In the devastating 2009 bushfires, the Dandenong's main ridge "dodged the bullett" - a Quarry Rd Upper Ferntree Gully fire was stopped from becoming a major tragedy,

from http://www.drcbg.org.au/AboutUs.aspx

If the Quarry Road, Upper Ferntree Gully fire on the afternoon of Black Saturday had spotted into the National Park at the base of the Dandenongs, the ensuing wind change occurring soon afterwards would have seen the Dandenongs engulfed in a scenario similar to Marysville with the potential for far greater loss of life and property

Quarry Road - next to Burwood Highway - still poses a threat - last Friday, 27 January 2012,  there was a fire apparently in the precinct of Quarry Rd:

Cricketers swing into action to stop Upper Ferntree Gully grass fire

MEMBERS of the Upper Ferntree Gully cricket team were quick to report a grass fire that started near Quarry Rd.

Firefighters from Ferntree Gully and Upper Ferntree Gully attended the blaze, which was reported about 7.15pm on Friday.

Upper Ferntree Gully CFA captain Peter Smith said the fire started in vegetation-regeneration area near Quarry Rd.

"It was a grass and scrub fire at the old quarry of probably about a third of a hectare," Mr Smith said.

"Conditions were on our side but we wouldn't have wanted it any hotter or windier."

About five trucks responded to the blaze and Mr Smith praised the efforts of those who called 000.

"The people that spotted it were fantastic," Mr Smith said.

"They were local guys from the Upper Ferntree Gully Cricket Club I think, that helped us get in and assisted police."

The cause of the fire is unknown and being investigated.

...........

I missed any reports of this fire - busy with family matters away from the hills - and catching up with events - I would like to know just a little more about this Quarry Rd fire - does any reader know where abouts the fire occured? Was it on the higher slopes above the quarry or on the lower slopes on the south side where people may often walk or gather perhaps to swim in the cooling and oddly green quarry waters?

How was it that the cricketers were involved? I don't get it ?  Where was this fire? and What is being done to reduce the chance of a repeat?

I believe that events in the Quarry Road area are excluded as triggers for the early warning system operating in the One Tree Hill region of Ferny Creek - maybe it is about time that all of Quarry Rd be included in the Ferny Creek early warning system?
