antee has a history of being a good duck hunting
area. There is a National Wildlife Refuge there, so you
have to be careful not to trespass. In my younger
days, I used to hunt the upper end, full of standing
timber (dead), or the live timber swamp (Sparkleberry
Swamp) at the very upper end. I like Sparkleberry a lot,
but competition for a spot to sit can be fierce - I
got tired of having to be in place by 3:00AM to
"reserve" my spot. It's an easy place to get lost in, too.
The predominant species of ducks in the upper end
were mallards, wood ducks, and teal. On the lower end,
you could add gadwall and widgeon to the mix, plus
the usual diving birds (bluebills, etc.) I haven't
hunted there since 1989 - it became too much of a young
man's place to hunt - but I may drag my butt out of bed
and do it once or twice this year. The advantage to
Lake Murray is the fact that I have a family house on
the lake that I can crash in, get up at 5:00AM, have
the blocks out and in the blind by first light. Beats
the stew out of getting up at 1:00AM to be in the
blind by 3:00AM in Sparkleberry.

ere in Maryland, duck season opens Saturday.
Everyone get ready! Supposed to be a blue bird day so
we'll see if anything happens. Hey guy from S.C., yall
don't open til Nov.? Too bad, but i've been to Santee
Coper in Dec. before, and saw a lot <br>of ducks. Looks
like a good place.

rying to get back into duck hunting after a,
well, 8+ year hiatus. I live near a big, open lake
(Lake Murray) that has a decent resident goose
population and holds a good many ducks. I don't think it
gets much duck hunting pressure. Since the
introduction of goose hunting, I think most go after the big
birds. I still have my old 14 foot jon boat, my
Remington 870, and a dozen decoys (mallard), so I guess
I'll try 'em. We had a short teal season (no kill
reports - sorry) and our next season opens at
Thanksgiving. Any advice?

as anyone seen ducks late in the afternoon
start<br>coming in from thousands of feet making a
large<br>circle and landing next to your pit in one spot<br>and
forming a black spot that spreads out like<br>oil on the
water, with a sound that is so loud,<br>from all those
feet in the water, that a person<br>cannot carry on a
normal conversation? One of<br>the most beautiful sights
I have ever witnessed.<br>It's a shame, most people
will never experience<br>ducks coming in!

ince I was just a little tike I have been
"schooled" in the finer arts of killin mallards. The first
thing that was drilled into my head over and over again
was when "they" would be here. So here is something
you can set your watches by.. In this part of the
country we should receive our first major "flight" of
ducks on the 14 of october sounds funny but I have seen
this for years, on the 13 there is nothing , the 14
damn things are everywhere, Now if they are not here
on the 14-20 we do not receive a major migration
until Jan. so I hope all of you keep your fingers
crossed that we are swamped with birds in a couple of
weeks.

have a gentleman that works for me that has a
daughter that lives in your area. On occasion he has gone
huntin with me, the last time he went was on opening day
of 97. We( the 6 of us killed just a tad over the
limit , we bagged 42, 37 of which were mallards. anyway
he informed me early last week that he would be
making the trip to dallas later this month to paint his
daughters house. There was no real reason for me to send
this email, this story just came to mind when I seen
where you were from

ARDEN VALLEY IS ABOUT TWO HOURS EAST OF DALLAS
ON INTERSTATE 20 NEAR DALLAS. CAPE HATTERAS IS FULL
OF DUCKS BUT YOU HAVE TO BE CAREFULL NOT TO GO ON
PARK SERVICE PROPERTY I GOT IN TROUBLE FOR THAT LAST
YEAR.

'm from NC too, but never duck hunted at
Hatteras. Would love to though. Where is Garden Valley in
comparison to Dallas and Ft. Worth? I lived in Ft. Worth for
4 years at Carswell AFB, and the duck hunting was
great. I used to hunt near a little town just east of
Dallas, called Rockwall Tx. I am stationed in Maryland
now, and the duck hunting sucks around my area. The
eastern shore of Maryland is good, but too far for me to
go. See ya!

ast year was my first year, I waded into the
Indian River Lagoon opposite Black Point Wildlife Refuge
in Titusville, FL.<br><br>Shot a lot of teal, I made
a blind from 1/4" conduit pipe and some camo burlap
and threw about 12 decoys out and sat in my blind on
a 5 gallon bucket in the water, I say a lot, I got
18 teal total(thats a lot for me) with no prior duck
hunting experience, I missed a lot of the "big ducks"
because I am new to the sport.. I am sure it was my fault
because they flew off before I could get a shot
off...<br><br>I use a Browning BPS 10 gauge.... it gets out, but
I need some practice before the new season opens
up, we are in an experimental season a week long teal
and wood duck are legal to shoot, but the storms here
in Florida kinda screwed life up, and the bugs are
worse than ever!!<br><br>Chris

hunting areas than me. I've lived in Maryland at

<br>sucks. So don't make me too jelous with "bag limit"
stories this year.

ont feel like the lone ranger. I think that the
only reason that they had the season in illinois was
to move the birds in the northern part of the state
out so when the migrating flocks came in they would
not hold them up there.<br> well only 30 days till
the real thing

o me you are hunting in the perfect places. I'll
try to give you the top ten ruels of thumb when it
comes to "Drake huntin" if there are any other
questions you have you can just email me.<br>1. Most of
your ducks killed in flooded timber will be killed
from 9 am to 1 pm. The reason for this is because
before 9 they are lookin for feed most of the time this
is in fields.<br>2. Your best days should be when it
is "windy'<br>3. Ducks always work better on sunny
days<br>4. No matter what size of decoy spread you have, the
colder the weather the " tighter" the spread should be"
as it warms spread the decoys out.<br>5. THE KEY
ELEMENT TO MAKING A DUCK "PITCH" YOUR DECOY SPREAD is to
"make" him notice it. the best way to do this is to add
up to 1/3 of your decoy spread with BLACKENED 2
litre Coke Bottles they are light and it takes very
little wind to make them dance on the water.<br>6.Try to
never place your blind facing west. if possible either
east or south, ( will explain if needed)<br>7. You CAN
call to much. Sometimes less is more.<br>8.IF you are
hunting tight spots use a corse sounding plastic reed
call . For wide open feilds I recomend a raspy metal
reed call<br>9. The key is to hide and be still If you
can see a duck it is a good possibility that he can
see you<br>10.You gotta be there to killem you cant
do it running around, or sittin at home!!!!!!

c - I am hunting in Pennsylvania. Most of my
hunting grounds for duck are creeks and marsh swamps. I
have called a few mallards around and have taken a
gadwell once that really shouldn't have been there. This
will be the third year for duck hunting and you will
notice the growth in the duck population. Seed On!

ou didn't tell me what state you were from so I
thought I'd ask and see. We have an early Teal season
that opens here next week that runs for 6 days I will
try and get an accurate kill report from different
hunters to find out what is exactly going on. As far as
work goes I am in the process of brushing 2 different
blinds and doing a little work on my goose pit as well..
Well good luck and I hope to talk to you soon and
remember. Don't kill em all save some for seed&gt;
