Just a reminder that the Family History Coaching session for March is on this Saturday, March 31,  between 10:00 and noon on the 4th Floor of the Central Library.  This program is staffed by volunteers from the Alberta Family Histories Society and offers one-on-one assistance with your family history questions.  So, bring your questions, bring your friends.  Coffee is provided and we're very friendly.

The next monthly meeting of AFHS will take place on Monday, April 2, 2007 at First Christian Reformed Church (3818 14A St SW).

For the Basics Session at 6:30 pm, Linda Holdaway will give hints and tips for finding cemetery records and obituaries.

The general meeting will be held at 7:00 pm.

For the Main Program at 8:00 pm, Jacqueline Alford will do a presentation about Funerary Art.

It has come to my attention that some advertising regarding our meetings had a mistake. The monthly meeting in May will be held as usual on the first Monday of the month, May 7 (not May 2).

The Annual General Meeting will take place at the May meeting.

Hi there, I've been looking around on the internet and i can't really find what i need. Hopefully you can help me out. I'm still new in calgary and i am looking to buy a fan chart for my family tree. I have all my information on pages and i would like to have a chart for easier reading.Could you tell me where i can buy one..or something like it. My ancestors are traced back to the 1500's so a big fan chart would do the trick. Also, i have some other written documents that i would like to put together. Any suggestions ?

Hi all,

Can you believe it! I have many of the slots for the July issue of Chinook filled. However, the Queries section is empty. It cannot be that we have had all the possible queries published even though last time the call for queries resulted in some very interesting ones. Soon I hope to hear from those who had a query last time that they now have a Serendipity article. You cannot pass up the opportunity that this may happen to you!

Remember you can have two free queries a year if you are a member of AFHS. It is only $5.00 per query if you have more than that or if you are a non-member.

So let's dust off those Bible entries, census records and other documents that show dead-ends. Then send the query along to me to be entered in the next Chinook and soon you may find more information than you had thought possible. At least that's what I hope for my missing little Victoria. She is not a direct ancestor of my children but a sibling to Joseph Stanford II, their great grandfather. She was on one census record and that is all I have of her. I am going to enter her as a query and see what pops up!

Surely you too have some mysterious person in your family history.  We even accept direct ancestor deadends. So unless you have your genealogy back to BC, you have at least one query.

So let's hear it!

Send it to me and your mystery will go to our many members and to places where we exchange journals: US, UK and Australia. Who knows who may have the answer. After all, the late Doug Stobbs had connections to my children and so does Irene Oikle. Mertie Beatty uncovered a mystery for a woman in BC. Not because she was related but because she had taken a photo of a tombstone that had the answers to this woman's mystery and even a step beyond.

I always say "Be nice to everyone. You may be related." So let's get going and see who might be related to the mysterious ancestors we seek.

Hi - is anyone else having a problem with the latest Zone Alarm update? It
has a window come up with a Junk Mail Filter and Anti Spam filter, and I
notice it's made folders for these. As soon as my e-mail starts to download
I get a message Outlook has encountered a problem and has to close. The
e-mail slowly get downloaded but I can't get to it to read it. I finally
uninstalled it and reloaded an earlier update and now don't get that
problem, but my firewall is outdated.

Donna,

I am not currently using Zone Alarm.

From the headers on your email, you are a Shaw customer. Any of the Shaw
internet products include a free subscription / key for "Shaw Secure". Shaw
Secure is a complete bundle of Internet protection products: Firewall,
Anti-virus, Spyware proection, Pop-up blocker, all with automatic updates.
The (also free) "extended" version includes parental controls and spam
protection.

To get it, go to the shaw home page at http://www.shaw.ca/ Click on
"Internet Support" under "Customer Care". On that page select "Shaw Secure"
from the Internet extras technical support list. That page should have
everything you need to get going.

The headers for your email do not show enough about your computer to tell if
it meets the minimum requires to run Shaw Secure, so make sure to check out
that information on the above page.

If you receive an e-mail offering a download of Internet Explorer 7
Beta 2, delete it. A new virus is making the rounds that comes
disguised as a test version of Microsoft Corp. current Web browser.

Security experts reported no widespread damage Friday morning, but
they said the virus is notable for a couple of reasons. The e-mail
includes a convincing graphic that looks like it could really be from
Microsoft, and the virus is delivered when recipients click on a link
rather than in an attachment, which makes it harder to stop it from
reaching in-boxes.

Hi all,

I guess you don't need AFHS because you have already completed all the genealogy you could ever possibly want to do. So it would seem, because it just came to my attention that we do not have volunteers for the three most key positions: Chair, Vice-Chair and Treasurer. No society can run without these so I gather you either did not know there are no contenders or else you don't care. I am assuming it is because you don't know, because I didn't know this until yesterday.

No one volunteering to serve means no more AFHS, no more Chinook, no more advice, encouragement and camaraderie from our fellow or like-minded members.

If you read my first editorial as Chinook editor, you would know how much I care about volunteering. I was brought up to believe that you reap what you sow, you must give before you can receive and societies you want to see exist or continue cannot do so without you. Members of my family actually won awards for their contributions but that is not why they did it. They did it because of their belief that it is their duty to contribute in ways to ensure their church, society and community would continue being strong. Further they believe making these entities strong is what makes our country strong. How can anyone believe otherwise?

I believe there are members willing and able (more than able) to fill these positions. They just don't know they can do it or how much mutual benefit can be derived from volunteering for these positions. I believe most people are humble. They think "I couldn't possibly be Chair. I don't have what it takes. The person in this position should be more visible or active than me or for longer than me." This is not true. Almost anyone can be Chair. If you don't know how to do it, volunteering will certainly teach you that and more. Besides there are many seasoned members who have done their duty in these positions and who can mentor you.

I used to say it looks good on your resume. Perhaps you are in the position where this is not an incentive. How about it will look good for your children, grandchildren and descendants to come because they will have the work you do in this community to understand their past and will be taught that volunteering is a good thing to do to ensure the future.

Perhaps you are waiting to be asked but we will not know until you come forward. So ask yourself "how can I help"? What do I need to learn? How will I benefit from learning this? How will this inspire others so our future generations can draw water from this well.

Then let George Lake know. If you do not know if you are suitable for a certain position but would like to help, I am sure he can help you figure out what position would be best for you. George can be reached at george@...

Hi all those involved with SIGs,

We would like to see an article in Chinook for every SIG once a publication year (Oct to July issues). So far the English/Welsh SIG has contributed twice. So if you are in one of the other SIGs, please send your contribution preferably by April 15. It does not have to be long. It does not have to be done by the coordinator of the SIG. It can be a story you shared, tips you learned, databases or sources you found useful or even hopes for the future.

Good afternoon everyone,

I just wanted to remind everyone that we are hoping that people will once again bring non-perishable food items to the May meeting for the food bank.  I will also be putting up a notice again just before the meeting as another reminder.

We have usually had this event at our February Saturday afternoon meeting but we did not have a Saturday meeting this year.  It was thought that it would be better in May as that is half way through the year.

A huge thank you to everyone for helping with this project.
