There is a new service on the block called GeneaPress.

GeneaPress is a communal effort by the genealogy and family history blogging community to manage the large number of press releases received from genealogy vendors and organizations. The goal is to create a repository where bloggers can link to the latest news about the genealogy industry.

This initiative was conceived at Rootstech 2011 by Thomas MacEntee with input from several of the geneabloggers and vendors present.

There is a GeneaPress widget that can be placed in the sidebar of a blog.  I’ve included the widget on the sidebar of the AFHS blog.  Look to the lower right to get all of the latest genealogy press releases.

I purchased a new picture scanner at Rootstech and love it!  It is called the Flip-Pal and is perfect for the mobile genealogist. Other geneabloggers have been raving about it for a few months so I thought I would give it a try.

The Flip-Pal is designed for quickly scanning small pictures but it can easily stitch together large photos. It is battery operated and perfect to take to mom's house to scan pictures.  I've used it for postcards, 4x6 photos and bigger photos.

I just did a blog post on it if you are interested in taking a look.

Dear Archival Colleagues,

[A] letter has been sent on behalf of the Association of Canadian Archivists (ACA) to the Ambassador of the Republic of Hungary concerning the Hungarian government’s decision to introduce legislation that would permit the removal and destruction of Hungarian communist secret police, interior ministry, and state security files currently held at the Historical Archives of the Hungarian State Security in Budapest. Hungary's parliamentary secretary for justice announced that his government believes that a democratic state cannot "preserve the immoral documents of an immoral regime."

Hi folks,

My apologies for the previous message.

I accidentally hit the send button on my mobile phone while I was away. It
was a message I started to reply to and then decided to reply only to Linda.
Getting used to the replacement and upgraded phone and I didn't realize the
original was still in my drafts. Then I meant to hit delete and hit send
instead. Think all thumbs! So my apologies, though I wish I was still in
Vancouver. Although there was a huge snowstorm, it was not much below zero
and was 7 above today with the snow melting fast, warm sun during my walk
and birds singing.

Flight was three hours delayed and I just walked into the house. So thought
I should send off this email to apologize.

Join us for this FREE webinar sponsored by the Southern California Genealogical Society.  The Jamboree Extension Series allows genealogists from around the world to attend the types of sessions that will be offered at the 42nd Annual Southern California Genealogy Jamboree in Burbank, California, on June 10-12, 2011.  The Jamboree Extension Series is offered as a service to the genealogical community.

Did you know that the over-55 crowd is the fastest growing group of Facebook users? Did you know that Twitter is not the domain of the much younger texting crowd but is used by an older, more savvy group of people? Did you ever wonder how and if these programs, along with others such as blogs and wikis, can be used to help genealogists? Wonder no more as we explore what makes up the oft-mystifying term “social networking” and how each program is currently being used by genealogists and family historians of all ages.

Our presenter, Thomas MacEntee, is a professional genealogist specializing in the use of technology and social media to improve genealogical research and as a means of interacting with others in the family history community. Utilizing over 25 years of experience in the information technology field, Thomas writes and lectures on the many ways in which blogs, Facebook and Twitter can be leveraged to add new dimensions to the genealogy experience. As the creator of GeneaBloggers.com, he has organized and engaged a community of over 1,400 bloggers to document their own journeys in the search for ancestors.

Jamboree Extension Series presentations will be scheduled on the first Saturday and third Wednesday of each month.  Saturday sessions will be held at 10am Pacific time / 1pm Eastern time; Wednesday sessions will be scheduled 6pm Pacific time / 9pm Eastern time.  Jamboree Extension Sessions will be archived and available to SCGS members approximately three days following the webinar.  Membership information can be found at www.scgsgenealogy.com.  Review the list of upcoming SCGS webinars, or check out the GeneaWebinars provided by all sponsors.

Hi all,
I just had a comment on my blog asking for help finding a lady's g-grandmother.  Does anyone have suggestions for Tracey?

Do you have any suggestions of where I should go to find information about my great-grandmother?  We have very little information about her - just her name - Jenny Gustafson and that she came from Stockholm, Sweden to Canada in 1912-1913.  My grandfather, George Edward Gustafson was born in Moose Jaw Saskatchewan on October 7, 1913.  He believes he may have been conceived during the voyage.  Jenny placed him in the care of the Children's Aid Society.  However, after a week or so, she removed him from the Society and gave him to Mr. and Mrs. David and Maria Rhode. (They had just recently lost their son David in a flu or diptheria epidemic, and renamed my grandfather David Rhode).  Mr. Rhode worked for the Robin Hood Flour Mill, while Mrs. Rhode ran a boarding house and was also a midwife.  I believe that is the connection between her and Jenny.  Apparently Jenny came around for a few weeks, then disappeared completely.  There is rumor that she may have died in the flu epidemic of 1918.  However, I have researched many cemetaries in and around Moose Jaw, and have no sign of her name.  I have had no luck searching census records either.  I was hoping I might find her name on a passenger list, but have no idea where to start looking.  Any ideas?

Your help is much appreciated!

Sincerely,

Tracey Guerrier

THANKS!

Hello -

I can see an immigration record for a Jenny Gustafson in March 1911 on the Ancestry site.  She was 22 and single and from Sweden.  She arrived in Halifax on the Megantic but her destination was Saskatchewan.

Then there is a record for a Jenny Gustafson in the 1911 census.  She was 22 and living in Saltcoats, SK.  From the Automated Genealogy 1911 census index, this is the description of where she was living:
Township 20 in range 3 west of the 2nd M.

She was living with John and Ida Christina Apslund and was listed as their niece.  The original census record indicates that she had arrived in 1911.  This is a good fit for the Jenny who arrived in 1911 on the Megantic.

Hi Folks:

Below is a message which I am asking you to consider and to circulate to as many of your friends and family in Alberta as you wish. The surgery will take place in Edmonton so anyone living there might qualify as well.

If you have ever thought of returning a 'favour' to the world that has given you so much, here is a life-giving opportunity. We have a young, newly-married professional in Calgary who is an excellent candidate for an immediate live-donor liver transplant.  The doctors give him about a year to have this urgent surgery. You, a loved-one or a friend (under age 55 and a non-smoker) might qualify as a donor. If you would like to explore this opportunity please contact his wife, Janet McLeod at home (403-287-1747), cell (403-826-2130), work (403-218-4134) or at Janet.HarrisMcLeod@...

Your most serious consideration of this urgency will forever be remembered.

Thank you for your help.

Who was Mr. C.A. Van Scey, Winnipeg, MB? Many Hungarians and other East Europeans upon immigration gave him as their destination contact on a 1928 passenger list. The immigrants were listed as farm labourers (occupation #108).

Next year I hope to get the AFHS blog on that list.  With your help we'll do it.  If you have any genealogy articles or volunteers you wish to profile, or any other great content for the blog, please send it my way.
Thanks again!

Does anyone have experience with DNA testing labs - I'm looking to set up testing for a one-name group. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Hi Ann,
This is good timing.  I have been thinking about starting a DNA SIG and talking to several members who have tested to see who is interested.

I have experience with two testing labs, Family Tree DNA (FTDNA) and 23andme.  I recommend you go with the company with the largest database of people previously tested.  In this case, that would be FTDNA.  Many of the big surname groups are there.

Hi everyone,

The April issue is in the printers’ hands for printing and distribution and you should receive it in the next couple of weeks. Below, I give the TOC (table of contents) for that issue. But an editor’s work is never done! So the planning for the July issue is underway. The theme is 30 Years of History.

AFHS is now 30 years old, so if you have some particular memories of how AFHS has grown or how genealogy has changed, please send it to us. You don’t have to write an entire article. Send us your reflections and we can incorporate the several or many we receive into an article. Some ideas would be DNA, which we hadn’t even heard of 30 years ago. Technology too has undergone massive changes in the past 30 years. Society has changed. Media and social media is beyond what we could have imagined 30 years ago. We don’t mean we want a repetition of the articles in Tweets and Tools, but T&T was looking forward. Now we are looking back. Weren’t a member, doing genealogy or even around 30 years ago and can’t say what it was like back in the day? Tell us what you look forward to in the future. What help do you want and what are your expectations of AFHS and genealogy in the future?

Of course, there are still the regular columns, such as Surname Connections, which is your chance to try to find relatives or people who might be able to help you track down your elusive ancestors. Also we are always happy to receive articles on Serendipity – the unexpected boost to your quest from a source you never expected or that you encountered by chance while looking for something else. Please read the questions in Ask the Expert and send us (the editors) the answers. Then ask us your questions on anything genealogy related that you would like answered. Don’t forget we want to hear about your SIG and other interests related to ethnic or unique roots. Advise us of events coming up or interesting things you have learned from conferences, reading or talking to others.

If you cannot write an article, please tell us who can.

Meanwhile, here is the TOC for
