We need representation for everybody! When only one person gets elected from a diverse district, the political minority goes without any voice. Illinois used a better electoral system for 110 years: cumulative voting rights. We elected three people from a district, not just one, so the majority party elected two people and the minority elected one. That way everyone was represented, Chicago Republicans, DuPage County Democrats and everyone else in between. For the people interested in the drive to revive cumulative voting for the Illinois House, we'll discuss strategy, organize events and figure out how to bring back two-party representation for every voter. This list will be moderated, and should be a convenient way to stay in touch with the drive to revive, as well as an easy way to talk about ways to make this happen. The state legislation to put this on the November 2004 ballot is HJRCA 22. We also work on cumulative voting rights in local elections and successfully helped enact new law that allows county boards in Illinois to give cumulative voting rights if they use multi-member districs (like DuPage, McHenry and Will counties currently use).
