Hi – I sent this a tad too soon. I can no longer reach the Romanian client. Her email bounces back as unknown and the other client is looking for Hungarian roots.

Hi everyone,
I found this posted on another list.

WWI Casualties Archive, Red Cross, Geneva

A long forgotten archive has been discovered. "Peter Barton was
commissioned to carry out research into the identities of World War I
casualties discovered in a mass grave at Fromelles in France. He was given
access to the basement of the Red Cross headquarters in Geneva. There, he
was allowed to examine records that have lain virtually untouched since
1918. He estimates that there could be 20 million sets of details,
carefully entered on card indexes, or written into ledgers."

The Red Cross are intending to digitise, and get the 20 million records
online, by. Have a look at this BBC news story link :

Just a reminder that our next meeting is tomorrow, Saturday, March 21st from 2-4
p.m. at the AFHS library.

Ann put a notice in the Breeze saying that it will be a library afternoon with a
library tour and general discussion of tricky English pronunciations, nicknames
and exchange of ideas on material that gives a context to our family histories,
our research problems and problems solved.

She suggested we might like to have tea and cookies at the meeting so if any of
you wish to bring a few cookies they will be appreciated. I plan on taking the
tea-making ingredients.

Anyone interested in English/Welsh research is welcome to attend. See you on

Hi everyone,

I know you have not received your April issue of Chinook yet (and it may be a bit late due to a bad flu – I had the flu not Chinook!) but editing Chinook is like meal preparation at the farm where I grew up. No sooner is one meal over and dishes done when you have to start the next. In this case, you haven’t even sampled the meal for April when the timeline for July looms.

The theme for July is Canadian immigration and yes, I know Ellis Island is in the U.S., but I’m sure many who entered through Ellis Island made their way eventually to Canada. I know one person in particular whose ancestor entered at Ellis Island, then made his way to Chicago and later to Alberta. The ancestor died on the B.C. coast so he had crossed the continent east coast to west coast. Thus, if anyone has experience with Ellis Island records and can write a short piece on it, we could run it in the July issue. Perhaps you even have a photo from your trip to visit this in person. Let me know.

Of course, Grosse-Ile plays a prominent part in Canadian immigration and again we are seeking a writer for an article on this topic. So if you can do such an article or know someone who could, please let me know.

Of course, any other articles on topics to do with Canadian immigration, let me know. Remember, Immigration means comes Into, Emigration means Exits from and Migration can be either way. It means Moves! So for July we want articles about how people came “Into Canada.”

Which leads me to another possible article, what about the people who travelled by horse and buggy or other means to come north for land or for gold? Do you have such a story to tell about your ancestors trip overland?

Hi all,
As genealogists with lots of precious data on our computers I'm sure most of us are backing up often...
Here is a good overview of the April 1st virus that is making the rounds.  This came to me from our IT department at the university.

---
The latest release of the Conficker worm (Also called the April Fool’s Virus) has received significant media attention of late.  McAfee however, rates the current risk assessment as Low and fixes and mitigation strategies are available.

The Conficker worm exploits a vulnerability affecting the Microsoft Windows operating systems. In 2008, Microsoft released the MS08-067 security update to fix this vulnerability.

Now in its third generation, W32/Conficker.worm.gen.c contains mechanisms for self defense and disables various services including security software and  Windows Automatic Update. The worm may also prevent users from running antivirus software and visiting antivirus websites.  On April 1st, the worm may download new malicious software on already infected hosts.

Windows users are strongly advised to run Microsoft Update immediately to install the latest Microsoft security patches and ensure that their antivirus software is updated to the latest virus definitions.  (McAfee users at the UofC should right click on their McAfee ‘shield’ in the tray of their taskbar and select ‘update’)

If you suspect your computer may be infected, McAfee has released a Conficker removal utility. To download W32/Conficker Stinger v10.0.1.533, go to the Avert Tools webpage:
http://vil.nai.com/vil/averttools.aspx

For a summary of information on W32/Conficker, see the McAfee KB60909 knowledgebase article:
https://kc.mcafee.com/corporate/index?page=email_content&pmv=print&locale=en_US&actp=email&id=KB60909

For more detailed instructions on detecting and combating this worm, see the McAfee Combatting W32 Conficker Worm PDF file:

Speaking of the 1916 census, I tried to find a website that listed the columns because they are often hard to read and some of my clients wanted a list of the headings. So since no one else did it (that I could find), here is my list (any errors or omissions, let me know and I will update):

Columns in 1916 Census

Columns 1 & 2: House and Family Number in Order of recording

Column 3: Name

Column 4: Military Service

Columns: 5, 6 and 7: Township, Range, Meridian for rural areas; for cities these were struck out and House number/address was written in the heading

Column 8: Municipality, but in the case of a family in Edmonton, that was struck out and Street was written in as header

Column 9: Relationship to head of household

Column 10: Sex

Column 11: Marital status (first initial from one of the following: Single, Married, Widowed, Divorced or Legally Separated)

Column 12: Age at last birthday

Column 13: Country or place of birth; if Canada specify province or territory

Column 14: Religion

Column 15: Year of immigration to Canada

Column 16: Year of naturalization

Column 17: Nationality

Column 18: Racial or Tribal Origin

Column 19: Can speak English

Column 20: Can speak French

Column 21: Other languages spoken as mother tongue

Column 22: Can read

Column 23: Can write

Column 24: Chief occupation or trade

Column 25: Employer = E, Employee = W, Working on own account = O.A.

Column 26: State where person is employed, “on farm” etc.

Hi Leslie,
There is a local history tab as well as the newspaper tab at this link. Families that stayed in a community or maintained connections contributed family stories to the local history books published around 1967 or later. I often used this web site while working on 1906 census for Alberta. Family names might be spelled a different way in every census so it helps to know the location of a farm or residence. Uncle Al never lived in Airdrie but his birth was registered there in 1918. Family lived on a farm about ten miles west at the time.

Researchers can contact a specific church or school to ask about history books. One of the Presbyterian churches has a newly published 1905-2005 history of church staff and families that isn't currently listed in the local history room of the downtown Calgary Public Library.

Well worth looking in old (online) newspapers if the researcher has a date for any early Alberta birth, marriage or death. I found small notices for many relatives and their friends around 1906-1914. Also learned about the funeral arrangements for the mother of a former Calgary mayor. Family researchers using cemetery records assumed she died in Ontario but she lived in Calgary several years at the end of life and appeared in one or two census households with her son's family.

In the same family, there was a worn sandstone marker at Union Cemetery for three children who died in the 1880s, probably moved from the earlier cemetery. See http://www.ucalgary.ca/~dsucha/unionhist.html for cemetery history. Death date for one infant seemed to be different on the father's tombstone in another section of the cemetery. Death notice from the Calgary Herald solved the mystery when the death registrations were uncertain.

Newspaper online archives for recent obits start May 3, 2002 -- link near the bottom of the screen.

No development or change to our old Junior High School left vacant several years. Some of the items were still in the museum near Mr. Kennedy's room the last time a former student asked.  -- Elizabeth Rodier aka Alice

As the facilitator of the Canadian group with the British Columbia Genealogical Society, I am preparing a talk for your fellow researchers who now live in B.C.  Being a Calgarian and having several pioneer ancestors in Alberta, I have been pretty successful finding data for my own family, but would very much welcome any hints you might have on researching Alberta ancestor BMDs beyond the obvious contacts to the Ministry, Archives, the AFHS and its website, the Edmonton group, Alberta Digital Archives etc., all the obvious associations in Calgary and Edmonton with research capacity who I will recommend anyway, as they did some great research for me.  It appears that most of the audience here are not novice researchers, so I am looking for "extra hints" on BMDs.

Beyond the obvious sources, do any of you have any hints? some stories? to share on successes re: researching specific churches, records or any databases that I may have overlooked or might not have been on my radar?  I know less about Northern Alberta.

Thanks so much in advance and, just so you know, I am very serious about crediting my sources!

Hello – I have not been receiving posts from Distgen but I did notice Spencer’s note about the 1916 census in the DistGen archives.  Yes, it’s true.  We have finally received the 1916 census on microfilm at Calgary Public Library.  We labeled it and put it in the microfilm cabinet today.

I received this info as the AFHS's rep with the FFHS:

On 1 April 2009 the website address for the GRO changed but the address for the online ordering of birth, marriage and death certificates remains http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates. This page can also be accessed from the new website www.direct.gov.uk/gro.

Good morning all,

In response to a few querries  to the Library, the Library Committee would like to generate two (2) lists:

1) List of Researchers ( Professional/ non-prefessional) who will do research for others.

2) List of Members who will do/assist with translations ( of genealogical documents) for/with others.

Membership to either of these lists is voluntary; and lists are to be kept at the AFHS Library.
Library Committee will review lists annually to ensure each list is up-to-date. Withdrawl from a list can occur at any time with notification to the Library committee.

Please send info to: Donna Kirkwood, Library committee member, at dekirkwood@... for inclusion on one or both of the above lists.  We see the above as another service we can offer to our membership.

Thanks

Donna Kirkwood
