OK, I was a little dramatic in that last post, and I think I failed to
really make a case for rejecting the proposal. In summary (and these
items are pulled from an article on the US House of Reps site (which
can be found at
http://www.house.gov/judiciary_democrats/hjres4dissenting108cong.pdf):
...If this proposal passes, it would be the first time the Bill of
Rights is amended to limit our rights. It may open the door for other
proposals...
...From 1777 to 1989, there have been only 45 reported incidents of
flag burning. This isn't exactly an epidemic.
...Other countries have used America as an example. If "the mighty
democracy" of America limits freedom of speech, what will other
countries, less mature in their democratic processes, limit?
The real concern here is the first item. As soon as we start hacking
up the Bill of Rights to limit the freedoms our country was founded
on, we become less of a democracy.
Don't let this happen!
