The Dosewallips Road group is a place where we discuss all aspects of access to Elk Horn and Dosewallips campgrounds and the trails leading from them deeper into the Olympic National Park, the Olympic National Forest. We also welcome discussion of your experiences in the more remote areas of the Olympic Peninsula made accessible to you by the Dosewallips Road.
The road is presently blocked by a 100 yard washout ten miles away from Route 101. The Forest Services has decided to build a bypass that is routed over the bench to the north of the river. Local residents wish to restore access to the end of the road, which has been in the valley for seventy years, and serves as an economic engine for the South County. Restoring access will allow the restoration of a near-wilderness experience for disabled persons, the elderly, and the very young.
Two environmental groups have stated that they plan to appeal this decision. While allowing continued use by only the physically fit, blocking access would deny opportunity to large numbers of Americans and international visitors.
