I remember this from when I was in primary school! I would have been
about 8 or 9 and it was a great occasion when the computer with the
huge discs. I remember we could get everything - picutres of our
local leisure centre, of the raspberry fields round about Forfar - it
was a dandy thing!

Can anyone shed anylight on the structure located on Westgrove
Avenue, Dundee. I remember playing there as a young boy in the
1980's. It seemed to be what looked like a fairly old large house
and was/is derelect with only parts of the walls remaining. I
remember that it was located to the north of No. 8 or 10 I think (on
the left hand side) if you were travelling north (up) from the Perth
Rd end. There was a small road/driveway leading to at least one (or
possibly more) small house/cottage.

At the time I tried to find information regarding the history of this
building and located an old map in the central library but was unable
to shed any light on it.

I do remember that the map showed that Westgrove Ave was previously
called Binns Alley (or something similar).

If anyone has any information relating to this building I would like
to hear from them.

I recall that prior to Regionalisation in 1975, the cities of Dundee,
Aberdeen, Glasgow and Edinburgh were referred to for some
administrative purposes as "Counties of Cities". For some obscure
reason, this subject was a regular item in the "Local Government"
section of police written examinations!! Can anyone tell me when this
term was introduced, and under what legislation? Also, was this one
single act or were the various cities dealt with individually at
different times? Any info will be appreciated.

Hi Ross. You said:

>"Counties of Cities"

From memory, I think this title was bestowed on Dundee in 1894. (I think
I read it somewhere.)

Someone may come up with the definitive answer before I have had time to
check.

Two of our members have recently asked about this ship, and the book
by Linda McGill. Until quite recently this was stocked by the Tay
Valley FHS in their Research Centre in Princes St Dundee. They may
still ber able to lay their hands on a copy.

Bot our enquirers are lucky - they each have Yahoo IDs and can search
our archives as i have just done. We had a spate of messages about
the Mars between #42 on 3 Jan 1999 and 171 on 6 Aug 1999. just
feed "mars" into the message search box.

Amongst the messages was a beaut web page - still working at
http://www.sol.co.uk/s/scott.wilson/mars.htm Scott Wilson was a
member of our Group for quite a time.

It is Christmas morning down here in Aussie - Can i wish you all a
great happy Christmas Day - and later on - A marvellous Hogmany.

Water was a frequent power source for textile production prior to the
introduction of steam. There were many burns running through Dundee
which were eventually put into culverts under roadways etc. Which
particular part of the city are you looking at?

This one intrigued me for a few different reasons ...

Yep, Dundee was given COunty of City status in about 1894ish - can't
remember exactly. Before this it was simply a Royal Burgh in the
County of Forfar and they seemed to need further powers of their own
to do various things (not sure which things ...). Dundee also, I
believe, wanted their own Lord Lieutenant which they couldn't have
when Forfarshire was the county.

These would have been set up at different times for the different
cities - BUT, Aberdeen, Glasgow and Edinburgh were always the county
towns anyway - Dundee had to wait until the 1890s for an act of
parliament to create it as a County of City since Forfar was the
County town. Dundee lagged behind in this respect.

I'm intrigued by this bit! Try as I might I wondered why they would
be a part of the Local Government questions section - is it because
they had their own byelaws etc and you had to be aware of the various
different setups in each area?

Can I just add that the Tay Valley Family Historian published a
review of this book in issue No 46, of January 1997, p8, by Margaret
Johnston, one of the members. This was mentioned in our message #160,
which is in our Archives.

Thanks for the info, Andrew. You may be right. City of Dundee
Police used something like "consolidated powers" to deal with
numerous minor crimes and offences, e.g. known thieves loitering,
various nuisances, etc. The Burghs in Angus had something similar,
the Burgh Police (Scotland) Act, 1892, but this was of no effect in
the landward areas, so there were differences in the law within the
same police force areas. I spoke today to a former colleague, and he
reminded me that the local exams in Angus always contained, inter
alia, the three questions -

1. Name the four Counties of Cities in Scotland.
2. Describe the colours and sequence of traffic light signals.
3. Draw a plan showing the dimensions of a pit which is dug to
cremate the carcase of an animal which has died of anthrax.

It is my colleague's belief that the current training inspector used
this method to ensure that no exam candidate need be concerned that
he/she would not be able to get some marks!!!

Sadly, the gentleman concerned is no longer with us, so I cannot
confirm this.

Regards,

Ross

This was the Dens burn, which flowed from beyond the Law, past what
became Victoria Street and was harnessed by Baxters to power Dens
Works. It soon failed to provide enough power as production expanded
(not helped by its tendency to dry up in summer), by which time steam
power was the order of the day.

Like many others, the burn was culverted. I believe the arches of
Victoria Bridge (the western end of Victoria Street) can still be
seen from inside the former works grounds (now a housing development).

Hi group,
Veeder Root.
I worked there from 1977-79, the factory was on the Kingsway at the end of the
Charleston housing scheme, next to the NCR.
They made among other things, a one day and a seven day Tachograph, counters for
cars etc, and they had a factory in Beechwood that made bigger counters, for
pertrol pumps etc.
In the seventies it employed a couple of hundred women, so it was no smalll
factory.

No, that was Vidor. Veeder Root was an engineering company, indeed
it still is, only not in Dundee (see www.veeder.com). The company
locally became TVI Europe Ltd after a management buyout (see
www.tvieurope.co.uk). They have since merged with another company.
