Good morning all,

**Reminder #1 to all Celtic SIG members**

July 21st @ 9:30 am is when the Celtic Sig members agreed to "do their duty" (clean the Library).

So... the more members who partake the greater the chance of getting the job done before the Library opens at 10am.

See you there
Donna Kirkwood
PS  I'll likely be there before 9:30 am.

Good morning to Celtic Sig members,

2ND REMINDER

This Saturday, July 21, 9:30 am. It is our turn to clean the Library!
The more people to "show up" the quicker we'll get the job done (before
the Library opens at 10:00am). I will likely be there before 9:30.

Thanks for your attention
Donna Kirkwood
PS I've only one member who will be out of town on a family matter that day :-)

Hi Folks:

Now that our Calgary Stampede is just a memory and your Stampede friends/relatives have all gone home I'm sure you are looking for something rewarding to do.  Right?

You guessed it.   Good old AFHS has been invited once more to show 'its colours' at Fort Calgary.

This time it's not for just one day but two. Two days to present our table top display and offer guests the opportunity to find their ancestors with the help of AFHS.

We will be part of the final day celebrations of Historic Calgary Week 2007 on
Sunday August 5th from 11am to 4pm
Then, on Heritage Day, Monday August 6th we will again have our display in place from 11 to 4.

We plan to have two persons per shift.
Shifts will run from 10:45am to 1:00pm and from 1:00 to 4pm (just three hours or less).

WHO WILL BE FIRST TO SAY "Yes"?

Please let me know as quickly as you can if you will help. Feel free to call me at 254-2293 if I can provide more information.

Cheers

BILL

Hi all,

I am busily putting together the October Chinook and I have space for one small query on the query page. I hate to leave wasted space so if you have a small query - of about 50 words - please send ASAP. If you have a longer query or if I receive more than one - no problem. If I can't use it this time, there is always the January issue.

Pssst! This is a secret but the last issue brought together someone who was looking for information on an ancestor and an archivist in the location she needed information from. I am hoping the person who had the query will write this up as a Serendipity article if the archivist is able to help her. Until then it is hush-hush!

See what a little query can do?

Please tell everyone who has not climbed the genealogy tree all the way to the top to use the Query space in the Chinook!

Shhh! Don't tell those who have climbed the tree as far as possible. If they find anymore they just might need the fire department to rescue them.

Remember non-members or members who have had more than 2 queries in the last 4 issues pay $5.00 per query and worth every penny of it. This does not include receiving a copy of the Chinook for non-members. One issue is $8.50 counting shipping & handing. This would be in addition to the $5.00. If you wish to pay more as a donation, please let us know this is what the extra funds are for.

Hi once more, folks:

We are still committed to provide our display at Fort Calgary for the Heritage Day weekend.
We have still two staffing vacancies to fill.
I hope I don't have to cancel our opportunity to display because
we are unable to fill these two shifts.

We need someone to staff our display from 1 to 4pm on SUNDAY AUGUST  5th and on
MONDAY AUGUST 6th from 10:45 to 1pm.

Can you help me?

Call me at 254-2293 or email your willingness to support 'old AFHS'

Hi Carole
Based on our member's (Gord Hulbert) very favourable experience I installed a Canon CanoScan LiDE 25
(from Staples at about $80) a couple of months ago and I'm very pleased with it. It ties into my laserjet printer and so I use it as a photocopier.

I have an HP 4890.
I chose it because I have older negatives that do not fit in the 35m slots that many scanners have. It's whole bed can be used for negatives and slides, not just one row (like most scanners).
The only problem is that I had to buy it in the US as it's apparantly not available in Canada.

Consumer Reports and PC World are both good resources for reading about scanners and their good/bad points.

Hi,

I think two big questions you have to answer first is what do you want to do with your scanner (photos, 35 mm negatives, odd size negatives, pdfs and/or OCR docs, email, etc.

I have two Canons and like them both for different reasons - The FB630U is older but it is very small and compact and propelled completely from the power of my laptop (i.e. I don't need to plug it in to us it, although it doesn't shorten the length of time my laptop will run of the battery by a bit).  It's great to use while travelling and still produces a great digital image from a photo after all these years.  It does not do negatives.

More recently, I bought a Canon 9950F, it's fast and does a wide variety of negative sizes.  It also does great PDFs and OCR (Word) docs.  It will also attach to my printer to do photocopies and it does scans to email (although I haven't used these features yet).  It cost a pretty penny more than the FB630U, but it probably has come down some in the seven months since I bought it.  I was able to buy it here in Calgary.

Another note, technology is changing at such a pace that this email will probably be obsolete before I can hit the send button.

Hope this helps,
Joyce

the other name on the monument. I can forward a .jpg showing the names.

	 Hi Carol:

The names look Hungarian to me. Send me the pictures and I'll have a look
at them.
Hungarians being mostly Catholic, most of them were buried in St. Mary's. I
have may friends buried there.

Greetings:

I plucked the announcement of this scholarship off a bulletin board in the
Fredericton public library (yes, I put it back!)....mostly because of my father,
Stuart Church. He and my mother still live in the small Alberta town in which I
grew up (brothers and their families too). In his eighties, with some typing and
editing assistance from me, he has written, over four years, a family history
working from old postcards and letters, with some interviewing of family
members. He has traced things back five generations in Canada. I think that we
have reached the final rough draft of his creation, and I am scanning in photos
that he has selected from across the years. We are working towards some kind of
document that can be circulated to family.

I see that your scholarship is for formal study. I do not believe that my father
would undertake that.... and is perhaps past the point where it would have
helped. But we could use assistance with production. And I suspect that I will
"roll" his work here into a larger book project of my own. It will connect it
with some work I did with my mother, Lorraine, regarding her work as a small
town dressmaker (featured as a museum exhibit called "Fabrications: Stitching
Ourselves Together" a few years back.)

Can you suggest places where I could apply for assistance in the completion of
this labour of love? It has been a private effort so far.

Thank you for your advice.

This is a book that many genealogists will relate to. It is not merely the
story of a family; it is the story also of the world they lived in and the
experiences they encountered. Many chapters in the book take place in
Central Alberta. The book was reviewed by Angus A. Glass in the March 2007
edition of the British Columbia Genealogist.

"This was a great book to read: it had all the elements of a novel..

The family story is set against the backdrop of world, United States and
Canadian affairs.

.With some luck and great research she has produced a book that reads well
and does not get bogged down in the minutiae of genealogy. Her story will
probably strike a chord with many who are interested in genealogy.
Enjoy!!!"

Available at public libraries, and

In Alberta the book is available at:

Hi All:
Oops, guess my directions to Burnsland were somewhat lacking. If
one is going North on Spiller Road, Turn East or Right onto Cemetery
Rd and Section B of Burnsland Cem will be on your right side. Go to
first corner, turn the corner and we will meet in that general area.

Thus if one is travelling Southward on Spiller Road, Turn East or
Left onto Cemetery Road, turn the first corner and we shall meet in
that general area.

Hope the Sun continues to shine most of tomorrow

Heather
