Very nice words! Very true!
Hurray for Karen!! Long live Don Camillo and the Little World!
As for my new year's resolutions: I will visit the Little World in summer.
This time with digital equipment. This will allow me to make my own material
and put up my Don Camillo site again.

Dear Karen,
It's reassuring to see your hand back on the steering wheel. I was beginning
to wonder if perhaps we might have exhausted all discussion about Giovanni
Guareschi.
There is still plenty I would like to discuss in relation to activities of
the worthy priest. I am not religious! I have seen and heard plenty of
examples of humanity at its very best resulting from our devastating bush
fires and other disasters to endow all my faith in human nature and Earth's
wonderful recuperative powers. The Golden Rule at its best.
I look forward to the camaraderie developed among the discussion group you
have established.
Thank you for your guidance regarding Giovanni's other works. As I said, I
have read some but not all. I am looking forward to finding and reading the
rest of it. I have down loaded your references onto my desktop. I searched
Amazon and found heaps of his work, none that can be downloaded into the
Kindle yet. Project Gutenberg does not have any recorded at all.
Take it easy and keep up the good work in 2010

Hi, everyone,
Actually, for me one of the best books that I've read in my whole life is
"Corrierino delle famiglie". It has so much that delightful human flavor!!
(By the way, in my opinion, it's so far away in quality from the second one
"Vita in famiglia", which I consider a lot inferior than "Corrierino")
Another book that I consider the best I've ever read are the "Don Camillo"
series. All of them.
What I'm trying to say is that those are different books: the DC series are
excellent in their way; but radically different are the "family" series; in
fact, they are another literary genre, for they are not fiction but
"fictionalized reality" (a genre that I try to cultivate my own.)
I could synthesize my opnion stating that in fact Giovannino was a huge
great writer.
Best regards and the best wishes for this new year,
Enrique

Happy New Year!

And now Karen weighs in:
I actually quite like the family stories, at least the ones that have made
it into English. Like the DC stories, they are uneven in quality, but the
best ones are, IMO, quite charming.
That said, I think they are definitely more tied to their time than are the
DC stories. This may sound odd, given how embedded in a particular
political situation the DC stories are, but their Communism vs.
Christianity struggle is epic (it's Church vs. State, spirit vs. flesh,
conscience vs. the crowd, etc.) in a way that transcends even as it depicts
mid-20th C. Europe (not that the Little World is all that 20th-C. It's
really more of a "town that time forgot"). The family stories, on the other
hand, are about a "regular guy" adjusting to everyday life in the newly
prosperous post-War West. They're homely rather than epic, and meant to be
timely rather than once-upon-a-time-y. Unfortunately, the "modernity" they
depict is a pretty quaint-seeming thing now. Moreover, it's full of
cultural references that might be obscure to the non-Italian. In short, the
family stories have "dated" in a way that Don Camillo and his world have not.
Still, while I grant that we probably wouldn't know GG today if they were
all he'd written, I don't see the family stories (and other non-Camillo
writings) as necessarily second-tier. Their aims are more modest, but they
are often achieved.
A long time ago (it feels), I made a group of pages just devoted to GG's
non-DC writings (restricted, of course, to the things available in
English). It was housed at Geocities, which means it disappeared when that
site died in October, so I've just now re-uploaded it to some other
webspace of mine. Go here to explore:
http://www.welbourn.net/noncamillo/noncamillo.htm
I suppose I should warn you that there are embedded midis in some of the
"table of contents" pages (not on the actual story pages, though) at this
little site. I was still in my midi craze back then, but I made the players
visible and you can easily find the stop button, I think. :-)
Karen Welbourn
(whose New Year's resolution is to update her seemingly-abandoned Don
Camillo site)
Hello everybody!
GG regarded himself more as a journalist than an author. According to a
German newspaper article from 1953 (available here:
http://www.spiegel.de/spiegel/print/d-25653801.html) Guareschi had to write:
one big feature article, one political commentary of several hundred lines,
one DC story of about 300 lines and a family story of about 250 lines. This
was his workload per week. He tried to do this in four days, even sleeping
in his office in Milan so he could spend the rest of the week in his home in
the Bassa.
Another German commentary put it this way: "The DC stories are Guareschi's
Ferrari. But the family stories should be regarded as a Fiat." (I have this
article around somewhere... I think it was from the Austrian reporter and
author Dietmar Gareser but I'm not sure.)
So Jo is not that wrong when he thinks that the family stories aren't that
good - or cannot be compared to the DC stories.
Happy New Year!
Frank
Oh dear.
Looks like Jo has had a bad year.
Happy New year everyone :)

Dear Readers of Don Camillo,
I am starting the New Year off with a correction. I have been putting CC
instead of GG. My only excuse for this is poor eyesight and this bloody
Japanese laptop that kan't spell. Not only that but GG wrote stuff other
than Don Camillo on which I have been meaning to comment.
I have read some of his other works where he uses his own family problems as
the subject. I must admit I wasn't impressed with them after reading the Don
Camillo series. It seemed to me that he was struggling to come up with
something interesting and amusing.
I have seen this happening with other artists. Writers leaning heavily on
pass successes to sell mediocre stories. Elderly singers not quite reaching
top C but believing if they use enough vibrato it won't be noticed. Painters
daubing such a mess of random colour on their canvases that it defies
intelligent comment whereas previously their work was crisp, clean and to
the point. Blacksmiths adding more and more iron believing that the bigger
the mess the more interesting it becomes. I could go on but I think you
understand.
Anyway I feel better having said that. Please feel free to tear me to
pieces.
Have a wonderful New Year

Very best wishes to all for the coming year. My new year resolution will be to
re-read the Don Camillo books. At a wedding last week a lambrusco called Don
Camillo was served. I don't drink, but the others said it was very nice. So Don
Camillo lives on in little pockets here and there! - Iva

Dear Disciples of CC,

I recently bought an AmazonKindle electronic book but so far have not looked
for any of CCs works, I hope some might be out there in the ether somewhere.

Dear list members!
I wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, wherever you are in
the world!
Hope you are where you want to be and with the company you want to be.

Dear Iva,
Sorry about that. It never occurred to me that someone here might like them.
They were about $200 for the set if I remember correctly.
In fact I think I did ask around whether it was possible to get them with
English sub-titles.
Do you want me to see if I can get some for you??

Thanks Frank, Last year I bought the whole collection in DVD but it was in
Italian and German which I could not understand, so I sent them to my
Italian cousin, in Italy, who had never heard of them??? but who is fluent
in both languages, and French, with reasonable English. She never ever did
comment.

Hi again everybody!
I too think it is good to hear from this list again.
I'd put some samples of the score online but the lawyers would jump at me in
no time.
Next year, it will be GG's 101st birthday, I will go to Italy and take a lot
of fotos, even do some short video clips of Brescello and the Bassa. This
will then all be my own material and I can put it online with all the
information I have that has been dormant for four years now.

Well, the leaflet is in English. The soundtrack itself is just music. It's
not an audiobook, if that was the question.
For the German people on this list:
There is a CD out that features the voice of German comedian Konrad
Beikirchner. He reads from "Don Camillo and his flock".
Just check Ebay.
Bye,
Frank
Thank you for this information. I suppose it is in Italian?

Hello group!
The last post on this list has been some while ago. But I stumbled over an
interesting thing in the net. Apparently an Italian company named
"Digitmovies" is releasing rare Italian soundtracks. A limited edition of
Cicognini's soundtrack to "Comrade Don Camillo" a.k.a. "Il Compagno Don
Camillo" is available here:
http://www.digitmovies.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/digitmovies.woa/1/wo/PGH0rHGB1tgb3\
2txhEMrIw/7.11.1.8.1.9
or product CDDM121
I bought it and listening to it is a wonderful experience. The booklet says
that they will try to reconstruct the soundtracks to the other movies as
well and they will even try to release music from the Lionel Stander version
of Don Camillo.
Isn't that great?
Yours,
Frank

they will even try to release music from the Lionel Stander version of Don

Thank you Iva, I will keep your offer in mind. Some of the speech seems to
be in Italian. My new Macbook lap top has multi-regional options so I was
able to open and view them.
Thanks again.
