Hey everyone,

My name is Travis and I just joined this group.

I've got a question. Does anyone have any diagrams or
pictures of the procession on the feast of Corpus Christi?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Trav

for Baronius Press to reprint the one I had. I look forward to its
arrival and participating in the group.

Welcome! I hop this forum will be usefull for you.
The bi-lingual Breviary is offered for sale ebay from time to time but they always go for a lot of money and Baronius press seems to be dragging their feet.

A substantial difference between the office you're used to and the AB would be the sunday collects as the AB uses the collect from the Book of Common prayer. But it would be very easily resolved if you have a missal. You just take the sunday collects from there. Though there is nothing in the BCP collects that any Roman Catholic would consider heretical.

The AB also follows the pre-1963 calendar and rubrics.
But it can be adapted to the 1963 rubrics without too much effort.

I'm looking for a way to preserve my Anglican Breviary--now two
years old and getting a lot of use. Does anyone know where one may
purchase a leather cover for it.

What dimensions would be required? And do you know of a supplier
who sells such a thing?

The AB is similar in size to a lot of Bibles: you could look for a
Bible cover. One source is http://www.christianbook.com. Local
Family Bookstores and other Bible shops might also have a selection.
Be sure to show them your Breviary and explain it in great detail. :)

I live in Baton Rouge, a city not at all unlike Tulsa. I had the same
perceived problem, and here's what I did about it: I went down to the
nearest religious goods store (Evangelical--Catholic won't do, they
will lack any really latge selection in Bible covers--think discount
Bibles, an outlet mall is best, if available). Take the AB with you
to see if it fits. You may get a couple of odd looks, but if anyone
asks, tell them the reason it's so big is because it has a Bible in
the appendix.

You should be able to find a nice leather one in PLAIN black or brown
leather. Avoid a cover with decorations--doves, wedding rings,
cowboys and Indians kneeling in prayer, you wouldn't believe the bad
taste out there. Do not get one that fits too tightly. I am on my
second AB, which does not react well to the slip covers designed to
hold the book covers. I've found that it works best to find a case a
little large and merely zip the AB in without inserting the bookcovers
into the slips. It works well that way.

Dear Friends,

Some of you are aware that for the last year I've been working on
publishing a complete, musically notated Sarum Psalter in English. I
have now completed the project, except for getting all the colons at
the metra in the Psalms replaced with the little sign which is the
metrum sign (I did this up to about Thursday Matins, and that's all)
and except for the indices, which will be in the published version.
(Well, that's why they call it a draft.)

Otherwise the files allow one to sing and serve the Sarum Divine
Office except for the propers, many of which are given in English on
the Occidentalis site:

Hi folks. I have my copy of the Breviary and I've gotten familiar
with Compline, but that's about as far as I've been able to go. I'm
a little ashamed to say it in public, but the complexity appears to
be a bit much for me (a layperson, and a rank beginner) to figure
out. I don't want to give up, though. I've gone through all the
lessons on Mr. Lula's website, and they've helped, but it's gotten to
the point that I think I need some additional resources.

Here's what I think would help me: a sample step-by-step progression
through an entire service, say Matins, Lauds, or Vespers; with the
text written out and page numbers provided. Then accompanied
by "Meta-Rubrics" that tell you why each particular section is being
favored over another. If something like this were available and
posted on the web as a "Sample Office," it would be fantastic.

(Getting grandiose here...) Ideally, there would be three or four
sample offices: one feria, one simple feast of a saint, one feast of
a season, and one horribly complex clashing day where you have to
take out your slide rule, an Excel spreadsheet, and an astrolabe to
sort out the celebrations.

Does something like this exist? If so, please point me in the right
direction. If not, then when I finally master the Office I would
like to create such a document as a gift to fellow confused beginners
who come after me. (But that, or course, will take quite some time.)

Thanks for your help. Peace.

Dear Will

I’ll see if I can produce some sample offices and upload them to the file section, and maybe some other members of the list will as well.

In the meantime, may I suggest a couple of things?

1) Don’t get too worried about saying the office perfectly at first. Just say it as best you can, and you will quickly pick up the main points.

2) Most of the complexity comes from the interaction between the Temporal Cycle (Easter, Sundays, Christmas, etc. in Section C) and the Sanctoral Cycle (the Saints’ Days in Section E). You can simplify things at a stroke by ignoring Section E altogether until you have gained confidence.

Best wishes,

Mark

Mark Forster

sort out the celebrations.

Does something like this exist? If so, please point me in the right
direction. If not, then when I finally master the Office I would
like to create such a document as a gift to fellow confused beginners
who come after me. (But that, or course, will take quite some time.)

Thanks for your help. Peace.

If it would be helpful, at www.anglicandevotionalsociety.com under podcasts and audio files you can find a mp3 of Matins and Lauds from All Souls Day last year.

(Getting grandiose here...) Ideally, there would be three or four
sample offices: one feria, one simple feast of a saint, one feast of
a season, and one horribly complex clashing day where you have to
take out your slide rule, an Excel spreadsheet, and an astrolabe to
sort out the celebrations.

direction. If not, then when I finally master the Office I would

Will,

Is this at all what you had in mind? Here is my rationale and
thinking through of I Vespers for Saint Matthew, beginning to end. I
intended to hammer out something for all of the offices, but when I
saw the length of this one, I though I would check to see if I'm being
at all helpful to the question being asked.

Hope this helps,
Jason

The Basics
----------

Look up the month of September in the Kalendar on page xxi. For
September 21, you will find the listing:

"e 21 ST. MATTHEW, AP., EV., d.2."

This listing tells you a few things. The captial letters should at first
indicate that this day is of particlar importance. The abbreviation "d.2."
confirms this: today is a Double ("d.") of the Second class ("2.").

NB: For comparision, a "Double of the II class" is equivalent to a "Second
class Feast" in the 1962 Missal, a "Major Feast" in the 1979 Book of Common
Prayer, or a "Feast" in the current Roman Missal. These feasts rank above
"Greater Doubles," but below "Doubles of the I class."

Because this feast is of double rite, take note of the following:
1. All antiphons are said in full, both before and after the psalms.
2. The preces will not be said at any office today.
3. The common commemoration will not be said at any office today.
4. There are two offices of Vespers for this day, on the 20th and the 21st.
5. The office of Matins will have three nocturns.

First Vespers
-------------

Look up the feast of Saint Matthew on page E435. I use my brown ribbon
to keep track of the Sanctoral Cycle.

You will see the name, rite and rank of the feast spelled out from its
abbreviation in the Kalendar: "ST. MATTHEW THE APOSTLE AND EVANGELIST
Double of II Class."

There are three things to note about what you see here:
1. The rubric "All from Common 3, except." Most of what you read will not
be found on this page, but in the Common material on page F24.

2. The rubric "At both Vespers, (but not Lauds) Hymn Annue Christe from
Common 2, with second stanza." This is one of the exceptions to the rubric
above.

3. There is a Collect for Saint Matthew given that will be used in I Vespers.

Marking page E435 with a ribbon, turn to page F24 to find the material for
Common 3. I mark the Common material with by green ribbon. Look in the left
column where "AT I VESPERS" begins.

The heavily abbreviated rubric here reads, "Pss. of Vesp. 3. Ants. and Chap.
from Lauds below." By "Pss. of Vesp. 3," the editor is cluing you in to the
psalms to be recited during the office. Many feasts, such as St. Matthew,
use the psalms from Sunday, no matter what the day of the week. I mark the
Sunday psalms on page B27 with my white ribbon.

The rubric "Pss. of Vesp. 3" further indicates that the last psalm is not
the typical final psalm for Sunday, but that you should substitute Psalm 117
instead. Look on page B31 for this psalm. The rubric here confirms what the
rubric on page F24 read.

The remainder of the rubric on page F24 read "Ants. and Chap. from Lauds
below." The portion for "Lauds below" follows on page F28. Where you see
"AT LAUDS" at the bottom of the page, there are five antiphons, to be used
with the five psalms on page B27. The "Chap. from Lauds" is Ezekiel 1:10,
also found here.

So far you have found the Psalms, their Antiphons and the Chapter. From
page E435, we remember that the Hymn is taken from Common 2. On page F8 you
can find Common 2 and the Hymn Annue Christe, as directed. I typically
mark these small exceptions with my finger.

The only remaining proper material is the Antiphon on the Magnificat which
is found, as directed, in Common 3 on page F24.

SO, the office can be summarized like so:
1. Begin the Office of Vespers on page A40 (red ribbon).

2. Continue with the Psalms on page B27 (white ribbon).
2.a. The antiphons are found on page F28 (under the green ribbon).

2.b. Just in case this is confusing:
2.b.1. Say the antiphon "Beloved of God and men..." on Psalm 110.
2.b.2. Say the antiphon "They gave beauty..." on Psalm 111.
2.b.3. Say the antiphon "With their heart..." on Psalm 112.
2.b.4. Say the antiphon "The Lord filled them..." on Psalm 113.
2.b.5. Say the antiphone "I will direct their work..." on Psalm 117 (page B31).

3. Continue with the Chapter on page F28 (Ezekiel 1:10).

4. Continue with the Hymn Annue Christe on page F8 (marked with a finger).
4.a. This exception came from the Proper on page E435.
4.b. Insert the verse "For Matthew's twofold-gift..." on page E435 as directed.

5. Continue with the Magnificat as in the ordinary (page A43, red ribbon).
5.a. Use the antiphon from Common 3, page F24, "In the midst of the throne..."

6. Omit the preces, because today is of double rite.

7. Continue with the Collect on page E435 (brown ribbon).

(If someone wants to explain commemorations they may. I do not use the
Universal Kalendar.)

8. Omit any Common Commemorations, because today is of double rite.

9. Say the Closing Versicles as directed on A45.

Here endeth the Lesson.

Hi Will:

My Breviary spent several years on the shelf before I pulled it down and wrestled it into submission (or perhaps it wrestled me...)

It does seem impossible when one first starts out, but so is riding a bike. I think the advice from Mark about simply working with the weekly cycle for a bit is sound advice. Pick up whatever day it happens to be, and start with Lauds or Vespers. Read the rubrics for whichever service you're going to start with as throughly as posible. Using Vespers as an example, set a ribbon at A40 (the Ordinary of Vespers) and one at that day's Vespers from section B. Then, give it a whirl. Note the basic divisions of the service: Opening prayers, Psalms with antiphons, Little Chapter, Hymn, Versicle and Response, Antiphon on Magnificat, Magnificat, The preces (which you can either say or not....we're not in a penitential season, so we're not saying them right now...except for the Ember Days, but I'd not worry with that just now), the collect (from whichever Sunday after Trinity we're observing) and the closing versicles....

Just work through this for a week or so. Then add Lauds, if you'd like, or try expanding Vespers to include the commemorations of the saints. It takes lots of patience, but I promise it does make sense ...eventually. Unfortunately it makes sense in "kairos" rather than "kronos." It's God's time. The purity of your intent is what matters. Offer your prayers up, no matter how halting they may first appear and they will be blessed.

Benedicamus Domino!

The use of the ANGLICAN BREVIARY as well as other resources
has immensely enriched my life. Does anyone know of a source
for HYMNS ANCIENT AND MODERN: A PLAINSONG HYMNAL? I have a
photo copy but would like to purchase a bound copy.

I am currently attending a Western Rite Orthodox Mission where
the old hymns are used from the breviary and Gregorian chant
for liturgy and psalms.

The following may be of interest from another group:

HYMN: O Lux Beata Trinitas

[3 extra verses]

Jam noctis tempus advenit:
Quietam noctem tribue;
Diluculo nos respice
De caelo, Clementissime!

Now night-time draweth nigh to us,
Grant us a calm and peaceful night,
And at the dawn gaze down on us
From heaven, O All-Merciful.

Tu, Xpiste, solve vincula,
Absterge nostra vitia:
Relaxa prius crimina,
Et indulge facinora.

O Christ, from fetters set us free,
From sinful ways now wash us clean,
Before all else absolve our sins,
Forgive the evil we have done.

Oramus ut exaudias:
Precamur ut subvenias;
Xpiste Ihesu, omnipotens,
Tu nos a malo libera.

We entreat Thee: Give ear to us,
We pray to Thee to rescue us;
Christ Jesus the Almighty One,
Deliv'r us from the evil one.

Then the usual doxology stanza.
