drive to check its compatibility with the
hardware on their desktop or laptop.

Evidence that it is being taken seriously can be found, he said, in the annual
"10-K form" that Microsoft files with the SEC. Every public firm must file one
of these to outline the market conditions and competitors it believes pose the
greatest threat to its business.

In 2009, for the first time, Canonical got a mention.

Given that Microsoft recognises its success, Mr Kenyon is convinced that it's
only a matter of time before Ubuntu's 12 million strong pool of users is joined
by many more.

"We're nearing a tipping point," said Mr Kenyon.

The third premier annual OSS conference, "The Malaysian Government Open Source
Software Conference" (MyGOSSCON 2009) will be held from 4th to 6th November 2009
at Putrajaya International Convention Centre.

The registration for participating in MyGOSSCON 2009 is now open! Please visit

Target Audience

While MyGOSSCON 2009 is directed primarily at Government of Malaysia (GOM)
agencies, attendance is open to participants from outside the Public Sector.

Number of Participants and Exhibition booth

The conference is expected to be attended by at least 800 participants. In
addition, a total of 40 OSS showcase exhibition booths are anticipated in this
three-day event.
