Evelyn,
Storming heaven for you kiddo. I'll be subbing for you for Paul VI - we will all
be praying. And you're not being a softie - that is what a community does - we
all take turns holding each other up. Love ya.
(sorry to send this out on DRE talk - out of office and don't have email
address.)

In March, our daughter (age 30) was diagnosed with inoperable, stage 4, lung
cancer. She has chemo every 3rd Friday.
THe wisdom I'd offer from this brief 3 months is: be good to yourself, let
others help (because sometimes they need it more than you do), and allow
God's healing Spirit to pray both for and with you: even if it's in
"groanings"!
You will be in my prayers,
Betsy Curran

Dear Nick and all,

Our parish, Assumption in South St. Louis County, as does the entire
Archdiocese of St. Louis, encourages anyone about the receive the Sacrament
of Confirmation to select their baptismal name - thus reinforcing the
one-ness of the Sacraments of Inititation.

There is a strong custom among various ethnic groups here to select the
name of the Confirmation sponsor (We also stress that if it is possible the
baptismal sponsor would be the most proper Confirmation sponsor). There is
also the tradition of selecting the name of grandparent or brother/sister
who has died. On the other side of the serious coin, we get some kids and
parents who want to select the most outlandish name they can find and isn't
the martyrology just full of them. While we certainly respect ethnic
traditions, we strive to be one, holy, catholic, and universal church.

Even among the adult RCIA candidates for Confirmation, they are most
careful to choose a Confirmation name...many do select their baptismal
name..that is a comfort to me, but everyone seems to have a good reason for
the name they select.

Evelyn in St. Louis

Prayers please as I start Chemo theraphy on Monday, July 6 for lymphoma.

I'm editing the October 2009 issue of Religion Teacher's Journal
<http://religionteac hersjournal. com> , and I've just run across the
second author who casually refers to choosing a new name for
confirmation as though that's the ordinary practice of the church.

I chose a confirmation name as a child as I'm sure most of you did. But
our experience with the Riteof Christian Initiation of Adults has given
us a renewed understanding of the unity of baptism and confirmation as
sacraments of initiation. In order to reinforce (and catechize about)
that unity, the proper confirmation name is the name one is baptized
with.

See this helpful article
<http://www.archspm. org/Worship/ WConfirm. htm#Confirmation %20Name> by
Dennis Smolarski, SJ, for a more complete exploration of the topic.

What's your experience? Does your parish encourage children to choose a
confirmation name or to celebrate their baptismal name?
