yes I will talk about the Mac using the XP OS, and, very briefly, about Reunion genealogical software (I do not know anything about other programs).

There will also be a presentation by a switcher (Ken Runquist) on what he likes about the Mac (possibly more helpful than my presentation as I have only troubleshot Windows computers not worked on them).

I suggested combining Latest Genealogy News and Ask the Expert with the how to columns. My original suggestion was just that – a suggestion. We can adjust to what interests you the most.

Get involved. Meet new people. See your name in print. Lend a helping hand to others less experienced. Give back for what you have received from AFHS. Have fun.

We need you!

Hello everyone

I received this message on another genealogy list and thought AFHS members might be interested. I do not know who the original author was or the date of the original message.

-----Original Message-----

Dear Friends,

I have just learned the sad news that CBC has decided not to renew the
genealogy series "Who Do You Think You Are?" for a second season. This is
really disappointing for those of us who worked on the show. We all enjoyed
the experience and were proud of what we accomplished. The ratings for the
show were very good, but the CBC has decided that it doesn't have "room" in
its schedule for the show.

If you enjoyed the program and would like to see it continue, why not
contact the folks at CBC and let them know how you feel? If enough people
express their disappointment, perhaps they will change their minds.

Here are a few people at CBC you can contact:

Commissioning Editor/Senior producer: Linda Laughlin
<mailto:Linda_Laughlin@ cbc.ca> Linda_Laughlin@ cbc.ca (416) 205-2402
Area Executive Producer, Independent Documentaries: Michael Claydon
<mailto:doczone@cbc. ca> doczone@cbc. ca 416-205-2778
Executive Director, Documentary Programming: Mark Starowicz:
<mailto:Mark_Starowicz@ cbc.ca> Mark_Starowicz@ cbc.ca
Or go to the following web page to send a comment:
<http://www.cbc. ca/contact/ index.html> http://www.cbc. ca/contact/ index.html

Also, if CBC won't pick it up, perhaps CTV would! Send a note to them at
<programming@ ctv.ca>

In the meantime, reruns of season one will be running on CBC Newsworld on
Sundays at 1:30 and 4:30 (starting yesterday). Tune in and show CBC that you
really do care!

There seems to be a misconception that Chinook is in dire need of material and I have received some worried email messages. The truth is I have material enough for another 3-4 issues and have dozens of sources for more when those run out. The truth is also that just because there are so many articles available, I am always on the search for material to fit certain themes, topics that readers tell me they would like to see and items for the little spaces in between.

Things readers have told me they would like to see:

How-to articles – Beginner and Advanced (I think I have a volunteer for the Beginner How-to column and I think the advanced how-to is probably best to be done on an ad hoc basis – e.g. for the July issue I put out a call for how-to find female ancestors) – Rather than just a list of tips, it is good to have examples and a story to go along with it.

SIG articles – what the SIG has been doing, but more importantly search tips and sources for the region or topic of the SIG.

Board information – I was asked for more and then I was told to cut back on Board information, so it is a fine balance!

Examples of proper research methodology vs entertaining stories

Entertaining stories vs proper methodology

Latest genealogy news – websites, books, methods

Sharing names/places to find connections

Q&A

Photos of Board members, so we know who they are when we see them at meetings

I like photos or clipart to break up the text and a great one for the cover (has to be wider than tall)  so even if you have some great photos and no story to go with it – send the photo with caption and photo credits.

I try to strike a balance of the above items so hopefully there is something for every reader in each issue. Your feedback has been overwhelmingly supportive. It is nice to know Chinook is so appreciated by the members and you are happy with my work. It really doesn’t seem like work, which is dangerous because I can spend too much time without realizing it.

Although the website has deadlines as the day before the actual deadline for each issue, count back two months from the month on the issue – e.g. July is the next issue and May is two months before. So May 1st is the date I must have submissions to be considered for the July issue.

OK folks, I didn’t want to repeat the “back to Adam” joke, so I will assume you have no stumbling blocks left. If you do, then you need to send them to me. No one has sent in any surnames being searched for our column “Surname Connections”. Members have 2 free surname connections quests that can be printed each year, so that would be around 300+ per year. So far I have received about 5 for this year’s Chinook and none for the July issue.

Don’t be shy. Shrinking violets don’t uncover those tombstones in faraway places or dig up the connections to others who have. Please send me the name of the elusive person or couple, the area and timeframe for these dead-end people and who knows who you might meet. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. A whole new year start in September (v29 of Chinook), so don’t miss your chance for your two submissions for v28!

I expect my mailbox to overflow. Send the surname connections you are seeking to editor-chinook@... or knowmap@... in case the voluminous response brings my first email address down!

I love reading email, so don’t disappoint me.

I look forward to at least 100 responses!

Hi folks,

It must be nice to know it all! At least that’s the way it would seem, because no one has asked any new questions for our July issue’s “Ask the Expert Column”. So it must mean you are a know-it-all when it comes to genealogy. If you are one of the few who still have some questions on How-to… please send me your question(s) before May 1, 2008. If you ask the question in this issue, then the know-it-alls can send in their answers for the October issue.

Questions are anonymous so you don’t need to blow your cover. You can continue to be thought a know-it-all. Even the answers can be anonymous, so if you are shy about knowing it all, no one will know it is you with the answers. Right now there are no questions and so no answers outstanding. You can be the first in line to find out what you secretly want to know about the how-to of any aspect of genealogy!

Subject: Yes, my children are related to Hillary Rodham Clinton
president@...

Well, well, well! Will wonders never cease! First Madonna, Celine Dion and Alanis Morisette, now I find my children are blood relatives to Hillary Rodham Clinton.

I heard Hillary Clinton talking about being related to Madonna and other French Canadian celebrities, so thought there could be a common ancestor or two. So I checked the excellent work done by  Diane Wolford Sheppard tracing Hillary Clinton’s French Canadian ancestry, which Diane and another woman with French Canadian (FC) ancestry jointly researched and coauthored, then contributed to “Michigan’s Habitant Heritage” (a publication that ran a series of articles I wrote on how to research French Canadian ancestry!). It seems the Washington genealogist getting all the credit for the recent news of Hillary’s FC connections actually used the research of these two women.

Anyway – holy crow! Yes, my children have a couple of blood connections to Hillary – 10th cousins, just like Hillary is to Madonna. However, Hillary has nothing on my children who are 5th cousins to Madonna.

So be careful not to bad mouth anyone – they could be related.

beginners are always welcome and it never hurts to hear about resources
you might use in the future. I will be saying a few words about Scots
Law, what it is and why you need to know a bit about it to progress with
your research. Donna Kirkwood will speak on Irish Landed Estate records
but anybody who has experience with this should feel free to add their

Subject: Taylor and Cargill Families

Dear Dawn Kirkpatrick

at

Alberta Family Histories Society,

I'm interested in any help you could give me on my Family. Taylors especially Thirza Plum Taylor,  Pamela Ann Taylor Stephens, Wards, and any connection to Cargills.

Israel Taylor married Thirza/Thirsa Plum/Plumb (born Jan. 18, 1793 New Baltimore (town) Albany co. (now Green co.) N.Y.)  She died October 16, 1879 in Erindale, Peel Co. Ontario. She was buried in Saint Peter's English Church Cemetery, Erindale, Ontario.

Their daughter Pamela Ann Taylor was to have married Edmund Stephens and lived in Streetsville, Ontario, Canada.

Their son, Sidney Taylor married Nancy Ward and had children Permelia born 1854 and Henry Taylor born about 1859.

Sidney Taylor, son of Israel and Thirza Plum Taylor:

On the July 16th, 1860 Census for West Warren Post Office, Warren District, Bradford County, Pennsylvania was Sidney Taylor age 26, a Farm Hand, who was born in Pennsylvania, and his wife Nancy (Ward) Taylor, age 26 born in New York, and their 6 year old daughter, Permelia, who had been born in New York, and 1 year old Henry, who was born in Iowa. This leads me to this fact: they were in Iowa by 1859.

On the same Census, next door was A. Ward, age 61, born 1799, a farmer with a real estate value of $2000.00 and a personal estate value of $460.00. He was born in New York, and lived with his wife *Jane, age 62, also born in New York.

Living with A. Ward was Leroy Ward, age 28, a Farm Hand, and his wife, Frances Ward, age 26. Both had been born in Pennsylvania. There was a girl, Ida age 5 who had been born in Pennsylvania and Ada, age 1, an infant girl who was also born in Pennsylvania.

Sidney Taylor and Nancy Ward had these children: Millie Taylor, Ada Taylor, Henry Adelmar Taylor and Bert Chase Taylor.

____________________________________

I suspect that Jane __? Ward born 1798 in New York was possibly a Cargill. Could you help in anyway with this question.

__________________________________________

I found this information leading from Ireland to New York to Ontario on these Cargills.

There were David Cargill born 1759 and James Cargill born 1762 who immigrated to New York about 1780.(Rootsweb Message Board Re:David & Bridget Cargill b1760 Antrim,Ir)

After being caught up in the Revolution, About 1790 David Cargill moved moved to the Niagara area of Ontario, Canada. His wife was Bridget. He had no children, but adopted Charles Anderson.

(Rootsweb Message Board Re:David & Bridget Cargill b1760 Antrim,Ir - the whole thread)

His probable brother:

James Cargill moved to Nassagaweya, Halton Co.,Ontario, Canada.

His olest son James Cargill born about 1801,had no know children.

His son David born 1803 had children William, James b. 1831, Henry b. 1838,Alexander b. 1840, Nancy and David.

Our Kirkpatrick reunions are always really big and it's hard to get to know
everyone (which is why we have one almost every year!). One "game" we
played recently at a Charlton reunion was really great in introducing people
to each other and I'm going to suggest it for one of the upcoming
Kirkpatrick ones. It's very simple, but it gets people talking.

Everyone gets a little card with twelve questions on them that they answer.
The cards we used had the following questions on them, but you could get
creative and write your own, I think:

Choose one word to describe yourself.
Which Disney character are you most like?
What colour are your mom's eyes?
What thought first crosses your mind when you hear "Once upon a time?"
When you were growing up, were you the calm cool-headed kid or the
prankster?
What is your favorite card game?
Do you hold a grudge?
If you were to choose a vegetable most resembling your personality, what
vegetable would you pick?
Can you roll your tongue?
If you had to choose between eternal youth, endless wealth or a year's
supply of dog food, which would it be?
What is your parents' wedding date?
Do you get along with all your siblings?

Each question has a signature line under it, which you leave BLANK.

After everyone has filled out their cards, they start moving about the room,
trying to find individuals who have put the same answers on their questions.
When you find someone who has answered a question the same as yours, you get
them to sign on the signature line beneath that question. First person to
get a signature for all their questions wins a prize.

The game takes some time to play. Allow for at least an hour. But it is a
lot of fun and a great tool for getting to know people. I was so impressed
I kept my little card for inspiration. I know one day it will be my turn to
organize the Kirkpatrick Family Reunion!

Hope this helps.

Subject: Family Reunion Ideas

Hi to all, we are having a family reunion. We have one every 5 years, and
I am looking for ideas. Previously we have done wall charts with the whole
360 people on them. We have also done books, last reunion and couple back
before that. I would like to do something different this time. Will
appreciate any ideas.

Is anyone else going to the National Genealogical Society conference in
Kansas City next month?

Fellow AFHS Members:

On March 17, 2008 the AFHS Board of Directors approved a number of
changes to the Society's Bylaws.

Members of the Society will be asked at the Annual General Meeting on
May 5 to approve these changes. So that you will know in advance
what you are being asked to approve, details of the changes have been
posted on the AFHS website at www.afhs.ab.ca. There is a pointer to
the changes on the front page. The current unchanged Bylaws are also
on the website under the Society button.

Hi Everyone,

The regular monthly meeting of the Ontario SIG is being held tomorrow April 28th at the AFHS Library at 712 – 16 Avenue NW at 7:00 pm.  We will be discussing “case studies” of searching for Ontario land records.  Anyone who has been successful in finding land records in Ontario, please come prepared to share with us.  Include how you found the land location, how you determined which film(s) to use, what you found, where you went from there, etc., etc.  Detail the whole process you went through to find the records.  Bring documents and pictures if you have them.  We will have access to the internet if you wish to use it for illustration.

Also, if you are having a problem trying to find some Ontario land records, come prepared with details and we will see if we can help you.

Everyone welcome!

Ronna Byam

Chair, Ontario SIG

In my previous email I indicated there would be limited seating available for people to eat bagged lunches. This has been changed. We have rented a room at the church for the lunch break, so there will be seating available to eat bagged lunches.

Sorry for the confusion.
