Description

The Dream Quilt is a collaborative art project intended for Burning Man 2008. It represents our community... the connecting of individuals such that one is tied to another and another and another. The fabric of this community enriches our lives with love and light and laughter.

Imagine a patchwork of steel, each patch being a 12x12 inch steel sheet cut by a community member into a design of their own making with a plasma cutter. These steel patches are “stitched” together to create a cohesive whole. Five patches across and six down, the steel quilt is held taut within a steel frame that measures 6’ across and 7’ high. The steel frame rotates on two axes – it pivots at the base to be positioned to the right or left and it tilts at mid-height to lie vertical or horizontal.

With this two-axes rotation, the steel quilt can face the sun to cast a perfect shadow. At sunrise, visitors to the steel quilt position it to face the sun in a near-vertical position. As noon approaches, visitors tilt the steel quilt back to near-horizontal. During the afternoon, visitors pivot and tilt the quilt toward the setting sun.

A nearby bed, on wheels and tethered to the steel quilt, can be rolled into position to take the shadow of the quilt. At sunrise and sunset, the bed may be 35 feet from the quilt because of the angle of the sun and the shadow being cast. At mid-day, visitors can roll the bed to be virtually underneath the steel quilt where the shadow is cast. The Dream Quilt is the shadow.

Re: hoop questions
From what I understand of the use of the hoop, the concern about art cars running over it seems unnecessary. I'd put the hoop on a short enough tether, say,
