Hi all,

I meant to say at the meeting in my talk that Chinook would make a great gift. You would purchase an AFHS membership for a friend or relative and they would receive 4 issues. Or you can order copies of an individual issue. See Ordering Copies at http://www.afhs.ab.ca/publications/index.html

The great thing about Chinook is we cover a wide range of topics and buying a gift membership is a great idea no matter where the person lives. For example the next issue continues the tips on finding female ancestors as well as a focus on DNA with Jim Benedict writing about Y-DNA and how it relates to his family and I write about an mtDNA project.

So I hope you will consider purchasing an AFHS membership for the family/friends who are even slightly interested in genealogy or family history. I am assuming that all of you are members, but if someone is not, put this on your wish list.

Hi Everyone:

Many of you genealogists out there would qualify for the following position! Paul McGrath set a great example of how personable, resourceful and helpful most family historians are.

Marion Peterson received the following from another genealogy e-mail list and has passed it on.

Lorna

----------------------

Hello,

Ancestors in the Attic -- History Television’s successful family history documentary series -- is searching for a staff genealogist.  Following is our call for applications.

We would appreciate your help circulating this as widely as possible to your members, your email distribution list and to anyone you think would be interested in applying for this position.

Logo_02v10

Ancestors in the Attic – History Television’s Gemini-nominated family history documentary series – is searching for a staff genealogist for its fourth season.

Part personal drama, part forensic investigation and part historical revelation, Ancestors in the Attic provides unexpected, emotional and often life-changing answers to the genealogical questions of ordinary Canadians.

Using the tools of genealogy and family history, the program takes ordinary Canadians on a journey of discovery to solve family mysteries and make emotional connections with relatives, family members or ancestors. In the process, we also examine Canadian history from a very personal and intimate perspective.

The role of the staff genealogist is twofold: assist our research team with the extensive genealogical and historical investigations required to solve the stories we air each season; and appear on-camera with our host, Jeff Douglas, to help our submitters solve their family mysteries.

To succeed, candidates must have experience in the field of family history, be skilled in advanced historical research methods and have experience with online and primary genealogical resources both here in Canada and also, preferably, in the United Kingdom. Candidates must have an intense curiosity, be highly organized, computer literate and capable of thinking outside the box. The successful candidate must also be passionate about family history and genealogy, a talented communicator, and excited about conveying detailed genealogical findings in a simple, accessible and credible way to a television audience.

While experience as a genealogist is an advantage, Ancestors in the Attic is also interested in hearing from anyone in related fields that meet the criteria. And, while our preference is to find one person to fill both research and on-camera roles, we are flexible.

If you are interested in becoming part of the successful Ancestors in the Attic team please send your resume by mail to:

Hi Everyone,

Even though it is still a few weeks until you receive your copy of Chinook, the January 2009 Table of Contents is available online at

http://www.afhs.ab.ca/publications/index.html

Please note that I am looking for article on Present Your Family History. It can be scrapbooking, slide shows, published books, quilts, you name it. As I say in Chinook under Call for Articles, surprise and delight us with the way you have presented your family history. I already have two in the works. One is someone I asked directly and the other one was suggested by a member of AFHS. This one is an idea I had never heard of or thought of. So as you spend time with your family over the holidays, think of how you can or how you have shared your family history so it will not be lost. You have spent hours researching and documenting. Do you want your descendants to have to start all over or carry on where you left off? To me this is a very important topic and I will be the guest speaker in April, so I will be collecting the ideas to hopefully inspire you to Present Your Family History if you haven’t already (or maybe give you a new idea or two to add to your repertoire).

Meanwhile folks, have a very Merry Christmas New Year whether you celebrate on December 25th or January 7th. And to those who do not celebrate either, may you enjoy your family and friends in whatever festivities you do celebrate.

May there be Peace on Earth and no count greater than 100 except in the hundreds who come home safe and sound.

Good afternoon all,

Happy snow-shoveling!!!!

Please be advised that contrary to what the last Breeze says the AFHS Library will not be open on Friday December 19, 9-12.
Also now that Winter has arrived please "stay tuned" from now until Spring Thaw of possible "last minute" closure of the AFHS Library due to weather conditions (high wind chill, poor driving conditions, and/or major snowfall ).. When in doubt, (on these "open times") call the Library before you come.

     Hi Rob:

I am and was a Telus high speed Internet customer since it was
available in my area, but I don't have TV. I had no problem with the
Internet service whatsoever. My neighbour just changed from Shaw to
Telus Internet and TV.

I an very satisfied with the service. Speed is about 125 MB/s.
Service is reliable. I like the optional ( free ) spam control. Since it
was introduced I hardly get any spam. It is easy to register.

     Cheers,

Something else you may want to consider is that you might be able to get a
free lap-top from Telus if you switch to their high-speed.

My Mother-in-law got one last year when she switched to Telus' high-speed
and digital tv and phone package. We have too many televisions or we'd
think about it, too. I did talk to Telus a couple of months ago and asked
if the program was still active and I was told that if you ask, you can get
a free laptop.

If you're thinking along these lines, then it might be worth it to ask about
the lap-top, too.

Something else I'm keen to try is the USB Adapter. I gather Rogers has a
new one but Bell and someone else (?) have had them for a while, too. With
the adapter, you plug it into your laptop and wherever you get cell phone
service, you'd have internet.

Good luck!

Hi Everyone:

I know that some of you do not have History Channel on your TV, so here is an opportunity to see Ancestors in the Attic on the Global Channel. I received this information from Quinte Branch, OGS, who got it from Toronto Branch OGS.

I checked the TV schedule and the first one is tonight at 10:00 pm.

Lorna

-----------------------------------

Ancestors in the Attic (Television program) - on Global

Ancestors in the Attic is usually broadcast only on History Television, a cable channel, but Global Television is going to be showing some episodes over the next four weeks:

Wednesday December 17th at 10pm: One-hour Cenotaph Special
Two students go in search of the true stories behind  the names of two soldiers on their high school Cenotaph.

Sunday December 21 at 7pm: Mary
A Korean-Canadian returns to her homeland to find the birth parents she never knew.

Sunday December 28 at 7pm: Missing Pieces
A Japanese-Canadian goes to Japan for the first time in search of his father's family.

Sunday January 4 at 7pm: Autograph Book
In 1917 a British nurse and a native Canadian  soldier signed their names in an autograph book. This is the story of the  love story that bound them and the search for their descendants.

This is in addition to the usual showings at 8 pm on Saturdays on History Television.

In commemoration of their 40th anniversary, the Saskatchewan Genealogical Society is publishing a book to honor the Women Pioneers of Saskatchewan.  The goal is to produce a record of the women who played a huge role in the settlement and growth of the province of Saskatchewan, Canada within the time frame of the 1800s to 1950.

My grandmother Isabel (Woodland) Irvine was one of these remarkable women. She was also the family historian and she loved to write.  There is a 12 page document of her life (in her own words) outlining their homesteading years.  It is wonderfully descriptive and rich with details.

My challenge, as the family historian and genealogist in my generation of our family tree, is to condense her story to 2000 words for the Women Pioneers of Saskatchewan publication.  My uncle Bob Irvine, the genealogist of his generation, has agreed to help.  We are indeed fortunate to have Grandma's writings.

I encourage any of you others with Saskatchewan pioneering women in your family to please write their story. Include as many names and places as you can.  Brainstorm with the elders in your family and bring the story of these remarkable women to light.

For more information about this publication, please see the Saskatchewan Genealogical Society webpage: http://www.saskgenealogy.com/general/Women_Pioneers.htm  The deadline for submissions is January 31, 2009.

I have a pay per view account with them and that suits me. I have also
chosen to have a one-year international subscription With ancestry.com and
have found it invaluable for my current research (I've saved over 100 images
of census and other records), but once that's complete I may find other
subscriptions provide more value.

"Worth the cost" - what are your criteria? Each person has different
* research resources (discretionary money)
* research needs (e.g., to prove a line that will result in an inheritance,
to clarify medical issues, etc.)
* research wishes (do you want visual image proof of data or simply
transcription indication of proof)
* etc.

Have you used the indexes (free) to determine that they likely have enough
images of relevance to your research online to merit a subscription
investment?

Come up with a rough number of how many images you expect to find, then
divide the subscription cost by that number. Individual image proofs can
cost $20-50 in some cases when you order from a government office - then one
generally only gets the ones that they consider "essential". If you find
the images at this site could average $5 or less - that's obviously a
bargain in comparison. But $5 each for many images - is that within your
genealogy budget?

Have you compared what they have to offer versus ancestry.com or other
subscriptions that you have (or could purchase - there are a lot of options
now for UK)?

While focused specifically on UK, FindMyPast also provides a good index to
passenger lists from UK to Canada - voyages that were only the tail end of
arrival in N America. So even if one doesn't have UK roots, the passenger
lists can be very helpful (e.g., I've used it successfully to locate persons
emigrating from Russia through England to Canada). I've also used their
indexes successfully to pinpoint images in the Cdn National Archives
unindexed passenger lists.

My comments certainly aren't definitive, but perhaps these and other
contributed criteria provide a basis for you to make a decision.

Best,

Judith Rempel, B.A., M.A., Coordinator

For centuries, Germanic people lived within the borders of Russia.  In the late 19th century, due to political and economic conditions, large numbers of these settlers left, with many emigrating to North America.  Anne Stang and Susan Kuzina from the Calgary Chapter of the American Historical Society of Germans from Russia will talk about history of the Germans from Russia and the role of the Society in promoting the history, culture and genealogy of Germanic settlers in Russia and their descendants.

Per one of my other genealogy mailing lists, there might be a new threat out there for Google users.  It has affected both Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox users, so be wary.  If a Windows computer is so affected, the user will see all the normal Google pages looking okay, but clicking on any hyperlink will take them to porn sites.  While the ‘bad’ search sites are loading, the browser status bar will say “7.7.7.0”  This is a recent virus so there is no guarantee your anti-virus will detect it, yet.  If interested, do a browser search on “7.7.7.0 Google” for more information.  There is a technical way to remove the blighter if you get infected.  Come to the Computer SIG meeting this Saturday morning, 9:30am, if you want to discuss more.

Hi Jim and all,

Yes, I have found this virus attempting to do the same tricky stuff with my computer, but I use AVG and they pretty much update the virus detection daily. The result is it throttled the virus before it was embedded on my computer. AVG refused to allow the porn page to upload. So it tackled the beast with a two-prong approach. I wondered why a normally safe genealogy site I had visited before was not loading and why AVG was saying it was a bad site. I follow all the precautions of avoiding “fishy” sites, not opening any attachments unless I feel it is safe, but the most important precaution I take is keeping my antivirus software up to date. It is what saves the day on both email and websites.

I also have a registry cleaner and an anti-spyware program - in addition to manually removing cookies daily or several times a day.

I heard a computer expert on TV today saying “security and the Internet is an oxymoron!” So we need all the help we can get. I look forward to reading what you write for your April column Jim. Maybe you will touch on lessening the oxymoron!

Subject: Possible redirect virus related to Google searches
