Hi all,
Here is an interesting article by Thomas MacEntee on genealogy blogging.  It explains what blogging is and why we might want to have a genealogy blog.

I have a picture of my father and the rest of the crew of a Lancaster bomber in
which he flew during WWII.
The aircraft is positioned such that the wing interferes with the ability to see
the identification markings on the fuselage.
Does anyone know of a site on which the picture could be posted to see if anyone
can identify the crew members and perhaps the aircraft?
I suspect that it would need to be a WWII-related airforce or aircraft site, or
having to do with WWII Bomber Command.

You could also try the Aero Space Museum Association in Calgary and the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum in Hamilton, ON www.warplanes.com   These places have had volunteers who flew them.  Do you know where your dad was based?

Hi Gary:

Do you have his regimental number (and name, of course)?

If so I would suggest that you draw his military service file from Archives Canada and see what it reveals.

If that isn't appropriate please contact me and we'll go with what information you do have.
It shouldn't be that difficult.

Cheers

BILL

Hi,
Have you heard of QR codes for genealogy?

They are similar to bar codes that can be read by one's cell phone.  They are catching on all over the world and are even being used in Japan on tombstones.  In Japan, QR codes allow you to capture the information about the deceased onto your cell phone by scanning.  They are also used on monuments and in libraries and museums to pass information to the visitor.

Here are two great articles by Thomas MacEntee that talk about QR codes and how they can and could be used for genealogy.

Part 1 (explains what QR codes are)
Part 2 (explains their use for genealogy)

Thomas MacEntee will be speaking at an AFHS special event in October.

Hi everyone,

I received my copy of the mailed Chinook today. I was shocked to see pages 2
and 31 with the boxes all over the page. When we reviewed the printed proof,
there was no problem with those pages. We had just received another
compliment on our journal from another genealogy society. I hate to think
the journal has gone out looking like this. The Chair of Periodicals and I
will deal with the printers on this issue. I just wanted you to know this is
not due to the fault of any of the Periodicals Committee and is not
acceptable from our printers.

The workshop will be led by artist Daena Diduck (of whom I have heard

Hi Folks:

It is indeed a pleasure to welcome Joan Miller to our Public Relations Team (Committee). She brings with her considerable talent and experience for the benefit of our Society. Although Joan has been a member of AFHS for only 2 years, she has been pursuing genealogy for some 20 years and enjoys sharing her research with others. Joan is a published author with scientific, genealogy and photo journalism credits. She enjoys writing primarily about Canadian genealogy resources, news and views. Joan regularly offers summaries of genealogy talks and meetings she attends through her genealogy BLOG - www.luxegen.ca  We would be delighted to see other ladies volunteer to join our PR Team. There's so much we could do to raise the profile of our Society if we just had the support.

My mother was a Miller from Kilmarnock, and my grandmother a Miller from Muckairn. I have done some research on them. So I have an odd quesion.

When I was a child, my mother sang a lullaby to me  in Gaelic. I remember it began wih words that sounded like Hayla, Hayle, Shayla.
Yes later, I heard it on a recording, but lost it. The tune was he same, and the opening words sounded the same. It seems it was a highland work song for use as they soaked the wool, then pounded it dry on a table.

It there a possibility anyone in you circle would know something of this?

I can’t help with the Gaelic connection, but it reminds me of a scouting campfire song we used to do with the boys.  For more information on that, go to:

The English/Welsh SIG next meets on Saturday, April 17th 10 a.m. at the AFHS library.  Our topic is 'Wills & Maps' and examples of these from your research will be welcome.  We will also discuss new websites, research sucesses, problems etc.  Remember it's a good day to be at the AFHS because the library opens at noon.

The SIG is coming to the end of its program - the topic for May is "British folk lore and comedy" - perhaps you have some recordings of comedians you could bring along or long-remembered jokes to tell.  For June, if there's any interest, we propose meeting at the tea house at the Reader Rock Gardens near the Stampede Grounds for a stroll in the flowers!
