As to the second question, Dump & Run offers both marketing and
organizational help, but primarily organizational and informational. The idea
is to help a group get a program on its feet, and operational. The exciting
news is that the program is growing by leaps and bounds - 12 schools have
been thus incubated by Dump & Run to date, with 6 new schools starting up
just this year! Proceeds from Dump & Run projects have more than TRIPLED
since last year.
Kudos to Bowdoin College, for having the newest and most successful Dump &
Run sale to date: raising almost $12,000 in one day! Congrats go to Keisha
Payson and the Bowdoin College volunteers!

An excellent question, Meenal, and I am glad you raised it.
Dump & Run is an entirely volunteer run organization which gets its operating
budget by taking a portion of the proceeds from each sale and using that to
cover expenses.
Dump & Run helps sponsor sales in various locations, helping local nonprofits
to use the sales as a fundraiser. Typically, Dump & Run takes 30% of the
proceeds after expenses, leaving 70% of the remaining funds to be distributed
among the various volunteer groups.
Thanks for asking Meenal - any other questions on the floor?

Hello everyone in Dump & Run land...
You may have noticed that we just recently received an unwelcome spam to our

& Run would never do such a thing. This spam came from the fact that
Dump-and-run is a public list, which means that anyone is free to subscribe to
this list. They are a nuisance, but they don't come very frequently.
As for Dump & Run, please stay tuned for some exciting news!

As quoted from http://granthelp.clarityconnect.com:
Most people are familiar with claiming donations of cash and goods as
deductions on their income taxes, but they overlook the donations that
they make as volunteers.
Volunteers can often deduct costs associated with their volunteer work
such as stamps, office supplies, and long distance phone charges.
Volunteers that travel may be able to claim 14 cents per mile (if they
drive) and the cost of fares, tolls, parking and overnight expenses.
You'll need adequate records and limitations apply, but I encourage you

Japanese Police Arrest 'God of Garbage'
TOKYO (Reuters) - A Japanese sanitation worker known as the ''God of Garbage''
was arrested by police this week for threatening a bar owner at knifepoint
because he refused to separate his trash, the Mainichi Daily news
reported.
Mizuo Tamura, 55, a manager in the environmental section in the Kajiki
municipal government, was arrested for breaking Japan's Firearms and Swords
Control Law early on Thursday, the newspaper said in its online edition.
``(The bar owner) wasn't separating his rubbish properly,'' Tamura told police
in Kagoshima on the southern island of Kyushu.
Japan has rigid rules for separating different types of trash, including food
refuse, general waste, business waste and bottles and cans.
The newspaper said Tamura oversaw the town's garbage collection and had been
arrested several times in the past for trying to enforce the rules in an
over-enthusiastic way.
``He's so keen on his work, everybody refers to him as the 'God of Garbage',''
his boss was quoted by the newspaper as saying.

Dump-n-Run organization a couple of years ago by its founder, Lisa Heller.
She told me what the whole thing was about, and it totally grabbed my
interest.... I think one of the best things to do is score perfectly good
"trash" and put it to good use. The age old quote, "One mans garbage is
another mans treasure," comes to mind.
I'm not really sure what else I could say without going completely overboard,
so I guess I'll put this introduction to a wrap. :)
Take it easy,
shaun :)
Hello,
I'm Ellen Dunton, a graduate student in political science at Lehigh
University. My graduate project is to devise a plan for the university
which deals with the problem of end of year student waste on and off
campus. (There has been a collection and sale for the past two years
organized by a few faculty members. The last one in September 2001
raised over two thousand dollars for charity.) I just learned of dump
and run and would like specific information to include in my preliminary
report, which outlines possible options for the university. Any and all
info would be appreciated. Many thanks,
Ellen Dunton

Just one more email and then I'll shut up for a bit...
I wanted to introduce someone who is not in this group, but who is a great
friend of Dump & Run: Reena Kazmann and Eco-Artware.
Ecoartware sponsors a "recycling rag" online newsletter
http://www.eco-artware.com/newsletter.shtml
There are interesting articles relating to recycling and profiles of
interesting organizations. (they have profiled Dump & Run in the past) They
have an online store of items made from interesting recycled materials, and
have generously donated items from their inventory to raffle at Dump & Run
sales this year.
Check out their site - they sell the coolest stuff, like bottle openers made
from bicycle chains, and computer circuit boards turned into CD cases, or
baskets handweaved into telephone wire... really artistic!

Now that the group has grown a bit, I think it's appropriate that we
all take this opportunity to introduce ourselves to each other. Let's
start with why we're here, our current involvement in Dump & Run, and
what we're hoping to get out of this list-serv.
I'm Lisa Heller, the founder of Dump & Run. I see this listserv as a
communication channel those people who have participated in a Dump &
Run event in the past and those who are just here to find out a little
bit about what it's all about.
I'm hoping we can get a bit of a dialog going
Hi All -
Well, the Dump & Run 2001 season has officially closed, with 6
participating schools, lots of trash saved from the dump, and the
grand total figure for amount raised for charity: $17,000!
The latest news: OXYGEN MEDIA (An Oprah affiliate network) will be
profiling the Columbia Sale on November 13th, so keep an eye out for
listings!
This past year was a HUGE growth year for Dump and Run - we had 6
great sales, with each school raising between $2000 to $5000 after
expenses. Then there's the press we've been getting. There's been a
ton of really positive press over the last year, including articles
in the New York Times and on the front page of the Boston Globe, Waste
News, People magazine, College Bound magazine, Family Circle, Sierra
Club Magazine, Syracuse Alumni magazine, Maine Public Radio, WBUR
Boston, and for anyone who hasn't checked out Stonyfield Farms Yogurt
webpage, we're there too!
Thanks goes to EVERYONE who helped make this possible... you need to
give yourselves a pat on the back. Where it has been implemented, the
Dump & Run program has significantly decreased student waste by up to
50%. This has been clearly documented in at least 2 schools, and we
need to make a greater effort to increase our documentation efforts
in the future.
Let's make 2002 another fantastic year. We've already got 6 Canadian
schools signed on, and the number is growing... let's see if the
interest in the US can keep up!
Best to all,
Lisa K. Heller

***PRESS UPDATE***
Check out the February 20th issue of Family Circle Magazine (on newsstandds
now) for an article on Dump & Run. The article, titled "Graduation Goodies,"
can be found on page 16! Pass it on!

Hi everyone -
Happy new year! Or should I say, happy new millenium. I hope it's been
earthshattering in a good way for everyone, and if not, well at least that
you're all getting along spiffily.
This past year was a very busy one for Dump & Run. We were heavily in the
news. Within 3 months after incorporating, D & R gained regional recognition,
including articles in the New York Times and on the front page of the Boston
Globe. Within 6 months, Dump & Run attracted national attention and was
featured in articles in Waste News (60,000 readers) and People magazine (3
million readers). Upcoming articles are scheduled in College Bound magazine
and Family Circle this February. I was interviewed for two radio interviews
and two newsletters. The Environmental Protection Agency, Stonyfield Farms
Yogurt and the state of California have all chosen to highlight Dump & Run
for it’s "best practices" waste reduction efforts in forthcoming publications
due later this year.
Since October we've had inquiries from over 40 schools or localities
interested in bringing dump & run to their spot this coming spring. That's
great news! It means that we can be fairly selective in picking those 10
schools with the highest commitment level to get involved with the project,
increasing our chances for hosting a successful event at each school. Since
10 schools means that individual visits are going to be more numerous, we're
sending packets out to all interested schools and scheduling a meeting day
with all campus individuals way ahead of time.
Within the next 3 years, Dump & Run plans to create a strong regional
presence in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states. Plans are under way to
conduct programs at 10 schools in spring 2001, 20 institutions in 2002, and
30 schools in 2003. Within the next 5 years, we plan to expand Dump & Run
operations nationwide.
Let's hear your thoughts on how this can happen! If you're on this list,
you're a core member of our team, and we need your help!
Thanks everyone,
Lisa Heller

Hi everyone in dump-and-run land! This is just a test of our friendly
listserv, and wanted to give everyone an update:
1) We have a sale this weekend! It's going to be on Sunday from 9 am
to 3 pm at Tufts University, so if you're in the area, please stop by
and help out.
2) Lots of press has been happening. We were in the New York Times
and The Boston Globe, and People magazine will be at the sale on
Sunday...
3) We are getting our web page into action! Kudos to Lori and Patrick
for putting that together...
4) It's time to start organizing volunteers and network organizations
for the upcoming year, so any ideas, please pass them along. Let's
get a discussion going.
Let's make the year 2000-2001 really stand out!
Lisa
sorry to send this to the whole group.
Lisa--i left your e-mail address at school, and i want to send you a
note. could you remind me what it is?
