Back in message 579 on 5 Sept, I floated off the idea of creating a
web page focussed on the Hilltown area.
This gathered a fair amount of interest and support.
I went digging for material - and struck gold - real "pay dirt" in gold
miner's terms.

An" A-Z of the Hilltown - A History of Dundee's first suburb" is listed in the
TV FHS Book list - as itemD-04 price - one pound &50 pence plus postage.

It is a really marvellous booklet published by the Grey Lodge in 1989.
and reprinted in 1994. Any one interested in the Hilltown must buy this!!

My thought of a web page have been killed stone dead. This is a really super
book for those interested in the area - listing schools, Kirks, Closes,
pubs etc.

Go to the Tay Valley FHS new Web Page, and order it!
This is at http://www.tayvalleyfhs.org.uk

Despite or modest level of message exchanges, we seem to be able to
attract a good flow of new members. One of our strengths is the very
great range of historical Files, and useful links which we have accumulated.
Our File Page contains very many quite fascinating old photographs, and
Post Cards of old Dundee, in the mid 1800s thro' to the very early 1900s.

I would encourage our new members to have a wander around our Main Page
at eGroups, and to look especially at out Files, and Links. There is a lot of
quite useful information in these Archives. So too is there an accumulating
Bank of information on the town in our Message Archive.

I do really encourage new members especially to have a good
"sticky beak" around the shop. Lots or real interest. don't
be slow to raise issues of particular concern to your own interests.

Books are often a good source of information. Before you pop off
to your local Library, have a scan over my Page of local History
books which I have accumulated, from a variety of sources.
Tune in to http://jimjar.net/DUNDEE.
I have quoted ISBNs wherever they exist to help you at the Library!

Hello Carol,

My brother and I are also searching Taggart. Mary Jane Taggart was
married to my grandfather, John Low. She died in 1910. I think her
father was William and she had a brother Hugh who was killed in WWI.

Can anyone shed any light on Shipbuilders or Shipowners by the name
of Gorrie in the late 19th Century in the Ferry Port on Craig area of

I have found the following info on the Tayside Maritime history site -
both are in our family history. However the story goes that one
Thomas Gorrie sailed in his own ship to Australia after the death of
his wife - Agnes Dingwall. Does this ring any bells with anyone - or

Bob, A difficult one really - I was a member of the 57th Boy Scout Group
associated with the Ward Road Methodist Chapel in Dundee, and had a very
good friend Wilf Fern , a methodist Minister, who went off to Canada, at
the end of WW II . My instincts tell me that some internal review might be
your best source of info - I have no recollection of having seen anything
published openly about the Circuit in and around Dundee.

Sorry not to be more helpful.

Dear Corinne,

Heather Mahoney (Gorrie) in Truro, NS was part of a group that
produced a wonderful book on the Gorries. I got a copy and looked up
your names but did not find them. This line of the family seems to
come from Falkirk. Heather's e-mail is

However, last spring my brother sent me some e-mails from some
searchers he found on rootsweb that seem to be on your path. There
was a Jonathan Gentry jgentry@... and Linda Martin

Hi,

I've traced my family to Dundee where my grandmother and grandfather
were born. Some of the family names are Goodale, Chisholm, Richardson,
Mitchell, McDonald. Does anyone have any links to any of these names in
Dundee?

My GG Grandfather was Henry Goodale and his wife was Susan Mitchell.
Then there was Peter Richardson and his wife Agnes Bonar McDonald. Both
these names were found in the marriage records of my G Grandfather & G
Grandmother William Goodale and Grace Richardson married Dundee
12/22/1877 at St Pauls Church Dundee.

My Grandfather was born 2/3/1882 on 18 Bell Street Lane, Dundee and his
name was Peter Duncan Goodale. He had two brothers before him that I
know of. Henry & William. I don't know where they ended up, but my
grandparents moved to Boston from Dundee.

I'd love to find family. If any of these names ring a bell, please drop
me a line.

Thanks

Hello,
Would any member know where the Sailor's Hall was located in Dundee in the
early 1800's.
I presume not too far away from the docks, but I cannot find it on any of
the early maps of Dundee.
My g.g.grandfather CHARLES BAYNE was a Dancing Master, and he held his
annual balls at the Sailor's Hall.
Many balls were held there organised by other people, but none of the
notices in the papers stated where it was located......
Thanks in advance,

Hi:

I am interested in two areas of immigration.

1) My grandmother and great-aunt worked in the jute factories in Dundee in
the early 1890s. It is believed that they were part of an immigration
scheme to the United States which involved young women immigrating and
working as domestics in the New England states. I would like to know more
information about such schemes, i.e. was it organized through the churches
or the textile industry.

2) A whole family moved from Ireland to Dundee in the late 1880s and worked
in the textile industry also. Was there a specific immigration scheme for
Irish immigrants to Dundee at that time.

Any references to history books would be appreciated.

To answer your 2nd question, I believe Cox Brothers had a representative in
Ireland whose job was to recruit workers for their Dundee factory. I'm not sure
if it was as late as the 1880s but may have been (Andrew Nicoll correct me here
if I'm wrong). I've never found out whether other manufacturers used similar
methods. They may have.

I wouldn't like to say :-) Pondering over the thought for a minute, it
occurred to me that the 1880's were well into the jute era of Dundee, and I
wonder whether they would still be *actively* recruiting in Ireland? Its
very possible that many were still travelling to Dundee at this time from
Ireland, but would the mill owners still be actively recruiting when they
had a very large population in Dundee at this time?

It might be worthwhile trying to track down the census reports (not the
actual films) they will give you a lot of demographic information, and it
may be possible to follow or establish trends from 1871 to 1881 and then on
to 1891. I would imagine Library of Congress would have them, Canada ...
well, try University of Guelph ... they seems to have the biggest collection
of Scottish material in North America.

Hope this helps

Andrew

I knwo there were direct trading links between certain parts of Ireland and
Dundee during the linen era of Dundee, but am not sure whether this carried

Hello everyone,

I thought you might like to know that I've now put a new web site on-line.

It's for Dundee Parish Church (St. Mary's), the city church. As well as all
the usual pages, of particular interest to Dundee history fans will be the
page with a full history of the church and its buildings, plus a detailed
description of St. Mary's Tower, more commonly called the Old Steeple, which
I wrote some years ago, and published to this list a couple of years back.

Our web site has a number of links to other Dundee churches, all with very
interesting web sites.

Finally, I'm planning to get a whole load of photos on-line, for a complete
guided virtual tour, but in the short term, a couple of interior shots are
there just to whet your appetite!

As usual, comments and suggestions are gratefully received!

Best Regards

Hello Lynn

I'm afraid I couldn't really say - not my field of expertise. But if I do
remember correctly, there were a number from Cavan ... don't know anymore
than that really or whether Cox's actively recruited from there.

This message arises from Grant Buttar's predicament, which we must
all be anxious to ease, one way or another.

May I just remind everyone of a recently introduced facility for reviewing
the Messages which are sitting in our Archives within our Main pages at
eGroups - If you go to "Messages" you will now notice an "expand" tag.
By clicking this, one now can read continuously all the recent messages,
in one hit! For instance the current Message page on the Bridges Group
includes the headings for messages 878-907. If one "expands " this page,
one can read the full contents of all the messages 894-908, a second hit
will, open up messages 879-893,

Grant could well recover some of his many contributions to our Groups,
by doing a judicious bit of "Copy/Paste" work. This Expand feature does
make it much easier for us all to review a group of messages, as a thread.
The problem of picking up the surrounding HTML coding may make this
dodge unattractive at the end of the day for Grant's need to restore his files.
ERRATA - no! one gets a nice clean Copy'Paste job with no complications!
Have just done a dummy run!

Please may I compliment Ken Anton on the production of such
a splendid web page about this lovely old Church.

To come face to face with the organ gallery, where my family had
a sitting in the 1940s on the North end, was quite a surprise!
This was actually the City Council gallery , which was normally empty
for most of the year. Dr J D Duncan got fed up preaching to an empty
gallery, and he persuaded my Father to take a sitting, along with the
Hardie family, which we occupied for very many years. George Gray was
the Assistant minister at that time, and the organist was a Mr Arthur.

I am so grateful to you Ken for all your efforts in putting this
information together, with beautiful photos. Incidentally A L Russel,
who designed some of the windows was principal of the Arts School in
Bell St, and was a well known stained glass window artist! He was
also my Scout Master for many years!!

Enough nostalgia for the Group, I am sure. Nice work

Jimmie R, now of Eumundi, Qld., Oz !!
