Hello everyone

Thank you for the kind comments from those who enjoyed my presentation last evening.

Charlie Hansen brought to my attention an excellent website about this topic: http://www.trentu.ca/admin/library/archives/historyofphotography.htm

I had requests for the poem I used for my beginning. I do not know its source. If anyone is aware of who wrote it, let me know, and I’ll send out another email to give credit.

Strangers In the Box

Come, look with me inside this drawer,

In this box I’ve often seen,

At the pictures, black and white,

Faces proud, still, and serene.

I wish I knew the people,

These strangers in the box,

Their names and all their memories,

Are lost among my socks.

I wonder what their lives were like,

How did they spend their days?

What about their special times?

I’ll never know their ways.

If only someone had taken time,

To tell who, what, where and when

These faces of my heritage

Would come to life again.

Could this become the fate

Of the pictures we take today?

The faces and the memories,

Someday to be passed away?

Take time to save your stories

Seize the opportunity when it knocks

Or someday you and yours

Could be the strangers in the box.

I also apologize for not having enough copies of my handout. Here are my hints and suggested resources:

  1. Protect the original
  2. Use a worksheet
  3. Ask other relatives
  4. Identify the type of photograph
  5. Identify the photographer
  6. Check the scene / background
  7. Look for clothing and hairstyle clues
  8. Look for distinctive features
  9. Compare with family information

Emigration is the topic for the next English/Welsh SIG meeting (Tue, May 15th @ 7 p.m. at the AFHS library).  British emigration records are becoming available on the internet and we will talk about these records and ways to follow immigrants after their arrival in Australia, New Zealand, the U.S. and Canada.  We will also talk about British emigration assistance schemes, letters written back home and, of course, we’ll tell emigration stories, our own or ancestors’.  Everyone – and every question – welcome (on topic or not).  Ann Williams (SIG Co-ordinator)

Hi All:
Further to this morning's discussion about what goes on inside
Windows XP, if you like to tinker (and I do), here are some websites
you might find interesting. If you're not interested in the insides
of Windows, read no further.

Make sure you have everything thoroughly BACKED UP, including the
ability to re-install Windows itself, if necessary. Some of these
programs allow you to screw up your system to the point where Windows
will not start at all, so beware.

In Windows XP (Home or Pro) go to Control Panel, Administrative
Tools, Services.
You will see there a long list of Windows "Services", some of which
start automatically, some manually, some of which have been started,
some of which are disabled, etc, etc. Getting this far is perfectly
safe. If you are nervous, just close the window and nothing bad will
happen. :-)

What you can do in this screen is change the status of most of these
services, possibly to make your system perform more effectively -
ONLY DO THIS WITH GREAT CARE. You can totally destroy your system here.

The descriptions in this window of many of the services are not very
helpful - eg "Provides launch functionality for DCOM services". I
find that 'Googling' the service name often produces multiple,
sometimes conflicting descriptions of what they are and do, but may
nevertheless be helpful.

However, I have found the following sites seem to have a fairly
complete picture of all the services and what they do, with
recommendations about whether or not they can be disabled, or at
least enough information that you can make your own decision. The
third one suggest tinkering is a waste of time, but has a lot of
helpful information anyway. :-) You will likely find services
running in your machine that are on none of these lists - HP put some
on their machines, Dell puts others on theirs and so on, but the
majority are either put there by Microsoft or by one of the user
programs that you have installed.

http://www.overclockersclub.com/guides/windows_xp_services_2.php
http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/Services/SSDP_Discovery_Service.htm
http://www.theeldergeek.com/services_guide.htm

For those interested in exploring Windows internals further, the
following site has a list of free tools you might find useful:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/Processesandthreadsutilities.mspx

I have downloaded a couple of them
- One explores all the programs Windows runs automatically, whenever
it starts up - this program "shows you what programs are configured
to run during system bootup or login, and shows you the entries in
the order Windows processes them. These programs include ones in your
startup folder, Run, RunOnce, and other Registry keys. A "Hide Signed
Microsoft Entries" option helps you to zoom in on third-party
auto-starting images that have been added to your system." It can be found at:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/ProcessesAndThreads/Autoruns.mspx

- The other looks at processes running under Windows and "will show
you detailed information about a process including its icon,
command-line, full image path, memory statistics, user account,
security attributes, and more. When you zoom in on a particular
process you can list the DLLs it has loaded or the operating system
resource handles it has open. A search capability enables you to
track down a process that has a resource opened, such as a file,
directory or Registry key, or to view the list of processes that have
a DLL loaded." It can be found at:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/ProcessesAndThreads/ProcessExplore\
r.mspx

For those who like to tinker. :-)

Subject: Yoodle-Lady-Hoo I'm Back and I want your Family Reunion stories, tips and lessons learned!
president@...
Send Email Send Email

Hi all,

I ask you who have had family reunions to submit your stories, tips and lessons learned from your family gatherings. Photos are always nice as well. So please think about this and send me your stories before you go off on summer vacation, as the deadline for our October issue is August 15.

I am back from a family reunion myself. Over 150 members of the Niedermoser family gathered in Austria from Canada, Switzerland, Germany and Austria. The Niedermoser family has been traced to about 1700 to Valentin Niedermoser of Waidring, Tirol (Tyrol is the more common anglicization but Tirol is what they have on the maps over there!)

From Waidring the family spread to St. Jacob-in-Haus, Fieberbrunn, St. Johann-am-Pillersee and other areas nearby. Two Niedermoser family members immigrated to Canada in 1908. The descendants of those two women are now found in Alberta and British Columbia. One woman's children bear her married name, but the other had her children before she married. Thus there are some in Canada who still have this surname.

Eleven descendants of these two women made the trip. It was an amazing eyeopener and I am excited to tell you more in the October issue. I hope you will think back on a family reunion you attended or organized, whether this was in North America or abroad. Please tell us about it.

Who was the common ancestor of all?
When did he or she live and where?
How many attended the reunion and from where did they travel to attend?
What were the organized activities?
What would you keep the same? What would you change for next time?

Send photos of the ancestor and/or reunion attendees/events and/or maps of the ancestral area.

I want to devote the October issue to reunions. That does not mean no other articles will be accepted but the more reunion stories, tips and lessons, the better.

So start writing!

Hi all,

For years I have been trying to find photo paper for laser printers with no success. Today I went to Staples and there on the shelf was Staples brand colour laser photo paper, glossy finish. I did not look to see if they have matte.

Working with a client we printed her photos first on the HP Inkjet using a photograph cartridge and Inkjet Premium quality paper. The images were very sharp. A noticeable difference was seen using the special cartridge over the regular cartridge but after 3 full colour photos were printed, it displayed a cartridge problem. We printed the photos on regular paper on the laser printer just to take them for sizing of mats. The framing counter assistant thought they were printed on photo paper.

We bought the colour laser photo paper, glossy finish back with us and printed from the printer onto this photo paper. It was just as good or very close to the special cartridge on inkjet printer with photo paper. The cost, however, was less. Also the sound was lower and speed was slightly faster printing from the laser printer using laser photo paper.

So if you are printing photos and have a laser printer, you can now print photos onto photo paper.

Hi Heather,

The Central Branch of Calgary Public LIbrary has peerages (Burke's and DeBrett's) and armorials (Rietstap) as well as books on the clans of Scotland, which sometimes include crests.  She would be able to take photocopies.  It takes a little work to figure out if the crest does indeed belong to your particular family, but if she'd like to come see us, we could show her how to use some of these resources.

She might also want to contact the Royal Heraldry Society of Canada.  This particular section of their website includes links to outside resources  including a section on heraldic artists and links to the various Heraldic authorities.

Hope this helps.

The legitimate asking of family history information for genealogical purposes may cause “vulnerable” seniors to cease sharing personal data.  So much for the maxim that one should interview the oldest members of one’s family FIRST (well, second – after writing down everything that you know for sure).
