Curt,

@ the last Div. 8 meeting, somebody mentioned that this store had opened on Woodward near 9 Mile Rd. I also spoke with a fellow last Sunday, Bill, I think his name is, He said that they are open. I planned to stop by there on my next trip to Div. 8.

For what it's worth.

Anyone hear of this hobbyshop?  Did a dealer search from Exactrail’s website, but never heard of this store before.  It was in downtown Detroit and moved to Ferndale about a week ago.

Please share your thoughts on the Hartford National. Here is my brief report and
a link to my photos.

July 2 I arrived in Hartford so that I could attend the board meeting on July 3
and 4. This is a holiday weekend in the USA and the Marriott was empty. Friday
morning, we were the only people in the Marriott restaurant -- with coupons for
the non existent buffet. The manager came over and fixed this oversight,
allowing us to order anything for the buffet price.

The board met on Friday July 3 and Saturday July 4 at the Crown Plaza. The
Hartford National convention started on Sunday at noon and continued until the
next Sunday with the National Train Show.

Over 11 days, I took 350 pictures. An edited 42 slide show is available at
http://www.dervinis.com. Put your mouse at the top of the picture and you can
see the captions.

The Metro North and Nutmeg Divisions of the NER NMRA were the local host
committee and they put on a great show. They delivered on all of the usual
activities, plus they had an amazing collection of model railroads on the tours.

Please enjoy the slide show and I hope to see many of you in Milwaukee next
year. It is the 75th anniversary of the NMRA.

Regards,

Eric Dervinis

Phil Cohoon was a GTWHS member, past GTWHS BOD member and possibly a past NMRA member.  He was heavily involved in HO scale, especially modeling the GTW, had worked at the Rider’s Hobby Shops in Macomb (until it closed) and then Madison Heights (until it closed), had a DCC business distributing Digitrax, NCE, Soundtraxx and TCS after Rider’s and was retired from Ford.  Phil passed away on Sunday from cancer that had been in remission until last year.  I’ve attached a photo of Phil I took while we traced the Polly Ann (Caseville sub) back in September 2007.  Services are incomplete at this time.

RE: NMRA President and Vice President Election Results

Thank you for voting in the NMRA Elections!

ONE QUARTER (27%) of the current NMRA membership returned the ballot and this is
a record turnout. In the last five Officer elections the percentage of ballots
returned was 4%, 4%, 5%, (Three ballots in Scale Rails) 14% ( New Regulations
ballot in 2004) and 15% (Mailed Ballot in 2000).

ONE THIRD (33%) of the members voted for Eric Dervinis and Ray deBlieck.

The unofficial results* released by the NMRA Secretary are as follows:

Eric Dervinis (1,500) and Ray deBlieck (1,716) = 3,216 votes (33%)

Mike Brestel (3,478) and Allen Pollock (3,189) = 6,667 votes (67%)

The three directors were running unopposed and of course they were elected. They
are Pacific Director Peter Jensen, North America At Large Charlie Getz and
Eastern Director John Roberts.

* Election results are not official until accepted by the Board Of Directors at
the Hartford meeting. Once accepted, the board votes to destroy the ballots. A
total of 20 write-in votes were cast.

The incumbent officers and the Board of Directors have huge challenges in front
of them. Serious decisions on finances, convention, expanding the ABC, train
show, museum and the library await them in Hartford. I wish the board and
officers the best.

The campaign web site will remain on line until September at www.ericandray.org.
Please review our platform and post questions. We will reply and put the answers
on the web site.

I called Mark at home, but no one answered.  I left a message for him to call me back because I wanted to know if I needed to do anything with his account.  (He is one of my credit card processing accounts.)  He has not returned the call as of yet.

Since the sign on the door simply says "Closed" and nothing about another location, either he is just closed or this is another example of how to not run a business.  I drove by the location he has been claiming to be moving into, but there is no sign of any activity there.

I'll let you know if I hear anything.

Subject: Passing of Life Member 02645 John W. Peterson
Dear Jenny and staff,

I called the office earlier and advised my Father, John W.(Bill) Peterson, had passed away on April 17, 2009.

The NMRA and the North Central Region were an important part of his life and a great hobby providing both activities and important social interaction.  Many of his best friends were through the hobby.  They included Larry Lauer, Ed Gray, Ed Cummings, and many others.  They were part of the "Switchmen," a round robbin group in the Detroit area.  He was also a regular part of NCR Division 8.

His HO Franklin Valley Railroad was open to visitors for many regional conventions and the 1978 National.  The model railroad included a great lakes car ferry slip and an operating hump yard.

He also worked on projects with his friends to support the NMRA headquarters building fund and local library exhibits.

His interest in model railroading led to my interest in railroading and a career with Auto-Train, RF&P, Chessie System and CSX Transportation.  My O Scale layout in our garage continues to be a great activity now that I have also retired.

I have attached a copy of the obituary and a picture for your information.  We have decided to request donations to the NMRA donations instead of flowers.

Sincerely,

Sorry--webmail's not working!

To all NMRA members:

Due to a printer's error, the ballot accompanying the March Scale Rails is
invalid. HQ will be mailing a new ballot to all members at the printer's
expense. Please do not use the magazine ballot. We are sorry for the
inconvenience and confusion caused by this situation.

Please feel free to spread the word to other members on your lists.

Thank you,

Mike Brestel
