Hi Mary et al:
Sorry Legacy does not have a built in charting program until next month
when version 7.0 comes out, and then it is in the deluxe version and not
the freebee.

To whom it may concern:

At the Legacy Users Group Meeting on Wednesday we were unable to get the
the laptop to boot up or connect to the projector. One of our members
went home and brought his personal laptop back. It also would not work
with the projector. Judie Riddell stated that the English SIG also had
problems with the projector not working. I do not know why people seem
to change the settings on this equipment causing major problems for
others. Someone from facilities will have to have this equipment
checked out as we tried everything we could and were unsuccessful.

Hi Mary,

I've used a few different programs over the years and still tend to go back to Family Treemaker to produce quick, easy, and attractive charts (but I am using Version 11, so this aspect of the program may have changed substantially since then).  However, it has been my general impression that it has been a "leader" in the field of charting pretty much since it was first introduced.

I found that Generations (a program that I believe is no longer available) could do a credible job and was very flexible (that is, one could readily personalize the charting format), but it was much more "fiddly" to get an attractive result.

As an overall program, I predominantly use Legacy now.  As has been already posted, it does not currently have an imbedded charting program.  I can hardly wait until the next version (with a charting program on board) comes out.

All the best,
Joyce

Aloha!  Hi there to all from the middle of the Pacific Ocean.  Being on the Legacy Family Tree Cruise has been fantastic thus far.  AND . . . . . .our class yesterday was a Sneak Preview of Legacy 7.0  The new Charting Program that will be a part of Legacy 7.0 is fantastic.  Version 7.0 has added an integrated Charting Program and this new release should be available before Christmas.  We are looking at our email every few days so if anyone wants to get in touch with us we will be here until October 3rd.

Hi All:

I am finding this stream of messages very interesting.

As far as I can see no one yet has mentioned the wonderful resource that our AFHS website provides at
http://www.afhs.ab.ca/aids/software.html

Part of that page provides the best summary of all - Bill Mumford's
GENEALOGICAL SOFTWARE REPORT CARD

Sometimes it's hard to see the forest for the trees!!

Cheers

For your information

The International Archive CD Books Project -- 1 October 2007 --

Effective immediately, Rod Neep, the founder of the Archive CD Books project, is retiring and closing the doors of "Archive CD Books, Ltd.," the British partner company in the international digitization project.  The remaining partner companies in Australia, Canada, Ireland, and the United States carry on with the project, however, and will continue to add to the project's large inventory of digital reproductions of old and rare books that are of interest to family historians.

Mr. Neep started the Archive CD Books Project in 2000 to make certain old and rare documents more readily
available to genealogy researchers and family historians.  The growth of his business was explosive and within three years he had made more than 1,500 valuable titles available through his company web site.  At about the same time, he was instrumental in setting up two new independent partner companies in Australia and Canada.  Since then he has added two more companies in the USA and Ireland.  Thus the International Archive CD Books Project took shape and continues to develop its inventory of valuable reproductions.

As always, each of the partner companies will continue to provide access to the Archive CD Books international inventory through its own web site while focusing on the digitization of additional works that were originally published in the local country.

The principals in the remaining partner companies are Alan & Stephen Phillips (Australia), Chris and Malcolm Moody (Canada), Brian Donovan (Ireland), and Bob Velke (USA).

The Archive CD Books Project exists to make digital reproductions of old books and other materials available to the public, to donate original publications to libraries and other institutions, and to cooperate with these repositories to preserve
their existing collections for future generations.

Subject: Threshing crew (contributors) needed for the January 2008 issue Chinook!
president@...
Send Email Send Email

Hi all,

I hope you are enjoying your October issue of Chinook. If you read my column "Editor's Eye", you will realize that I need to start gathering input for January 2008's issue. The deadline for contributions for this issue is November 1. Although a steady stream of new main features comes in (which should not discourage you, if you have a good story about an ancestor or even a time period in Alberta or Canadian or even another country's history that may help us connect to the social history of our ancestors), it is our features that need more input.

1. Queries - if you have a mystery or roadblock in tracing your ancestors - two free for AFHS members per year (issue year so starts with this October (as you may have noted, it is Volume 28) - and $5.00 for over that limit and/or for non-members. Please note non-members do not receive the issue in which their query is included. There is an extra charge for that. Queries should be sent to queries-chinook@... and non-members or those who are including more than two queries since October 2007, should send payment to

ATTN:  Publications Committee – Queries

Alberta Family Histories Society

712-16 Ave. NW

Calgary, AB, Canada

T2M 0J8

Payment will need to reach us at least six weeks before the issue date (e.g. November 15, 2007 for January 2008's issue) to ensure the query will be included in the upcoming issue.

2. Serendipity - that ah-ha moment when you find another clue to your ancestry when or where you least expect it! Just read the last few issues and you will see some of the stories. Photos are also always welcome. Wasn't Rosemary Kry's ancestor (as shown in the October 2007's issue) beautiful? Or in today's terms a "hottie". Let us see your ancestors beautiful or plain or just plain interesting. No charge for Serendipity articles and, if yours is chosen, you will receive a complimentary copy in the issue it appears, even if you are not a member.

3. SIG columns - we want one report from each SIG per year. More are welcome. You may include the upcoming dates and topics of meetings (e.g. the Celtic SIG in October's issue); new resources (e.g. the review of the Metis National Council Historical Database by Jim Bowman and the Ontario SIG by Marion Peterson), stories from SIG members or a list of names and places of origin (e.g. the Ukrainian SIG). Your SIG not represented in October's issue? Send us your submission for the January or April or July issue. Your SIG represented in October's issue? No matter - send us another. There is no limit placed on entries per SIG per year.

4. Book reviews, interesting tidbits as potential fillers, events or anything else related to genealogy.

5. Columnists - get those virtual pens out and write your article. Isn't it interesting we call it write even if it is not written but typed? Never mind me - write right away. November 1st is looming near. Right after Halloween!

Hi gentle folks,

It just struck me that the January issue is right before Valentine's Day. So why not send us your ancestors' love story/stories?

e.g. My mother was a "mail order bride" so to speak. My father's friends said he was getting on and not getting a wife. So they took matters into their own hands. OK  - that is all I will tell at this time. Read the rest in January.

My grandparents on one side met at a dance while my grandmother's intended was serving his compulsory army duty. He never married. He told people she was the "love of his life". Did my grandmother make a mistake? Wait until January to find out.

On the other side my grandfather came to see Canada and to find out if the land was as rich and free as the stories he had heard. Despite many problems encountered by settlers he encountered, my grandfather went home to marry his childhood sweetheart. Her parents said "No" since he intended to take his intended to Canada after marriage. His love of the land must have been more powerful than his love of his sweetheart, as he married my grandmother instead. Was he right in choosing land over love? OK - you know the drill - wait until January to find out.

Whether it is the story of two strangers meeting and marrying or stories of love or heartbreak, tell us about how your ancestors met and thus produced you.

It doesn't have to be long or sad or happy. Just send us your Valentine tale of how you came to be - no matter how far back the story occurred.

Dear Colleagues,

Please be advised that the City of Vancouver Archives has now re-opened following settlement of a labour dispute between the City and CUPE Local 15, the City's inside workers. As I write this, settlements have yet to be reached with the locals representing the City's outside and library workers. Archives staff have been on strike since July 23rd, and it my very great pleasure to welcome them back to work.

Please feel free to circulate this information regarding our return to service to any of your colleagues or researchers who may be planning to visit us, either in person or virtually.

We also are delighted to report that Leslie Mobbs joined our team August 7th as our new City Archivist and Director of the Records and Archives Division. Les comes to us with experience from BC Archives, Library and Archives Canada and, most recently, Public Works Canada. Over the past couple of months, Les and I have been working together on a number of the division's strategic initiatives, and we both are looking forward to moving ahead with many of these now that staff have returned.

Best regards,

Heather

Not sure what they do with them - but presume they go back to HP for reuse.

line wrap, e-mail me a note and I will send an e-mail with an attachment in
Microsoft Word or .pdf format. Note that this e-mail is in rich text
format, contrary to my recommendations!

Have your ever wondered why you received an e-mail (spam) that does not have
your
address in either to TO or CC headers?

If you create a log of the message sent from your e-mail client to the SMTP
(Simple Mail
Transport Protocol) handler of your ISP, you will find that your TO, FROM or CC
entries are
not used in determining the addresses that will actually receive your message.
What
actually is used is the address that is contained in a
RCPT TO:<address@domain>\ (RCPT = Recipient) command to the SMTP
handler.

The SMTP protocol is so simple that, if you understand the format, you can
actually send an
e-mail message using a Telnet connection without using any e-mail client. A
simple script
could easily be written to send lots (hundreds?) of RCPT TO: commands in an
e-mail and
use fake TO, FROM and CC addresses. The RCPT TO: will not show up in the
headers of
your received e-mails as they are removed by the POP3 server before you get your
e-mail.

This is the method used by spammers to send you that e-mail that you wondered
why you
got it.

I hope this rather technical e-mail is of interest.

Charlie Hansen

=========================================

What follows is a log of an e-mail that I sent to various alias addresses that I
have which I
entered in the CC line of the message. [I have replaced the actual addresses
that I used
with"address#"}. The numerals at the start of each line indicate time to
thousands of a
second. The double carets indicate the direction of transmission. The next
4digit number
gives the number of hexadecimal characters in the line, followed by the command
or
acknowledgement code. In this case the RCPT TO: addresses match the CC
addresses
that I used.

Dear fellow researchers:

Of great concern is the possible closing of the United Church Archives at
the University of Toronto(Victoria University section).

Would you please pass this along to your genealogical contacts and please
consider signing the petition on the website.

These archives are invaluable in doing family research and for other
historical research.. Even though I am from Calgary, one of my places of
visitation in Toronto has after been these archives.

United Church Archives: http://www.savethearchives.ca/

The more people who participate, the better chance there is of getting them
to change their mind

Does anyone have information on who Barb Hausegger is? The gentleman
below is trying to contact her.

Hi!

I'm hoping you can help me find Barb Hausegger. I found Barb's name
associated with the AFHS by googling her.

She is a relative of mine (her father, Bert Lammond, was my
great-grandmother, Jemima Lamond's brother).

She was previously in contact with my uncle, Tony Park, but he has
since lost touch. Apparently she had given him some family history
information, and he wanted to touch base again. Also, I have recently
started looking into my family history, and would love to get in touch
with her.

Would it be possible to give her my e-mail address?
(allison_bill1@...) If she's wondering, my mother is Susan
Park, Charles Park and Moyra Leslie's daughter. I'm currently living
in South Korea (teaching English), so phone number or address would be
hard to use. Or, she could contact Tony Park. His e-mail is
tonypark47@....

Thanks so much for your help!!

Hi Tara!

I wondered whether there was any response about Barb Hausegger? She
is mentioned in the 2005 AGM report, on page 17
(http://www.afhs.ab.ca/society/board/agm_report_2005.pdf). It seems
that she helped transcribe the markers in Queen's Park Cemetery. She
is also mentioned on page 15 of the 2001 Annual Report, for the same
project (http://www.afhs.ab.ca/society/board/annual_report_2001.pdf).

I do appreciate any help you can give me. I live in South Korea, and
am trying to help my uncle in Ottawa find my late grandmother's
cousin.

Thanks!

Allison Bill
