Per one of my other genealogy mailing lists, there might be a new threat out there for Google users.  It has affected both Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox users, so be wary.  If a Windows computer is so affected, the user will see all the normal Google pages looking okay, but clicking on any hyperlink will take them to porn sites.  While the ‘bad’ search sites are loading, the browser status bar will say “7.7.7.0”  This is a recent virus so there is no guarantee your anti-virus will detect it, yet.  If interested, do a browser search on “7.7.7.0 Google” for more information.  There is a technical way to remove the blighter if you get infected.  Come to the Computer SIG meeting this Saturday morning, 9:30am, if you want to discuss more.

Hi Jim and all,

Yes, I have found this virus attempting to do the same tricky stuff with my computer, but I use AVG and they pretty much update the virus detection daily. The result is it throttled the virus before it was embedded on my computer. AVG refused to allow the porn page to upload. So it tackled the beast with a two-prong approach. I wondered why a normally safe genealogy site I had visited before was not loading and why AVG was saying it was a bad site. I follow all the precautions of avoiding “fishy” sites, not opening any attachments unless I feel it is safe, but the most important precaution I take is keeping my antivirus software up to date. It is what saves the day on both email and websites.

I also have a registry cleaner and an anti-spyware program - in addition to manually removing cookies daily or several times a day.

I heard a computer expert on TV today saying “security and the Internet is an oxymoron!” So we need all the help we can get. I look forward to reading what you write for your April column Jim. Maybe you will touch on lessening the oxymoron!

I've made CDs and DVDs of images, but I'm not sure if DVD players will recognize the TIFF format.  Mine were all in JPG format.  We popped them into the player and it viewed them beautifully on the TV.  Some older DVD players don't recognize JPGs, though.

You could use a simple "scrapbook" program to make a virtual album.  There are free ones out there.  Most will allow you to save to DVD for viewing, I think.

Hope this helps!

If you download and install a free program called IrfanView it can open tiff
files and
save them as jpg files. Tedious if you have a jot of images but IrfanView has a
batch
conversion capability. However I have not used that feature, but it is a program
everyone should have on their computer. See www.irfanview.com

Did you explore the software that came with your burner?  Some of those titles are quite powerful.

Giveaway of the Day (website that gives away one free software title each day) is giving away a DVD burning software tool today which seems to be getting positive reviews.  I haven't used it and don't know if it can create slideshows but perhaps worth trying out.  The software is called StarBurn and is available at http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/ but only until midnight tonight (not certain which time zone.

I have used Photoshop Elements to create a DVD to distribute pictures to family but it has a Very Steep learning curve.  Once you figure it out, this is very powerful software which can easily repair old photos (cracks and tears) and easily re-tint black and whites (if you want to give them that sepia tint).  You can download a 30-day free trial at https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/tdrc/index.cfm?promoid=DZHDI&product=photoshop%5Felements

Good luck,
Yvette

The next Eng/Welsh SIG meeting is on Saturday, January 17th 2–4 p.m. at the AFHS library.  The topic will be Names & Dates with information on the 1725 date change which made January 1st the beginning of a new year; regnal dating (i.e. interpreting a date written as ‘5 Chas 1/Hil’); the passing down of family names, religious names and what they might mean and a ranking of UK surnames (‘Smith’ still tops the list).  Please bring along anything related to the topic to share with the group plus any ‘roadblocks’ in your research or recent discoveries.  Ann Williams (403-286-4095)

Subject: 1911 ENG CENSUS NOW AVAILABLE
astridge@...
Send Email Send Email

I'm forwarding this from the Federation of Family History Societies - it seems that the 1911 census for most English counties is now available on a pay-per-view basis.  I have not tried it myself yet.

You can find this posting and a copy in PDF Format on the FFHS Website at http://www.ffhs.org.uk/archives/census1911.php

1911 Census goes live

Today the 1911 Census has gone live on the Internet at http://www.1911census.co.uk/.  The site is a pay per view site in partnership between FindMyPast and The National Archives.  The site will not be part of the FindMyPast system and will not be available for viewing as part of their subscription services, although log-in details and pay per view credits will work on either site.

The census will go live on the FindMyPast subscription site later in 2009.

The Federation of Family History Societies hopes that you will be able to further your research and carry it forward into a key period of the 20th Century, which included the build up to the First World War and Suffrage for Women.  There will only be one more census that we can use in the first half of the 20th Century and that is the one for 1921 as the Census for 1931 was burnt during the Second World War and there was no census taken in 1941 due to the war, although a National Register was made for the issue of identity cards.

The release is ahead of the usual release date of the first working day of the year following the 100th anniversary of the taking of the census; for the 1911 this would have been the 3rd of January 2012.

The Information Commissioner has made a RULING .in 2006 about the availability of the 1911 Censes and the early release is explained in this ruling.

The 1911 Census also differs from the previous censuses in that it is the original householder’s schedules that have survived and not the enumerators’ books we are used to.  As a consequence of this the amount of data is greatly increased and the paper copies are stored on 2 kilometres of shelving, approximately 8 times larger than previous censuses.

This increase has meant that it has taken much longer to prepare them for public access and much credit goes to the teams at the TNA and FindMyPast for getting this done.

From today there will be a staggered release of the information in the 1911 census.  This will include images and transcription data, but with sensitive data held back, in line with the Information Commissioner's recent rulingFrom 3 January 2012 the public will have full access to the entire 1911 census, including the information not accessible in 2009. Researchers anywhere in the world will be able to search across the fields of the census by name, address or The National Archives catalogue reference, and download high-resolution digital images.

Natalie Ceeney, Chief Executive of The National Archives said:

"The 1911 census holds more information than the 1901 census.  It is also the first census where the householder's schedule has remained the master entry, rather than the enumerator's notes, so researchers are actually able, in most cases, to view their actual ancestors' handwriting when looking at 1911 census entries.  This will be an invaluable resource for anyone who is working hard to trace their family's history."

Also available are the enumerators’ summary sheets which give information and statistics on their locality. These will be added to the site when all the household schedules are complete.

The following counties are online now and the others will follow as soon as possible, with Nottinghamshire and the West Riding of Yorkshire going live very soon.

Hi folks,

Last chance to submit a brief write-up accompanied by photos or samples if possible on the  topic of Present Your Family History. The deadline is February first so let us know how you have organized, presented and preserved your family history. We are looking for unusual ways. We already have someone writing on formal genealogical reports, books (both those in formal genealogical methods and those written as stories) and some that are novel ideas. So if you have something to share (it doesn’t have to be long), please submit to me by February 1st.

Hi Everyone:

The AFHS Ontario SIG will be meeting on Monday January 26, 2009 from 6:00 to 9:30 pm at the Alberta Family Histories Society Global Headquarters, 712 – 16th Avenue NW.

This meeting will be a “Research Night”.

Rather than a presentation about a specific topic, you will have an opportunity to use the resources of the AFHS Library and to have the assistance of other Ontario researchers.

Everyone who has some family history research to do in Ontario is welcome. You can come early at 6:00 pm and bring something to eat, or come at any time during the evening. There is a wireless connection at the library, so you can use your own laptop if you wish.

From what I have heard so far, the weather person is not calling for snow, and it will be a bit warmer on Monday.

Lorna

Subject: Editorial Schedule for Chinook
president@...
Send Email Send Email

Hi all,

As usual we are receiving many excellent articles for the April issue on Present Your Family History and some will be saved for future issues. This does not mean that if you have an article to submit on this or any other topic that you should not send it in.

I am taking another course on producing magazines and journals. It always helps to keep up on the latest and greatest techniques and I love learning. One thing the new course material pointed out is a publication should have an editorial schedule a year in advance to prepare readers and contributors for what is expected. I have not come up with a topic for the full year, but I am letting you know the next two issues after April and then I will keep my ears to the ground to hear the hoof beats of what is hot and what is not.

So here is the editorial schedule for the next two issues:

July issue – immigration stories and articles. Where did our Canadian immigrants come from and where did they settle? What problems did they face or what funny stories did they tell. I was speaking with a gentleman at a meeting last night. He remembers coming from Holland when he was 4 and a half. He talked about the ship that was converted from a military vessel. The “dining hall” was a room with picnic type tables complete with benches nailed to the floor so the tossing of the ship would not send them flying. He remembers sitting down to his dessert, a plate of ice cream. Just as he was about to dig in, the ship tossed one way and the ice cream slid away from him. He looked down the table to see where it went and just then the ship tossed the other way and the dish came sliding back. “Guess who got a face full of ice cream?” he chuckled. That’s what I love. Stories about real people with real experiences that touch our hearts with their courage or touch our funny bone with their sense of humour. Articles can also be about sources for finding records and other tips for digging out the information from the family memories before they fade. So in time for Canada Day anything about immigration will be welcome.

October issue – war stories and war records. Already some articles are trickling in on this topic. An interesting topic to explore might be how are war records and war stories of the soldiers in Afghanistan being kept for future generations. It is good to look outside the traditional aspects of any topic – e.g. not just the past but the present, maybe even the future (what should we encourage government and/or historians do in documenting for the future). Maybe even what happened to those left to fan the flames of the home fires? Rosie Riveters and children finding work as soon as they were able… Children who never knew their father because he left and never returned…

The topics I choose come out of what is already being submitted, but I also look forward to direct requests to cover a topic. So what ideas do you have for next January and the following April? How our ancestors (or maybe even you) survived the Great Depression? What trades and professions our ancestors came to Canada with and what did they actually find work doing?

You tell me! Or Ask the Expert and that may lead us to a great topic down the road. Meanwhile keep the submissions and ideas flowing. Chinook is after all for you!

Happy reading!

This was posted on the Can-Manitoba Rootsweb list - I don't know if it is correct or not.  If that is the case then it sounds like we will end up having to pay to see the information if it is just going to be on Ancestry.  Carol Lylyk

"LDS say that the site is a beta site and still under construction so to expect things to come and go. The times that I used it when it first came on I was able to access the actual census images, they too have now disappeared. Apparently their agreement with Ancestry.com will allow Ancestry to post the indexes and images when everything is working right."

Here’s the answer just received from the folks at FamilySearch.org.  It looks as courteous/respectful as possible to me, but it looks like we’re in for a technical wait.  LDS folks have very sophisticated technical people and so if it really is just a technical authentication problem, I’m sure this will be overcome within months.  However, the privacy considerations implied by the Dec 2011 date are likely unmoveable.

The Canadian 1916 and 1901 censuses are not available on Record Search at this time due to contractual concerns.  The contract specifies that the index, with links to the TGN's images, will be made available to the general public in three years,  on Dec 19 2011.

The collections will be available, however, to FamilySearch members as soon as the authentication process in in place.

Other years of the Canada Census, which are coming soon, will be available as free indexes to the public, and will be able to be posted even before authentication is available."

The go live date will be Dec. 19, 2011.  The second paragraph refers to a situation that isn't in place yet, where registered members of FamilySearch.org (including the general public) will be the only ones with access to Record Search.  At that situation is not in place at this time.  Anyone can access Record Search as of now and thus no one can access the 1916 census records.  I know this sounds strange but it is due to the contract that was signed regarding this collection.

We do hope the above answers your questions.  Be patient and, one way or the other, this collection will eventually be available.

Sincerely,

FamilySearch Support

Am searching for a book: Adventurers & Exiles: The Great Scottish Exodus by
Marjory Harper, published by Profile Books.

Does anyone have any advice as to where I might find a copy, ie a library,
rather than purchasing one from Amazon or Barnes and Noble?

Thanks,

Lynda,

Click "search talonline", If you type in the title as keyword and select all Alberta Libraries, instead of the default, it shows Edmonton Public Library and U of A, both own a copy.  You could try an Interlibrary loan through our public library although right now  we are changing our catalogue system and  you won't be able to order until after Feb 17th.  If you're not in a rush it's an option.

If you haven't ever ordered an ILL before, the borrowing period is whatever the owning location sets and it can take a little while to get it for you.

Hi Lynda,

Once you've searched TAL as Lynne suggests, you can actually place the
hold directly to have the item sent to your local Calgary Public Library
branch. You need to have a valid card from a TAL member library (i.e.
you can use your Calgary Public Library card). Just click the 'Request
this item' button and follow the instructions. Use the drop down menu
to choose your library system and then the branch to which you would
like the item delivered. Fill in the form and you're off to the races.
Delivery will be affected by our system switchover - we won't be able to
process any holds until the 17th, but the request will have already been
put in motion.

You can, if you'd rather, just give a call to the Humanities Department
and 403-260-2785 and we could do this for you.

Hope this helps,

Christine Hayes

The next meeting is on Saturday Feb 21st at the AFHS library from 2-4 p.m.  We will discuss results and tricks for the now-available 1911 English/Welsh census, any research problems plus items falling under the topic The Good, the Bad and their Records (and maybe share photographs of the ugly!)  It's a wide ranging topic that will include information on the types of courts and the crimes they dealt with plus tales of family drunks, liars, cheaters, prisoners, wicked step-great-grandmothers, family abandoners, wife abusers plus pirate ancestors and witches.  Hopefully we'll also hear tales of war heros and award winners to balance the above litany.

Everyone welcome.
Ann Williams

As for the good, I was thinking of medal and award winners - perhaps you have some in your family.
