Hello,

My Name is Margo Savage, I'm a third year Canadian Studies student at the
University of Calgary. This year I am in a class about Canadian Heritage,
and as part of my course requirement I am to get involved with a Heritage
project in the City.

In my research about different sites and projects around the city, I came
across the website for the ALberta Family Histories aociety, and became
interested.

I am interested to know if there are any opportunities for volunteer
within your organization, whether it be for a specific event or otherwise,
that could be helpful in my project, as well as beneficial to your
organization.

Sorry to take up your time, but thank you for any help you may be able to
offer me. You can contact me either by email, or by telephone at
403-813-8108.

Thank you.
Margo Savage

Hello,

Just to let you know, I have just left a voice message for Margo. I have
told her about our monthly meeting tomorrow and gaver her the address. I
told her if she could make it we could discuss ways she can help with the
society. I also mentioned the special event on the 24th of this month.

Hi Folks:

We are less than three weeks away from our next major genealogy event -
The Eastern European Seminar.

Even if you aren't personally interested in that area of your past generations you can help our AFHS in ensuring that the Calgary community is made aware.

All branches of the Calgary Public Library have received a copy of the very attractive poster and it should be on display on their bulletin boards now.

You can see the poster at     http://www.family-roots.ca/

If you are near a CPL branch in the next few days please stop in and look for the poster. If it is not on display please speak with the manager. If it cannot be found, please ask that Christine Hayes at the Main Branch be contacted for another copy.

You may wish to print off a copy as well and see if it can be posted at any of your favourite haunts
(e.g., church, social club, pub - wherever the public may see it).

Thanks for supporting our AFHS.

Sorry for the late posting.

The program for tonight’s meeting is Nancy Millar presenting Once Upon a Wedding.  We have had a lot of requests for Nancy’s presentations and this one promises to  be very interesting.  She is going to show pictures and tell stories of weddings in Western Canada from 1860 to 1945.  Why weddings? Because weddings contain our history.  As she says in the introduction to her book the “stories …begin with a wedding but don’t stay there.”  Join us tonight at River Park Church, 3818 - 14A Street SW, to hear and see this wonderful presentation.  Nancy will also be selling copies of her book in the lobby.  We hope to see you there.

I have a neighbour that has a briefcase full of paper work, including a slide rule -  from getting his pilots license perhaps in the 60s. His family doesnt want it, and I wondered if there was any interest in this before it hits the recycling bin.

Hello all,

Just to let you know, that there has been a change to the area where we are going to be having our special event on Saturday, October 24th.  There was a mix up on the church's part and we are having our event in the fellowship room, which is downstairs.   The church is also going to set up the chairs for us instead of us doing this. They will also set up the room for the lunch hour.

The church has said that we can move upstairs at noon, but it has been decided to use the fellowship all day, as we are having displays set up and we do not want to take them apart and move them upstairs.

Hope to see you all there.  Please bring a friend and also a bagged lunch.

The Program Committee is planning a "Bring and Brag, Show and Tell" session for the meeting on January 4, 2010. Has Aunt Sally given you a special treasure because you are the family historian? Have you inherited something unique? What priceless article do you have in your possession that makes the rest of the family jealous? We'd like YOU to tell us about it.

These items will not be put on display or passed around - unless you wish to do so. The idea is for you to show your article to the group and tell the story that goes with it.

Please consider submitting a photograph to be projected, especially if your item is too big or fragile to bring to the meeting. All you need to do is send a digital photograph to me and I will make sure the image is included in the PowerPoint presentation for the evening.

So, start thinking about what you can show and tell, then send an email to me so I can organize the presentation.

Subject: MORE TIME-10th Anniversary

Hello Tara,

A very large number of phone calls and e-mails have been received requesting information regarding the '10% discount' for registration fees in celebration of our 10th Anniversary of providing Genealogy Education Online. This was announced on October 4 and was to end tonight, October 14th. We are extending the registration fee discount of 10% until end of day on Wednesday(October 21) to enable us to complete all requests, to speak with those who could not reach us during the holiday weekend, or any other situation. Again, if you wish, you may call us toll free at 1-800-580-0165, or send an e-mail to: admin@....

Below, you will find a copy of the e-mail sent out last week... If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact us...

Louise St Denis
National Institute for Genealogical Studies

***************************

Today, Sunday October 4th we are celebrating! It's our 10th anniversary... 10 years ago today on Monday, October 4th, 1999 we started our first online course, 'Methodology-Part 1: Getting Started', for the first time. Tomorrow, it will start for the 121st time! WOW! How time flies...

We now offer approximately 150 online courses prepared by over 50 instructors. Over 50,000 registrations have been received from all over the world.

We would like to thank all our Program Directors, our Instructors and our Consultants for preparing such valuable and informative educational materials; thank you for sharing your wealth of knowledge.

Thank you to our staff and volunteers, both present and past. Many from 10 years ago are still with us! Your hard work and your commitment has made our course delivery systems and our student support services the best they could be.

Thank you to the University of Toronto, Faculty of Information, Professional Learning Centre who, years ago, had the confidence to partner with us in providing this program. For its second decade, our program has now moved to a a different faculty within the U of T: our affiliation is now with the Continuing Education department of the University of St. Michael's College in the University of Toronto.

And finally, thanks to all our students and our supporters --- you have made all the hard work worthwhile. You have been there through the good times and through the growing pains (terrible spam and e-mail problems is the first that comes to mind!). Meeting you in person at conferences and at graduations has been terrific. Your commitment to your studies has always given us the encouragement and the confidence to continue finding new topics to offer...

--------------------

PLEASE CELEBRATE WITH US:
All registrations received from today, October 4th for 10 days through October 14th will receive 10% off. This includes all packages of courses as well as single courses. Remember, for all  registrations, single courses or packages, you choose the date you will start the course(s).

To received this 10% discount, process your registration online at www.genealogicalstudies.com for the regular registration fee. You will receive a receipt from MiraPay for your payment. Please forward the e-mail to us requesting your 10% discount (admin@...). We will refund your credit card for the 10%.

If you do not receive the confirmation e-mail or prefer to register by telephone, please call us toll free at 1-800-580-0165.

If you were considering completing your Certificate program, this would be a great time to call our office to see what would be the most economical combination of packages to achieve your objectives. For those who are finding their financial situation a little tight these days, speak to us about our 'No Interest, No Service Charge', payment plan.

--------------------
Throughout the year, we will have numerous promotions for products and draws.

DRAW OCTOBER 31 for a free course (for past or current students):
From all e-mails received. Let us know how the courses have helped you in your research. Your comments will be added to our 10th Anniversary Memories Book.

DRAW OCTOBER 31 for a free course (for someone who has not taken a course):
From all e-mails received. Let us know how you believe our program has helped provide genealogy education OR let us know which course you believe would be the most useful for you in your research and why.

MONTHLY DRAWS for a package of 6 courses (Value $500)
From all registrations received each month a lucky winner will received a package of 6 courses. If you register a package of courses, your name will be entered in the draw for each course in that package (a package of 9 courses gives you 9 chances to win).

OCTOBER 4, 2010 DRAW for a Certificate package of 40 course (value approximate $4,000)
From all registrations received from October 4, 2009 to October 4, 2010. If during this period you register a package of courses, your name will be entered in the draw for each course in that package. If you have registered more than 10 courses during this period, you will receive the cash value towards previously registered courses.

FOR SOCIETIES & LIBRARIES:
Are you a member of a society? Work or volunteer in a library? Write an article for your Society or Library's newsletter about the National Institute for Genealogical Studies (or ask us to provide the article!). Send the published newsletter to us at The National Institute, 92 Ashbury Blvd, Ajax Ontario L1Z 1N1. We will send your Society or Library a Gift Certificate for a package of 6 courses (Value $500) to use as they wish. We would suggest it be used as a fund raiser --- sell tickets for draw overlapping several monthly meetings or events and hold the draw at a special function!

Offer to give a 45 minutes to an hour presentation for your Society members or Library patrons. We will even provide the PowerPoint presentation. Each attendee will receive a free Methodology-Part 1: Getting Started course!

--------------------

As indicated earlier, we will be celebrating our 10th anniversary throughout this year. We will also have special promotions on other products. To start this off, we have packaged 3 products that genealogists should carry with them to properly cite their sources:

From now to October 14th we are packaging three items together for $25.95US or $29.95Cnd (a savings of 20% if purchased individually):
CITE YOUR SOURCES PACKAGE
Evidence! Citation & Analysis for the Family Historian
QuickSheet: Citing Online Historical Resources
QuickSheet: Citing Ancestry.com Databases & Images
all by Elizabeth Shown Mills

OR

Evidence Explained: Citing History Sources from Artifacts to Cyberspace for $39.95US or $45.95Cnd (also a savings of 20%).

These four items are excellent tools to ensure you are citing all your sources properly

To order these items, go to our store (www.genealogystore.com), under the menu Other Products, click on INSTITUTE MATERIALS, click on ELECTIVE COURSES, click on SUPPLIES: OPTIONAL. Next choose the appropriate product above and complete the order. If you have any difficulties call us, toll free, at 1-800-580-0165.

--------------------

RESEARCH ACADEMY PROGRAM

Thank you to all those who have responded to our request of interest in our guided research trips. We will shortly be letting you know the schedule for next year's Research Academies. If someone has not responded yet, here is the message sent out earlier. You still have time to have your voice heard.

In the last several years, we have had Research Academy Programs in various cities. To ensure quality time with our instructor(s) during the Research Academy, a small group of individuals is required, therefore space is limited. We are planning our activities for the for 2010. If you are interested in joining our instructors on a guided research trip, please let us know where you would like to go. This could be to Salt Lake City, Washington, Ottawa, Toronto, Fort Wayne or any other city where important repositories are found, or it could be to another country such as Ireland, England, Germany, etc. Simply send us an e-mail to admin@... to let us know where you would like a guided research program. If we have a sufficient number of students, your suggestion may find itself on the schedule! (No obligations naturally on your part.)

---------------------------

NEW COURSES PLANNED

Many new courses are planned to start in 2009/2010. We are concentrating on very specialized courses to help you with the Analysis and SkillBuilding aspects of your research. Look for announcements as we get closer to offering these courses.

If you have an interest in a topic we do not offer, please let us know. If you are an instructor with a specific area of expertise we do not covered, please contact us. Our toll free number is 1-800-580-0165.

Please see this from the FFHS:
The National Library of Wales has good news for family historians, social historians … and the inquisitive! Over 190,000 Welsh wills (some 800,000 pages) have been digitised and are now available on the Library’s website or direct on their online catalogue and are free to view.

Wills which were proved in the Welsh ecclesiastical courts before the introduction of Civil Probate on 11 January 1858 have long been deposited at The National Library of Wales. An online index and an opportunity to view digital images of these wills within the Library building has been available for some time, however, remote users can also view the digital images following the release of a new site on 16 October.

Amongst the collection is the will of Twm Siôn Cati alias Thomas Johnes, Fountaine Gate, Caron (SD1609-20), this year being the 400th anniversary of his death. The will of Howell Harris, the famous Welsh religious reformer can also be seen (BR1773-51).

As well as being a fabulous source of information the National Library’s online wills offer the ability to view all 193,000 wills free of charge, a service few other similar institutions are able to offer. Whilst most institutions charge readers to view their documents, the Library only charges for providing copies of them.

Hi Ann & dist gen
I only have one family in Wales but thought I would check out the link below......it comes up as "not valid" so not sure if it worked for anyone else.  I  tried to google "Welsh wills" and came up with the online index at http://cat.llgc.org.uk/cgi-bin/gw/chameleon?skin=profeb&lng=en
Hope that works.

Hi folks,

I am still looking for war stories or resources. In particular, I am
interested in an article on "Women Who Went to War."

Also looking for Serendipity, war related or not. Of course, surname
connections and all other types of entries are getting a little low in the
stockpile. So write away right away! October and January issues of Chinook

Subject: MORE TIME-10th Anniversary

Hello Xenia,

A very large number of phone calls and e-mails have been received requesting
information regarding the '10% discount' for registration fees in
celebration of our 10th Anniversary of providing Genealogy Education Online.
This was announced on October 4 and was to end tonight, October 14th. We are
extending the registration fee discount of 10% until end of day on
Wednesday(October 21) to enable us to complete all requests, to speak with
those who could not reach us during the holiday weekend, or any other
situation. Again, if you wish, you may call us toll free at 1-800-580-0165,
or send an e-mail to: admin@....

Below, you will find a copy of the e-mail sent out last week... If you have
any questions, do not hesitate to contact us...

Louise St Denis
National Institute for Genealogical Studies

***************************

Today, Sunday October 4th we are celebrating! It's our 10th anniversary...
10 years ago today on Monday, October 4th, 1999 we started our first online
course, 'Methodology-Part 1: Getting Started', for the first time. Tomorrow,
it will start for the 121st time! WOW! How time flies...

We now offer approximately 150 online courses prepared by over 50
instructors. Over 50,000 registrations have been received from all over the
world.

We would like to thank all our Program Directors, our Instructors and our
Consultants for preparing such valuable and informative educational
materials; thank you for sharing your wealth of knowledge.

Thank you to our staff and volunteers, both present and past. Many from 10
years ago are still with us! Your hard work and your commitment has made our
course delivery systems and our student support services the best they could
be.

Thank you to the University of Toronto, Faculty of Information, Professional
Learning Centre who, years ago, had the confidence to partner with us in
providing this program. For its second decade, our program has now moved to
a a different faculty within the U of T: our affiliation is now with the
Continuing Education department of the University of St. Michael's College
in the University of Toronto.

And finally, thanks to all our students and our supporters --- you have made
all the hard work worthwhile. You have been there through the good times and
through the growing pains (terrible spam and e-mail problems is the first
that comes to mind!). Meeting you in person at conferences and at
graduations has been terrific. Your commitment to your studies has always
given us the encouragement and the confidence to continue finding new topics
to offer...

--------------------

PLEASE CELEBRATE WITH US:
All registrations received from today, October 4th for 10 days through
October 14th will receive 10% off. This includes all packages of courses as
well as single courses. Remember, for all registrations, single courses or
packages, you choose the date you will start the course(s).

To received this 10% discount, process your registration online at
www.genealogicalstudies.com for the regular registration fee. You will
receive a receipt from MiraPay for your payment. Please forward the e-mail
to us requesting your 10% discount (admin@...). We will
refund your credit card for the 10%.

If you do not receive the confirmation e-mail or prefer to register by
telephone, please call us toll free at 1-800-580-0165.

If you were considering completing your Certificate program, this would be a
great time to call our office to see what would be the most economical
combination of packages to achieve your objectives. For those who are
finding their financial situation a little tight these days, speak to us
about our 'No Interest, No Service Charge', payment plan.

--------------------

Throughout the year, we will have numerous promotions for products and
draws.

DRAW OCTOBER 31 for a free course (for past or current students):
From all e-mails received. Let us know how the courses have helped you in
your research. Your comments will be added to our 10th Anniversary Memories
Book.

DRAW OCTOBER 31 for a free course (for someone who has not taken a course):
From all e-mails received. Let us know how you believe our program has
helped provide genealogy education OR let us know which course you believe
would be the most useful for you in your research and why.

MONTHLY DRAWS for a package of 6 courses (Value $500)
From all registrations received each month a lucky winner will received a
package of 6 courses. If you register a package of courses, your name will
be entered in the draw for each course in that package (a package of 9
courses gives you 9 chances to win).

OCTOBER 4, 2010 DRAW for a Certificate package of 40 course (value
approximate $4,000)
From all registrations received from October 4, 2009 to October 4, 2010. If
during this period you register a package of courses, your name will be
entered in the draw for each course in that package. If you have registered
more than 10 courses during this period, you will receive the cash value
towards previously registered courses.

FOR SOCIETIES & LIBRARIES:
Are you a member of a society? Work or volunteer in a library? Write an
article for your Society or Library's newsletter about the National
Institute for Genealogical Studies (or ask us to provide the article!). Send
the published newsletter to us at The National Institute, 92 Ashbury Blvd,
Ajax Ontario L1Z 1N1. We will send your Society or Library a Gift
Certificate for a package of 6 courses (Value $500) to use as they wish. We
would suggest it be used as a fund raiser --- sell tickets for draw
overlapping several monthly meetings or events and hold the draw at a
special function!

Offer to give a 45 minutes to an hour presentation for your Society members
or Library patrons. We will even provide the PowerPoint presentation. Each
attendee will receive a free Methodology-Part 1: Getting Started course!

--------------------

As indicated earlier, we will be celebrating our 10th anniversary throughout
this year. We will also have special promotions on other products. To start
this off, we have packaged 3 products that genealogists should carry with
them to properly cite their sources:

RESEARCH ACADEMY PROGRAM

Thank you to all those who have responded to our request of interest in our
guided research trips. We will shortly be letting you know the schedule for
next year's Research Academies. If someone has not responded yet, here is
the message sent out earlier. You still have time to have your voice heard.

In the last several years, we have had Research Academy Programs in various
cities. To ensure quality time with our instructor(s) during the Research
Academy, a small group of individuals is required, therefore space is
limited. We are planning our activities for the for 2010. If you are
interested in joining our instructors on a guided research trip, please let
us know where you would like to go. This could be to Salt Lake City,
Washington, Ottawa, Toronto, Fort Wayne or any other city where important
repositories are found, or it could be to another country such as Ireland,
England, Germany, etc. Simply send us an e-mail to
admin@... to let us know where you would like a guided
research program. If we have a sufficient number of students, your
suggestion may find itself on the schedule! (No obligations naturally on
your part.)

---------------------------

NEW COURSES PLANNED

Many new courses are planned to start in 2009/2010. We are concentrating on
very specialized courses to help you with the Analysis and SkillBuilding
aspects of your research. Look for announcements as we get closer to
offering these courses.

If you have an interest in a topic we do not offer, please let us know. If
you are an instructor with a specific area of expertise we do not covered,
please contact us. Our toll free number is 1-800-580-0165.

I just received the following message from a Yorkshire mailing list:

"I called in at Leeds Register Office yesterday to order and pick up a Death
Cert of an Ancestor and spotted a Notice stating that from the 2nd Nov 2009
to actually call in at the Office to order and pick up a Certificate will
cost £15 but to order a Cert by telephone or post will still be £7, is this
going to be the same in all Register Offices?"

Has anyone else heard about this new rule?

Hi Everyone,

I made up a schedule for Saturday’s event so you would see the specifics of the talks and speakers. If you have east European roots, don’t miss out on this very valuable day.

ALBERTA FAMILY HISTORIES SOCIETY

Presents a FamilyRoots Seminar

Eastern European Special Event

Saturday October 24, 2009

9:30 a.m. Doors Open & Registration Begins

10:00 a.m. Jerry Frank: In Search of Mokro Niemieckie
Using maps for genealogy, both as research tools and to enhance your family stories.

11:00 a.m. Radomir Bilash: Examining Pioneer Experiences through Census and Homestead Records

Unbeknownst to some aspiring genealogists, many archival documents contain a wealth of family history information. This presentation will examine how historical resources can be used not only to enhance a family’s understanding of their ancestors’ immigration and settlement experiences in Canada, but how the recorded information may be used in identifying and extracting family history information contained within Ukraine’s archives. Particular attention will be given to:

·         Homestead applications: what they tell you about your family’s early settlement experience, and

·         Census records: what ethnographic information can be extracted from a census page?

12:00 Lunch Break: Bring a Bag Lunch and Compare Notes - maybe you'll find an ancestor in common!

1:00 p.m. David Makowsky: Developing a Methodology to Document Community History

This research-in-progress presentation will examine the latest developments of the Documenting Church Properties in Rural Communities in Alberta initiative. This initiative aims to systematically record and photograph church properties in rural communities in Alberta in order to preserve community and individual family histories contained within these properties. The outcome of the fieldwork is to create an online collection of photographs and historical information that will assist families in Alberta and in Ukraine who have an interest to learn about their ancestor’s immigration and settlement history. This presentation will examine how the methodologies of this initiative were developed to hold universal applications, and therefore be used to document rural parishes of various ethnic and religious backgrounds across the prairies.

2:00 p.m. Jerry Frank: My Favourite Internet Research Opportunities
Overview of my favourite web sites, many focused on German research in Eastern Europe. Also how to improve your search results using search engines.

Speakers’ Profiles

Jerry Frank is an amateur genealogist specializing, since 1986, in the research of Germans who migrated to or through Russian Poland and Volhynia (north-western Ukraine). He has written three family books, Frank Migrations (about his paternal family), From Nagold to Thalberg (his maternal line), and Ask the Former Generations (a compilation of the previous two). Jerry is also an amateur cartographer, having created two maps: one of German settlements in Russian Poland showing over 4000 Germanic villages and the other for Volhynia with over 1400 Germanic villages. Both represent the most current and comprehensive resources available and were the first ever to be fully indexed. They bring together the independent works of several historical map makers into a single resource and then add the most up to date listings of villages from such sources as the St. Petersburg Consistory records and other SGGEE (Society for German Genealogy in Eastern Europe) extractions. Jerry has spoken at a variety of conferences including FEEFHS (Federation of East European Family History Societies), SGGEE (Society for German Genealogy in Eastern Europe), AHSGR (American Historical Society of Germans from Russia - Calgary and Edmonton Chapters and International Convention), and at the Medicine Hat Germans from Russia Festival. He lives in Calgary, Alberta and is currently active as webmaster for SGGEE - http://www.sggee.org

Radomir Bilash has been associated with the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village near Edmonton since 1977. At the present time he heads the Research Programme for the Village and is also an adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Alberta, teaching through the Modern Languages and Cultural Studies Department. His research has concentrated on the ethnohistory of early Ukrainian settlements in Canada and their pre-emigration life in Galicia and Bukovyna. He has been Project Manager of the Alberta-Ukraine Genealogical Project since 2006.

David Makowsky is currently the Alberta office coordinator for the Alberta Ukraine Genealogical Project, a project established in 2006 to assist Albertans in researching their family history in Alberta and in Ukraine.  Since 1999, David has been associated with the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village and its Research Programme, the last five years focused in documenting and analyzing rural community and family history in east central Alberta.  Since 2005, David’s research topics have been presented as “research in progress” at the annual conferences of the Canadian Association of Slavists and the Canadian Association of Ukrainian Ethnology.  David graduated from the University of Alberta, with a major in political science and a minor in Ukrainian language and literature.  He has also attained a Masters Certificate in Project Management from York University’s Schulich School of Business, with an emphasis towards heritage related projects.

I am sending this e-mail to ask for your help.  There is going to be a special event planned for next spring around April and I would love to hear from you, what topics you would like to have covered.  There has been a suggestion that we have an update about DNA and also get someone to talk about some of the current genealogy technology out there such as GENI etc.

Thank you so very much for your help.

An update about DNA would be a good idea.  I recently received an e-mail from Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation with an offer to
receive information re mtDNA results for $19.50 until Oct. 31st.  I have telephoned their number and keep getting a message saying that number is not available in our area.  I don't know what that means because it is an 866 number and we should be able to get through.

My husband and I have given saliva and swab samples and have not heard anything until now.  It would be nice to be able to have an update
from Sorenson Molecular or from someone who has dealt with them.

Has anyone had success with obtaining results?  Especially without paying out big bucks?  Thanks.

Hi Mertie and all,

While in Raleigh at the NGS Conference, I met people from the company that did and continue to do the DNA for the Acadian Founding Mothers project. If you recall, I did an article on this topic in Chinook, January 2009. They do DNA for individuals, but have been involved in ethnic origins including the proving or disproving of native ancestry of these 80+ maternal lines for the Acadian Founding Mothers and an African-American project. The company is Family Tree DNA and they won the BBB 2009 Award for Excellence in Customer Service. They told me they have sponsorship programs where the organization receives a portion for each member submitting his/her DNA kit. It might be nice to get another point of view than Sorenson’s, but I don’t know if AFHS already has a deal in place with Sorensons.

Gene Tree offered the same or similar deal several years ago.  Both Rene and I applied for our mtDNA results as obtained from Sorenson.  As I recall it took nearly a year to get the results.  They provide only the results for HVR 1 & 2.  If you can get them from Sorenson and mtDNA is of interest to you then the $19.50 price is a bargain.  If you are interested if further testing, e.g. the Y chromosome, then FTDNA is the best bet for genealogical purposes.   Joining a surname group will get a reduced rate on tests.  They also provide the best support in the DNA testing industry.

Cheers

HI Suddie Bill,

I don’t know if you are saying Sorenson does mtDNA whereas FTDNA offers Y-DNA. Just to clarify Family Tree DNA offers both maternal (mtDNA) and paternal (Y-DNA) testing, as well as ethnicity testing.
